The baseball world is grieving today. Former Major League pitcher Octavio Dottel is among those who have died after a roof collapse at a nightclub in the Dominican Republic. Dottel recorded 109 saves during his 15 years in the big leagues, including a career-high 36 saves for the Astros and Athletics in 2004. Dottel won a World Series with the Cardinals in 2011, was the fifth of six Astros pitchers to combine for a no-hitter against the Yankees in 2003, and played for 13 teams during his career.
The accident also claimed the life of former Major League player Tony Blanco and Elsie Cruz, the sister of former player Nelson Cruz. In a statement, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in part, quote, "...the connection between baseball and the Dominican Republic runs deep, and we are thinking of all the Dominican players and fans across the game today."
In golf, Rory McIlroy heads to Augusta National needing a green jacket in order to complete the career Grand Slam. Look, I understand the narrative and the noise and you know, there's a lot of anticipation and build up coming into this tournament each and every year, but
I just have to keep my head down and focus on my job. McIlroy is looking for his first win at the Masters in 17 tries and his first victory at a major since the PGA Championship in 2014. The first round of the Masters gets underway Thursday. Scotty Scheffler is the defending champion.
