All right, welcome back in. McElroy and Kubelik in the morning. First day of school for many of you. Hope you survived that. We always enjoy a visit from the coach, Wim Sanderson, and he joins us each and every Thursday thanks to our friends at Coke and Piggly Wiggly. Coach, how you doing today? Hey, I want to ask you all both of you a football term. I know you don't do it at quarterback, but there's a lot of talk about Alabama, maybe in defensively, cross-training.
And by that word, I have felt like that they meant that anybody on the defensive end, maybe the offensive side and the line, can play any position.
I may be crazy, and I want you to correct me if I am, that you're able to play more players by cross-training and teaching them. Am I way off base on that? I don't think it's to the exact extent that you described it, but I think you're heading down the right path. Greg and I have both had multiple coaches tell us that because of the potential of more games,
because of more guys that maybe you feel like you can rely on on your roster because of some of the turnover that they're trying to play different guys in different places.
So you get more safeties playing nickel, more corners playing nickel or safety, more safeties playing linebacker, defensive ends playing D-tackle, D-tackle playing D-end, guards playing tackle, guards playing center, different things like that. Receivers will line up at different spots on the field to do different things, maybe taking some snaps at running back like a Dylan Bell did for Georgia last year just because...
You might not have as many guys that you can lean on right now. Well, yeah. And I just felt like some of them defensively was going to be a visual defense. We'll jump into our sets defensively after we visualize your offense. Where in the past, defensively, you're pretty much sitting – when they line up in something, you're pretty much sitting there and leave it. And I agree.
The swarm defense and all is very interesting to me, and we don't talk about it much, and I don't know anything about it very much. But I think it's a little bit different. Maybe it's more visual as to what the offense is going to do. Maybe I'm wrong on that.
Greg, you've explained vision coverage a little bit before and some of the differences. Yeah, explain. Yeah. Basically, I mean, they will adjust. I mean, every single defense, man, zone, what have you, they all adjust. When you have a motion and you're building a formation, if you will, if you have a receiver that starts on the right and motions to the left, yeah,
And all of a sudden, there went from being two receivers on either side of the formations and now three on the left and one on the right. That forces the defense to adjust. That's why motion and unbalanced and shifting and changing the strength of the formation, all those things have become really, really good in so many different... I mean, I saw a stat last year in the NFL where...
23% of the offensive snaps involve some sort of shift or motion, which is a lot when you take into account the NFL and how many plays are run in two-minute situations. So it's pretty wild. But at the same time, I think that this vision defense is going to be a little simpler.
But it's also going to require great communication to account for adjustments like most defenses. Well, for a guy who knows nothing, you know, I know nothing about it. It's very interesting to me. To me, visual defense would be a booger bear to try to defend Tennessee.
what they do with their stuff offensively, the division stuff would be hard to do. So you can correct me on that, I guess. I don't really know. Maybe Tennessee doesn't do it more than anybody else.
They do some things differently. Some of the alignment's a little bit different. The formations are a little bit different. I think that they have ways to complicate it. To me, I don't really care what your defense is. When you're defending Tennessee, it comes down to can you win at the line of scrimmage with fewer numbers. If you can do that, then you're going to make your life a lot easier. And you can run. I honestly don't really care what coverage you run. If you can win with fewer in the box than most of the time what it usually takes, then you're going to be okay. If not...
then they're going to spread you thin in a lot of different places, and they're going to make your life hard. That's how they sort of manipulate the numbers and how they run their offense. Yeah, or when you get up to, you know, a third, fourth, fifth game of the year, you'll be a little bit better defensively, I guess. But to me, that's jumping in there too quickly. We're now sort of where it's not one voice with the coaches.
A good, bad, another above. Coach learned, not learned it, but the side that calls the Bill Belichick thing, he was with Bill, that one voice was the best way to go. I don't know the answer to that. The offensive and defensive coordinator, y'all may have already talked about it, so I may be wrong.
boring as crap to you, but the one voice versus everybody really expressing their thoughts and maybe sometimes counteracting each other as the season goes along. Any thoughts at all on that as a player or as a telecast guy like you two guys are about the one voice?
I'm going to let Greg spend more time on this because he's been in that facility and he's been around multiple sides of it. But just my opinion from an outsider looking in, I don't think there's a right or a wrong. I think it can be right both ways. I think it could be wrong both ways. I think it's just that that's the –
I mean, leadership starts at the top, and depending on how they want to run it and manage it, that's the way it's going to go. I've had people describe that facility to me as being a complete 180 and not that either one was more right than the other. We don't know how this one's going to be yet. It could be great again, and it would be managed in almost a totally different way. So, Greg, I don't know if that's something that you feel strongly about either way. I don't feel strongly about it necessarily. Personal opinion? No.
I think one voice is beneficial because you open up the possibility of one of your coaches saying something that can be misinterpreted or whatever the circumstances are. And if it's one voice, the buck stops with you. So if I were to run my program, one voice, one,
Then again, you still run the risk of players saying something dumb too. So it's not like you can totally eliminate. I mean, players can go on Twitter and say something dumb now. Like, it doesn't matter. I think one voice is beneficial, but I also think too you're allowing guys to go and speak a la Kane Womack, who has already been a head coach. Like, this guy's had to do press conferences for the last couple years at South.
So I don't know. I think it's circumstantial and it's probably beneficial to your coaching staff to allow them opportunities in front of the microphone to better refine their skills with communication. And and to I think it'll allow them maybe to get a little more face time. So maybe they can get a head job again someday. Like things like that, I think are beneficial as well.
Jumping a little bit to the recruiting part of it, I think certainly Auburn had certainly a big week in getting a lot of in-state football players.
Alabama, on the other hand, I'm not criticizing them, I'm bragging on them, went west and got more players in different places. I think that's good early since your coaches have been there with their previous jobs. I do think that as you go through the recruiting process, because of course Coach Bryant did, I would ask the football coaches to
be darn sure there wasn't a basketball player in it where they each one had we had a guy named clem griska who was our head of our recruiting and he had the coaches a certain five in mobile a certain five in florence a certain five in west alabama a certain five and he's each knowing uh who not only the players that year but the 10th graders and uh able to maybe
out-recruit people in-state because there's just a certain amount of pluses if you can get as many in-state kids as you can. So you've got to give Auburn a lot of credit at that time. Now, I think you also have to realize that Alabama got the people they wanted at a spot that they felt like was a good spot, and they knew the players because Auburn
because their coaches had worked there. But I do think as you go through the processes of year in and year out and go through the two and three and four and five years, that in-state recruiting is a little bit more beneficial to you maybe than people realize because when you line up to play Auburn, Alabama lines up to play Auburn, and Auburn lines up to play Alabama,
I have thought that maybe my guys played harder. That may not be right, but I think in-state recruiting is big, and I think Auburn's done a good job there this year.
I think it's massive. I think still it matters. And Coach Saban proved that you don't necessarily have to live in the state of Alabama to build a successful program here. But at the end of the day, I do still think that it's impactful when you can win your state and you can get big recruits in your state to be able to stay. But what a lot of people are going to counter that with, Coach, is are they going to stay two, three, four, five years? That's where it becomes really difficult these days because you don't know how long guys are going to be around.
Yeah, yeah. Well, I'll visit Auburn. I decide to go somewhere else. I get there and I don't play as much that first year. Boy, I tell you what, I like my visit to Auburn.
So I'll be darn sure they have a chance to go back on the like-by-visit. Same thing with Alabama. The deal there, the transfer rule, which is terrible, gives you an opportunity to be 88 and out the gate if you're not happy, provided that you, you know, if you can get guys to make enough non-official visits to your place, you can get a great feel for them, and they can get a great feel for you if they ever wanted to transfer or something.
Well, it's the one thing, Coach, that is... We mentioned a conversation that Greg and I were able to have with NCAA President Charlie Baker earlier at our seminar yesterday, whether it's Coach Adazio who was there, Coach Mullen who was there, talking to other coaches like Sam Pittman, Dave Doran, Joey McGuire that joined us via Zoom. The portal's the number one thing everybody keeps bringing up. And everybody thinks it's NIL and everybody thinks it's tampering. The portal is...
the key to a lot of these issues. And I don't know if and when it gets repaired, but that's one of the biggest problems. So...
If they can fix that, then I think it will help solve a lot of the problems. It's not going to make a lot of things go away, but it's going to make a lot of things a lot easier to manage. Everything that we do in college athletics, and we talk football because it's the bell cow, everything is lawyered up. The lawyers are there, and they're ready to – the money they say that they're going to give kids and they can't make over $600 or something doing certain things –
that'll end up being lawyered up. There'll be lawyers everywhere you turn. And when you do that, I think the NCAA has really worked hard to do what they feel like they can do through the courts and through the judges. But judges and lawyers are difficult to deal with because they're moneymakers too and the agents are moneymakers three. I think it's really hard to set a certain amount of money that people are going to get because I think you're going to cheat. I don't think you can ever set that. Whatever.
That's fair. We appreciate your time, Coach, as always. We know each and every week you're brought to us by our friends at Coke and Piggly Wiggly.
Well, Coke Cold and Pigley Wiggly bring me in. I appreciate Coke doing so. I've been with Coke for a long time, and Pigley Wiggly has great locations in Birmingham and throughout the state of Alabama, and Stanley and Andy do terrific jobs, and if you're from vegetables to meat to whatever you might want to get, when you walk into Pigley Wiggly, you'll walk out with a smile on your face because they do everything they possibly can to make that your homegrown grocery, and they do a terrific job. Thank you guys for having me on, and
Have a good week. Absolutely, Coach. Appreciate it. That's the coach, Wim Sanderson. Joins us each and every week. Thanks to Coke and Piggly Wiggly. I want to go back to the Miami Hurricanes. Are they going to be in this year's college football playoff? Bruce Feldman is going to be with us at 930. His freaks list out now. Comes out annually. We'll discuss that with him. But on the other side, we will discuss the Canes.
Are they in the postseason? And not just the ACC championship game. The college football playoff. That and more next on Jocks 94.5. All right, welcome back in. Michael Roy and Kubelik in the morning. Going to move on and talk Miami Hurricanes in just a moment. Quickly, since you wore the uniform, Greg, two uniform points that I want to try to make here quickly. The Bengals are going to wear their white uniforms against Philadelphia October 27th. Are we in or out on those? I don't like them, no. White is not a color. It's not the Bengals' color. Is it a color? No.
It's a color. Okay. Yeah, but it's not a Bengals color. Their colors are black and orange. It's like zero a number is white a color. White's all colors. Well, you're not. I like them. I think for a change up, they're clean. I like them. They're clean. Oh, yeah. Also, have you seen the Illinois throwbacks? No. They good? I don't think so. God, no. We hate them. Let me just say this. Texas A&M tried this a while back.
Stop trying to recreate the leather helmet with a real helmet. Thank you. That has not worked. Not a single time in the history of football. Not once. Has anybody tried to make a current day helmet painted as a leather helmet look good? That has never happened. Now, the rest of it, I think could have been fine, could have been good, but you can't do the leather helmet paint on a real helmet. No. Sorry. That is always going to be a terrible look. You're out. I am done with that. I don't need it. I don't want it.
It's atrocious. I can try to find it and send it to you in just a moment. I did want to get to a bit of news. The White Sox ended their losing streak two nights ago. They lose again last night, and they have fired manager Pedro Grifo. He has been dismissed.
Been a couple challenging seasons. He was hired November 3rd, 2022. Went 89-190 over about a year and a half. 28-89 this year. So that comes at about a 0.0 level of surprise that the White Sox are going to move on and try to find a different manager. Correct. Back to more important things for a second. Not being a contrarian here, I don't hate the throwback uniforms.
Now, and here's why. Hang on a second. Hang on a second. Oh, boy. This is like a significant game. It was 100th anniversary of Michigan and Illinois. Red Grange that day, by all accounts, hadn't seen the tape, had a legendary performance. This is the Galloping Ghost, right? Yes. Yeah. Correct.
So, paying tribute to him, these are by far the best leather helmet imitations that I've seen. The painted leather helmet. It actually does kind of look like a leather helmet. Now, the jerseys themselves, not a fan. Here's the problem. They're wearing a visor and a face mask with it, too. Correct. So it's not a leather helmet. But it does look like one. It looks like one.
Are we painting our shoes like the old kind of shoes they used to wear back in the day, too?
They have to wear like the... They didn't have cleats back then. They're actually going to have to play barefoot. Cool boy. But I think it's... It's not. I think it's okay. It's a bad look. The helmet's not a good look. The jersey and pants are fine. The helmet's bad. The jerseys can't do it. The jersey and the pants are fine. I like the helmet. No, you don't. Yeah, I do. It's not bad. Well, I just, based on your original, and you know I don't like alternative forms. It's not my thing. It never has been. I hate them. But if you're going to do one and...
you know, pay tribute for a good reason, I can live with it. And I think this is a good enough reason. And I don't hate the leather helmet. Put a patch on the jersey or something and keep it normal. Let's just wear leather helmets then. Might as well. That's what the head cranks are for. They look better than this. Oh, boy. Sorry. All right. You lost me there. It's not a good look. It isn't. I'm sorry. No one's saying it's like something that I want them to wear every day.
I don't want him to wear that every game. Same for the one game against Michigan that will be on whatever channel it's on. I can live with that. I can live with that. Okay. It's not the worst. All right. Let's quickly wrap up our discussion on Miami. When you take a look at this schedule, at Florida week one, Florida A&M, Ball State at South Florida, and then you get Virginia Tech. Going to be a pretty good football team. At Cal, week off at Louisville. Then you get Florida State at home.
Duke at Georgia Tech week off wake at Syracuse. Do you think they'll get Florida State? I think they could. Could, but you don't have a lean right now. I'm not going to say it's definitive. No. Let's just go through losable games. This is the game you usually like to play in these conversations. You like playing that game too. Don't put that all on me. Florida. Yes or no? Yes. Florida A&M, Ball State, South Florida. Any of those losable in your mind? No. God, I hope not for Marvin State. Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech.
Home? Is it home? Yeah, they got that one. It's still losable, though. Still losable. At Cal? Losable. At Louisville? Losable. Florida State? Not losable. I'm just kidding. Duke? Obviously, that's losable. Duke, they'll get that one. At Georgia Tech? Losable. You got that old Model T coming out with the cheerleaders hanging off of it? Rambling wreck of Georgia Tech, baby. Buckhead in the background? I'm telling you. It's definitely losable. Georgia Tech's good. Wake? No.
At Syracuse. No. Okay. So four losable games on the schedule? I think five. Five losable games? That's kind of iffy. Let's be real. Do I think they're going to lose at home to Virginia Tech? Probably not. Virginia Tech's going to run the ball. That's what they do. Miami's going to be good against Iran. They might not be much in other areas, perhaps, but I can promise you Mario and Lance Guidry, you ain't running the ball.
And they're going to be really good up front defensively, I think. Reuben Bain's a monster. I like the addition to Barrow. I also think that there is a chance, a chance, that they're going to be pretty stout from a depth standpoint, albeit with freshmen. They got like five-star guys all over the place along that defensive line. And Reuben Bain, as a true freshman last year, was arguably the best edge defender in the ACC at times. So I think they're going to be in good shape along the front, and that's going to lead to them winning a lot of games.
I don't think Florida State's going to be able to push them around. I don't think Virginia Tech's going to be able to push them around. I don't think Georgia Tech's going to be able to push them around. And those are three teams that are all going to lean heavily on running the football. I think Louisville is going to be a little bit more pass-happy this year, but they're still probably going to want to try to run the football, but I think they're going to look a little more like they did at Purdue with Jeff there, Brom there. So I think you're looking at a 10-2 for me.
Miami this year. I think they'll lose two because they're not quite to the point where they need to be just yet in the secondary. We've talked a lot about 10-2 with other teams. Is that enough for them? I think it is because I'm operating on the assumption that I think Florida's going to be alright. You get a win against Florida, probably a bull team out of the SEC. That's huge. They've got to beat Florida. That's a massive, massive game for them.
I don't think Louisville. I think Louisville comes back a little bit. Had the ball bounce their way a couple times. They almost had Florida State in Tallahassee last year. I think they give Florida State Miami this year. Okay, well, if that's the case and you drop two, then which two are you losing to? We're going to flip it around and not say what are your best wins, but how bad are your two losses if that's the case? I can see them losing to Georgia Tech, even though I think that game will be circled. What if they lose to Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech? Ten and two. That's in? I'm going to tell you. I think they're going to lose to Florida.
I'll just tell you right now. If they lose Florida week one, they could lose one that they probably shouldn't in late October, early November, and they'll run the table the rest of the way. I also would not be surprised at all, at all, if they lose to Florida week one, run the table, they're sitting there 10-1, lose at Syracuse week 12. What if they lose to Florida and Florida State, Greg? Is that in, 10-2? At that point, your best win... Virginia Tech or Louisville? Well, if you lose to Florida and Florida State...
Then you have one loss in the non-con. You have one loss in conference, meaning you're probably going to the conference title games. It's fair. So, you know, if they lose to Georgia Tech and Florida State, then maybe a problem. Then you have issues. You have big issues. But I'd be a little surprised if the ACC doesn't get at least two in. I think they're getting two in. I think the SEC is going to get four. I think the Big Ten is probably going to get three.
I think the ACC will get two at a bare minimum. So that's nine. Then you have one of the Big 12, one of the G5, and Notre Dame. That's how we roll. ACC's good at the top. I think so, too. I'm going to say no. I don't think Miami gets in. I just think there's too many new pieces, which leads to one or two things going wrong in a certain game or two. And then I'll go back to some of the coaching stuff that's happened in the past. It's like you said. I mean, you brought it up.
You go 10-1 and you lose Syracuse at the end of the season. I see some things like that taking place, some weird bounces with this team. I'm going to say no on Miami to the college football playoff. Damian? Yeah, I'm with you. I think they don't end up making it. I think they're going to have two losses that when you see the host of 10-2 teams that we're probably going to get in college football, I think the losses that they're going to have are just going to be the calling card. They're going to be the ones that's like, nope.
This ain't going to get it done. Not enough big wins. I don't think Miami gets in. I got a win in the ACC. With a loss to Florida. Yeah. I got a 10-2 win in the ACC. Good for the SEC right there, then. You better believe it. Florida's got to have that one, dude. Exactly. You just said Miami had to have it, too. I think Miami has to have it. I agree. I think it's massive for both teams. Massive. Huge.

All right, Bruce Feldman, Fox Sports, The Athletic, joining us now to discuss his freaks list that comes out annually. And just
Just give us an idea. I mean, it's got to be fun every year to put this together, Bruce, but anything stand out different a little bit this year, putting it together? Is it becoming, I imagine it's pretty difficult to actually come up with the guys that are going to make the list because everybody's probably submitting different players that they want to be on your list. Yeah, I mean, it's a fun process. Just it feels like it goes on for months and then as they get closer, it's hard to keep it now. It's grown to 101 and it's hard to keep it to that where you end up
feel like you're snubbing guys who are more than deserving. It's just, I think as I've expanded it, it used to be just like guys in major college football or just FBS. And now there's smaller school guys
And, yeah, you know, I talked to Jim Nagy from the Senior Bowl and a bunch of other NFL scouts just to get some good intel and their good leads. And it's just fascinating because I think it's grown into something way more than I ever thought it was going to be when I first started doing ESPN 20 years ago. Now, I know that it was kind of the genesis of...
talking to particular strength coaches and stuff like that, right? I mean, is that still kind of the process that you go about when you're putting this thing together? Yeah, great. I mean, the strength coaches have been really the backbone of this. And for doing it for so long, now that I feel like I have a pretty good rapport with some of them, these guys want to honor some of the guys that best represent what they do.
And so that's been a key. I mean, also the SIDs have been great in, in, uh, responding to a lot of detail questions, especially at this time, you know, in the middle of the summer and giving me updates on certain guys. And, and a lot of coaches are really, really been great about it too. I mean, I get submissions from, from everything from parents and players themselves, but a lot of times it's usually from coaches and scouts. And that's been, that's been awesome to have that kind of support on this. Bruce Feldman, uh,
Joining us to talk is Freaks List. This is out now at The Athletic. Nick Harbour, number one. And Bruce, there's a part of me that's beginning to feel sorry for this young man because we've seen all the NCAA stuff that's coming out too and all of his numbers in the video game. And the expectations are just going to be through the roof. But you're dealing with a guy that is a legitimate Olympic caliber sprinter.
And I've had a chance to meet him, talk to him. One of the nicest young men you'll ever have a chance to visit with and talk to. But as a receiver, I don't know exactly where he is. Take us through some of the numbers that got him to number one. And then what are you hearing about him as an actual position player in college football?
I think for context sake, we're talking about a guy who's as big as a lot of defensive ends. He's 6'5", 242. He ran 10-100 in a 20-20 200 meter for the Gatencox track team, which got him second team All-American track honors in that, got him to the NCAA Championships title.
in the spring. But I think for, you know, important details on this is he's not, you know, he's with the track team in, in the spring. He's not at spring ball and he doesn't end up with back with football really till June. So, you know, he did start five games last year, but he,
I think you're still talking about a remarkably gifted athlete who's still very raw when it comes to football. Now, when I talked to Shane Beamer the other day, he was like, oh, he works really hard and he's working to become a better receiver. And I think there's a lot of polish that needs to go into that and timing. And it's hard to when you are, as you said, I mean, this guy could make it to the Olympics as a sprinter. And again, he is running and competing against guys who are 70 pounds lighter than him.
I mean, we're all watching the Olympics now. You watch some of the sprinters and you're seeing them, and a lot of them are pretty muscle-duff guys, but I think you're seeing them all in the context of each other. If Nick Harbour was out there, they would look like... I think we lost Bruce there. ...a hundred...
We lost you for a second, Bruce, but we're good. Go ahead. Sorry. Yeah. Yeah, no, I think when you see it in the context of the Olympics, you're just seeing all these guys who are muscled up, sprinters who are, you know, really impressive looking. If Nick Harbour was next to them, these guys would be dwarfed by his, you know, 6'5", 240 plus.
And so to see a guy that fast, that big, is remarkable. And now to see what he can become, I think it's going to be fascinating to see if South Carolina can help him become a more polished receiver and become more productive because there's a lot to work with. It's just, again, he is spending a lot of time as a track athlete with legit Olympic hopes.
It's pretty wild to see South Carolina with two guys in the top 11. And yet most people have a tough time thinking they'll get...
To bowl eligibility, one name that did kind of jump out to me is J.J. Smith, Ohio State wide receiver. Look, he's a freshman. We've seen freshmen come in and play at a high level as a receiver in the past. He's 6'3.5", 218 pounds as a true freshman, but has already showcased some ridiculous numbers and athletic ability.
People are saying that he's going to be the number two receiver behind Igbuka and might very well be a reason why Ohio State wins the national championship. So what have you heard about him and his contributions to that wide receiver room? The guys in that staff, you know, who I trust and I've known, are very, you know, they're trying to be cautious, you know, about putting too much hype on a guy, but they are wowed by him on a daily basis, they're saying. I mean, he is...
He's about 10 pounds bigger than Marvin Harrison Jr. He's already much stronger. He's already hit top end, 23.39 miles per hour, which is insanely fast for a guy that big. He's a guy who bench presses 355 pounds already, squats 530, broad jumps almost 11 feet, and they're talking about...
the details and the polish, you know, we just met, you know, we're talking about before Nick Harbor, this guy in Jeremiah Smith is arguably the most touted receiver to come out of South Florida ever, you know, from people who've been covering recruiting down there on the high school scene for over 25 years, think he is the most complete, most gifted receiver that they've ever seen from there.
And to say he would be the most hyped receiver prospect that Ohio State has had, given the run they've had recently, not to mention all the guys who had been through there in the 90s who were elite athletes, that's a mouthful. But again...
The people inside the Ohio State program, they're not shying away from what they think this guy is going to become and what he will be right now in terms of like, I would not be surprised if he wins a Bolitnikov this year. Like he is that elite of a talent.
Bruce Feldman joining us to discuss his freaks list up now at The Athletic. Bruce with Fox Sports and The Athletic. All right, I want the one thing of any player that stood out to you the most, the one thing that one guy has done, can do. I mean, you see Jaden Roberts, 405 power clean in Alabama. Insane. We talk about Nick Harber, some of the speed times. I'm going to give you mine, Bruce. And it's pretty easy based on going through this list and what I saw.
Kenneth Grant at Michigan doing a Turkish getup with a 150-pound dumbbell is stupid. I don't know if people understand what a Turkish getup is, but you're basically laying on your back and you are holding a dumbbell over your head and you kind of roll to your side in different movements and then stand up with a 150-pound dumbbell is literally dumb. What's the thing that sticks out to you the most, the one thing of any of these guys on your list?
It's actually another Michigan guy and it's a video they sent me. Justin Truss is the strength coach there. And he was like...
sent me a bunch of stuff a week or so ago, and he goes, you've got to look at this. And when he described it, it didn't do it really justice. I mean, I'm watching this video. So Alex Orji is the frontrunner to be the quarterback, the starting quarterback there. He's 6'3", he's 238. His numbers are eye-popping for a quarterback or for anybody. He's a 41-inch vertical. He tests almost off the charts and everything. But he said, we do this. It's a...
They're on what's called slack blocks where these wobbly, it's almost like a little bigger than, than a shoe box. And what he has the players do, what they've been doing the last few years is he has them kind of bend over while on one, uh, one foot up on a slack block and bend over and pick up popcorn kernels off the floor. And it's all about like balance and stability.
Alex Orji took it upon himself. He's like, I'm going to do pistol squats, not touch the ground and keep picking them up. So I'm watching this video and this thing is wobbling. And he, you know, I think a lot of people know now what a pistol squat is. But I mean, his, his one leg that's not anchored to the ground where he's, you know, bending up and down is straight in front of him. And,
And he's doing reps with this. And so I said to Justin, after watching this video, and I'm just like blown away by it, I was like, who are the other quarterbacks with him? He goes, that's not another quarterback. That's Colston Loveland, who's a freaky tight end who's probably going to be a first-round pick. Everybody else is doing it the traditional way.
And Alex Orji is doing it while pistol squatting, again, on this slack block. Go to Freaks, the Freaks list. I tweeted out the video on my Twitter account. It just is an insane feat of stability and flexibility and strength that...
that I, you know, it blew my mind when I actually watched it a couple times just because it's so different than anything. And I imagine a lot of people, if they get flat blocks or something similar, will try to replicate it and probably break some ankles. It's ridiculous. The article up now at The Athletic, Bruce Feldman's Freaks List. Thanks so much for hopping on, talking about it, Bruce. We'll catch up with you again soon.
Always a pleasure. Thank you, guys. Yes, sir. Thank you. Bruce Feldman, Fox Sports and The Athletic, joining us to talk Freaks List. If you haven't seen this video, you should. We'll try to share it for Mac and Q, but Greg, it
To describe the box that he's standing on, it feels like somebody took an old school push broom and took the handle off and then you're standing on it. That's about the stability that it provides you. And the crazy part is the video that's on the article is pretty short. The video circulating on Twitter is longer. He just keeps going.
He's just repping these things out. Try to do one single leg pistol squat right now. You can't do it. It'd be so hard. And he has no issue doing them. You talk about core strength, body control, that is to the nth degree right there. That's easily one of the most impressive things on this list. I don't think there's any doubt. It's just...
It's just freaky. I don't really know how else to describe it. That's the best way to describe it. To have that type of ankle flexibility and balance and strength that just pop up that quickly off one foot with 248 pounds that you have to push up. Alex Orji, by the way, 41-inch vert, 10-7 broad jump.
The broad's crazy. 37-inch vert is not insane. 41-inch vert. I thought you said 37. 41-inch vert, 10-7 broad. Believe it or not. 37? Yeah. Yeah. 40-plus is cooking. 10.5 in broad is nuts. That's crazy. What's also nuts is just how amazing...
The inventory is at Bromberg's. They have two locations. You can also shop online. I'm a customer. My wife's a customer. My family has been going to Bromberg's for generations because they've been in business since 1836. What's the oldest? One of the oldest companies in the country.
And yet the standard is still the standard with the luxury shopping experience that you're going to have at Bromberg's. You walk in, you feel like you're shopping amongst family. Everybody knows your name. It's always nice to go and visit with some of their salespeople that already know what my wife might want before I even tell them.
It's really amazing. It's been great for me too around the holidays to be able to go and stock up. They have giftware as well. The best in customer service, the best in fine jewelry, watches. They're the best. No doubt about it. They also can do one-of-a-kind custom pieces for you as well. Go visit the oldest business in the state,
One of the nation's oldest family-owned and operated retailers, and they're right down the street from us. It's Bromberg's in Mountain Brook Village in the Summit, or you can always shop online at Bromberg's.com. One other one before we go to break, quickly. Don't know if you saw this. Kamari Copeland, defensive lineman at Virginia Tech. He set the school squat record with 605 pounds. For 10. 10 reps. How do you feel about it?
Oh, 10 reps. Yeah. 605 for 10. A 10-piece. Oh, he built different. The thing that's insane when I look at some of the stuff, that's crazy. Do 10 bodyweight squats right now. Right. I can do eight. Eight bodyweight squats. But in all seriousness, the amount of guys, if you go and look at this list, the amount of guys that are running 23 plus is crazy. I remember a couple years ago,
Like, you know, Henry Ruggs ran like 20 in game, ran like 23 to against Arkansas. And everyone was like, oh, my gosh, that is insane. I've never seen someone run in the 23s in a game. Like whatever. It might have been 23, six, whatever. Now there's like 30 guys running 23s.
Now, it is different, though, in workouts than in a game. It is. A lot of these guys are in workouts still. But, I mean, 23 period is ridiculous. But you get the guys that can do it in a game, that's whoa. Because I want to say Coach Ballou told us that Jamison Williams ran like 22-4 in a game or something like that. And he's like, that's the fastest we've ever clocked.
in a game. And there was a couple of the kids he had that were pretty fast. But yeah, it's there are a lot of guys in workouts in game that are over 23, which is just freaking moving. The craziest thing I saw on this list, Travis Hunter at a four GPA last fall. Seriously, that's amazing. For as much time as he spent on Twitch gaming and all this others and playing both ways, all this other stuff.
That's pretty dang impressive. I think a 4.0 anytime, regular student not doing anything else is impressive. 4.0 is not that hard to be honest with you. Just telling you it's not that bad. But to do it in the fall...
While he was also injured, rehabbing. That's pretty freaking impressive. That to me, and maybe I'm just the nerd in the room. Yes, maybe. It's great to see the bench numbers for the meathead over here to my right. But it's also nice to see some people applying themselves in the classroom as well. So Travis Hunter, shout out. Is it fair and not being a hater to say, I would like to see the schedule? The class schedule? I think it's reasonable. Yes. I think it's reasonable.
It's like so-and-so threw for 5,800 yards against who? It's the same thing. Had a 4-0 against who? I need to know. I need to see the schedule. Sorry. I'm not hating on the kid. Like I said, 4-0. I don't care if you're taking golf online. That's what I'm saying. It's still 4-0. It's impressive. I've never done it. I will say right now, I've never done it. Actually, I think in the summer when I...

Here in the fall, knee injury. How big of a blow is that? Big. Big. They had a really good one-two punch. Him and Jaden Blue were really good. Really good one-two punch there. Now, Jaden Blue is a workhorse. And think about this. Texas lost Jonathan Brooks last year. They lost already this year C.J. Baxter. This has been an unfortunate run for Texas here, losing their top-tier back. Luckily, Bijan was able to stay healthy a few years ago, but...
Yeah, it's been really unfortunate. Hate it for him and hate it for the Longhorns. It's a significant loss. Other ones of significance.
