Lori's Story Lesson 41. Do you hate this too? In this lesson, we're going to learn how to say that you dislike or hate something. そうですね。 For example, 虫が嫌いです。 I hate insects. We're going pretty negative on this episode, huh? そうですね。 This conversation takes place where? 大学 On campus. The conversation is between 水木さん and Lori-san. Mr. Mizuki and Lori. And they'll be speaking in
Formal Japanese. Okay, let's listen.
Wow, snowboarding, huh? That sounds great. ぼくもスキーが大好きです。 I love to ski myself. あ、でもまだ雪がありますか? Oh, but do you think there's still snow on the mountains? さあ、I don't know. 代わりに今度ラフティングに行きませんか? Why don't we go rafting instead? 私は水が嫌いです。 I don't like the water.
昔、溺れました。 I almost drowned once. でも、ライフジャケットありますよ。 But we'd have life jackets. 無理です。 Sorry, not going to happen. じゃあ、山は? Okay, then what about the mountains? キャンプをしませんか? Why don't we go camping? 私は虫が大嫌いです。無理です。 Not likely. I hate bugs.
Wow, Naomi-sensei. はい? Hey, Lori didn't really strike me as the picky type. ああ、そうですね。 You know what I mean? She hates water and insects. It seems like she was fine with snowboarding though, right? そうですね。 So I guess she likes snow. By the way, when's the snowboarding season here in Japan? It really depends on the area, but I think it starts from December and ends in March,かな? 12 月から 3 月ですね。
From December to March. So you think it'll be too late to go in April? It depends on the climate of that year. But some slopes are open until early May. 五月まで大丈夫ですかね。 But you can't expect powder snow in April or May though. ダメですね。パウダースノーはないですね。 On to the vocabulary. 次は単語です。 The first word is? ラフティング。 Rafting.
The next word is... Dislikable. To dislike. To hate. The next word is... To drown. To almost drown. The next word is... Life jacket.
ライフジャケット The next word is? キャンプ Camping キャンプ The last word is? スキー Skiing スキー A bunch of katakana words today, right? はい、そうですね。 In the dialogue, we heard four words that sound a lot like English, Naomi-sensei. そうですね。 The first one is スキー
Which means to ski or skiing. Rafting. Camping. And life jacket. Life jacket. You know, another word in the vocabulary was to hate, right? そうですね。 To dislike something a lot. 嫌い。
To hate, to dislike. The pronunciation is a bit tricky because we have a similar word, which is きれい. Wow, that's almost like きらい. そうですね。 きれい is beautiful.
So let's get this clear. To hate is... 嫌い with an ah sound, right? And beautiful is... 綺麗 You know what I just noticed? The intonation is also different. そうですね。 嫌い To dislike. It starts low and goes up. 綺麗 Beautiful. It starts high and goes low. そうですね。
So really, be careful with these two words. You don't want to end up telling your boyfriend or girlfriend how much you hate their eyes. You don't want to be explaining that. I'm serious. So on to the grammar. The focus of this lesson is expressing dislike.
私は水が嫌いです。 I hate water. The phrase が嫌いです can be used to talk about things that you don't like. And to talk about things that you do like, you can use が好きです。 which was covered in the previous lesson. Right. 私はスキーが好きです。 I like skiing. To express dislike, the thing you dislike is marked with the subject marking particle が followed by 嫌いです。
In the dialogue, Lori said, 私は水が嫌いです。 I hate water. I dislike water. And as we've mentioned before, you can drop the subject 私は and say 水が嫌いです。 So if you dislike camping, キャンプが嫌いです。 If you hate bugs, 虫が嫌いです。 エリックさん、何が嫌いですか? What do you dislike or what do you hate? そうですね。
朝のラッシュが嫌いです。 Morning rush. I hate the morning rush. It's misery on that train. Nobody likes 朝のラッシュね。 But Naomi-sensei, 何が好きですか?
チョコレートが好きです。 You've been saying that for a couple of episodes now. You want me to bring a piece of chocolate in, don't you? そうね。 Alright, next time, next time. By the way, 何が嫌いですか? 水が嫌いです。 I'm just like Nori. 昔、溺れました。 You almost drowned? はい。 本当です。 そう、昔、溺れました。 So that does it for today. 皆さんは何が嫌いですか?
