A Chinese publisher has sparked controversy for dividing a new middle-school math textbook into two editions based on gender. East China Normal University Press claims this idea was inspired by a popular storybook that has a boys' edition and a girls' edition. According to a scholar who has participated in the writing of this textbook, there are clear gender differences in the study of math. However, criticism has popped up that the textbook is reinforcing a stereotype that boys are better at math than girls.
