You know you want to make changes, you've got a lot you want to do in your life, but then you start thinking about those changes and you immediately start catastrophizing. You start worrying, you start thinking about all the reasons why it's not going to happen. This is so common and the reason why it's common is because somebody in your past either trained you to think this way
Or you've had so many bad things happen that you've trained yourself to assume and predict that bad things are always going to happen to you. There will be bad things that happen. There will. It's a fact of life. But if you are constantly allowing your mind to default
to thinking that bad things will happen or thinking that you're out of shape or thinking that you're a loser or thinking that you're not worthy or thinking that things aren't going to turn out.
it becomes your default mode of thinking. All day long you were shooting yourself in the foot with your own behavior and you didn't even know where the gun was coming from. It was in your own hand. And I say, so why is it relevant? We have been programmed to believe that when it doesn't work we are victims of the outside, when the truth is, no, 95% of the day we were playing programs that did not support us.
And as a result, at the end of the day, we didn't get that support, but we didn't see it. Why? Subconscious was below conscious was controlling your life. Think about most of your fears, most of your anxieties. Very few of them are in the right here, right now. They're usually horrible things that happened in the past that we'd like to avoid happening again.
Is this thought going to enhance my life or is this thought going to take away from my life?
And then when you start to realize that, you start to direct your actions where you put your energy into things that enhance your life and give you an opportunity to survive and to go beyond survival and really into thriving.
So the point is this, we are facing some rough times. The more thoughts you put into the negative aspect, the more thoughts you put into the fear, not only are you just wasting your energy, but as in the biology belief, these negative thoughts, these negative stresses actually impair your immune system and bring on disease itself. If you want to change your personal reality, if you want to change something about your life, you've got to change. And so the process of change then
It becomes the fundamental process of going from some person that's familiar and known to you and stepping out and beginning to make different choices and begin thinking differently and begin to behave differently and speak differently and feel differently. And if you start thinking, acting and feeling differently, our research shows without a doubt you're going to have dramatic changes in your biology. And if you do it enough times, you're going to become someone else.
Here's the thing about life. None of us wake up and say, today is the day I destroy my life. What we do is we kind of check out because it feels overwhelming. Or we check out because we're afraid. Or we check out because we start listening to self-doubt. And then we make these teeny tiny decisions all day long. And we don't even realize it. A decision to not get up on time. A decision to not eat the right thing. A decision to snap at your kids. A decision to...
Not speak in a meeting, a decision to not look for a job, a decision to not deal with your finances, a decision to not call your parents, like whatever it is. All day long, these tiny decisions that take you so far off track. We know what's wrong with life. It's rife with suffering and insufficiency and deception and evil. It's all of that, obviously. Okay, what would make the journey worthwhile?
Well, you can ask yourself that. It's like, all right, in order to bear up under this load, what is it that I would need to be striving to attain? And if you ask yourself that, that's to knock and the door will open. That's what that means. If you ask yourself that, then you will find an answer and you'll think you'll shrink away from it. You'll think, well, there's no way I could do that. It's like, well, you don't know what you could do. You don't know what's possible. And you're not as much as you could be.
And so God only knows what you could do and have and give if you sacrificed everything to it. You have to sacrifice that which is most valuable to you currently that's stopping you.
And God only knows what that is. It's certainly the worst of you. It's certainly that. And God only knows to what degree you're in love with the worst of you. There's some mechanism inside of us. There's something that wants us to walk a path that's never been walked before. And the thing that makes it so hard is right now inside of you is a desperate desire for that to be easy.
But it's not going to be easy. It's going to be hard. You're going to fail. You're going to stumble. You're going to fall on your face. There are a lot of people who are biting their fingers in fear that they might lose their jobs. But there are few people who have decided within themselves, I'm going to make it. Some people aren't waiting to be cut. Some people are moving on their own because they feel within themselves, I've got what it takes to make it.
They're not afraid about tomorrow because of how they see themselves, because of what they feel that they deserve, because of what they feel that they can create for themselves. Because these people have decided as they look at the future, as they look at themselves, there's a way where there's a will, there's a way for me to begin to create a way out of no way. And when you have that kind of consciousness, when you have that kind of spirit, nothing can stop you.
Nothing! Your goal is to be happy, confident, and optimistic.
The way that you achieve this is by making these positive responses so automatic that you remain predominantly happy, confident and optimistic. No matter what happens, you can achieve this result by taking specific proven practical steps that have been used by millions of people and which work with virtually unfailing certainty.
The starting point is accepting complete responsibility for every aspect of your life. You demonstrate this attitude of responsibility by exerting your freedom to choose the thoughts you wish to hold in your conscious mind. You choose to think positive, constructive thoughts rather than negative, destructive thoughts. Psychologists refer to this as the cognitive control method.
Cognitive control simply means that you control your thoughts, keep them positive and repeat positive messages to yourself over and over until they become automatic responses to daily life. The first mental fitness technique is that of positive self-talk or the use of positive affirmations.
The way you talk to yourself has an inordinate impact on your thinking and feeling. Many researchers, including Dr. Martin Seligman of the University of Pennsylvania, have discovered that high-performing men and women talk to themselves differently from low-performing men and women. Basically, your self-talk or your inner dialogue determines the tone of your emotional life.
You are happy or sad, positive or negative, depending on what you say to yourself and how you interpret events to yourself as you go along.
For example, if you are cut off in traffic and you immediately become angry and begin thinking about how stupid and irresponsible and what a bad driver the other person is, you will trigger a very different reaction than if when you are cut off in traffic, you excuse the other person by thinking to yourself that he or she must be late, distracted, or must not have seen you.
It may be exactly the same external event, but the way you interpret it and your ensuing conversation with yourself will determine whether you experience positive or negative emotions about the situation. The starting point of using positive self-talk is to interpret everything that happens to you in a favorable way. Become what W. Clemens Stone called an inverse paranoid. Imagine that the whole world is in a giant conspiracy to help you to be successful and happy.
Imagine that everything that happens is happening to teach you something valuable and to move you closer to achieving your most important goals. Just as a paranoid is convinced that there is a conspiracy against him, an inverse paranoid is convinced that there is a conspiracy for him or her.
Practice the wonderful mental quality of serendipity. In the fairy tale, the three princes of Serendip traveled around finding that every apparently negative or calamitous event they witnessed turned out to be positive and beneficial in the end. Make it a game to look for good in every situation. The law of expectation says that whatever you expect with confidence becomes your own self-fulfilling prophecy.
When you develop an attitude of positive self expectancy, you become a more optimistic and cheerful person. Whatever happens, you immediately interpret it in the best way possible. In Napoleon Hill's famous book, Think and Grow Rich, he wrote that one of the characteristics of the most successful men and women in America is that they always look for the opportunity or benefit within every setback or obstacle.
Because of the law of substitution, if you are looking into every difficult situation for the lesson you can learn or for the possible opportunity it might contain, your mind will remain positive and you will continue to function at your best. Whenever you think of an upcoming event, talk to yourself in positive language. Perhaps the most powerful affirmation of all for building self-confidence is for you to repeat over and over 50, 100 times per day.
The words, I can do it. I can do it. I can do it. These simple words are the verbal antidote to the fear of failure, which, as you know, is the great destroyer of self-confidence and probably the primary reason for failure in adult life. However, you can change.
diminish the fear of failure in any situation by repeating, I can do it. I can do it. I can do it. Whatever you think of an event that causes you to feel nervous or insecure, whenever you have something coming up that fills you with trepidation, exert your powers of self-talk and self-suggestion by saying, I can do it to cancel out and override any negative emotions associated with it.
The most powerful affirmation for building self-esteem are the words, I like myself. I like myself. I like myself. These simple words, repeated often enough with energy and enthusiasm, will eventually be accepted by your subconscious mind.
As your subconscious mind accepts this message of self-liking, your self-esteem goes up and your ability to perform and your levels of effectiveness improve in every area of your life.
If you want to do your work better, just say, "I love my job. I love my job. I love my job." In their best-selling book, Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude, W. Clement Stone and Napoleon Hill recommend that you repeat several times a day the words, "I feel happy. I feel healthy. I feel terrific." One of my favorite affirmations,
Whenever I'm worried about anything is to cancel it by saying, I believe in the perfect outcome of every situation in my life. I believe in the perfect outcome of every situation in my life. You will find that it is almost impossible to worry and fret about anything while you are repeating this kind of positive message to yourself.
The most enjoyable moments are the ones where we are fully immersed in what we are doing. When we are intently focused on one single thing is when we experience peace of mind. In other words, no thought. Since the act of thinking is responsible for much unhappiness and suffering in the world,
It would be worthwhile to transcend thought altogether. Without thought there is only peace and pure bliss. Most people can't imagine what it would be like to not think. Thinking is the human condition, but it can be a blessing or a curse. Thinking is actually not necessary in many cases. There lies an incredible intelligence in our bodies that has the ability to guide us through life successfully.
more successfully, in fact, than if we were to think our way through life. Thinking clouds our instinct and intuition and can actually inhibit our progress. When we are completely free of thought and in the present moment, we can make decisions with ease and experience happiness in everything we do.
Even the simplest of things can bring you immense joy when you experience them as they are. That is to say, experience them without judging or labeling them in any way.
You've experienced this state of no thought before. Think back to some of the best moments of your entire life. It's very likely that those moments were spent in a state of no thought, and that's exactly why those moments were so enjoyable.
There are a variety of ways that you can get into the present moment and experience no thought, but the easiest of them all is to simply do the activity that brings you the most joy.
Perhaps it's playing a musical instrument, reading Hiking Outdoors, or spending time with your children. Whatever it is that you thoroughly enjoy, you should do more of it. Immerse yourself in the activities that get you out of your head and into the present moment because those activities serve a great purpose. They serve the purpose of allowing you to realize your true nature and showing you that joy and happiness is your natural state beneath everything.
all the layers of thought you have accumulated over the years while these activities may seem like only temporary relief from your pain they actually allow you to evolve and heal your pain when you find your bliss and immerse yourself in it you are one step closer to realizing that happiness is always available to you the more bliss you experience the easier it is to find it again
Eventually, you will be able to feel happy at your own choosing, no matter the circumstances.
Do more of what you love to do and you will experience more happiness and have more love to give to others. Many people who seem cold and withdrawn from the world are people who feel as if they have little to live for. If they only discovered their passion and lost themselves in artistic expression of that passion, they would have more to live for than they could now imagine.
Doing what you love and what makes you happy is not selfish. It is one of the most generous things you could do for others. Only when your cup is full can you give anything away. Find your bliss so that others may be inspired to do the same.
