Today's story is a rather stormy one. In fact, tempest is another word for storm.
In this story, there's betrayal, love, hate and a little bit of magic too. And it all happens on a deserted island. We begin in the eye of the storm. The king of Naples is on his way back from a wedding with his son and some of his followers. The ship is thrown from side to side in the violent waves and its passengers are thrown into the sea.
From a nearby island, a magical man named Prospero and his daughter Miranda watch the storm. Miranda is worried for the ship's passengers, but Prospero reassures her and tells her about their secret past. You see, it turns out that Prospero was once the Duke of Milan and a friend of the king, but Prospero's brother overthrew him.
and Prospero fled with his daughter to the island. The island is a bleak, rocky place to live, but any port in a storm. Father and daughter have made a life here, where the only other living thing is a strange creature called Caliban, who hates Prospero and storms about the island having wicked thoughts. And there's another secret that even Miranda doesn't know.
Prospero has conjured the storm with the help of a spirit called Ariel. He plans to lure the king and those who betrayed him to the island and create a perfect storm of revenge. With the waters now calm, we now meet the ship's passengers who are scattered around the island, not knowing who has survived.
First, the king and some of his followers, including Prospero's treacherous brother Antonio. The king wanders stormily around the island. He believes his son, Prince Ferdinand, has died in the shipwreck. But Gonzales, one of his noble followers, convinces him to keep looking. In another part of the island, Ferdinand, alive and well, meets Miranda and immediately falls in love with her.
Prospero, unsure about the couple, decides to test Ferdinand's love. Antonio and another treacherous character, Sebastian, plot to kill the king. But just as they are about to storm him, Ariel, the spirit, intervenes. The king decides to keep looking for his son, though he is losing hope. We meet some more characters who have been marooned on the island.
Trinculo and Stefano, who are servants of the king and are a little bit silly. They stumble upon Caliban, who thinks they might be able to help him overthrow Prospero. Caliban convinces them to kill Prospero and take the island by storm. Luckily, Ariel knows about their plans and warns Prospero.
They set a trap for the three attackers by distracting them with strange clothes and chasing them away with spirits in the shape of dogs. Prospero decides it is time to reunite the shipwrecked passengers. He reveals his true identity to the king and, instead of getting revenge, decides to forgive his brother and all those who have betrayed him. He also announces that Miranda and Ferdinand are engaged.
The king makes Prospero Duke of Milan once more. The servants and Caliban are punished for their violent plot and sailors confirm the ship is safe to travel. The story ends as everyone sets off to celebrate and dance up a storm. Well, that story was quite dramatic, certainly more than a storm in a teacup. Join me again next week for another classic story. Bye for now.
