supporting_evidences Lisa Charlotte: 'I grew up atheist....And so for me, I wanted to have, I guess, like women and queer people with the knowledge of the Bible and the stories of the Bible that are queer and women centered to kind of combat what's happening in the world.' Elise Knorr: 'I grew up in a non-denominational evangelical Christian church, but that was really fraught with a lot of struggle and challenge for me because I was queer and closeted...And so I left, you know, I never kind of identified with Christianity. I never really believed in it. And then when I was coming out in grad school, I started I was just curious what gay church was like. So I started going to gay church...And I was just amazed.' Reverend Jacob Hero-Shaw: 'I didn't grow up like religious....she died by suicide when she was 19, right after high school. And for me, that was a big turning point.' Reverend Naomi Washington-Leapheart: 'So I think that institutions exist to preserve themselves, right?...But it means that I I have signed on to a risky proposition that if I follow Jesus, I I might just lose my life, both literally and figuratively, right?' Reverend Florentino Cordova: 'It was a way, again, of power and control....Just like Reverend Tino said, we want to actually look at the text of the Bible itself to find ourselves in its pages and to empower ourselves to reinterpret it.' Pastor Dawn Bennett: 'So the first thing I'll say right out the chute is that somebody told you it's wrong to be queer....But if you will just take a chance one more time, that's the beauty of the table right there is it's filled with people who have dared to believe that it just could be different this time.'
