And welcome back to Sisters Who Kick You. Most people say that they love their parents, that they would do anything for their parents, that they would live and die for their parents. Our players this week are Joy Furman, Samaya's mom, and Adrian's fiancee, Adrian Reeves, our victim, and Samaya Williams,
our murderess. Samaya Williams was born on September 8th, 1997 to her mother, Joy Edwards, also known as Joy Furman. Her mom got married maybe more than once. Now, Samaya and her mom were extremely close. We don't know much about Samaya's background, but we do know that at the time of this story, Samaya was living with her grandmother, her mama's mama, Florence Furman.
If you asked anybody in the family about Samaya, they said that she was caring, kind, loyal, and a really beautiful soul. Now, Samaya is 24 years old. I'm not sure what she's doing for work, but I do know that she at least has to have a little money in her pocket. She also had a valid permit to carry a concealed weapon. Now, they were living in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, so for your state, check your local gun laws.
Things seemed to be okay. She was living with Grandma, and her mom was living in her apartment. And her mom had a man. And her mom's man's name was Adrian Reeves.
Adrian Reeves was born around like 1971 or something. He was born to a Miss Lynn Thompson. Don't know the daddy name. Don't know if the daddy was in his life. But I am curious as to who decided on the spelling of his name. Adrian is spelled A-D-R-I-O-N-N-E. For me personally, when I say Adrian with an E,
I feel like it becomes effeminate or so for your son. Like, it's usually like A-D-R-I-A-N. Or even if you want to do the A-D-R-I-O-N, just the E is throw me. I think that somebody was real country and was like, name that baby Adrienne. Adrienne.
That's how he say it. Adrian. His name is Adrian. Adrian. I'm trying to say, I'm trying to, I don't know the accents in Pennsylvania. He did go on to, you know, grow up, get a girl, had a baby by that girl. I believe that baby's name is Donye. But, you know, the baby grows up. Did not stay with the mom, but seemed to have stayed in his daughter's life. And we love when that happens.
Now, when we were looking through his memorial slideshow, it's possible, possible that he could have had a son, but there's nothing written or confirmed that this child in the picture was his son. So it's full-on speculation. Yeah, by us. But Adrian's family decided he was a lovely person, life of the party, aren't they all? He had a personality that would, say it with me, light up a room. Light up a room. I hate that. Do not...
ever. If I get murdered, it doesn't matter if I'm murdered. If I ever die, if I leave in the event of my demise, when my heart can beat no more, don't put in my obituary a room light up, therefore. So, you know, Adrian, one of these days he runs into Miss Joy Fireman. Joy's peeping him, he peeping her. They swap digits.
They start to text and text in terms of talking, talking turns to date. And all of a sudden, your man's got a fiance. You know, the couple, the couple was overall happy. You know, you do that. People love that when you see them. I mean, so the couple, they've been dating and things are going well for the most part. You know, they're engaged. They're having a good time. But, you know, every relationship got their problems.
So it's New Year's Eve 2021, headed into the 2022 new year. Joy and Adrian, they're arguing. They're having a spat in the parking lot. And they were really getting into an argument, going back and forth.
Joy says that Adrian hit her and then somebody passes by in the parking lot and they decide that they're not going to intervene. But they were like, this argument is getting really serious. So they end up calling 911. It's just like, hey, there's a domestic dispute that's happening in the parking lot. Everybody can see it. Can we get somebody to come down here? So the police pull up on Joy and Adrian in the parking lot.
And of course, when the police pull up on you, both of them, they try to like downplay what's going on. Oh, you know, we're just arguing. It's just it's New Year's Eve. Nothing's going on. Thank you for stopping by, officer. But we didn't call you. So please leave. It was just a verbal altercation. No need to be alarmed, officer. And the police are like, OK, I'm gonna need y'all to cool off somewhere else. Do y'all have somebody to call? Can y'all stay in separate places for the night? Yeah.
What can y'all do? Adrienne is like, you know what? I got a daughter. I'm gonna call her so she can come pick me up.
And the police officer is like, that sounds like a great idea, ma'am. Go ahead and go back into the apartment complex. Do you have somebody to call? She's like, yeah, I do have somebody to call. And she calls her mom. And, you know, her mom and her daughter, you call one. They live together, right? Adrian walks to like a gas station. And when the police officer sees Adrian walk off, he's like, all right, the guy is left leaving. I'm going to get in my car. I'm going to go. Adrian walks to the gas station and he waits on his daughter.
Now, remember, Joy called Florence and Samaya, her mama and her daughter. And it was probably like one phone call, but they lived together, you know? That's what I'm thinking. It was probably one phone call. But she was saying that Adrian laid hands on her. And so, of course, her mama's like, I'm coming over there right now, coming to get you. And Samaya's like, laid hands on my mama? What? I'm coming over there, too.
Okay, so Adrian, he walked over to the gas station, waiting on his daughter to come pick him up. And as she's pulling up, he's like, oh, shit, I don't know where the fuck my keys at. She's like, all right, I guess I got to help you look for them now. So they go back to the parking lot from where they was at, and they start searching for the keys. As he's looking across the parking lot and everywhere for his keys, now while he's over here, he runs into Joy.
who is now with her mom, Florence, and her daughter, Samaya, because, of course, after getting the call that you was arguing with your nigga and he laid hands on you, of course they coming to come scoop her up and see what's wrong. Joy is not happy about the news she received. You know, she over here, don't touch my mama and don't touch my Doritos. Like, she's not happy. Keep your hands off my mama.
Keep your hands on my daughter. She's sitting there, confronts him in front of his daughter. Like, I don't know how old his daughter is, probably somewhere between 16 and grown. But in front of his daughter, she's sitting here going off. Nigga, who the fuck is you to go put some hands on my mom? And he was like, yo, yo, yo, you need to calm down. You need to respect a man when a man is present. That's what they always say, right? That's not how a woman should be talking to a man. That's what you think he said? I'm a grown ass man. They don't like to be yelled at like that.
Well, I remember my mom was yelling at my cousin. It was her cousin. So, like, they was the same age. She was yelling at him. It was, you acting like a bitch. He was like, I don't call me no bitch. Bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch. And I feel like that's how the conversation went. And so he getting hot in the face. She getting madder, more enticed next thing you know. A gun goes off. Adrian collapse. And Samaya is fleeing the lobby.
This girl done pulled out a 9mm handgun and shot Adria square in the face. And it just took off running. Lobby surveillance shows all the women walking through the lobby of the apartment building when Adria collapses to the floor seconds later, thin person, with a dark hood pulled up, exits the lobby and leaves the area.
So the detectives arrive at the scene right before 10:00 p.m. They get there and they find Adrian dead in the lobby with a gunshot wound in his head. The gunshot wound is a nine millimeter shell casing and it's pretty close to his body. So he's automatically pronounced dead at the scene and the detectives, they start detectiving immediately. Detectives Gary Henry and Gregory Pitchford were assigned to the case. By the time they got there, I mean, everybody was still there.
Samaya's mama was still there. Samaya's grandma was still there. Adrienne's daughter was still there. Only person out there was Samaya. Everybody was ready to point the finger at her. They were able to look at the surveillance footage of the lobby. They can clearly see Samaya walking with them. I mean, she was wearing all black. She had her hood up, but she was walking with them. And then she fled the scene right after this man collapsed. They asked everybody, who was that woman? And everybody said, well, her name is Samaya Williams.
Samaya's mama's talking to the police and Joy is like, "Oh my God, my child, she has such a bad temper. Like, I'm gonna lose two people."
Girl, if that tracks with your daughter, if that tracks with your daughter and all you got to say is, oh man, she got such a bad temper. Girl, you should have never had her on scene. You should have never told her this man laying hands on you. But you called your mom and they live together. I would have been like, are you near? She doesn't, it's not giving shopped.
It should have been like, what are you doing? Why would you do that? Oh, she just got such a bad temper. I knew her temper was going to get her in trouble someday. Like what? If she know her daughter temper like that, then she should have never let her hear that shit. I mean, the scene was there. The witnesses were there. The body was there. Life doesn't happen biweekly. The person that called 911, there was proof that they had at least that they had an argument ahead of time. The surveillance video shows that, you know, yeah, he came back for his keys, but he was pretty calm. Like at that point, the police talked to us. I just need my keys so I can go. My daughter's here to pick me up. They weren't even him and Joy weren't even into it like that. Samaya, she wanted to be into it like that. She needed to have the last word.
And so with all of the information that they had, police were like, great, let's put a warrant out for Samaya's arrest. So an arrest warrant was sent out for Samaya and in that was cited first degree murder, third degree murder and possessing an instrument of crime. In her wanted poster, they described her as having brown hair, brown eyes, five feet tall, weighing 127 pounds and considered armed and dangerous.
The police gave out clear instructions to the public. If they see her, call 911. Do not approach her. Because at this point, you want to run, and you're just killing people. Armed and dangerous. Shots have been fired. Samaya, she does some hard thinking about how she wants to move forward with the rest of her life. And
Um, she decides running and hiding is not the way. So on Monday, January 3rd, she turns herself in to police. She did immediately get a lawyer, and they advised her, "Do not run from this. We know you did it. At this point, we're just going for mitigation. Do not run from this." Upon turning herself in, she's charged with first-degree murder, third-degree murder, and possessing an instrument of the crime. She gets locked up. They do not give her bail.
They said, do not pass, girl. Straight to jail. Right on up to Montgomery County Correctional Facility.
She has her preliminary hearing on January 21st of 2022. Now, at the preliminary hearing, it's really just for the judge to hear the state's evidence and decide if there is sufficient evidence to have the defendant sent to trial. Now, the defense is not required to present any evidence, but they can choose to do so or they can choose to rebut any allegations against the defendant. But again, they was like, let's not run from this. They was like, let's just...
take a plea deal again you did it this man never hurt you we got video footage saying there was no imminent danger they was like do the right thing girl do the right thing so she was like all right let me take a plea deal she takes a plea deal for third degree murder now of course she did this plea this third degree murder plea because she wanted to avoid a first degree murder charge that she would have gotten if she was found guilty which didn't we just talk about that
In our TED Talk that everybody wants to call it. It's her crime con talk, but. That's because that's what I called it. Oh. I went, when you had me do the intro, I put my favorite part was our little TED Talk and we get to share it with y'all. And so not everybody has been calling it a TED Talk. You know, TED Talk is branded and we didn't do a TED Talk. Yeah, I didn't. Okay. Okay. Cool, cool, cool. But what are you going to say when we actually do a TED Talk?
in Jesus name. And then they're gonna be like, you called it. Now y'all on the big stage. It's gonna be even bigger for them. From our TED talk to the TED talk. It's a journey. Damn. Okay. Thank you for, thank you CrimeCon for having us. Anyways, back to Samaya. Her lawyer, Robert Craig Keller was like, listen, you're gonna accept the plea. Let's go ahead and just argue for the lowest sentence that we could possibly get.
So he was trying to say, listen, she has no prior convictions. She had a license to carry. She is extremely remorseful. In this case, you have to look at it. There are a lot of extenuating circumstances. In her mind, she felt like she had to protect her mom. On that night, as wrong as it may be, she felt in her heart of heart that she needs to protect her mom. Your Honor, she is very, very sorry. And for that reason,
Judge, I feel that Samaya should be sentenced less than the recommended 12 and a half years. She did it, but she came in and she said she's sorry. She turned herself in. She ain't never done nothing like this before. And her mom was getting her hands laid on her, and she didn't want to do that. This girl's not a monster. She's a loving child. And the prosecutors were like, no, no.
The prosecution team was headed up by Megan Bernadette Carney and William Harry Hyland III. Sound like two people that said that. If it is one thing that I really love, it is shopping for jewelry. rocketmoney.com slash sisters and they argued to the judge that she needed at least a 25 year sentence they said listen your honor one thing's for certain and two things for sure she shot him point blank close range in the head this was an execution this wasn't self-defense as you can see
In the surveillance video, no one was actively being hurt at the time of this shooting. This was murder with malice. She made a decision. She chose violence. Just because you want to be a protector, a protector does not mean take the law into your own hands. The defense keeps saying that she was a protector, but let me tell you something. The law don't say that she was a protector. The facts.
The hard, cold evidence don't say that she was a protector. That wasn't the case here. She tried to take the law into her own hands and no one, no one is above the law. Now, remember, this was just a hearing because she did plead guilty, so they're just arguing about sentencing.
Adrian's mom was able to testify and she said, Semiah then got a chance to speak and according to the
things that we could find, the articles. They said that she was really remorseful. She said, quote, this is an unfortunate situation for both families. I'm not the monster that they painted me to be. The situation weighs heavy on my heart every day. I bet it does. I really bet it does. Because you didn't have to do that. You got to face the music. And of course, Joy also talked to the judge and said, you know, I love my daughter. She's a loving child.
You know, at this point, they're trying to figure out what her range of sentencing is going to be. So Judge William R. Carpenter went back to his chambers and came out with his verdict.
Judge William R. Carpenter sentenced her to 12 and a half to 25 years. Set to serve at Munson State Correctional Institution. He said she acted without lawful justification, and even though she was remorseful, a lesser sentence would depreciate the seriousness of a crime. And I think that's the hardest part, like, in giving these sentences. It's like, you can want to believe somebody is as sorry as they want to be, but...
It's no longer about you. Like, it's about you, but it's about making sure the families feel respected too and the families feel justified too. So it's like, I can't just say you learned your lesson. You're gonna have to-- You're gonna have to see it. Most of the time as a child, before I got my punishment, I knew what I did wrong and I learned that lesson. - Yeah. - But you still gotta take your punishment.
As soon as I got caught, I knew I was wrong, and I knew I was probably never going to do it again. I knew I was wrong when I was doing it. You know, hello, come on now, but you got to take your punishment because feeling bad, feelings fade. But you remember being in that corner, and you bet you don't want to go back. Yeah, you got to lose something too. Really, consequences stop me from doing a lot of things. They're necessary.
The things I would do without consequence. I ain't saying I was trying to hurt somebody, but I'd be living a different life, I tell you that much. A lot of people on Facebook, they were not happy about this case. They thought that Joy was wrong for calling her mom and her daughter over. They felt like she was having her daughter fight her battles for her. A lot of people felt that she should have at least been charged as an accessory to the crime.
I think she could do maybe a preliminary hearing at least and, you know, see if there's a case there. But I could see how somebody would get there. Because, as I said earlier, if you know her temper, you knew that she was dangerous to have there. If that was within her character, at no point did she say, this is nothing like my daughter, I can't believe she do this, I'm so shocked. Like, I would have never in a million... I'm not hearing it. I'm hearing, ooh, her temper. So...
I feel like you knew what bringing her could lead to, in a sense. Even if it wasn't getting shot, you know she wasn't just going to walk away. Words were going to be exchanged. Hands was possibly going to be thrown. Something. But she was going to get her lit back, pretty much.
And were you there saying, stop, stop, just let it go, just let it go, let's just get back to the apartment? Or were you, you know, what were you doing? Just let your daughter go off. So yeah, I could absolutely see that. I see why they want it for sure. I think. I would want it. However, it seems that although they agree that charges should have been pressed against her, a lot of people said that it was not a hard-up for Adrian to be putting hands on Joy.
They said, quote, he abused Joy and he got what he deserved. This also may not have been Samaya's first time hearing about this going down. Like maybe this was her breaking point, like I'm sick and tired, I'm sick and tired. But you can't be fighting people's battles. That's why I be telling people, like, you got to realize what's your business and what ain't. A lot of people, they mama is they business. I get that, but it's like,
You got to look at your situation and weigh the consequences every single time. What you got to lose. Because if it's nothing, if you good with where you at, J, more power to you. If that was worth it to you, then okay. But me, I got shit to do. So the best I can do is stop talking to your partner. We just got to cut that off because I got shit to lose.
All right, and that was the story of Samaya Williams. All right, y'all. She looks like she could be a little stud. All right, y'all. It's time for... Well, I'm not black. I'm OG. I didn't do it, but if I did, this is how I would have got away with it. I don't really have one for this one. I don't think I've ever been stomped like this. I didn't do it, but if I did, I'm not bringing a gun. I would. I think I'd flash the gun, like...
I do a like. That's the problem. Next time some shit happen, motherfucker, you gonna see this steel or the steel gonna be the last thing you see. Now get your keys and leave. Now when that nigga wind up dead, not even in the hands of you, they got you in the lobby flashing that gun talking about next time niggas show ass. You gotta prove that the next time I did it, people have gotten convicted on less. You gotta prove it.
I know. But if I did, I would not have done it under surveillance cameras in the lobby of the apartment complex. Right. Super not secure. At least the hallway. And if you know, you know that the police were called to the scene. So when you think that the police were around, you at least know a nosy neighbor called the police. Why are you still outside handling y'all's business? But you have to see a picture of the prosecutor. She looks like she did not come to fucking play.
Or, you know, I would have called a cousin, a male cousin, to go whoop his ass or something. Yeah, bring a man into it. Some hand-on-hand combat. Put your dukes up. Right. Parole or no parole? She got, what, 12 to 25? I guess that's fair. I'm in a different headspace this week than usual because of some personal things.
So I say keep her in there for fucking ever. But I think a lot of people don't, when their child has anger issues, they don't know what to do with it. And they don't know how, they don't know what the underlying issue could possibly be. And then you don't get them help and they end up hurting somebody. I think it is the question of who to blame. But also like knowing that she probably needed help.
I'm no medical professional, but looking at this case, like she probably needed some professional help at a younger age that her mama probably didn't know about. Her grandma probably didn't know about. So they was just trying to all go back and forth and help raise this angry and potentially violent child. But like I said, maybe I'm not as lenient because I'm in a rough place personally, but anger management for sure. Don't just lock her up with a whole bunch of other angry people.
Right. It's going to have to be required for everybody in prison, whether you were there on a violent offense or not. I don't think there's anybody in prison that's not angry. OK, this one says this one is from Pitbull Lover 1. I listened to this with my mom. Love the show. Got us laughing. Great work. I'm glad you're listening to this with your mom.
