From the Braids Behind Braids On, this is the moment of um. Um.

Answer those questions that make you go... Bubble to Bob comes to you from APM Studios. I'm Cece the Dog. Back again. How was your weekend? Mine was fine. Woof! Um...

Alright, alright, alright. So I know I'm a good dog. I'm nice to the baby, I only go potty outside, I don't shed too much, and I only bark if there's someone on the porch because I love my family and I want to protect them, okay? But sometimes I mess up. I can't help it. I'm only human. I mean, dog. I'm only dog.

There's one thing I know that I can never do though, and that's eat chocolate. My owners explained to me that it's not just because it's human food and I'm not supposed to eat human food, but they seemed really, really serious when they told me it's not safe for me. Why is that? Hello, my name is Eliza from Denver, Colorado, and my question is, why is chocolate poisonous to dogs?

My name is Cassie Panning. I'm a certified veterinary technician here at the University of Minnesota, and I work primarily in the nutrition service. We do nutrition appointments for dogs, so we help with things like dietary recommendations for new puppies or large breed growing dogs. We also do a lot of obesity cases to help pets lose weight in a healthy manner, as well as

making specific dietary recommendations if they have certain medical conditions that require a special or tailored to their individual needs diet. Dogs can't eat chocolate in the same way humans can because humans have a specific enzyme that helps break down the theobromine, which is a component of the chocolate that in dogs, because they have a lot less of that enzyme, can build to toxic levels for the dogs when they eat the chocolate, unlike in humans.

Same as if you or I went ahead and ate the whole bag of our Halloween candy. We might not have life-threatening symptoms, but we're probably going to have an upset stomach. So some stomach pain, we might get a little bit of vomiting or diarrhea. Same with our dogs. When they ingest the products, especially in larger quantities,

we absolutely can see it cause that upset stomach first. And then as their levels build and they get more and more of those toxic components, we end up seeing the things like their heart starts racing or their blood pressure goes way up, which can again lead to more life-threatening symptoms if left untreated. Um, uh,

Not like I want to tell you more things I can't eat, but since we're on the topic, I feel like it's my dogly duty to tell you that grapes and raisins are also on the no-no list for us pups. Ingesting even a little bit could lead to kidney failure. Oh, no! ♪

If you want to be extra, extra safe, just stick to the official dog food, okay? Even though human food is so good. Hot dogs. Pizza. Cupcake. No, no, no. Be good, Cece. Dog food only. Woof!
