'Hi Nay' follows Mari, a Filipina immigrant in Toronto, who uses her upbringing as a babaylan (shaman) to assist detectives in dealing with supernatural threats. The show blends folk horror, mythology, and urban supernatural terrors, with Mari recounting her experiences to her mother over the phone.
Mari encounters a horrifying, rotting creature made of stretched human skin and animal remains that attacks her neighbor Laura. The creature melts and reforms, eventually flowing under Mari's door. Mari uses folk magic, prayers, and protective rituals to fend it off, saving Laura and herself.
Mari's upbringing as a babaylan equips her with knowledge of folk magic, protective rituals, and the ability to sense supernatural threats. She uses these skills to combat the rotting creature, employing prayers, anting-anting (charms), and cleansing rituals to protect herself and Laura.
Detectives Donner and Murphy are supernatural investigators who assist Mari in understanding and combating the rotting creature. They reveal that Laura is their first survivor in such cases and recruit Mari to help with their ongoing investigations into similar supernatural occurrences.
The buttons, which Laura was sewing onto a dress, are revealed to be cursed artifacts tied to the rotting creature. Destroying the buttons weakens and ultimately destroys the creature, as they are linked to its existence and power.
The rotting creature is tied to an unidentified human corpse buried beneath the apartment building. The creature's awakening is linked to the cursed buttons and the accumulation of animal remains in the building's unfinished basement.
Mari frequently calls her mother, Nanay, to recount her experiences and seek guidance. Her mother's teachings and cultural heritage as a babaylan deeply influence Mari's approach to handling supernatural threats, grounding her in traditional practices and beliefs.
Mari becomes an integral part of the detectives' team, using her unique abilities to sense and combat supernatural threats. Her involvement leads to the discovery of the cursed buttons and the eventual destruction of the rotting creature, but it also exposes her to ongoing dangers and mysteries.
