House Republicans proposing a spending bill today that would avert a partial government shutdown on Friday, keeping the government running until September if it's passed. Fox's Lucas Tomlinson reports from Washington. That bill has President Trump's support. The president posting earlier on Truth Social, quote,

course, with a slim GOP majority in the House, every vote counts. Democrats are criticizing the flexibility of the Trump administration will have on spending and have called for a bipartisan agreement. The House is expected to vote on the bill Tuesday. President Trump is sending a letter to the leader of Iran in an effort to negotiate a nuclear agreement. This is a pivot for President Trump, who in 2018 withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal. Now Trump is facing a critical point as Iran advances its nuclear program. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei says Tehran won't be accepting President Trump's demands. Khamenei rejected the prospect of holding talks with the Trump administration. His comment came days after President Trump restored its campaign of maximum pressure on Iran to stop it
from developing a nuclear weapon. Iran's foreign minister maintains they won't negotiate as long as those severe sanctions are in place. Fox's Madeline Rivera. There are new details in the case of actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, discovered dead in their Santa Fe home. Fox's Christina Coleman reports. New Mexico's chief medical examiner said 95-year-old Gene Hackman died of heart disease with Alzheimer's as a contributing factor. Authorities say his wife, 65-year-old Betsy Arakawa, likely died a week before.
For her husband, their bodies were found on February 26 in their rural New Mexico home. Authorities determined Arakawa died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare respiratory illness caused by viruses transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents. The illness begins with minor symptoms like muscle aches, but symptoms of this disease can get worse and become deadly for people. Officials confirm that no external trauma was discovered.
China said Wednesday it's increasing its defense budget by about 7% this year. Fox's Jennifer Griffin has more from the Pentagon. President Trump announced he was doubling the tariffs on Chinese goods to 20%, angering China's foreign ministry. Quote, if war is what the U.S. wants, be it a tariff war, a trade war, or any other type of war, we're ready to fight till the end.
President Trump's pick to lead Pentagon policy raised eyebrows at his confirmation hearing when asked about whether the U.S. would defend Taiwan against Chinese reunification. I've always said that Taiwan is very important to the United States, but as you said, it's not an existential interest. Adding Taiwan should increase its defense spending to 10% of its GDP. China's defense spending has slowed over the years alongside its economy, but the country continues to push back against Taiwan's independence.
The Vatican says Pope Francis is responding well to therapy for double pneumonia and has shown a gradual slight improvement in recent days.
