This Chalks94.5 podcast is brought to you by Millennium Satellite and Video. Log on to MSPNOW.com. TV excellence everywhere. That's Millennium. McElroy and Kubelik in the morning starts now. Welcome back. McElroy and Kubelik in the morning at 8 a.m. here from Dallas, Texas. It's July 15th. We are live at SEC Media Day's Radio Row, the Omni.

As I look just out to my left, looking at the usual SEC kickoff signage, it's always has the, it just means more signage underneath it. It now reads, quote, now 16 strong. As a reminder that Texas and Oklahoma have officially joined the SEC as of about 15 days ago. Well, today it becomes officially official.

at SEC Media Days. Texas will not take to the podium until Wednesday, but Oklahoma will kick things off tomorrow alongside Georgia, Tennessee, and Missouri. Today should be a fun one. You have LSU starting things off, followed by Ole Miss and Lane Kiffin, with Clark Lee out there as well from Vanderbilt and

Who is the other team today? I can never keep up with these things. Shane Beamer in the South Carolina Gamecocks. Oh, yeah, South Carolina. He might be second. I don't know. I can't keep track of it. Good work, Damian. Glad you're Johnny on the spot, my friend. Hey, when you stay ready, you never have to get ready, brother. I've heard that. And to be honest with you, I do feel like South Carolina might be one of the least talked about teams in the SEC coming into this year. And it doesn't...

I'm not suggesting that we need to be talking about them more. I just feel like last year, or two years ago, frankly, Shane Beamer kind of had South Carolina front and center. I mean, he kind of had South Carolina in the news. I remember two years ago, Mark Stoops and Shane Beamer kind of inadvertently got into it with each other.

Mark Stoops said, yeah, that's great. You can change the temperature of a program by putting on sunglasses and playing music and dancing around, but you can't change a culture. Well, Shane Beamer obviously took great exception to that.

And that was one of the most recent feuds we've had at Media Days in recent years. I'm not sure we're going to have anything quite like that this year, but it is Lane Kiffin Day after all. Yeah. And maybe, just maybe, we'll have something that we need to be paying attention to. One thing that you definitely need to be paying attention to, though, is the service that you're getting.

but they also have all the way up to industrial-sized units as well, delivering hundreds of pounds of ice per day. Call ABS Business Systems today at 205-588-5077 or start the conversation at absimage.com. Cole is back with us now. And, Cole, I feel like the team that we have talked least about this offseason are the South Carolina Gamecocks.

And it's kind of crazy. Okay, maybe Vanderbilt we've talked about less. Okay, just being honest. I don't know. You just had Clark Lee, so tied it up maybe. And I do think Vanderbilt comes up from time to time. Yeah. Granted, few and far between, but it does come up. I look at South Carolina, though, and considering where they were last year,

or even really two years ago. I mean, Shane Beamer's been there now for a handful of years. They were like kind of the darlings of media days for a little while. And like Shane Beamer was kind of, all right, he's got this. Hey, guess what? He's doing a heck of a job. He's kind of got this program on the upswing. And now it feels like it's kind of back to square one. Not to the point where he's like on the hot seat or anything.

But I don't feel like anyone's star has kind of diminished more in the last couple years than the South Carolina program. Tons of question marks about who has to be replaced. But if you think about where they were, this was a team last year that, what, week three? Was up 14-3. Yeah. Against Georgia. Mm-hmm. And now...

They hit into the 24th season having garnered probably less conversation about them than any other team in the league. I mean, how does that happen? They had scary guys on their football team then. We knew Juice Wells was going to be fantastic, arguably the best receiver going into the season last year. We knew what Rattler was capable of. We knew what he could be. You went and got this five-star, you know, freak show recruit, Nicholas Harbour, that you were going to be able to add and maybe help you some form or fashion some way.

multiple thousand year running back, granted at a lower level, that was going to come into Mario Anderson and possibly could help you out. You had a pretty good defensive linebacker. So I think you had players. You had guys.

And now who are those guys? Who is scary unless you're playing NCAAs? I saw all the Nicholas Harbor stuff yesterday. I don't know what the hands rating was, but it's probably a little bit higher than it needs to be. I don't know. I think they're going to have a solid defensive line. The offensive line might be a step better. Rocket Sanders has been great in this league before, but he's been in and out of the lineup.

There's not as many proven commodities. There's not as many scary players on their football team. And he's made multiple coordinator changes now. Now, some I would say that it was the right move. It was the right thing that he had to do. He's not the OC. He's a run game coordinator. O-line coaches.

Tight end coach, technically. But he's an O-line coach at his core. A former head coach, that's always good. He's been there before, so that helps out. I don't care about his other bona fides. His DNA is O-line coach, I'll give you that. But we have had aspects of this team that we looked at and thought, man, that could be really good. And I just don't know if they have that right now. I don't know if they have...

Those top-end guys that just scare you. And so I do think their recruiting is still really good for South Carolina standards. Now, Georgia's taken a couple of their commitments the last month or so. But I just don't know who are the guys that are going to keep you competitive in SEC football week in, week out. And it's going to have to be some development. It's going to be some guys in the portal that we don't know a ton about. But...

I just think that you've had high-level players. Some had done it at other places. Some had been developed through that program. And now you don't really have that right now. So I like what Shane's doing. I like the energy. Obviously, I think he's exceeded my expectations as a South Carolina head coach because I didn't really know what to expect. I hadn't even talked to him as a coordinator. And he was going to go be the head coach at South Carolina. I think he's managing and handling things extremely well where we are in today's college football. Yeah.

But I just, so much is going to be on Lenore Sellers this year. And he's got a ton of talent, a ton of ability, but is he ready to be in? Robbie Ashford is going to help him out some. I'm sure in the red zone, there could be a time that he comes in as the other quarterback, and maybe, yeah, but as an every down quarterback, no, he's not going to, no. Sorry. God, such a hater. I just feel like I'm fairly confident that he's not going to be a guy that consistently moves the chains for you, but he can run fast, and I'm sure they'll use him that way.

He can't run fast. Maybe that's part of the problem right now is they don't have enough football players. They got a lot of guys on the measurable category that are really good, but you need guys that can play football. Well, the one thing I do think they're going to be pretty good on defense. And I'm not saying they're going to necessarily be a top 10 defense in the country. I don't think they're going to have enough offense to be a top 10 defense in the country. But...

If they can play keep away, let's just play devil's advocate for a moment. All right. And like I said, I'm not anticipating them just coming in and, you know, being the Air Force version of SEC football where they just play good complimentary style. But with Lenora Sellers, you know he can run. And with Robbie Asher, you know he can run. It's fine. So like you use those two guys. You can run Lenora Sellers in the ground if you want because you got a backup that can do the same thing. They got adequate depth at that position.

I think Rocket Sanders is a guy that is very capable. You've got to stay healthy. You've got to stay available. Offensive line is an issue. I can't believe how much offensive line is an issue. But for ten years, I feel like South Carolina started five guards. I mean, I don't feel like they ever...

It's just, I don't know why that is. It's just they never seem to have a traditional tackle body out there, but that's beside the point. But defensively, okay, yes, Jordan Strawn's out. The transfer from Georgia Tech, Kennard, is a solid piece. He's fine. I wouldn't say he's great. He's fine. Tonka Hemingway's played literally a million snaps. You have the five-star freshman that might be able to give you something off the edge. What's his name? Dylan Stewart.

And then Gilbert Edmond has transferred back now from Florida State, who's played a lot of football as well. They have guys that have played a lot of football. Boogie Huntley inside has played a ton. TJ Sanders played good ball. Ryan Thomas has played a lot. TJ Sanders has played a lot. Devo Williams is a rock-solid piece. Linebacker. They have guys on the front seven that can go. Now, secondary, yeah, maybe a tiny bit of concern there. But you have experience. You have some guys that have played. Yeah, you've got lots of guys that have played. So I think defensively, if they can play some complimentary football, shrink the game offensively,

and create a bit of an identity where, hey, you're only going to get eight or nine possessions against us a game, and you've got to do what you can with them, that would maybe put some pressure on opposing teams. It's kind of wild because I feel like we're heading down the path of multiple teams trying to be that this year. We just heard Clark Lee almost kind of tell us that

Ball control is going to be a big part for them. That's the only shot they have, though. It's fair. But they have to do some of it with tempo. So how's that going to work? Don't really know. I'm convinced now that Arkansas is going to be sort of a ground-and-pound football team. You just now got there? Well, I think people think Bobby Petrino, and they think throw the ball around. Yeah, but Talon's not that guy. I mean, Talon Green's not a guy that's going to be close to that guy. There you go.

He can go, but he's not... The inconsistencies through the air are... He makes Robbie Ashford look like Robbie Ashford. I'm catching bullets over here. I think Kentucky can maybe turn into that team if quarterback doesn't go a certain direction for them.

I think Florida could be a team that sort of leans on the ground game a little bit more. If this Trevin Ball kid that's 232, 235 pounds looks like he looked in the spring game and is what some of those coaches think, they could be a team that sort of turns into a little bit more ground and pound. Like you just said, South Carolina. I don't think A&M really turns into that, but I think if the offensive line comes around, they have the backs to be able to do it. So,

Auburn is going to be more of a run first team than people think. That could be a real key portion of this upcoming season is that the teams that want to be able to go out and run the football and are able to, how does that change the dynamic against some of the teams that have these high-flying offenses that want to try to throw the ball around the entire game? Yeah, I think that's the way it always kind of goes. I mean, defensives now have gotten real specialized, and I think guys want to rush the passer. I mean, let's be real. You get paid for sacks.

you don't get paid for run stuffs. The guys want to shoot the gaps. You guys want to make plays behind the line of scrimmage. Uh, so I, I think reverting back to a group, ground and pound, and you've got to make people stop the run. I can live with that. I think it makes some sense. That's what I thought BAM was going to be last year. Uh, now they struggled mightily with athleticism in the first five or six games of the year, uh, at least along the offensive line. I think they just got too big. Um,

But I think there's a place for that in college football. Even in the SEC, as crazy as that might be. I look at Texas, for example. Texas was the number three rush defense in the country last year. I don't think they're going to be as good against the run. I think you can run it on them. Based on what I've heard coming out of spring and how their offensive line was creating seams in the run game, there's buzz that they won't be as good against the run. That was number three in the country last year. So I think there's ways to kind of pound it.

I'll be curious. I mean, how many teams right now do you feel real confident in being able to stop the run? Don't say Georgia because, I mean, we saw that last year. I mean, they got gassed by Mizzou, Bama, and Georgia Tech. Tennessee should. Tennessee should. A&M should. Should. Kentucky should. Kentucky should. Missouri, maybe. Maybe.

Ole Miss, I think, is a wild card. It's a coin flip. But have the bodies to be able to... You have to bet your life on this team being able to stop the run. There's not a lot of teams that I would be willing to roll the dice on. There's fewer this year than most years in the SEC. So, why not? Honestly, who's at the top of that list for you? Probably A&M. But it's not by...

Is it crazy that Tennessee might be in the discussion at the top of that list? If they're just talking front seven? I think they're definitely in the mix. I think A&M's in the mix. I think Tennessee's in the mix. I think Georgia's in the mix. I think Georgia's going to make an all-points bulletin. Hey, man, we're going to be sure on the edges this year. There's just no way. Kirby can watch his tape from last year and say, yep, we're just going to keep doing what we do. There's no way they can do that. So I think they're going to have a huge bounce back year in the front. But their D-tackle personnel is not...

It's not the 2021 version of the Georgia Bulldogs. Might be good, but it's not 2021. No, definitely not. I think running the football, I mean, I think Oklahoma in the front sevens can be good defensively.

I'm telling you, man, it's just not a lot. No, I mean, it's a great point, and you're right. And so it goes back to what we were saying about teams want to play ball control and try to play that style game. All right, if you need a new ride for summer road trips, Royal's got it. Sophie Hudson, Melanie Schenkel, the Big Boo cast, if you've never heard it, it's just fun. That's the only way I know how to describe it. Pop culture, some sports, a lot of college football, a lot of college sports, shopping, maybe some cooking, home renovations, a little bit of everything. Talk about trips, vacations. Melanie, I want to start with you. We're in Texas for SEC Media Days. You are a diehard Texas A&M fan, first and foremost.

Greg, do we have her microphone going? I hope. Make sure we get that. Now it is. Try that, Melanie. No, that's not going. No go? That's not it. Conrad, if you're nearby, we need you to come and help here. He's taking a nap probably. We'll figure it out. Sophie's just going to trade. That is strange. Is there like a – hang on.

Is there like a little clicker button? Oh, yeah. Well, this on button usually gets it. Yeah, there it is. It's right there. We got actual speed. Okay. There you go. I got it. Cole and Greg, not the strongest technique right now. We're going to do this. You didn't tell me to turn it on. That's what I'm going to say. In fairness, I would not have guessed if that had an on button.

The Rhodes Scholar finalist did figure it out. All right, so SEC media is in the state of Texas. Now, you live in my home away from home, San Antonio. That's right. Your favorite place. The Riverwalk is my favorite walk, by the way, of all walks. How does it feel just to have this in Texas?

I think it feels pretty good. You know, I came a couple of years ago when it was in Atlanta, but I drove up. Same thing? Dallas, Atlanta? Almost the same. Listen, drove up I-35, the construction that never ends, yesterday and made it here. And I'm excited to have SEC in Texas. I think it's fun. Yeah. I don't know if Greg would ever answer this honestly. Is there a little bit of A&M folks don't really like...

except Dallas. They kind of want Houston. I feel like Houston is yours and Dallas is kind of Texas's. Am I right there? Am I wrong there? That feels kind of accurate. It feels accurate. I kind of think Dallas, no offense. I'm a Houston girl at heart. I was raised in Houston. So when I come to Dallas, it's just a little...

It's okay. It's fine.

In Fort Worth, in Dallas, it's like, here's my Range Rover, and then I'm going to get out of that, and I'm going to get in my Maserati. And then I'm going to get out of that, and I'm going to get in my truck, and then I'm going to put my 10-gallon hat on and wear a buckle the size of Texas, frankly. It's just a little more...

It's flashy. It's very flashy. It's flashy. It's got some California vibes. I have noticed that a lot of the females that are working here today are in cowboy boots. Yes. Normally would not be in cowboy boots. Okay. There's a girl from...

an entity that covers another school across the way cowboy boots like laura rutledge came to dinner last night cowboy boots and she's like oh no i wear boots all the time i was like you live in connecticut yeah you don't wear boots every day now if they were easier to pack i would have brought cowboy boots they're just too difficult 100 and it's too hot like i don't feel like i can break out the cowboy boots for me until like september i will if i have to but it's not it's not i

I know it's still hot. September hurts also. I don't know how you even do that. But it's football season, so then you're going to wear your boots to football games. Sophie, how are you today? We want to welcome you into the conversation. Thank you, Carl. Listen, I'm just so happy to be here. I could walk around here for the rest of my life.

And be so content. Just people watch? Oh, 100%. Yeah, just people watch and school watch. And it's fantastic. All right, so Jeff Lebby coming in, Mississippi State. Are we excited? Are we starting to gain a little momentum? How are we feeling about the season? This is the official kickoff of the season for a lot of folks. No, I'm excited. I really am. And I think probably initially I wasn't as excited maybe. I didn't really know what to expect. I think he's done a good job in the portal the last little bit. You know, we've had some, I think,

They filled in some missing pieces. And I like that he's pretty. I think there are a lot of question marks across the board in terms of teens and not really knowing how it's going to play out. So I'm excited to see what he does. How's our hair clip situation for media days? Are we good? We're good. I did not go get a new one at the pants store. If people don't know, that's actually how we met you because I had a malfunction. It really wasn't a malfunctioning clip when we met. It was just user error. But...

Yeah, I made sure I had my A game. What is the pants store of Dallas? Like the clothing version of Bucky's. Neiman Marcus. There you go. It's fair. Good call. Melanie, let's get down to business here. The Jim Schlossnagel moved to Texas. I'm ready for this conversation. You wanted to make me mad. You wanted to make me mad. You're at your best when you're mad. Here's the thing.

It was a terrible mood. Did his dark agenda ruin my year? For a day, it did. It did. But what I'm going to say is that we have emerged from that better than we were before. And so I'm super excited. So I can no longer be mad. Listen, he's welcome. I wish him all the best wherever he goes. Thank you. I really don't. No, I don't. You're taking the Oklahoma approach to when Lincoln Riley left. Like, oh, we're better off without him.

No, but I think we 100% are. I'm excited about Michael Early. I think that he's the heart and soul. I think that the players love him. I think they respond to him. I think he's killing it in the portal. We got all of our major players back. So I'm excited. I feel good about it. Now, the Tuesday after the College World Series...

Did I feel good about it? No, I didn't. Did I have a lot of dark thoughts? I did. But I think it was when you see what everything happened in a week and where we've come out, I feel really good about it. And I feel excited about next season. And I may or may not have already reserved a room in Omaha for next year because I feel like it's the comeback tour. I feel like we're coming back.

Like, as in all the players in the portal and then back out of the portal, I guess. Yeah. Baseball players. So we got, I mean, everybody who went in the portal, which is, I understand when the coaches change, you've got to go in the portal to protect yourself. And, you know, you don't know what's going to happen and who we're going to hire and what that's going to look like. But I think once they saw who we came in and hired, they said, you know what, we're back. And so I think to get Jace LaViolette back and Hayden Schott back and Caden Sore back and Caden Kemp back, like, we've just got, just,

our team and then you look at some of the pitchers that we're getting and I just I feel really really good about the staff and about where we're going and we trust you none of our listeners know who those people are yeah that's okay listen it's going to be good here's what I'm going to tell you we'll put it on we just want to know the names I thought La Vie a Lette played hockey so it's good to know I thought that

Come on, Greg. Listen, I have a question for Greg, though, because when Melanie was in Birmingham the last time, we went to Tuscaloosa to watch the Aggies play. Now, I'm a Mississippi State person, but my algorithm on social media now thinks that I'm an Aggie because she pulled me in in the postseason. What's up with Alabama fans in baseball? Because y'all have a great program. You have a great coach. Stadium's awesome. You have a great stadium. For a long time, the stadium was terrible.

Sure, but it's not anymore. And we were like, where are the people? Where are the people? Why are they not supporting baseball? You know, I'll tell you what was tricky. When they were renovating the stadium and everybody had to play in Hoover, we had to play all of our games in Hoover for like an entire year. Right. And that was challenging. And I think what transpired with the coach last year was really troubling. Sure. So I think it's just going to take people like a year to just kind of,

All right, that was extremely traumatic. Oh, no doubt. And that team was amazing. I'm so mad about just how that went down. And, like, look, they're going to be fine. I'm not worried about them at all. But that was, I think, something that turned a lot of people off significantly. And they'll come back now. They needed the year to just kind of suppress, just kind of, I think, acknowledge and just kind of move through some of the feelings that

That I think we all had to process. When your coach gets fired for gambling, that is really disturbing. That's tough. That's a blood. It's super disturbing. Is it like when your coach leaves for your arch rival the day after you don't win the national championship? Is it like that, Greg? I've been recruiting for him for months. Yeah, exactly. Is it like that? According to all my Aggie friends, though, that's not even really a rivalry anymore. No.

No. We don't need them. Like, we don't, you know. I will never say that. It is a rivalry. Well, I'm glad you acknowledge it. 100% it is. I feel like on the Longhorn side, they like to say they don't care about us. But I see that they did need to follow us to the conference that we left them for. So, who's doing what is what I'm saying. Mission accomplished. I made it. I'm tired.

I even told her. I was like, Cole's going to try to make you mad. And listen, well done, Cole. Well done. Let's just keep going down that path. Okay. Let's revisit Jimbo Fisher's exit as a Texas State football coach. I saw, we were just talking about my friend Jimbo because I did see yesterday on a post that apparently he's spending some of our money because he's on an African safari right now. So, listen, I wish him well. I hope he enjoys that axis that he shot yesterday.

Listen, I'm not sad. I'm excited about the new season. There again, onwards and upwards. I'm just believing that we're in a better spot than we were last year. So we'll see. But I did listen to your preview yesterday, which I think the gist, if I can sum it up, is, huh, we'll see. We'll see. We were talking about that earlier in the show, though. There's...

this giant logjam of teams in the league that are that. Yeah. That we think, if this goes this way, they might be pretty good. They could win 10 games. But if that doesn't go that way, they might win six or seven. We just don't,

The tier sort of low tier two, high tier three feels like, what, Greg, seven, eight teams we said? Yeah, probably. The thing that I think is also strange, I don't know about y'all, well, Mississippi State can certainly relate to this. Oh. But, like, what is good? You know what I mean? I think that's challenging. Like, if you're an Alabama fan, good is 12-0.

Yes. You know what I mean? Eight and four. Or like 11-1. God forbid you lose one in the regular season. Eight and four. So I think we're having a tough time. And if you look at Vegas, like Vegas' win totals and how they assess what's good, there's not a single team in the country that's win total is above ten and a half. And there's also...

Most teams in the SEC are at like 7.5. And that's not normal. So I guess it's going to be hard for us as fans to kind of acknowledge, hey, that was a really good year. They went 7-5. But hear me out. That was a really good year. And I think it's going to take some time to kind of readjust and rewire our brains there.

I feel like as an A&M fan, if we can, number one, keep our quarterback healthy all year, because we haven't done that since Kellen Maughan, that would feel like a victory. I feel like already knowing that we're not going to have all 11 A&M games, that feels like a victory over last year. So, you know, if we could get to...

nine wins, I think would be amazing for Elko's first year. That would be a great season. Playoff season. Yeah. Notre Dame in a non-conference. You're in the playoff discussion, I think. The losses. Yeah. Yeah. And for Levy, if he gets to a bowl game, that's amazing. A hundred percent. Yeah. I mean, not to say, not to say Greg, that we have low standards. I'm not saying that. No. I am saying if Dan Mullen had ridden that sucker out, like there'd be a statue by now. You know, like if,

The thing also could have turned in a heartbeat, though. Like, he had it rolling a little bit, but at the same time, at some places, you're always an injury two or two away from a four and eight. Yeah. And I think Mississippi State is one of those places that is just not going to have collectively the depth of a Florida or a Georgia or a Texas or a Bama. So I just think it's...

I think A&M is going to be really good this year. I think they're a top 25 team. Mississippi State, I just don't know about. Okay. Not because I don't love Leb. I do. Well, there are a lot of question marks. They're so quarterback dependent. And I think their quarterback's good. But I think there's other positions that I just don't know. Like I said, they could win eight games.

Lord, would it be? Would it be eight games? I mean, I think that would be a huge win for us. Absolutely. All right, well, our listeners can get a big win, guys, by calling Wayne's.

If you need to keep roaches, ants, fleas, ticks away from your home, they provide a perimeter of protection around your home, secures a defense against roaches, ants, fleas, and ticks. Is that okay? Yeah. We'll come back and talk about how nervous you guys are to do Paul's show tomorrow. Oh, my gosh. Yep. Are you taking calls?

We don't know. I hope not. Surely not. Listen, nobody's going to call us. Nobody's going to call and have a question for us. You'd be surprised. You'd be amazed. You'd be surprised. Also, I want to know from each of you when we come back, one person affiliated with this whole ordeal that you're looking forward to seeing, that maybe you haven't met or that you would like to meet. We'll do that next on Macaroni and Kubrick in the morning. Okay.

The capital of the sports talk nation. This is Jocks 94.5 and jocksfm.com. Hurry and... Welcome back in. McElroy and Kublik in the morning, Monday, July 15th, 837. Right here on Jocks 94.5. Sophie Hudson, Melanie Schenkel of the Big Boo Cast joining us now live on Radio Row. How long has the Big Boo Cast been going?

Since 2007. We didn't know what a podcast really was in 2007. But Sophie's husband... You're doing AOL dial-up? Pretty much. We recorded on whatever the messenger was for Mac at the time. That's what we recorded on. Yeah, like instant message. We would record...

And I had some Internet issues, so we only recorded about two episodes a year from 2007 until about 2012. Right. And it was amazing that it's 2024 and she still has those Internet issues. She really does. She does. Listen, if it's windy, we're toast. That's right. The Internet's never really gotten better. Living in San Antonio, that's great. That's perfect. It's all fine. Yeah, so it's been a minute. I mean, but it's been fun. So I asked you before we went to break if there was one person you could meet that's sort of affiliated with this whole thing.

Who would that be? I mean, I obviously would not mind meeting Jeff Levy just because he's a – We could possibly facilitate that. Okay, thank you. But I will tell you, like, probably my biggest one, and I know he's not active in the coaching part of things anymore, but Nick Saban, listen –

I would love to meet Nick Saban just because I feel like he is a walk-in talk-in master class in leadership. He is. He is that. Yeah. So, anyway. I'm not sure if he would want to have anything to do with you. Sure. I don't know.

That feels fair to me, too. I love the guy. No one had a bigger impact on my life outside of my dad, Patrick Saban. I'm good. I don't stand with him all week. We're cool. We're fine. I'll be on the set with him in an hour and a half, and I'm dreading it. We'll be fine. Okay, so let's just cross that off my list, then. Y'all settle that for me. We'll move on to the next one. You're good. Exactly. Josh Maxson, who's formerly the Alabama SID, is now currently Saban's handler at Alabama.

shared a great story last night with us. We ran into him in the lobby and he said, I'll give you an idea of kind of where he is mentally. He said about, I think it was not last Monday, but like the Monday of 4th of July week. He called Josh and he said, okay, going to media day is going to work. Here's what I need from you. I need a few minutes with all 16 SEC head coaches. Okay, wow. And he said, and here are my times.

Tuesday, 7 to 10. Friday, 8 to 11. And next Monday, he gave them like three times in three hours. And Josh was like, okay. He said, and I made 14 happen. So I felt good about that. I'd love to know the two he didn't get. I would tell me too. I bet you could guess.

One may have been on the show already today. However, I don't think that was by their fault. I think it just kind of happened that way. Didn't work in their time slot. It is. Yeah. I do think the other was by choice, and I will not share that one. But it's just kind of where he is mentally. He is dialed in to coming to media days and being, I guess, similar to what he was as a head coach. Yeah. I like it. We learned a little bit about head coaches from you guys because you were at media days two years ago? Two years ago. Yeah.

And we had kind of a little bit, we didn't really have a responsibility. That would be a strong word. That's a strong word. We were allowed to sort of tag along in a certain area of media days. And so we got a lot of good first impressions, which was fantastic. I mean, it was, for us, it was really all we needed. So Brian Kelly was just walking by a few moments ago. What were your first impressions of him?

He smelled fantastic. I mean, like, really. Really nice cologne. Whatever. Aftershave, I don't know what it is. It was a good situation. It really was. And, you know, here's what we're not going to do. We're not going to say, hey, Coach Kelly. I've never worn cologne. Do we need to get on board? Are we missing the boat here? I think I had the curve cologne. Oh, well done. I think I had Abercrombie Fierce in high school. Oh, that's good. Greg, you were coming in hot.

With an abracrombie beard. Yeah, nice. Kind of set the tone as a 16-year-old redhead. Yeah, it really... I had to use whatever special powers I could use. High school was polo. Okay. If you didn't have polo cologne in high school, you were just poor. No, what were you doing? Yeah. Which we kind of were, but still, we found a way to have polo cologne.

That's right. Priorities. But not since college. I have not had cologne since college. Well, I'm just saying we noticed. Yeah, we did notice. That was the only one we noticed. I will say that that day, because we got to see up close with the coaches and a lot of the athletes, I'm going to say that it increased our respect for the shoe game. Like the different shoes were admirable. Like it really was something. Every time, it's funny you say that, because I've actually left, as a former shoe connoisseur myself,

I feel like taste in shoes has really gone down as a society. Okay. Interesting. I feel like now some of the shoes, and Conrad Van Order is a great example. He wears the ugliest shoes I've ever seen. He wears Yeezy slides most of the time. That's rough. It's like the uglier the shoes, the better now in some cases. Whatever happened to standard Jordan 1?

Jordan 3. It's a fair question. If you want to go 4, I can live with that. Okay. But when you start rocking some of these, like when you're on the Jordan 9s. Like the whole Balenciaga type thing. Oh, terrible. Like we're going to make the sole of this giant platform. Yeah. It looks like huge clogs. Yeah. I agree. You get more of like a modified ski situation with some of them. They're not fantastic. The other thing that blows my mind too, and I actually deal with this with golden gooses. So I'm not calling them out. Okay. This is not...

Everyone is fair here. Golden Goose is, to buy a shoe that looks worn for $700 to me is mind-blowing. Sure, I agree with that. Like, oh, this looks worn. I want that. I'll buy that. Yeah. It looks like someone scuffed it on the pavement. Yeah, drive over it with a car. Yeah, 100%. Yeah, tire tracks. But I look at some of these shoes that you could buy for $17, and instead you put a little Prada thing on there.

And we got action. So I want... This changes the game. We're really in our wheelhouse right now. If we're going to spend money, shouldn't you spend it on one of those ugly Balenciagas? Or should you buy a Ked that has a Prada logo on it? No, not even a Ked. I've shared this before. What?

When I do games on Sideline and it's going to rain, I will not wear my good shoes. Yeah. So I'll go to Walmart and I'll buy a brand new pair of like the Mall Walker Specials for literally $9.99. And it is amazing. The last time I did it was in Tuscaloosa. It was supposed to rain and it didn't. How many people are like, love the kicks, man? I'm like, what?

Listen, my daddy's 92 years old, right? A product of the silent generation, like old school. And he has contended for my whole life that everything is made in one factory, right? It's in Alexander City. It's Russell. That's right. It's on the way to Lake Martin. Yeah, exactly. And you can stop off at the store.

store, but he's always contended everything's in one factory and you just get a different label. He may not be wrong. Well, listen. So, listen, Cole, you have just given him a lot of validation. And they're comfortable, which is crazy. They feel good. They changed it. Freebies, just giving Walmart freebies out. Walt's family needed it. Whatever their new mall walker special is now, it's not as attractive. You're allowed to talk about that. You're allowed to talk about that for about two more weeks before Pant Store comes back on as a client. Right. And then you're not allowed to talk about it.

First impression, Kirby Smart.

Oh, he was fantastic. Oh, charming. So nice. Yes. That is not what a lot of people thought. Okay, no. Because here's the thing. He can flip the switch. Yeah. But when he walked into that room, because here's the thing. It was a lot of interns. It was a lot of young people. And I pay attention to who still says hi to everybody in the room when you don't know who they are or if they're important at all. And I felt like he made the effort to say hi to everybody in that room, which I thought was very nice. He shook everybody's hand. He thinks you might have a five-star middle linebacker. That's right. And I might. That's right. Maybe. Maybe.

He doesn't know. You can't just go say hey to mom and dad. It's got to be aunts, uncles, cousins, brothers, sisters. You've got to talk to everybody. Have you ever, and maybe there's someone that's no longer at their job, so I'd kind of prefer for you to lead in that direction here. Yes. Was there ever someone that you were like, I'm just not, I don't know about that person? Like, yeah.

Jimbo Fisher. Jim Slosnagle. We're sensing a trend here. The Jims. I'm going to say, dead to me. Goodbye. Enjoy Ohio State. Scott Woodward. Whatever.

Perfect. Train can keep on rolling. Well, you know who's dead to me? Dennis Franchoni. Oh, listen. Melanie and I have not known each other long, I don't think. No. And she told me when Coach Fran was coach at A&M that she and her best friend Gully would get so frustrated with his sideline demeanor that they used to scream at the television, look alive, Coach Fran. Look alive. Look alive.

Get excited. He just was like, he's looking at a Denny's menu. He's like, I need to see some sort of excitement.

I need to see that you're invested. I'll be honest with you, a Denny's menu would elicit a pretty excited reaction. All I have is a protein bar this morning. You have my attention. There we go. Pancakes with butter. I prefer Cracker Barrel, but we can make Denny's. You know who made the strongest impression on us, I think, that year at Media Days was Sam Pittman. He's the ultimate people person. Let me tell you why. So nice. He came in that room and you were just like...

I mean, you felt like you'd been reunited with an uncle. 100%. He's the most normal guy. Oh, my gosh. It's like, how are you a college football player? This job is way too ruthless for you. Yes. Like, why do you do this? Yeah. Every time I see him, and we have a really good relationship, but we don't talk a ton. Every time I see him, I feel like, like you just said, it's...

We've been best friends forever. Yeah, that's it. And we don't know him at all. But, like, he just was so warm when he came in that room. He was. It was really sweet to see. Like, in five seconds, I was like, well, I think I'm a fan of yours forever. Yeah. You know? He has that. He has that. SEC championship game, the last year he was at Georgia. Catherine and I went to the – we just went to the game as fans. And we were down on the field before the game, and she was pregnant with Locke.

And I saw Coach Pittman, and I was like, ah. And, you know, she's just kind of following me around, going all the different things. And we walk over, and he walked right past me. I, like, had my hand out. Literally, he walked right past me and puts his arm around Catherine and, like, puts his hand on her belly. He's like, how far along are we? Like, when's the due date? And I was just like, yeah, that's different. He's the best. What about Coach Stoops? Mark? Did we – I don't know that we –

Did we end up seeing him? I don't think they met Bob at Media Day two years ago. I don't know if you know, but he didn't end up at A&M. That was an unintended concept. You're going to like Elko. Have you met Elko yet? I haven't met Elko, but I've heard great things about him, and I really am excited about him. He's got some Sam Pittman vibes. I love that. He's just a very normal guy, very approachable. Wait until you meet Caelan DeVore. Okay. You know what? He is the best. Okay. Awesome. Awesome.

Well, just we have a family friend who plays, and he said similar. Oh, for sure. I don't know if you know, but we know somebody that plays. We know somebody who knows somebody. But he's on the team. And we ran into him recently, and he said similar. He's a really good guy. So that's awesome. It's insane how good he is. I love to see it. I love to see it. Shockingly, five years ago, I would say...

If you had to categorize the coaches with one word, I'd say psychotic. Seriously. Think about the coaches five years ago. I mean, it's like... That's true. That's true. Like, now, everyone's quite pleasant. Everyone... I'm not saying that they're not crazy behind the scenes. Maybe they are. But in a setting like this, everyone's pretty dang cool. Because even...

In the right moment, Sark and Venables are both very enjoyable to talk to. Brent's a really good dude. I just don't know Brent as well. Lebby, obviously, very approachable. Lebby's hardcore, though. Lebby's got that psycho in him. See, I don't mind a little bit of it. He's a killer. He's not a bad thing. But in this setting, he's approachable and fun to talk to. What about Eli Drinkwitz? Did you guys...

So I think we had gone... Was that maybe... Was he in there when we went to see Jimbo do his press conference? I think so. So I think we missed... But my overall impression of him is just he's so smart. Like, I just... I don't know. Hypo or Beamer? Did either of those come... I'm trying to think if this was... If you caught this before... I wish people could get to know Hypo like...

Hypo is always in presentation mode. If you could get to know him as a guy. He's a little bit guarded. He's very guarded in a setting. But when you get him like, hey, let's go get a bite to eat or go get a beer or something, he's awesome. He is. But you don't get to see that side of him as much.

Okay, so if y'all could, if you could go to dinner, like tonight, with anybody of the current roster of coaches, who are you going to dinner with? No ulterior motive. Just hang out. No, just a good time. Purely enjoyable conversation. Yeah. Probably Libby. Okay. Okay. Greg? I'd go Kaylin. Kaylin would be up there for me.

All right, we have to go to break. You guys have been awesome. Listen, thanks, guys. Thanks for having us. It's been great. We appreciate it. And good luck tomorrow on Paul's show. Thanks. It'll be easy. You'll do great. I hope so. Lord willing. Back with more media days next. Catch up with all things McElroy and Kubrick in the morning by subscribing to the podcast. Mythically, he's grown. He's almost like a little bit bigger than a player, right? Like the myth of Bo Jackson. Like, rate, and download the show from the Jock Tap or wherever you get your podcasts.

All right, welcome back in. Knuckle Roy and Kubelik in the morning. Appreciate Sophie Hudson, Melanie Shankle stopping by. Big bootcast Monday, July 15th right here on JOX 94.5. SEC Media Days Day 1, Radio Row continues to roll. Brian Kelly kind of making his way through. Greg Sankey's going to be at the podium in about five minutes. Once he begins, we'll start off, let you hear a little bit of that. Interested to see where he goes. Right out of the gate because there's a lot of big picture topics that he could go with. All right.

South Carolina's here today. LSU here today. Ole Miss here today. Vanderbilt here today. So we'll discuss all those teams throughout the rest of the show. And then obviously coming up tomorrow, Tennessee, Georgia, Missouri, Oklahoma, Greg and I are going to be live from Radio Row the entire week. Before we move on, G-Mac, tell our listeners about ABS Systems and how they can help them. I already got them. You were running around doing good work.

you know, good work for the show. I will tell you about... I'm always about doing good work for the show. I will tell you about our friends at B-Dry, though. 60 years they've been serving Alabama and customers across the great city of Birmingham. They have the largest waterproofing company in the country. It's the only company with a solution that stops all five ways that water can enter your foundation. They also offer the strongest warranty in the business. It's a life of the structure warranty and to make things even better for you, you get 12 months interest-free and no payments. That's right. No payments for 12 months.

So get the job finished, still have some cash on hand for the end of the summer fun. Get the job done right, strongest warranty and the best price called 942-1976 or visit BeDryAlabama.com. All right, Gary Stokin of the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, he'll be with us at the end of next hour. When we come back, though, we'll go to Greg Sankey at the podium, just kind of get a little bit of an idea what he has to say, what's on his mind, what are some of the big picture topics that he wants to hit right out of the gate.

A couple announcements we kind of alluded to a little bit earlier that I think you might hear some of from Greg Sankey as well. But with where college football is headed, always interested to see, because as Paul Feinbaum said earlier on the show, he's going to move the needle. He's going to move the market with some of his opinions and his thoughts on where he wants things to go, where he thinks things should go, and what he thinks things need to be moving forward. So we'll hear from the commissioner on the other side.

right here live from Radio Row, SEC Media Days, Day 1, McElroy and Kublik in the morning on JOX 94.5. This is McElroy and Kublik in the morning. At your job, do you ever have to deal with a nose roller? How about a snub pulley?
