Two passionate leaders in oncology and women’s health, Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu and Dr. Nermean Mostafa, share the challenges they face when it comes to educating many African women about cancer screening and prevention. Besides the stigma, there is often a cultural belief that illness is rooted in the supernatural. So women will visit a traditional healer rather than seeking medical care if they get sick. The strategies and tactics to promote awareness and prevention, they say, includes “educating our girls so they grow into informed, empowered women.”
