She felt that only a documentary could capture their real-life stories and the essence of their lives, leading her to abandon her original art project idea.
Kobe faced significant challenges, including racial discrimination and limited opportunities outside Chinatown. She was pressured to wear more revealing outfits to earn higher pay, which conflicted with her desire to be a tap dancer. Additionally, she dealt with uncomfortable encounters with drunk patrons in nightclubs, which she managed by using her talent as a costume designer to maintain her dignity.
The Forbidden City Night Club provided a rare platform for Chinese-American performers to showcase their talents during a time of racial segregation. It allowed performers like Kobe to gain recognition and challenge stereotypes, as audiences were surprised to see Chinese dancers who could outperform their white counterparts. However, the club also reflected the era's racial limitations, with performers often being labeled with Western nicknames rather than being recognized by their own names.
The dance troupe's performances allowed elderly members to reclaim a lost cultural heritage and express themselves freely. For many, it was a chance to fulfill lifelong dreams of dancing, which had been suppressed due to cultural or familial restrictions earlier in life.
