Deep Dive

Key Insights

Which film topped the 2025 Oscar shortlists with the most mentions?

"Emilia Pérez" topped the 2025 Oscar shortlists with six mentions across five categories, including hair and makeup, sound, two songs, score, and international feature.

Why was "The Substance" considered an underperformer in the 2025 Oscar shortlists?

"The Substance" was considered an underperformer because it only made the shortlist in one category (hair and makeup) despite expectations it could also compete in sound and visual effects. This was surprising given its strong performance in early guild awards.

What were the notable snubs in the makeup and hairstyling category for the 2025 Oscars?

Notable snubs in the makeup and hairstyling category included "Furiosa," "Gladiator 2," and "Sasquatch Sunset," which were expected to make the shortlist but did not. "Waltzing with Brando" was a surprising inclusion instead.

Which film's score was a surprise inclusion in the 2025 Oscar shortlists?

The score for "Wicked" was a surprise inclusion in the 2025 Oscar shortlists, as it is a preexisting score, which raised questions about its eligibility and originality.

What was the biggest miss in the original song category for the 2025 Oscars?

The biggest miss in the original song category was Miley Cyrus' song "Beautiful That Way" from "The Last Showgirl," which was a Golden Globe nominee but failed to make the Oscar shortlist.

Why did "Furiosa" fail to make the visual effects shortlist for the 2025 Oscars?

"Furiosa" failed to make the visual effects shortlist likely due to its late release and the Academy's preference for other films like "Alien Romulus," which seemed to take its place as a standout in the category.

What was the significance of "Will and Harper" making the documentary shortlist?

"Will and Harper" making the documentary shortlist was significant because it overcame the Academy's usual aversion to celebrity-focused documentaries, indicating strong support for its unique story about Will Ferrell and Harper Steele's friendship and exploration of the trans community.

Which film was a surprising inclusion in the sound category for the 2025 Oscars?

"Joker: Folie à Deux" was a surprising inclusion in the sound category, as it had underperformed in other areas but was recognized for its strong sound design, likely due to its musical elements.

You're listening to Awards Magnet, a Gold Derby podcast hosted by Joy Singh and Christopher Rosen. Welcome back to Awards Magnet. I'm Christopher Rosen. I'm joined by Joy Singh. And Joy, so hot off the presses, the Oscar shortlists are here. Have you added Amelia Perez everywhere yet? Yeah.

I haven't added it yet, but I was way more bullish on it after last week. Like we talked about it. The industry really loves this movie, Joyce. No surprise. As we've known for months. And the shortlist loved this movie too. The shortlist. The shortlist has six mentions in five categories, Joyce, including the two songs, El Mal and Mi Camino.

Most honored shortlist. And the most honored movie on the shortlist this year. Congratulations to Amelia Price. Most appearances. Yeah. This is like winning. I don't even know what it would be like, right? It's like winning a practice. Like, you know, that kind of thing. Practice doesn't count though. True. So Amelia Price had six mentions. Hair, makeup, sound, two songs, score, international feature. Nothing really unexpected there, I would say. We'll go through these categories as we go. But anyway, Amelia Price. Yeah. I was not surprised by any of these.

No, I think with Amelia, it was more, it was less about like what it was going to make, but it was going to miss anything. True. Coming in second, it looked like was Wicked, Joyce, with four hair and makeup, sound, score, and VFX. I have to say, I'm a little surprised by the score, making it all the way through. The score. Yeah. Yeah, it made it. You know, I don't know if they'll make the final five, but I think, you know, probably the...

The Dune acolytes are peeved by this because, you know. It's already, we already know the score, right? I mean, like, I don't know. I don't know how they decide like what's original and what's not. It's the percentage. Okay. I don't know the percentage. It's math.

I don't know. I'm not good at math, Joyce. You know, you're not. I'm not good at reading. You're not good at math. You're not good at much. What was your best subject in school? I kind of don't even know. Social study? I was like... I was just talking about this about, like, my own... I was like a solid B student. I did just enough to get by. That was my life. I was... I was a...

An under-overachiever. Like, I knew I was good at school, but I had never, like, tried too hard. So I did, like, what I needed to do, but I knew I was really good at school. At some point, I don't know when it was. This is a great diversion. We're totally on track now. I'm more interested in this a little bit, but one thing I would say is at some point you realize, oh, like, yeah, you don't need to do, like, what is doing well in school? Nothing. And it's like, not everyone is...

everyone is a good test taker, you know, that doesn't show how smart you are. Yeah. I was like, I could get a B or I could get an A, but in the end, it doesn't really matter in the longterm scheme of things. No, no. Uh, I don't know how we even got here. Except when we talk about it here now. Talking about math, but now again, if a math teacher is listening to this, they may like your dumb ass. You don't even know how to do percentages of the score. And I guess I would say you're right about that, but also I didn't waste my time on it. Anyway, uh, Wiccan makes the score list there. Uh,

And congratulations. The other ones were Alien Romulus had three joy score sound and VFX. Gladiator 2 had three score sound and VFX. Dune Part 2, three hair makeup sound and VFX. No score, obviously. Mufasa with two VFX and song, but not the song that everybody expected.

No. And you know what? I saw Mufasa last night, Monday night. And then when I was reading the shortlists and I came across, I was like, which song was that? So the song that's referenced here that's eligible and to be Oscar nominated is Lin-Manuel Miranda did all the music for this movie is called Tell Me It's You. But we had been predicting because it was the submission, allegedly, I Always Wanted a Brother. Which is a bop.

I haven't seen it yet, Joyce. I haven't even listened. And I'm one of these where I'm like, I don't want to know if I do. I want to listen to the music before I see this great movie. But now I probably will because I want to hear these two songs. But we've seen Lin-Manuel Miranda in the past miss a potential Oscar win with Encanto because the wrong song in air quotes here got in.

Well, they submitted a different song. Right, they submitted the wrong song. Because the deadline was so early. Correct. So we don't talk about Bruno, which is a real banger. One of the great Disney animated songs of all time. Instead, they did El Orquíritas. Dos Orquítas. Dos Orquítas, yes. So I guess we'll go through these categories. One thing I always wonder with you, Joyce, just broadly speaking, we look at the shortlists.

This is, I think we're fond of saying, or I am, because it's like, you know, recency bias. When All Quiet on the Western Front was exploded here a couple of years ago, it was like, wow, the industry really liked this movie. And so going into this, at least for me, I was like, I wonder what movie will overperform that we're not expecting. And maybe that shows a strength across the branches that we didn't know about. Now, I had pegged the beloved movie, The Substance Choice, as that movie because...

was already going to get in presumably for hair and makeup. Sound felt like a contender there because of the shrimp eating alone and just how grotesque everything is. And visual effects. It was reported by Variety last week, I think, that it was one of the 20 films that was notified that it potentially could be on the shortlist, I guess. So it made that final push before the final push, I guess. So I was like, that's three right there. Maybe it gets in.

And they only got in one for hair and makeup. So I'm like, it had been doing very well with the guilds, obviously, overperforming or performing adequately or performing as expected everywhere. But now I'm like, oh, this feels like an underperformance based on those expectations to me. Do you think that at all or no? Yeah, it only got the one for makeup and hair.

It also could have hit score. It didn't make score either. I'm not really surprised that it missed VFX. It actually reminds me of when Everything Everywhere missed VFX because their VFX is kind of similar. And I feel like the branch doesn't like that type of more practical type of VFX. Yeah.

I think that's true. And then I feel like with Monstro Elisa Su, I think so much of it is about the prosthetics or at least like their campaign has really emphasized like the prosthetics and the hair and makeup. So I feel like maybe people also view the movie that way too. Like a lot of that is they think of it more as a hair and makeup thing than a visual effects feat. Yeah.

I think that's probably right. And I really, like you said, like VFX would have been like an overperformance. The one that stuck with me was sound. I just felt like it would have gotten in there. I know it's hard to argue. We'll go through all the categories. It's hard really to say where it would, who it would have knocked out.

But I did think it could be competitive there. I still haven't in for best picture. I don't think this is like going to change my viewpoint on it because I think overall the industry has really responded to it. And we haven't even seen what the actors think at this point or back to voters. But it would have been, I think if you were team substance, as we have many of those in the comments, Joyce, who are probably cracking their knuckles to say how much we hate this movie and how mean we are about it. Again, this is our new Austin Butler.

I just have no idea where our alleged hatred comes from. But if they're cracking their knuckles ready to send some comments, I would just say, like, it would have been great to have it in. I still have it in. I don't think it necessarily disqualifies anything, but it would have been nice to overperform here. Obviously, the hair and makeup one was, like, kind of locked in. If it would have missed that, that would have been really bad. I don't think it's bad that it missed sound and VFX, but it could have made it, you know? No, yeah, it could have made it. And I think with the momentum it's had from the early guilds from last week, you would...

assume that they would make it into more categories beyond hair and makeup. But I think it just kind of shows maybe that it's not...

as widely embraced as, you know, like Amelia Perez, right? Right. That like, it's not as widely embraced as it is on like the substance is not as widely embraced that is on the internet. Like it's liked, it has its fans, but it might still be divisive. So the other thing that happened this morning, early hours this morning is the ACTA international awards nominees, um,

which is like the Australian Oscars basically. So they, the nominees skew kind of Australian contenders. Like they, they nominated Toni Collette for juror number two and Nicole got in for a baby girl, a better man all over the place. And they totally snubbed the substance. So that that's also like, you know, like a data point to like, maybe it's not landing, but,

across the board as widely as you would hope it would based on the American guilds the past week. I think...

I was never going to predict it for like dozens of nominations, a dozen nominations, but I do think picture director screenplay and then two acting and the makeup that's six. If that would matter to me, that's a max out. That's the max out. And I'm like, what of those will fall off or what will it get? I think the hardest one right now, and we're waiting, we'll wait to see what SAG does, but like Margaret Qualley, I feel like would be the hardest one of those because she's not, she's been done really well, like in precursors, but she's still someone who I think,

Would get in on the strength of her movie more than her great performance. Demi, obviously, I think is a contender, but we've talked about best actress being so tough. And then the other categories, I think Coralie Farge could, now how do we say her name, Joyce? Farge. Farge. Coralie Farge, I think could get in.

And I think she's moved into top five in the odds. And I'm basing this solely on talking to Edward Berger at the Golden Globes. And he said how he just loved her. And I was like, he was going through Cuffin's. He wasn't at the Golden Globes. You know what I mean? After the nominations. Anyway, let's go through these lists here and we'll see. We'll, we'll comment on, you know, what we saw here. We're not going to do the shorts choice. Cause at least for me, I'm not going to speak for you. Like shorts dummies right now. Okay. You said it. I, I, I'm not, yeah, not up on my shorts choice. Uh,

I guess we could read. Do you want to read them for completeness or should I just skip through those? We can read them. All right. Documentary feature film. These are the shortlisted films. The BB Files, Black Box Diaries, Dahomey, Daughters, Eno, Frida, Hollywood Gate, No Other Land, Porcelain War, Queendom,

The Remarkable Life of Iblin, Soundtrack to Akutata, Sugarcane, Union, and Will and Harper. So one or two tremendous misses right at the top. The Christopher Reeve documentary, Superman, Joyce. Not an Oscar movie this year. No. And also not surprising because we've mentioned before...

Multiple times how this branch does not like celeb bio docs. And so Martha Stewart's movie, Martha also. That was less expected to make it, but Elton John's movie. Yeah. Not here. Will and Harper here. Yes. We also discussed how Will and Harper had an edge over these other titles because it was about, it's not like a bio doc on Will Ferrell. Correct. You know, it's about Harper steel and then their friendship and, and,

you know, their road trip and then just the learning about trans, the trans community and Will learning to understand, you know, his, his new relationship with Harper and,

Yes. And I don't know if you feel this way. I think that it made the shortlist is a great sign that it will probably be very competitive for nomination, I would say, because I think the hurdle maybe is to get on the shortlist for that kind of film. Like we saw like the other celeb, celeb adjacent and celeb bio docs did not make it so that this one made it through feels to me at least like, oh, they actually like this, this movie, and it has staying power with this group.

which is notoriously eyebrow. Yeah, I could see it missing the nominees, but it's good that it made it. It could have easily not made it as well. Right. And nothing else here really surprised me. I mean, Daughters, I expected to be here. Very excited to see it. Obviously, there's so many documentaries this year that I think people would probably be unhappy missed here, but this is a good list. No other land it seems likely to

make it through obviously yeah um i think a lot of it still has no distributor um here and i think a lot of people were worried that it would miss because it doesn't have a distributor but it made it so uh documentary short we'll do quickly because like we said i'll just read them off so if you you could google these i guess if you want we have not done these yet though but chasing rude death by numbers eternal father i am ready warden incident

Instruments of a Beating Heart, Keeper, Michaela's Voice, A Letter to the World, Once Upon a Time in Ukraine, The Only Girl in the Orchestra, Planet Walker, The Quilters, C31, Zoe Zephyri, A Swim Lesson, and Until He's Back. Now, a lot of times I like to look at the names. What's it going to be? It's a title. Yeah. Good title. None of these are standing out to me right now. I mean, I think there are some interesting titles here. Certainly interesting, but nothing like we've had in the past where it's just like...

Kind of wild titles. Maybe we'll see those in the shorts, the live action and animated international films choice for our Brazilian fans. I'm still here. Made the cut universal language from Canada waves from Czech Republic, the girl with the needle from Denmark, a movie I think could get in for cinematography choices. We talked about because it's black and white. Amelia Perez gets in for France, the seat of the sacred fig for Germany touch from Iceland kneecap from Ireland. I think you can watch that on Netflix right now. Is that very, very fun movie. Yeah.

Vermiglio in Italy, Flo from Latvia, the animated movie, which will show up later. Armand from Norway, from Ground Zero, from Palestine. Dahomey from Senegal. How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies. People were super psyched about that, making it from Thailand. And Santosh from the United Kingdom. Yeah. Um...

Cool that Palestine made it with from ground zero. And obviously, India did not submit the critics wins leader all we imagine as light. Correct. So that's not snubbed and not here. Not snubbed, just not just ineligible because it was not submitted. But that doesn't mean it will not get other nominations, which I think is eligible in other categories. Correct. So all right, makeup and hair choice.

These are the 10 films that advance. So five of these films will be Oscar nominated. The Apprentice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, A Different Man, Dune Part Two, Emilia Perez, Maria Nosferatu, The Substance, Waltzing with Brando, which is The Twist, and Wicked.

Double Sebastian Stan movies here. They both made it. Love to see it. I have a lot of these in my picks. So here's one. Waltzing with Brando is obviously the standout surprise. This is the Billy Zane as Marlon Brando doing Last Tango in Paris, I believe.

Looks just like him. I've not seen this movie. I don't know anybody who has, but I've seen the photos in the trailer, I guess. Everyone's seen the photos. Looks great. When a movie like that shows up on the shortlist and it's like, holy shit, how is that here? Does that make you think it actually could get nominated? I mean, especially if it's just branch voting. So it's just...

They're purers, you know, that it stood out enough to get not to get in here, I feel like is kind of interesting. I have. So I had the top I have the top five and our odds were substance wicked beetle just beetle juice a different man doing part two. So all of those films made it then Nosferatu Amelia Perez, no gladiator to no Saturday night.

Those seem like big misses, I guess I would say. And no Furiosa. Furiosa does MIA everywhere. Completely paid dust. Also Sasquatch Sunset missing, which felt like a potential novelty nomination. That could have been the Brando slot.

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see. I think... So right now, I have The Substance Wicked, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, A Different Man, and Amelia Perez. Based on how Amelia Perez has performed, it's now currently seventh in the odds. I just feel like that's going to keep moving up. I think it'll probably make it in, but...

We'll see if a different man and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice can hang on with wicked and the substance. I'm not totally sure of doing part two, making it in, but we'll see musical score choice, which we love, you know, we love a score.

Here are the eligible films on the shortlist. Alien Romulus, Baby Girl, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Blink Twice, Blitz, The Brutalist, Challengers, Conclave, Amelia Perez, The Fire Inside, Gladiator 2, Kevin Costner's Horizon and American Saga, Chapter One. Congratulations to that film. Inside Out 2, Nosferatu, The Room Next Door, Sing Sing, 6888, Wicked, The Wild Robot, and Young Woman and the Sea.

Nothing here for Saturday night, which is all score. So that is the biggest miss that I noticed too, right? That had fallen down in the odds. It was now fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth in the odds. It felt like that would have gotten in, but the movie just completely DOA. Yeah, and it...

Like that, that was basically its only shot as a nomination here, just like John Batiste, you know, industry fave. But yeah, it couldn't even make the short list. And also no room next door. No room next door is on there. Joyce. It is. Oh, is it? Yeah. Oh, no, wait. I'm looking at song.

Uh, yeah, Room Next Door made it. And everything else is right, right on the money. I guess I was, like we said, Wicked surprised me only because it's preexisting and who knows, but sure. Um, Blitz made it. Uh,

Gladiator 2 made it. All the real major contenders except for Saturday Night are here. Nothing for queer here, but the Reznor Ross buddies get in for challengers. I'll be curious to see. The top five in the odds right now are The Brutalist, Conclave, Wild Robot, One Wild Robot, Amelia Perez, and Challengers. That's what I have now. The room next door is sixth. I think you still have room next door as well. Yeah. I also have Wild Robot. I'm not...

sure about that with their seeming aversion to animated films scores. True. And also some competition in the animated field, obviously from inside out too, which is a great score. Really good. So I don't know. I'll be curious to see what makes it in six triple eight being here. I thought it was like a, that kind of like raise an antenna to me.

I love Baby Girl making it. I love that score. It's by Chris Paul, Tapia DeVere, who does the White Lotus, obviously. So it's very White Lotus coded. I can see that making it in. Yeah, honestly. And the Blink Twice score, I really like too. And I forget who did that. I'm going to Google this here quickly because it was quite good. No, no, I'm looking at the wrong thing.

Chanda Dancy score. That was really quite good. I thought that was a good one. Next up is original song, Joyce. Your favorite song from the movie Better Man, Forbidden Road, making the cut. Golden Globe nominee. Winter Coat from Blitz. Get Nicholas Bertel another nomination. Compress Repress from Challengers. Never Too Late from Elton John, Never Too Late. So an Elton John backing potential contention. El Malame Camino, like we said, Sicken the Head from Kneecap.

Beyond from Moana 2, Tell Me It's You from Mufasa, Piece by Piece from Piece by Piece, Like a Bird from Sing Sing, The Journey from 6888, Diane Warren, Out of Oklahoma from Twisters, Luke Holmes, Kiss the Sky from Wild Robot, and Harper and Will Go West from Will and Harper. Big snub here was Miley Cyrus' choice for The Last Showgirl, Beautiful That Way. Yeah. Yeah.

Golden Globe nominee. I had been moving up on that one hardcore because it's a great song. Andrew Wyatt obviously is a past winner and a nominee last year. He co-wrote the song with Miley and like Lee. And yeah, I was like, oh, this is Miley's time to shine. And now it's not. I'm going to guess that's a disability issue, I would say. What do you think? Yeah, I feel like, yeah, the movie is very small. Like it opened this past weekend and literally one theater opened.

And I also feel like we didn't even know there was a song in the movie from Miley Cyrus until like a month ago. Or at least like that, that was when I saw the movie. Right. I was like, oh, she has a song here. I actually made a mistake there, Joyce. Hard to believe that I, so diligent, such a great student in school would make a mistake. The Oklahoma song from Twisters is not the Luke Holmes song. This is the Lainey Wilson song out of Oklahoma, which plays when she's going back to her home.

I believe. I've only seen Twisters once. I've seen it three times. The Luke Holmes song is Ain't No Love in Oklahoma. We apologize for the error, but that's interesting that that is not the one that was predicted widely was the Ain't No Love in Oklahoma. Do you think they just mixed up their Oklahoma songs? Could be. No Joker here for Lady Gaga, Joyce. I think some people were still hanging their hat on that one. Sure. Sure.

Other ones I thought would have loved to see here that I didn't expect to see here, but would have been nice. Anything from the movie Trap, where M. Night Shyamalan has his daughter being a pop star and she's amazing and the songs roll. Let me see. Anything else here that really stood out? No, not really. There were some, obviously, other Moana songs could have made it. There are some other songs, but the Miley and Lady Gaga ones, I think, were the big misses. Yeah. So...

You've already gone to double Amelia here. I have. And now I got to drop Lion King too, because it's the wrong song. The wrong song. So I don't know what I'm going to do. I might go to Forbidden Road. I'm just doing that. Copy you. Do a better man. I mean, I don't have better man at the Oscars yet. I had it at the Globe.

I am putting my, I'm putting Amelia. I honestly, I'm at this point with Amelia Perez Joyce, much to the problem. Anywhere I think it could get in. I think it could get in and I think it probably will get in. And I'm now I'm wondering in terms of like Selena Gomez, how far that would go. Well, I don't know who to drop. Cause I think Margaret Qualley could get in. I think Felicity Jones is vulnerable. I really think the only two who are not or three really, cause I think Isabella Rossellini, like we've talked about is pretty vulnerable.

Safe too, even though... She tied at a Critics' Group yesterday with Ariana, which is just fantastic. But Ariana, Zoe, and...

I think are safe. So that leads me to believe that like, I don't know, I just think the Academy is obviously gonna like Amelia Perez is going to be like a Joker level, like 11 nominations, you know, like in a way, like a safe route is to blanket your predictions with Amelia everywhere and just take the L with whatever it misses, because it probably won't be more effective.

Like it won't be like more than half of what you predict, you know? Like I've even got it now in like screenplay, you know, I'm just like, I'm just going all the way. I think this is just going everywhere. And anyway, the interesting thing is like, they're not the top of winners, obviously, but it's like, I, it feels like I get all these nominations, but not actually went a lot. Yeah. We will obviously talk about this more and we don't need to bring it up, but to bring it up choice, is it, is it a lot to actually win international feature?

I don't necessarily think so, but I think it feels that way, certainly. Isn't that funny, though? It could get like 10 or 11 nominations, including international feature and not necessarily a lock, especially if it's up against like Steven Seger. Animated short, like we said, not really knowledgeable about these, but just to read them. Some great titles here, Joyce. Au revoir, mon mode, monet...

A bear named Wojtek, beautiful men, bottled George, a crab in the pool, in the shadow of the cypress, magic candies, maybe elephants, me, origami, Persebus, the 21, wander to wonder, and the wild-tempered Clavier, and yuck with an exclamation point. So I'm already pulling for that one. That's a good title. People will want to check that out. And then live action short choice, some of these. Oh.

Anyuja, Clouda, these are both wrong. The Commandriant Crust, Dovecoat, Edge of Space, The Ice Cream Man, I'm Not a Robot, The Last Ranger, Aileen, The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent, The Masterpiece, An Orange from Jaffa, Paris 70, and Room Taken. A lot of good titles there too. I would say The Me from Animated, not great SEO.

No, not a lot. No, that one's tough. And Aline, I think is also a tough one. Yeah. All right. Sam Joyce, 10 films advancing, five will be nominated for an Oscar. These are the shortlisted films. Alien Romulus again, Blitz, A Complete Unknown, Deadpool and Wolverine, Dune Part Two, Amelia Perez, Gladiator Two, Joker, Follet Ado, Wicked, and The Wild Robot. Love The Wild Robot making it. Yeah.

I think I had all the top five and the odds are Dune Part Two, Wicked, Gladiator Two, Amelia Perez, and A Complete Unknown. So all of those films are here. So nothing snubbed really. No, I mean, we already talked about like the substance. No show here. No show for substance. Blitz is next, which showed up. Twisters and The Brutalist, which took a lot of L's here, I guess. They're not really because I don't know what categories it would have made it in, but people had it at least in the top 10 for sound.

Also Conclave was in the top 10 for sound. You had it in sound. I had it in for sound for a while. I did take it out recently, but it's not getting in because it wasn't shortlisted and the substance. So out of the top six, out of the top 10, only six of the top 10 in the Oscar odds made it in here. One's going to get left out. I have Blitz getting left out right now, but we'll see. Civil War also didn't make this cut, but it was in the top there. What else?

you know, no Furiosa did not, not for a two that I mentioned that. No, no, no. So that one, I felt like would have made it in, especially because not for a two did well in a little other categories, right? Like makeup and score, I guess. I don't know.

Yeah, but... Different branches, obviously. But I'm like, oh. I don't know. I feel like when I think of Nosferatu, I think of Bill's voice. Me too, but I guess that doesn't matter, right? Like, yeah. I don't think of, like, the audio sound as stupid as that sounds. And I guess for me, I guess the surprise here, the waltzing with Brando of this category is perhaps Jokerfolia do because it flopped everywhere else, but it had great sound and it's a musical. Listen...

aspects of the movie can be good without the whole movie working. I think Joker, watch Joker get in for cinematography too, because of a past victory there or a nomination there at least. For visual effects, Joyce, 10 movies in the running, five will make it.

This is the last shortlist category we'll do. Alien Romulus, Better Man, Civil War, Deadpool and Wolverine, Dune Part 2, Gladiator 2, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Mufasa, The Lion King, and Wicked. You just skipped Twisters? No, I thought I said Twisters, but Twisters is there as well. Furiosa was the big miss here. Here, Robert Zemeckis' Here was a big miss here, based on the odds. I think it was 10th. 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Yes, 10th.

No Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice either here was a popular or relatively speaking popular pick. I've got my eye on Civil War getting in, but I don't know who to knock out for it to get in. That was my big takeaway from this. I mean, they love monkeys here. So will Better Man and Kingdom of Planet of the Apes get in? Maybe. I don't know. And if they both get in, like right now the top five in the odds are Dune, Kingdom of Planet of the Apes, Wicked, Gladiator 2, and Twisters with Mufasa in sixth.

I don't have twisters in. I did have Mufasa in, but I could see Better Man getting into. We'll see. And those are the shortlist choice. Wow. Congratulations to us. We did it. So what is your big, this year, I feel like, like I said, like years past, maybe more, I don't know, more reaction, more reactionary takes maybe to be had. Not as much this year to me.

No, because even like the snubs, like I personally feel like, oh, like it was a miss, but I don't think it was entirely shocking. You know, like even though the substance missed so many categories, but I feel like that just kind of shows like it's not as beloved as you might want it to be. It just shows like, you know, this is like it could be a speed bump.

Yeah, I think, well, like we said, also has a cap, obviously, on its nominations potential. That's not a problem, but I mean, like it's a reality. And now it is in further reality based on these. I think it's still competitive, obviously, for non-shortlisted categories like costumes, where one was mentioned by the guild there, right? You know, it could make it in there. But I guess we'll see. Editing too, I think, is a possibility. But who knows? Yeah, and then, you know, Tough Day, if you're an Amelia Perez hater. Yeah.

So I guess the other thing I would say tough day, if you were hoping, like, I think at least for like Furiosa, one of my favorite movies of the year. And I was like, Oh, it'd be cool if it showed up here as like a renewed thing, but it really felt like alien Romulus got the Furiosa bump that Furiosa was hoping for. Maybe, you know what I mean? Like it would have been cool if Furiosa was here like three times. Yeah. I think maybe if you were emboldened by Furiosa making Ace last week, um,

You know, that probably deflated today, or it should have deflated today. But I think it just goes to show that the Ace nominees, they were just very heavy on early releases because their calendar changed this year and they voted so early. So a lot of the later releases didn't make the cut there. But Furiosa did with them, so...

All right, Joyce. So that's it for us today. So you can email us at slugfest at goldrubber.com. Talk all about these things. We'll be back later this week, Joyce. I'm going to tease this. An interview. Wow. With a great interview coming up later this week. I wonder who it is. It might be someone who is in some of these movies that were shortlisted. Hmm. Okay. That's all I'm going to say. So we'll talk to you then. All right. Bye.
