In the NBA, one of the greatest coaches in league history is stepping away from the sideline. Greg Popovich will no longer serve as head coach of the Spurs and will transition into a role as the team's president of basketball operations. The five-time champion suffered a stroke in November and finishes his career as the NBA's all-time winningest coach.
In a statement, Popovich said in part, quote, While my love and passion for the game remain, I've decided it's time to step away as head coach. Steve Kerr, coach of the Golden State Warriors, played four and won two titles under Pop and expressed his appreciation for the man who means so much to him. The number of people Pop has influenced, the number of coaches in his coaching career, it's just incredible.
But Pop is one of the most important people in my life. That was courtesy of the NBA. On the diamond, Red Sox starting pitcher Walker Buehler was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday with inflammation in his pitching shoulder. Boston manager Alex Kora said the team does not believe the injury is serious. Buehler has had two Tommy John surgeries during his career, with the second one causing him to miss the entire 2023 season. And in Friday scores, Max Freed was brilliant for the Yankees.
