Hey English learners, welcome to another phrasal verb episode. I hope you're all doing great. I hope that your English learning is going well and that you feel like you're learning a lot of new phrasal verbs with these episodes. In today's phrasal verb episode, we're going to look at two phrasal verbs. The first one is blow over and the other one is blow through.
So, first let's define these phrasal verbs. Blow over. What does this mean?
When something blows over, we usually use this to talk about some type of trouble, some type of scandal or something. So when something like that blows over, it fades away and becomes forgotten without serious consequences. For example, I could say, "Don't worry, this scandal will blow over soon."
So, what I'm saying there is eventually people will forget all about this. It'll eventually be forgotten. The consequences won't be that great. So, don't worry. I know it's a scandal now, but it will blow over soon. Okay?
And the other phrasal verb is blow through. So what does this mean? Well, blow through means to spend or waste something rapidly, very fast. So for example, I could say he blew through his inheritance money in less than a year.
So in this sentence, I'm saying that he inherited money from someone who died. And instead of investing it wisely or saving some of it or just using it,
In a good way, he blew through his money, that inheritance money, meaning he just spent it all really quickly in less than a year in this case. So that's blow through.
Now, let me talk about a couple different things, and I'll use these phrasal verbs over and over again so you can hear them multiple times, and hopefully by the end of this episode, you'll feel comfortable with actually understanding these phrasal verbs, how they're used, and maybe you might even try to use them in your own sentences.
So first, let me talk about arguments in marriage. So when it comes to marriage, when it comes to being married to someone, there are plenty of challenges that you will definitely face. There are plenty of
hurdles and obstacles and just things that cause issues in marriage. We all know that, right? And of course, arguments in marriage are normal.
I'm not saying that it's good to argue every single day. No, but arguments happen when you spend your life with someone, right? So things can definitely get heated in...
the context of arguments, like you might start arguing about something and maybe even raise your voice, or sometimes there's even yelling, there are feelings that are hurt, there are just other problems that happen, but usually, hopefully, these arguments blow over and are soon forgotten.
Hopefully in your marriage and anyone's marriage, when there is an argument, it eventually blows over even if it was a heated argument. And arguments can happen about many different things in marriage.
One common reason for arguments is simply miscommunications, a lack of communication, or just not communicating well. So problems with communication. I'm sure you've experienced this.
I have definitely experienced this. And actually, because my marriage is a bilingual marriage, that has the opportunity to happen maybe even more than in a conventional marriage with just one language. Because sometimes there might be an issue with like...
the other person's understanding their, uh, comprehension of what you're saying. And that can cause, uh, further issues with communication. You get my point, but in general, uh, we're not perfect at communicating. Uh, we make mistakes. We say things, uh,
in the wrong way or not the way we should have said them. And this can cause arguments, of course. This happens and
Sometimes these arguments can get nasty even, but hopefully they blow over afterwards. Hopefully they don't last a really long time and hopefully you're not arguing for days about the same issue and it's just not getting resolved.
If there is a heated argument that happens, hopefully the couple can make up, as we say, like you forgive each other and you get things right, and then the argument can just blow over and you don't need to talk about it.
afterwards, hopefully. Another thing that people might have arguments about in marriage is when you're not on the same page as your spouse, meaning you don't see eye to eye, you don't have the same opinion or perspective when it comes to something. And this can lead to conflicts because you have
conflicting desires maybe, conflicting needs, conflicting viewpoints, and that is often a recipe for arguments. So that can happen and spouses can argue with each other simply because they're not on the same page and a simple disagreement in terms of their
their viewpoint, uh, or their desire or whatever, uh, can turn into a big argument and can cause problems, uh, with that couple. But again, hopefully if this leads to some type of big argument, hopefully the argument will blow over after a few hours. Sometimes it's after a day or two, but, uh,
It should be just after some minutes or hours. Hopefully these arguments don't last more than a day. I know sometimes they do, but hopefully they don't and they can blow over pretty quickly, right?
Another thing that might cause arguments within a marriage is when people bring up the past. They bring up negative things that happened in the past and use those things against their spouse. That's never a good thing. That can usually lead to arguments. Really, it means that people aren't fully forgiving each other.
for past things, right? They're still bringing them up and using them. And I don't think we should use people's past against them if it's supposed to be forgiven and not brought up again every time there's a fight, right? But that happens, right?
We all know about this, and that can lead to arguments, and hopefully those arguments can be resolved quickly, and they'll blow over soon. You get the theme here, right? And just a couple more things. Arguments can happen because of hurt feelings, like one of the two people
hurts the other person's feelings either intentionally or unintentionally, but either way, when someone has their feelings hurt, uh,
that tends to lead to arguments. So that can become the cause of an argument, which will hopefully blow over soon after. And one other cause of arguments in marriage, this is one of the biggest ones, is money problems. This can be a major issue for certain couples if they don't see eye to eye in terms of
money management, how they want to spend their money, or just if they don't have a lot of money and they feel really stressed and they can barely pay their bills, that can cause them to be stressed all the time. They might be anxious every day because of that. And when you're constantly stressed and anxious,
you are more likely to have arguments with people. And so that can be a major issue. And there are some arguments that happen as a result of just money issues or disagreements about money.
But hopefully, if that happens to you, that argument can blow over after a couple hours or so. And hopefully, you solve your money problems and forget all about that argument.

But speaking of money and money management, that's the other thing I want to talk about.
Let's talk a little bit about the differences in how people manage their money. Some people save a lot of money. There are some people that like doing this or they learned to save money from a young age. Maybe their parents taught them to save money. And some people are the exact opposite.
and they blow through their paycheck really fast when they get it or whatever money they receive not just their paycheck but any money that falls into their hands they blow through that fast I'm sure you know someone like that or maybe you are someone like that and
I'm not trying to pick on you or anything. I'm just using this illustration to talk about this topic and use the phrasal verb blow through. So I know many people who blow through their money really quickly. People who might say that they want to save money, but their actions don't really work.
Point to that their actions kind of say otherwise so I've talked to people who Say that they really want to save money they want to learn how to Economize and put aside money save for certain things but when they get paid
They forget all about that and they want to go and spend it. And that's just how a lot of people are. OK, and saving money doesn't always mean that you're better, you have a better life or whatever.
No, there are many people that save a lot of money and they're unhappy. And I know people who blow through their paychecks and it seems like they never have extra money in their bank account and they're actually pretty happy. They're pretty content in life. So I'm not saying that savers are good and spenders are bad. No. No.
I'm just painting a picture here. So some people might receive big payments for different reasons. And maybe because they feel like they have all this money now because they received this big payment, maybe they got a bonus or I don't know, for some reason they suddenly have more money.
Some people have trouble just keeping that money, taking part of it and putting it aside to save, and they simply blow through it all. And in a very short period of time, they have no money again, and they...
or may not regret blowing through that money really quickly. But that's something that can happen if people either regret
aren't accustomed to saving and they don't really know how to manage their money well, or they simply don't want to. Because I know people that aren't really that interested in saving a lot of money. And that's okay. If that's their choice, then they can do that, right? We can all make different choices depending on what we want to do.
with our lives. So some people blow through money, but they do it on purpose. It's not like an accident. Uh, they were trying to save, but they ended up spending it all. No, this is some people just accept the fact that, uh,
They spend everything that they earn. And I wanted to mention this. This is a pretty startling statistic. In the U.S. particularly, I'm sure this happens in other countries, but I'm only familiar with this topic in the U.S., professional athletes often end up going broke after they retire.
And people are always very surprised that this can happen. Like how can someone who earned so much money go broke just a few years after retirement?
And I found this statistic, I don't know if it's correct or not, but I saw this, that in terms of former NFL players, like people who played American football professionally, 78% of these people face financial hardship after retirement, meaning they have money problems. So
So 78% of them, more than three-fourths of NFL players, the majority of whom probably make a lot of money compared to you and me, right? 78% of them face financial problems after retirement and 16% of them go bankrupt after
Meaning literally they can't pay their debts. They owe so much money. They can't pay it. They have like nothing in terms of, uh,
money they can use to pay off their debts. So 16% of these athletes, many of whom earn millions and millions of dollars, they blow through all of their money in a very short period of time and they go bankrupt. They literally end up broke, starved,
So it's pretty startling if you think about that. But this is how...
A lot of people act when they receive a lot of money. They feel like they're on top of the world. They spend so much money on so many different things. They don't really think too much about their long-term future, and they just get excited with all of this money in their hands, and they don't manage it well.
And unfortunately, they go bankrupt. Even though they were previously super rich people,
they end up broke. And it's sad, but it happens. And I have been guilty of not managing my money well and blowing through money quickly. I've done this on several occasions too, of course. So I'm also guilty of this. I've spent too much money on vacation, for example, and
I blow through my vacation budget before the vacation is over. That's happened to me before. Even my monthly budget just for normal things I need to buy. There have been instances when I've blown through that budget really quickly and like there are still more days in the month left and I've already spent all the money that I
I have to spend for that month. So this has happened to me too. It's happened to a lot of us. So this is something that many people know about.
All right. I hope that while I was talking, you heard these two phrasal verbs used many times and hopefully you feel more comfortable with them now.
