Hello, hello. Malcolm Gladwell here. I want to tell you about a new series we're launching at Pushkin Industries on the 1936 Olympic Games. Adolf Hitler's Games. Fascism, anti-Semitism, racism, high Olympic ideals, craven self-interest, naked ambition, illusion, delusion, all collide in the long, contentious lead-up to the most controversial Olympics in history. The Germans put on a propaganda show, and America went along with all of it. Why?
This season on Revisionist History, the story of the games behind the games. Listen to this season of Revisionist History wherever you get your podcasts. I'm here to tell you about a very special episode of Smart Talks with IBM coming soon to your podcast feeds on February 14th.
This season we've been talking with new creators, people who are creatively applying technology in business to drive change. On our season finale, I speak with NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei, a man who spent 355 days in orbit on the International Space Station. Mark broke the record for the single longest spaceflight undertaken by an American.
In our conversation, we talked about the thrill of reentering the atmosphere. You're in a ball of flame and the heat shield's melting away. You can see things that are melting away going past the window. But then when there's nothing to pay attention to, I didn't realize how afraid I was that it wasn't going to work until the parachute actually opened and how giddily overjoyed I felt when it actually opened because I was just like, we're going to live. So...
We also discussed the science and spiciness of chili peppers grown in space. We grew hatch chili peppers. They warned us that the stress response to the space environment that these peppers have, they're more potent. And I think they were more potent. They were shockingly spicy. NASA could sell those chili peppers to some fancy restaurant and it could be, you know, celestial pepper soup or something, you know. What a great name for a dish.
