We're going to talk a little bit about Missouri, of course, the course of the show today and then potentially making the playoff, why they can or cannot make the college football playoff. They start practice today. But Greg brought up a really nice point at SEC Media Days about their schedule. And while we talk about Ole Miss and Missouri, that sort of runway that they have to get off to a pretty good start,
We also just qualify all these teams to say, man, they go 10-2 from the SEC. They're in. Have you looked at Missouri and Ole Miss and thought about 10-2 might actually not get them in because of their schedules?
Yeah, I think it depends on how they're matched up. And I think you're right. We're recreating new narratives, Cole, because of the circumstances. So it's the automatic 10-2, and then you offer, well, maybe 9-3. Yeah, but you're right. It really helps if you're playing someone at a league, and it also helps if you're playing someone within the league. And Missouri, we know the game in Alabama, but beyond that, you're
They got dealt an incredible hand. I think we'll be told this once we get to the point of the season where the talking heads, and I'm looking at you, Greg, will be sitting up there on Tuesday night going through the whole routine. But they may not have a lot to show, especially, and this is another determinant, assuming their toughest games actually turn out to be high-quality teams.
How would you kind of assess a conference championship runner-up with a couple losses, say, from the Big 12 to a Missouri team that didn't play in their conference championship, lost a couple games, but is coming from the SEC? How do you think they'll be evaluated?
Well, I mean, I try to look at it as, you know, who have you played, not what league you're in. And I know that may sound crazy because I think there's this narrative that those of us who are from the SEC just automatically give SEC teams an extra game or an extra win. That's not true. But I think it would be very difficult for someone who didn't win the Big 12 to ultimately match up because I think even if you have a –
less than spectacular schedule, you're probably playing better competition. I think probably. But if you look at Missouri's toughest games, and let's say Alabama does the unthinkable and loses a couple of games, then those games are the same for other schools on the schedule. Those schools suddenly become devalued. I'll never forget, what was it, Greg, 16, when we made such a big deal about
Alabama and Florida State playing in a one versus three game. And then everybody wanted to use that game against Alabama at the end of the season because they didn't have any big wins when they had beaten the number three team in the country on the opening weekend. It just depends on how you want to view it.
Paul Feinbaum, he joins us each and every Monday. Thanks to our friends at Crane Works. You can see him on the SEC Network and hear him right here 2 to 6 p.m. weekdays. I haven't gotten your thoughts coming off of Big Ten media days, which were last week, and a couple of different coaches making some noise. It feels like Oregon has a lot of momentum coming out of Big Ten media days, maybe Nebraska a little bit. What were your takeaways just observing Big Ten media days from a distance? Well, I think from a distance, I mean, I look at that league and really am impressed.
It is a great league. Depending on how you view certain schools, it's on the same level as the SEC. I just marvel at the addition
of Oregon and Washington. And when it happened, I thought maybe they're just trying to stuff a couple of schools from a wayward conference into an already crowded field. But by far, those are far more impressive than UCLA and USC, not necessarily from a long-term standpoint, but from a this-year standpoint and right now. And I think they've got a fantastic league. I think Ohio State clearly is...
It should be the favorite, but Oregon isn't more than a hair or two behind them. I mean, there was a lot. Let's be honest. There were far more storylines at Big Ten media days than there were SEC media days. I mean, I found plenty to talk about with at least four or five of the different schools. When you think about kind of the Big Ten and the SEC games,
I guess you would say horse race. I don't necessarily think that anyone's going to look at the big 10 and say, Oh yeah, Pat, for sure. They have better players. They have better teams. What have you? I think it's a different product. I'm not sure that they're really that comparable. But it seems to think that there is this big 10 superiority that you could almost hear in the analysis. I'm listening to Sirius XM and their live coverage from big 10 meetings is like the level of superiority for some of their analysts. Like goodness gracious alive. Like,
Why is it with the addition of Oregon, a middling UCLA, a middling USC, and in Washington that is coming off a national championship performance, but their first relevant year in quite a while, where is this superiority coming from?
Well, Greg, I'm, I mean, if you weren't such a veteran, I would advise you not to listen to some of these people, but I know that you can figure that out on your own. But, you know, I think what it is, uh, cover the big 10 and have a superiority complex. Um,
at least a legitimate one, I should say. I mean, I get the Ohio State people. I mean, they're a different breed, and Michigan people did the unthinkable last year, but it is not a better league. I'm impressed with the league, the fact that they have two new schools that really do matter. That was part of what my point was of
a minute ago. But I think it's just, it's biased. And that's easy for me to say. If you look around and see what people say about my comments, that's fine. I'm used to it. When you come up with an original SEC bias line on any of us, I will be impressed. But I think they're just so sick of the SEC dominance
So sick of the loud megaphone that people in the SEC have. So what are they crowing about? They have a national championship. And it was at the expense of an SEC team in Alabama in the semifinals, which is fine. When Alabama beat Ohio State a couple years ago by 28 points, nobody really looked at that as anything other than an expected result.
Paul, I wanted to get NCAA a couple of things that look like they might be problematic down the road. Booster is going to be prohibited from entering into NIL deals with athletes. Also saw the word clearinghouse for NIL deals is what I thought was really interesting, as in like clearinghouse was a good thing before. Kept a lot of guys from being able to compete a lot of different times academically. Is this going to be OK? Is it going to work with how we see some of the details trickling out of what this settlement could look like?
Remember, a lot of these details had to be included to get this thing across the goal line. My ultimate question, though, Cole, is regardless of what is in there,
uh, who is going to be around to enforce any of it. And I realized this is a court settlement. So maybe we're thinking, well, uh, the jurisdiction level goes beyond the NCAA, but, uh, I sincerely doubt it will. Um, I, I just think it's a, it's a bunch of lawyers putting a bunch of things, uh, in an agreement so they can, uh, they can end this case. And I guess maybe I shouldn't have been surprised because plaintiff attorneys, uh, have a specific purpose, but the idea that, uh,
They were what was the final number? I mean, they were going to walk away with a couple of billion dollars in this deal. Or I mean, it was just astonishing and reminded me what the what the genesis of all this was when it started. I don't I don't think it was to help athletes in the future. I think it was to pocket line the pockets of lawyers, which is usually the case in lawsuits. Always great. Appreciate the time. Look forward to catch up with you again next week.
A pleasure. Thank you.
