My dad works in B2B marketing. He came by my school for career day and said he was a big ROAS man. Then he told everyone how much he loved calculating his return on ad spend.

This Jocks 94.5 podcast is brought to you by Millennium Satellite and Video. Log on to MSBnow.com. TV excellence everywhere. That's Millennium. McElroy and Kubrick in the morning starts now. All right, welcome back in. McElroy and Kubrick in the morning. This will be different, but it will be fun. Sophie Hudson, Melanie Schenkel, the Big Boo cast. If you've never heard it, it's just fun. That's the only way I know how to describe it.
Pop culture, some sports, a lot of college football, a lot of college sports, shopping, maybe some cooking, home renovations, a little bit of everything. Talk about trips, vacations. Mellie, I want to start with you. We're in Texas for SEC Media Days. You are a diehard Texas A&M fan, first and foremost.
Greg, do we have our microphone going? I hope. Make sure we get that. Now it is. Try that, Melanie. No, that's not going. Still no go? That's not it. Conrad, if you're nearby, we need you to come and help here. He's taking a nap probably. Here, we'll figure it out. Sophie's just going to trade. That is strange. Is there like a – hang on. What?
Is there like a little clicker button? Oh, yeah. Well, this on button usually gets it. Yeah, here it is. Full bore right there. We got actual speed. Okay. There you go. I've got it. Cole and Greg, not the strongest technique right now. We're going to resist. You didn't tell me to turn it on. That's what I'm going to say. In fairness, I would not have guessed that that had an on button. The Rhodes Scholar finalist did figure it out. Yeah.
All right. So SEC media is in the state of Texas. Now, you live in my home away from home, San Antonio. That's right. Your favorite place. The Riverwalk is my favorite walk, by the way, of all walks. How does it feel just to have this in Texas?
think it feels pretty good. You know, I came a couple of years ago when it was in Atlanta, but I drove up. Same thing? Dallas, Atlanta? Almost the same. Listen, drove up I-35, the construction that never ends, yesterday and made it here. And I'm excited to have SEC in Texas. I think it's fun. Yeah. I don't know if Greg would ever answer this honestly. Is there a little bit of A&M folks don't really, like...
except Dallas. They kind of want Houston. I feel like Houston is yours and Dallas is kind of Texas's. Am I right there? Am I wrong there? That feels kind of accurate. It feels accurate. I kind of think Dallas, no offense. I'm a Houston girl at heart. I was raised in Houston. So when I come to Dallas, it's just a little...
non-Texas to me. It feels like it's almost on the border. I'm sorry. I'm just... That's my heart. I'm a South Texas girl. I'm a San Antonio girl. It's very different. Yeah. I mean, I'm from Dallas. Fort Worth feels a little bit more like A&M Speed. Like...
I understand what you mean. Like, there's suits and boots in Fort Worth. In Dallas, it's like, here's my Range Rover, and then I'm going to get out of that, and I'm going to get in my Maserati, and then I'm going to get out of that, and I'm going to get in my truck, and then I'm going to put my 10-gallon hat on and wear a buckle the size of Texas, frankly. It's just a little more...
It's flashy. It's very flashy. It's flashy. It's got some California vibes. I have noticed that a lot of the females that are working here today are in cowboy boots. Yes. They normally would not be in cowboy boots. Okay. There's a girl from...
an entity that covers another school across the way, cowboy boots. Like, Laura Rutledge came to dinner last night, cowboy boots. And she's like, oh, no, I wear boots all the time. I was like, you live in Connecticut. You don't wear boots every day. If they were easier to pack, I would have brought cowboy boots. They're just too difficult to pack. 100%. And it's too hot. Like, I don't feel like I can break out the cowboy boots for me until, like, September. I will if I have to, but it's not. I know.
It's still hot. But it's football season. So then you're going to wear your boots to football games. Sophie, how are you today? We want to welcome you into the conversation. Thank you, Carl. Listen, I'm just so happy to be here. I could walk around here for the rest of my life.
and be so content. Oh, 100%. Yeah, just people watch and school watch and it's fantastic. Alright, so Jeff Lebby coming in Mississippi State. Are we excited? Are we starting to gain a little momentum? How are we feeling about the season? This is the official kickoff of the season for a lot of folks. No, I'm excited. I really am. And I think probably
I think he's done a good job in the portal the last little bit. I think they've filled in some missing pieces. And I like that he's gritty. I think they're
I think there are a lot of question marks across the board in terms of teams and not really knowing how it's going to play out. So I'm excited to see what he does. How's our hair clip situation for media days? Are we good? We're good. I did not go get a new one at the pants store. If people don't know, that's actually how we met you because I had a malfunction. It really wasn't a malfunctioning clip when we met. It was just user error. But, yeah, I made sure I had my A game. What is the pants store of Dallas?
Like the clothing version of Buc-ee's. Oh, Neiman Marcus. There you go. It's fair. Good call. Melanie, let's get down to business here. Okay. The Jim Schlossnagel moved to Texas. I'm ready for this conversation. You wanted to make me mad. That's it. You wanted to make me mad. You're at your best when you're mad. Here's the thing. It was a terrible mood. Did his dark agenda ruin my year? For a day, it did. It did. It did.
But what I'm going to say is that we have emerged from that better than we were before. And so I'm super excited. So I can no longer be mad. Listen, he's welcome. I wish him all the best wherever he goes. Thank you. I really don't. No, I don't. You're taking the Oklahoma approach to when Lincoln Riley left. Like, oh, we're better off without him.
No, but I think we 100% are. I'm excited about Michael Early. I think that he's the heart and soul. I think that the players love him. I think they respond to him. I think he's killing it in the portal. We got all of our major players back. So I'm excited. I feel good about it. Now, the Tuesday after the College World Series...
Did I feel good about it? No, I didn't. Did I have a lot of dark thoughts? I did. But I think it was when you see what everything happened in a week and where we've come out, I feel really good about it. And I feel excited about next season. And I may or may not have already reserved a room in Omaha for next year because I feel like it's the comeback tour. I feel like we're coming back.
Like, as in all the players in the portal and then back out of the portal, I guess. Yes. Baseball players. So we got, I mean, everybody who went in the portal, which is, I understand when the coaches change, you've got to go in the portal to protect yourself. And, you know, you don't know what's going to happen and who we're going to hire and what that's going to look like. But I think once they saw who we came in and hired, they said, you know what, we're back. And so I think to get Jace LaViolette back and Hayden Schott back and Caden Sore back and Caden Kemp back, like, we've just got, just,
our team. And then you look at some of the pitchers that we're getting and I just, I feel really, really good about the staff and about where we're going. We trust you. None of our listeners know who those people are. Yeah, that's okay. Listen, it's going to be good. Here's what I'm going to tell you. We'll put it on. We just don't know the names. I thought LaVie Lett played hockey. So it's good to know. I thought he was French.
Come on, Greg. Listen, I have a question for Greg, though, because when Melanie was in Birmingham the last time, we went to Tuscaloosa to watch the Aggies play. Now, I'm a Mississippi State person, but my...
algorithm on social media now thinks that I'm an Aggie because she pulled me in in the postseason. What's up with Alabama fans in baseball? Because y'all have a great program. You have a great coach. Stadium's awesome. You have a great stadium. For a long time, the stadium was terrible. Sure, but it's not anymore. And we were like, where are the people? Where are the people? Why are they not supporting baseball? You know, I'll tell you what was tricky. When they were renovating the stadium and everybody had to play in Hoover,
We had to play all of our games in Hoover for like an entire year. Right. And that was challenging. And I think what transpired with the coach last year was really troubling. Sure. So I think it's just going to take people like a year to just kind of
All right, that was extremely traumatic. Oh, no doubt. And that team was amazing. I'm so mad about just how that went down. And, like, look, they're going to be fine. I'm not worried about them at all. But that was, I think, something that turned a lot of people off significantly. And they'll come back now. They needed a year to just kind of suppress, just kind of, I think, acknowledge and just kind of move through some of the feelings that
that I think we all had to process. When your coach gets fired for gambling, that is really disturbing. That's tough. That's a blow. It's super disturbing. Is it like when your coach leaves for your arch rival the day after? You know what's funny, though? You don't win the national championship. Is it like that, Greg? I've been recruiting for him for months. Yeah, exactly. Is it like that? According to all my Aggie friends, though, that's not even really a rivalry anymore. I don't know.
We don't need him. I will never say that. It is a rivalry. I'm glad you acknowledge it. 100% it is. I feel like on the Longhorn side, they like to say they don't care about us. But I see that they did need to follow us to the conference that we left them for. So who's doing what is what I'm saying. Mission accomplished. I even told her. I was like, Cole's going to try to make you mad.
And listen, well done, Cole. Well done. Let's just keep going down that path. Okay. Let's revisit Jimbo Fisher's exit as a Texas football coach. I saw, we were just talking about my friend Jimbo because I did see yesterday on a post that apparently he's spending some of our money because he's on an African safari right now. So listen, I wish him well. I hope he enjoys that axis that he shot yesterday.
Listen, I'm not sad. I'm excited about the new season. There again, onwards and upwards. I'm just believing that we're in a better spot than we were last year. So we'll see. But I did listen to your preview yesterday, which I think the gist, if I can sum it up, is, huh, we'll see. We'll see. We were talking about that earlier in the show, though. There's...
this giant log jam of teams in the league that are that. Yeah. That we think if this goes this way, they might be pretty good. They could win 10 games. But if that doesn't go that way, they might win six or seven. We just don't,
The tier is sort of low tier two, high tier three feels like, what, Greg, seven, eight teams we said? Yeah, probably. The thing that I think is also strange, I don't know about y'all, well, Mississippi State can certainly relate to this. Oh. But, like, what is good? You know what I mean? I think that's challenging. Like, if you're an Alabama fan, good is 12-0. Yes. You know what I mean? Eight and four. Or, like, 11-1. God damn.
forbid you lose one in the regular season. Eight and four. So I think we're having a tough time. And if you look at Vegas, like Vegas' win totals and like how they assess what's good, there's not a single team in the country that's win total is above ten and a half. Like and there's also...
Most teams in the SEC are at like 7.5. And that's not normal. So I guess it's going to be hard for us as fans to kind of acknowledge, hey, that was a really good year. They went 7-5. But hear me out. That was a really good year. And I think it's going to take some time to kind of readjust and rewire our brains there.
I feel like as an A&M fan, if we can, number one, keep our quarterback healthy all year, because we haven't done that since Kellen Maughan, that would feel like a victory. I feel like already knowing that we're not going to have all 11 A&M games, that feels like a victory over last year. So, you know, if we could get to...
nine wins, I think would be amazing for Elko's first year. That would be a great season. Playoff season. Yeah. Notre Dame in a non-conference. You're in the playoff discussion, I think. The losses. Yeah. Yeah. And for Levy, if he gets to a bowl game, that's amazing. A hundred percent. Yeah. I mean, not to say, not to say Greg, that we have low standards. I'm not saying that. No. I am saying if Dan Mullen had ridden that sucker out, like there'd be a statue by now, you know, like if,
The thing also could have turned in a heartbeat, though. He had it rolling a little bit, but at the same time, at some places, you're always an injury two or two away from a four and eight. And I think Mississippi State is one of those places that is just not going to have collectively the depth of a Florida or a Georgia or a Texas or a Bama. So I just think it's...
I think A&M is going to be really good this year. I think they're a top 25 team. Mississippi State, I just don't know about. Okay. Not because I don't love Leb. I do. Well, there are a lot of question marks. It's so quarterback dependent. And I think their quarterback's good. But I think there's other positions that I just don't know. Like I said, they could win eight games.
Lord, would it be? Would it be eight games? I mean, I think that would be a huge win for us. Absolutely. All right, well, our listeners can get a big win, guys, by calling Wayne's.
If you need to keep roaches, ants, fleas, ticks away from your home, they provide a perimeter of protection around your home, secures a defense against roaches, ants, fleas, and ticks. Is that okay? Yeah. We'll come back and talk about how nervous you guys are to do Paul's show tomorrow. Oh, my gosh. Yep. Are you taking calls?
We don't know. I hope not. Surely not. Listen, nobody's going to call us. Nobody's going to call and have a question for us. You'd be surprised. You'd be amazed. You'd be surprised. Also, I want to know from each of you when we come back, one person affiliated with this whole ordeal that you're looking forward to seeing, that maybe you haven't met or that you would like to meet. We'll do that next on Macaroni and Kubrick in the morning. Okay.
Welcome back in. McElroy and Kublik in the morning, Monday, July 15th, 837. Right here on Jocks 94.5. Sophie Hudson, Melanie Schenkel of the Big Boo Cast joining us now live on Radio Row. How long has the Big Boo Cast been going on?
Since 2007. We didn't know what a podcast really was in 2007. But Sophie's husband... You were doing AOL dial-up? Pretty much. We recorded on whatever the messenger was for Mac at the time. That's what we recorded on. Yeah, like instant message. We would record...
And I had some Internet issues, so we only recorded about two episodes a year from 2007 until about 2012. Right. And it is amazing that it's 2024 and she still has those Internet issues. She really does. She does. Listen, if it's windy, we're toast. That's right. The Internet's never really gotten better. Living in San Antonio, that's great. That's perfect. It's all fine. Yeah, so it's been a minute. I mean, but it's been fun. So I asked you before we went to break if there was one person you could meet that's sort of affiliated with this whole thing.
Who would that be? Obviously, would not mind meeting Jeff Levy just because he's a – We could possibly facilitate that. Okay, thank you. That – but I will tell you, like, probably my biggest one, and I know he's not active in the coaching part of things anymore, but Nick Saban, listen –
I would love to meet Nick Saban just because I feel like he is a walk-in talk-in master class in leadership. He is. He is that. Yeah. So, anyway. I'm not sure if he would want to have anything to do with you. Sure. I'm going to go with you, by the way. That's fair. Yeah, that feels fair to me, too. I love the guy. Like, no one had a bigger impact on my life outside of my dad than Nick Saban. I'm good. You know, I don't stand this whole week. We're cool. Like, we're fine.
I'll be on the set with them in an hour and a half, and I'm dreading it. We'll be fine. Okay, so let's just cross that off my list then. Like, y'all settled that for me. We'll move on to the next one. You're good. Exactly. Josh Maxson, who's formerly the Alabama SID, is now currently Saban's handler at Alabama. Shared a great story last night with us. We ran into him in the lobby, and he said, I'll give you an idea of kind of where he is mentally. He said about, I think it was not last Monday, but like the Monday of Fourth of July week.
He called Josh. He said, okay, going to media day is going to work. Here's what I need from you. I need a few minutes with all 16 SEC head coaches. Okay, wow. And he said, and here are my times.
Tuesday, 7 to 10. Friday, 8 to 11. And next Monday, he gave them like three times of three hours. And Josh was like, okay. He said, and I made 14 happen. So I felt good about that. I'd love to know the two he didn't get. I would tell me too. I bet you could guess.
One may have been on the show already today. However, I don't think that was by their fault. I think it just kind of happened that way. Didn't work in their time slot. It is. Yeah. I do think the other was by choice, and I will not share that one. But it's just kind of where he is mentally. He is dialed in to coming to media days and being, I guess, similar to what he was as a head coach. Yeah. I like it. We learned a little bit about head coaches from you guys because you were at media days two years ago? Two years ago. Yeah.
And we had kind of a little bit, we didn't really have a responsibility. That would be a strong word. That's a strong word. We were allowed to sort of tag along in a certain area of media days. And so we got a lot of good first impressions, which was fantastic. I mean, it was, for us, it was really all we needed. So Brian Kelly was just walking by a few moments ago. What were your first impressions of him? Oh.
He smelled fantastic. I mean, like, really. Really nice cologne. Whatever. Aftershave, I don't know what it is. It was a good situation. It really was. And, you know, here's what we're not going to do. We're not going to say, hey, Coach Kelly. I've never worn cologne. Do we need to get on board? Are we missing the boat here? I think I had the curve cologne. Oh, well done. I think I had Abercrombie Fierce in high school. Oh, that's good. Greg, you were coming in hot.
With an abracrombie beard. Yeah, nice. Kind of set the tone as a 16-year-old redhead. Yeah, it really... I had to use whatever special powers I could use. High school was polo. Okay. If you didn't have polo cologne in high school, you were just poor. No, what were you doing? Which we kind of were, but still, we found a way to have polo cologne.
That's right. Priorities. Not since college, though. I have not had cologne since college, though. Well, I'm just saying we noticed. Yeah, we did notice. That was the only one we noticed. I will say that that day, because we got to see up close with the coaches and a lot of the athletes, I'm going to say that it increased our respect for the shoe game. Like the different shoes were admirable. Like it really was something. Every time, it's funny you say that, because I've actually left, as a former shoe connoisseur myself,
I feel like taste in shoes has really gone down as a society. Okay, interesting. I feel like now some of the shoes, and Conrad Van Order is a great example. He wears the ugliest shoes I've ever seen. He wears Yeezy slides most of the time. That's rough. It's like the uglier the shoes, the better now in some cases. Whatever happened to standard Jordan 1?
Jordan 3. It's a fair question. If you want to go 4, I can live with that. Okay. But when you start rocking some of these, like when you're on the Jordan 9s. Like the whole Balenciaga type thing. Oh, terrible. Like we're going to make the sole of this giant platform. Yeah. It looks like huge clogs. Yeah. I agree. You get more of like a modified ski situation with some of them. They're not fantastic. The other thing that blows my mind too, and I actually deal with this with golden gooses. So I'm not calling them out. Okay. This is not...
Everyone is fair here. Golden Goose is, to buy a shoe that looks worn for $700 to me is mind-blowing. Sure, I agree with that. Like, oh, this looks worn. I want that. I'll buy that. Yeah. It looks like someone scuffed it on the pavement. Yeah, drive over it with a car. Yeah, 100%. Yeah, tire tracks. But I look at some of these shoes that you could buy for $17, and instead you put a little Prada thing on there.
And we got action. So I want... This changes the game. We're really in our wheelhouse right now, y'all. If we're going to spend money, shouldn't you spend it on one of those ugly Balenciagas? Or should you buy a KED that has a Prada logo on it? No, not even a KED. I've shared this before.
When I do games on Sideline and it's going to rain, I will not wear my good shoes. Yeah. So I'll go to Walmart and I'll buy a brand new pair of like the Mall Walker Specials for literally $9.99. And it is amazing. The last time I did it was in Tuscaloosa. It was supposed to rain and it didn't. How many people are like, love the kicks, man? I'm like, yeah.
Listen, my daddy's 92 years old, right? A product of the silent generation, like old school. And he has contended for my whole life that everything is made in one factory, right? It's in Alexander City. It's Russell. That's right. It's on the way to Lake Martin. Yeah, exactly. And you can stop off at the
store, but he's always contended everything's in one factory and you just get a different He may not be wrong. Well, listen. So, listen, Cole, you have just given him a lot of validation. And they're comfortable, which is crazy. They feel good. They changed it. They've just given Walmart freebies out. The Walt family needed it. Whatever their new mall walker special is now, it's not as attractive. You're allowed to talk about that. You're allowed to talk about that for about two more weeks before Pant Store comes back on as a client. Right. And then you're not allowed to talk about it.
talk about it anymore. You can only wear Sperry top tighters. I need some hokas from Pant Store next time they come back. Can we make that happen? There's a weight limit on those. And I'm over it. That's why we've got to be on it. The hokas are great. First impression, Kirby Smart.
Oh, he was fantastic. Oh, charming. So nice. He was so charming. Yes. That is not what a lot of people thought. Okay, no. Because here's the thing. He can flip the switch. Yeah. But when he walked into that room, because here's the thing. It was a lot of interns. It was a lot of young people. And I pay attention to who still says hi to everybody in the room when you don't know who they are or if they're important at all. And I felt like he made the effort to say hi to everybody in that room, which I thought was very nice. He shook everybody's hand. He thinks you might have a five-star middle linebacker. That's right. And I might. That's right. Maybe. Maybe.
Exactly. You can't just go say hey to mom and dad. It's got to be aunts, uncles, cousins, brothers, sisters. You've got to talk to everybody. Have you ever, and maybe there's someone that's no longer at their job, so I'd kind of prefer for you to lead in that direction here. Yes. Was there ever someone that you were like, I'm just not, I don't know about that person? Like...
Jimbo Fisher. Jim Slosnagle. We're sensing a trend here. The Jims. I'm going to say, dead to me. Goodbye. Enjoy Ohio State. Scott Woodward. Whatever.
Perfect. Train can keep on rolling. Well, you know who's dead to me? Dennis Franchoni. Oh, listen. Melanie and I had not known each other long, I don't think. No. And she told me when Coach Fran was coach at A&M that she and her best friend Gully would get so frustrated with his sideline demeanor that they used to scream at the television, look alive, Coach Fran. Look alive. Look alive.
Get excited. He just was like, he's looking at a Denny's menu. Right. I need to see some sort of excitement.
I need to see that you're invested. I'll be honest with you, a Denny's menu would elicit a pretty excited reaction. Hang on. All I had was a protein bar this morning. You have my attention. There we go. Pancakes with butter. Okay, we're in. I prefer Cracker Barrel, but we can make Denny's work. You know who made the strongest impression on us, I think, that year at Media Days was Sam Pittman. He's the ultimate people person. Let me tell you what. So nice. He came in that room, and you were just like...
I mean, you felt like you'd been reunited with an uncle. 100%. He's the most normal guy. Oh, my gosh. It's like, how are you a college football player? This job is way too ruthless for you. Yes. Like, why do you do this? Yeah. Every time I see him, and we have a really good relationship, but we don't talk a ton. Every time I see him, I feel like, like you just said, it's...
We've been best friends forever. Yeah, and we don't know him at all. But, like, he just was so warm when he came in that room. It was really sweet to see. Like, in five seconds, I was like, well, I think I'm a fan of yours forever. You know? He has that. SEC championship game, the last year he was at Georgia. Catherine and I went to the game as fans, and we were down on the field before the game, and she was pregnant with Locke.
And I saw Coach Pittman, and I was like, ah. And, you know, she's just kind of following me around, going all the different things. And we walk over, and he walked right past me. I, like, had my hand out. Literally, he walked right past me and puts his arm around Catherine and, like, puts his hand on her belly. He's like, how far along are we? Like, when's the due date? And I was just like, yeah, that's different. He's the best. What about Coach Stoops? Mark? Did we – I don't know that we –
Did we end up seeing him? I don't think they met Bob at Media Days two years ago. I don't know if you know, but he didn't end up at A&M. That was an unintended concept. You're going to like Elko. Have you met Elko yet? I haven't met Elko, but I've heard great things about him, and I really am excited about him. He's got some Sam Pittman vibes. I love that. He's a very normal guy, very approachable. Wait till you meet Caelan DeVore. Okay. You know what? He is the best. Okay. Awesome. Awesome.
Well, just we have a family friend who plays, and he said similar. Oh, for sure. I don't know if you know, but we know somebody that plays. We know somebody who knows somebody. But he's on the team. And we ran into him recently, and he said similar. He's a really good guy. So that's awesome. It's insane how good he is. I love to see it. I love to see it. Shockingly, five years ago, I would say...
If you had to categorize the coaches with one word, I'd say psychotic. Seriously. Think about the coaches five years ago. I mean, it's like... That's true. That's true. Like, now, everyone's quite pleasant. Everyone... I'm not saying that they're... I'm not saying that they're not crazy behind the scenes. Maybe they are. But, like, in a setting like this, everyone's pretty dang cool. Oh, because even...
