Japan has a long history of making the most of the seas surrounding its many islands. Attention is now turning to so-called blue carbon, an expression that encapsulates the role of oceans and marine life in sequestering carbon dioxide. A variety of initiatives are underway with the goal of revitalizing ocean habitats and local economies while allowing sponsors to offset carbon emissions by providing financial support through blue-carbon trading schemes.
