College basketball fans have been treated to the first major upset of the NCAA tournament. For the first time in program history, McNeese has won a game in March Madness, defeating Clemson 69-67 after the Tigers mounted a late rally. Clemson was held to just 13 points in the first half, with McNeese head coach Will Wade saying he had been saving a particular zone defense all year long. We hadn't played the 2-3 zone all year. We just kind of put it in. We put it in for some stuff in the conference tournament. We never used it.
We thought this would be a good time to pull it out. The Cowboys' victory comes one day after it was reported that Wade has reached an agreement to become the next head coach at NC State. That hiring is expected to be made official when McNeese's postseason run comes to an end, according to multiple reports. McNeese now moves on to face fourth-seeded Purdue in the second round. The Boilermakers defeated High Point today.
Staying in college basketball, the top player in the country will play. Duke star Cooper Flagg will be active against Mount St. Mary's on Friday after suffering a sprained ankle in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament. Blue Devils head coach John Shire said Flagg believed he was ready to play last weekend as Duke took home the conference tournament crown. In the NBA, the defending champions will have new ownership. A group led by William Chisholm, managing partner at Symphony Technology Group, has agreed to purchase the Boston Celtics for a reported valuation of $6.1 billion. Whit Grosbeck, whose family leads the current ownership group, today has been asked to stay on as CEO and governor of the team for the next three seasons.
