Good relationships are crucial in leadership because people won’t go along with you unless they get along with you. Your success is largely determined by your ability to connect with others, add value to them, and build positive relationships.
Leaders should be intentional about adding value to others because it requires a shift from a naturally selfish mindset to a giving one. Intentionally adding value helps build positive relationships and makes others feel valued, which is essential for success.
Equipping others is important because your people can only grow to the level that you grow. By developing yourself and then training others, you compound your success, influence, and financial gains. Equipping others also helps them reach their full potential and contribute more effectively to the organization.
The five steps are: 1) I do it, 2) I do it and you are with me, 3) You do it and I am with you, 4) You do it, 5) You do it and someone is with you. These steps ensure that the person being equipped learns through observation, practice, and eventually becomes a leader who can equip others.
Leaders must sometimes choose leading over being loved because the higher the responsibility, the more difficult decisions they will face. Effective leadership sometimes requires making tough, unpopular decisions for the greater good of the organization or team.
Leaders should identify the root cause of why they don't get along with someone. If it's a values mismatch, they should consider distancing themselves. If it's a stylistic difference, they should embrace diversity and work on understanding the other person’s perspective. Resolving these issues can lead to better relationships and outcomes.
Empowerment can be challenging because leaders often want to stay involved and may feel the need to show how excited they are about their team's success. However, this can sometimes diminish the perceived empowerment of the team members. Effective empowerment involves giving complete responsibility and allowing team members to feel the weight and celebrate the results on their own.
