Welcome to the Ancient Health Podcast, where East meets West in the world of medicine. I'm Dr. Chris Motley, and here we explore how modern Western science and traditional Eastern wisdom come together to unlock the body's full healing potential. Each week, we'll dive into powerful tools, techniques, and approaches from both sides of the world to help you optimize your health and live with vitality. Let's bridge the gap between ancient practices and cutting-edge medicine. Let's get started.

Hello friends, welcome to the Ancient Health Podcast. I'm your host, Dr. Chris Motley, and we're going to talk about the liver, liver problems, and its relationship to hair loss. Congested, dirty liver can lead to hair thinning and hair loss. Specifically, when we're talking about the liver, there is a hair loss pattern in Chinese medicine that's related to the liver.

So you can have hair loss at the very top of the head, the vertex, which is normally associated with bladder or kidney infections like UTIs or kidney or bladder stones. If you have spotty loss of hair around the cranium, thinning hair and patches that's often associated with lymph conditions like swollen lymph nodes and spleen problems such as mono.

When we talk about the liver, we're talking about thinning and loss of hair in a pattern that's at the sides or the corners of the top of the head. I hope that makes sense if you're driving or listening to this.

You know where they have the receding hairlines that starts on some individuals. It is basically where the sides of the head meet the top of the head. That area of your cranium that's wrapping around almost where the crown, the king or the queen's crown sits. That area, if it starts to thin,

and the hair loss starts to grow inwards towards the top and middle of the head that is associated with liver problems or liver toxicity. So many times in my clinic I will see this liver pattern of hair loss associated with a body type known as a liver body type. And this is where individuals are not necessarily heavy set.

where there's weight all over the frame, but usually there is weight around the stomach, a hardened stomach, because fats, adipose tissue, has been hardening around the liver and eventually throughout the abdominal area. So you will see individuals that may have more of a stomach that is proceeding out or pooching out, and there's hardened fat in that area. Sometimes it's a little loose, maybe a little soft, but it's very pronounced.

And these individuals will have that hair loss where it is around the corners of the head. And so when I see this, I know that the liver has been stressed and has been toxic. And it is leading to metabolic processes up in the cranium, causing the hair roots and the areas around the arterial blood flow of the scalp to diminish.

So let's look at this and look and see if there's anything going on in the liver and if there's stuff that we can do to help cleanse the liver to prevent any more hair from falling out and to talk about if there's any possibility for new hair growth in these areas if you heal the liver.

And we'll go over some of the therapies that are now showing promise on the scalp and on the liver to help things regrow. I will go over just a few herbals that help the liver to help it cleanse, such as schisandra. Schisandra has been used in Chinese medicine to clean out the liver.

Also, I love Bodyguard Supreme. If you write that down, Bodyguard Supreme, it is basically stone breaker to clean stones out of the liver. Also, NAC slash or glutathione, which is a natural antioxidant. And some of my favorites are Quality Milk Thistle or Dandelion Root.

These are some simple herbals that have been shown to help cleanse out the liver in a safe, gentle way. So for all of us out here that are listening and know that we've had liver issues, I basically sympathize with you. I want us to stay on track, but I want you to know that individuals out there that have had problems with AST, ALT levels, liver enzyme issues...

or methylation, liver methylation markers such as MTHFR or MTRR or MTFHD, different types of markers within the body that would indicate that the liver is working harder than it needs to. So one of the mechanisms that you'll see is that the liver can get congested

With toxicities because genetically you may not have the ability to actually flush the toxins out. So for the individual that has a stomach that is pooching out or more weight around the belt line, but not anywhere else in the body, that is liver congestion. So you could have genes that I just mentioned not working properly that would allow your body to actually detoxify to keep the weight off.

Also, when we're talking about weight in the liver, remember, we're not just talking about cirrhosis or liver failure, but we're also relating it to the infections that have been known to get into the liver that could be associated with these very harsh liver problems, such as viral infections, hepatitis, even bacterial infections known as C. diff infections.

H. pylori, salmonella, E. coli, strep, Lyme's disease, parasites, chronic candida and fungus, yeast. These all can make their way into the liver, congealing the blood, making it very, very thick. The blood is having a hard time being thinned out and cleaned out by the liver because it's so overburdened and bombarded.

that your body then stores up toxins in the liver. The body will then build up fat cells around the liver throughout the gut to then push all the excess toxins and excess sugars. So when we see that east meets west, I want you to know that toxins can be placed into adipose tissue, which is fat cells.

But if you ever found yourself with liver enzyme issues, liver problems, but also having diabetes, prediabetes, insulin resistance, your body could have all these infections and toxins within the liver. Remember, and the MTHFR or the genetics of the body can't remove them. You start to have excess sugars in the blood.

And that excess sugar goes into the liver as glycogen and the liver then gets filled up with too much sugars. And then it starts putting excess sugars into triglycerides, into fat cells. So you have two things going on. You could have excess sugars leading to an acidic state, leading to excess fungal and yeast overgrowth.

Microbe overgrowth in the liver. The liver is bombarded again, getting sick. It's starting to try to push toxins into fat cells to try to keep the function of the liver going.

And then you could have excess sugars because you're in fight or flight. You want extra sugars and you're like, man, I have all these toxins. I have all these infections. You may not even know you do. You don't even know you have MTHFR, but you're craving sugars because your body's in fight or flight. I need to run from a problem. I need to fight it. But at the same time, you're bombarding with high sugar levels and it's feeding the fungus and the yeast.

Not all fungus and yeast is bad. In fact, some of it's very good. It is there as a cleanup crew.

But we live in such a society and a culture where we're all in fight or flight. And you out there are shaking your head and goes, that's me. I know I've got some digestive issues in my upper digestion. I know I feel like I'm putting weight around the waist. I crave extra sugar because I'm too stressed and I'm trying to alleviate that stress because the sugars give me a dopamine rush. But I need the energy to keep going, to finish my function, to finish my

my daily activities, that in turn starts to feed the yeast. I start to notice that I'm having a little bit more body odors. I'm having some sweats at night. My feet are starting to stink. I'm getting more dandruff and all these things start to build up and you start to get angrier. You start to get angry. You get short tempered. You get a little snippy with your family, with your spouse, with your loved one, your partner, and you're getting a little angry at individuals. You're like, this is not me. Why am I so angry?

And you look in the mirror and you start to see, heavens, I think I'm losing a little bit of hair. I'm thinning. My hair's thinner. My hair is falling out around a pattern, around the crown of the – like the sides of the head where the crown would sit. So then we just sort of blame, well, let's just stress. But when it comes to men and women, some of us are pretty adamant. We don't want to lose our hair. So you start seeing these signs and signals and these patterns.

And you can tell that the liver is overwhelmed. Can that overwhelming sensation in the body articulate into that type of hair loss? Yes. And when we talk about the pattern, I want you guys to know this. Why that any hair pattern can be associated with the meridian, the acupuncture meridian of the organ that is sick or injured. Now,

I want us to remember that the liver and the gallbladder are two organs that basically are in the same vicinity. The liver sits under the right rib cage and the gallbladder is a small organ.

organ that basically is receiving all the liquid bile that the liver is making. So the liver is making the liquid bile. It is dumping it from the bile ducts in the liver. Okay. And it's making its way down into the gallbladder. So they are paired organs. They are connected in Chinese medicine. They make up green color. Bile is green. Liver is green. And

The green color represents growth. Can the liver grow very quickly? It can grow quickly. It can reproduce itself in half the time than other organs can. So they are part of the green color, the wood element, the liver and the gallbladder. So you see that there is toxicity in the liver, but it's also connected to the gallbladder. And this will make sense.

In Chinese medicine, the liver meridian runs up the inside or basically where the big toe is at between the big toe and the second toe, right up the webbing. That's where the liver meridian starts, right at the end of the big toe. Not the inside of the big toe, but the outside of the big toe. That's the liver one. That's why you'll see people with gout. Gout's associated with the liver.

Sugar problems. If you guys catch my drift, you start seeing these patterns. That liver meridian comes up the foot, the inside of the ankle, up the inside of the leg, all the way up to the chest on both sides. And it goes right underneath the nipple line, right on the rib cage on both sides. That's the liver meridian. Now, the cool thing is, is that it's connected electrically to the gallbladder meridian. So whatever happens to the liver meridian,

happens to the gallbladder. Whatever happens to the gallbladder happens to the liver, vice versa. The gallbladder meridian starts at the corner of the eye. So if you guys are listening, it's at the corner of the eye on both sides. That's gallbladder one. And then it has an electrical pathway that jumps over to the TMJ. So you can have tight TMJ and locked jaw and clicking jaws. That's a gallbladder issue more than likely. That meridian of the gallbladder wraps around the ear, down behind the earlobe,

Jumps back up to the top of the forehead right where you had the receding hairline and it shoots back along the cranium. So it's almost like you have a reverse horn. So it jumps up, goes right back down the cranium, down the neck on both sides, down the sides of the body. But this is a kicker. Remember the gallbladder rooting comes up and it wraps around basically the

the top sides of the head, right where that hair loss pattern for the liver is. So if you look at where basically the areas of receding hairline is, that usually follows gallbladder meridian and sometimes stomach meridian, but more than likely gallbladder. So you have this. The gallbladder is the organ that receives the bile. If you've ever had your gallbladder taken out, if you've ever had gallstones, gall sludge,

The gallbladder is a receptacle. It is receiving bile from the liver. Now, if the gallbladder receives toxic bile from the liver, if it doesn't get hydrated enough, if it doesn't receive enough bile salts from the liver, if you don't have enough good water in the system, if you don't have enough good fats, if you have too much preservatives in your life, that gallbladder will get stiff and

And it will get very tough. It will get hardened and stones will form in the gallbladder. You'll get sludge and stones. Okay? Now, the liver is dumping all this toxic bile because the liver is overwhelmed. It's doing its best. What does bile do? Bile combines toxins such as heavy metals, excess caffeine, excess medications,

Excess pharmaceutical drugs, excess birth control, excess estrogens, excess hormones. Your liver all day is combining that and putting it into the bile.

The bile then is combining it with bile salts and you'll make a bile acid. Now, what this important thing is, is that it dumps it on the gallbladder. But there's a component of that bile that then is pushed into the stomach when you eat fats so that the bile can also help you emulsify and digest fats. So you eat your almonds, your avocados, anything with good fats in it, your body will dissolve.

Eventually, the bile is traveling down into the intestines. Some of it is reabsorbed and reused. Some of it's combined with fiber and pooped out. But let's say you had a toxic gallbladder.

Oh, my mother and my father did. Your family line does. And you know that you've had some liver issues that will inflame the gallbladder. Does that make sense? Inflammation the gallbladder. So your body will take all the chi, all the electricity and try to nurture that gallbladder as much as it can to help it heal because there's too much toxins in the liver.

So the gallbladder is sitting there going, hey, I'm going to help receive all this bile so I can help you do all these functions, get rid of toxins and dissolve fats. But then all of a sudden the gallbladder goes, there is too much toxicity in this bile. And the liver is like, I'm sorry, buddy. That's all I got. I got to give you what I can, but I'm trying. There's too much toxins. There's too much infections. There's too much sugars.

So then the gallbladder goes, okay, I'm going to need some help from the chi. I'm going to have to rob other organs and get some of this chi in my body and the gallbladder. And the gallbladder meridian will get more electrified. It will actually get more electricity, more heat in there trying to help heal the gallbladder. It's going to start robbing energy from other places. So the meridian gets hot. So everything along the path of the meridian, the gallbladder meridian,

starts to get hot, backed up, inflamed, that meridian will become stagnant in the Chinese medicine world. Stagnant Qi. Just because the gallbladder is trying to heal up. So you'll see basically people having eye problems, can't see very well. They'll have TMJ issues. They'll have tinnitus, hearing issues, because the gallbladder meridian runs around the head.

And furthermore, it wraps back up over the head. Remember, back up to the forehead. And that area is where the inflammation happens around the hairline. That whole meridian is traveling down the back of the head now. And that's where you get the hair loss. It's an inflamed cranium. Now, I'm not trying to be rude. I stepped off the camera for just a second. But I want to show you guys, if you're watching this, jump on the video of the YouTube video. But you'll see.

It's right here at the corner of the eye, gallbladder one, it goes down to the TNJ, wraps around the back of the ear to around the earlobe, jumps back up to the front of the forehead, right here where you had that hair loss, and then it travels back down the cranium, all the way back down to the side of the neck, to the front of the shoulder, down the sides of the body, down to the side of the hip, through the side of the knee, to the ankle. So individuals will have hair loss, have the liver stomach, the liver body type,

Toxic liver levels. And they'll also have what? Sore shoulder joints. Sore rotator cuffs. Sore hip pointers. Knees that click all the time. And ankles that pop. All this from a toxic liver and a toxic gallbladder. Yes. When your body gives you hair loss or thinning hair, it is showing you that the liver and gallbladder have been going through a lot to help balance your body.

Yes, genetically you could have MTHFR. You could have problems with your gene pool that allows you to detoxify things such as the CYP gene. And you can get – you can go to MaxGen. MaxGenetics is a great company. They will show you that there are certain genes that help you with liver function. And you need certain vitamins and minerals to keep your body healthy to be able to run those genes. And that's true.

But in our day and age, we're close to so much EMF fields, toxic air, toxic water, overuse of antibiotics, high sugar intake from the high fructose corn syrup and all the refined sugar that you can think of, the high amounts of pesticides and GMOs. And those things are in our liver and our liver are, our livers are trying to heal and it can't. So when you start to see hair loss,

It's so much deeper than just hair loss. Can you help the liver cleanse to help hair regrow? I've seen some individuals that have had hair regrow. Yes. I've seen some that it did not regrow. But on the majority, I've seen individuals keep the hair they have. And I've seen new sprouts of hair on individuals when they clean their liver, which then turn on their MTHFR genes. In fact, they did MTHFR.

The genetic testing from MaxGen, they learned some of these supplements to help their genes function properly. Their liver started to detoxify and cleanse, and they started to see hair being able to be stabilized. Why? In the Chinese medicine world, I'm giving you this perspective, that gallbladder meridian is calming down. Once you clean the liver out of toxicities and you start to flush the bile and get the

you will give the gallbladder clean bile and that will take out the inflammation from the gallbladder meridian. The gallbladder meridian, remember, that goes from the eye to the TMJ, around the ear and around the head, it will get out of inflammation. It will de-inflame. It will allow electricity to flow properly through those areas and the high inflammation starts to fade. The hair roots, the circulation around the cranium starts to return to normal.

you start to see that there's not an overworking of that meridian around the top corners of the head. So the hair follicles regain stabilization. They get proper neurological and electrical feed into those areas and blood flow can actually get normalized. And if you start to work at cleaning out the liver, you know what you're doing? You are helping the liver with all the benefits of MTHFR and

and all the benefits it gives. What does the liver do? The liver helps with the production. It helps with the manufacturing and the synthesis of cysteine. It helps with the stabilization of sulfurs in the body. It helps with the production and stabilization of certain types of ligament tissue, like soft tissue and glucosamine and polyphenols.

tendon parts, ligament parts, all the parts that are needed for tendons and ligaments. Think the components for your hair, all the proteins that are synthesized for these things in your body are made where? In your liver.

So if you get rid of all the infections and toxins in your liver, you'll actually give your body the nutrients and things it needs to help with giving you great skin, hair and nails. That's cysteine and sulfur stabilization. You're going to give your liver the ability to process the proteins and amino acids properly. That's what it does. And cholesterols. So your liver, your skin and your nails and your I mean, your hair, your skin and nails are going to show the most benefit just from taking care of the liver.

It's one of your best, biggest filters. So that's my explanation. You want to help the liver clean out. So you're going to say, Doc, I know that sounds great, but I'm listening here and I'm thinking, what could I do to start the process? I do not want to make it too complicated. I start off by checking a few simple things. I always check schisandra.

S-C-H-I-S-A-N-D-R-A, schisandra berry or schisandra supreme from Supreme Nutrition Products. And that is one of my go-tos because it is a natural antioxidant producer known as glutathione. And glutathione will help clean the liver. I use schisandra. I check with it, see if it works well, ask your primary care doctor, ask your health physician if this is for you. That's one of my go-tos.

I also love milk thistle if it's a very clean form. I like Gaia Herbs. Gaia Herbs has a really great milk thistle. And I like dandelion root, dandelion tea or dandelion root. It cleans the bile ducts within the liver and the gallbladder.

Those are three of my top herbs. There are many other herbs. One I can't forget though, if you have liver stones, liver hemangiomas, kidney stones, bladder stones, I want you to look at one called chanca piedra, which is known as bodyguard supreme, and it is called the stone breaker. It's also known as stone breaker, bodyguard supreme.

This will clean up and dissolve, and it's been shown through so many studies and clinical studies in other countries that it's dissolving kidney stones, bladder stones, and gallbladder stones. I love it. In Chinese medicine, another one that they add in there is going to be called golden thread. Golden thread is a plant known as coptis, but golden thread is beautiful. It'll clean up the gallbladder as well and kill off the infections.

These are some of the herbs that if you do a slow, steady intake, don't try to take five or ten a day, maybe do one or two, you'll start naturally giving the liver and gallbladder what it needs to start flushing the infections. You'd never want to take a supplement, though, that gives you a gallbladder heavy flush, a gallbladder attack. Nothing that makes your liver hurt to where you feel like to double over, you can't operate.

Anytime you have high amounts of liver enzymes or gallbladder, you usually can tell a person with the signs and symptoms I just talked about before. They also could have jaundice in the skin, yellowing of the eyes. They could have green in their poop. Yes, bile in their poop. They could have floating stools. Write that down. If you are having an excess of liver toxicity symptoms,

And reduce function. Some of these are your biggest things. The yellowing of your skin or your eyes, bloodshot eyes, and the floating stools. You want to take an herbal or supplement to the point where you start to notice your skin starts to go a little clearer. Your stools start to sink instead of float.

You start to notice these small changes. And sometimes people take it and they're like, I don't know if it's doing anything different. Those are the small changes. Then you can start noticing that your body doesn't smell so bad from all the yeast. Your scalp will stop itching and have dandruff. You'll start to see that my TMJ is starting to release. My shoulder and my hips are stopped hurting. Why? Because you're clearing out the organs. You're not trying to do it in such a severe way like we do here in the States. We try to get stuff done like as quick as we can.

So what we want to do is do it at a nice, easy rate. Those are some of my suggestions there. I say dietary wise, when you're eating, you do not want to, while you're trying to clean the liver and the gallbladder, please remove all excess sugars, refined sugars.

such as candy bars, excess ice cream, high fructose corn syrup, very sugary juices and drinks, all sodas, all cokes, high amounts of starches that are forms of sugar such as cornstarch, yes, cornstarch, soy starch, wheat starch, potato starch, high amounts of, you know, french fries. I'm not saying all of these are bad. What I am saying is

you need to cut down your glycemic index. You should try to reduce your sugar intake to less than 12 to 15% of grams of sugar a day. Now, some argue that you can go up to 50 grams, seriously, 50 grams, because if you use the right amounts of sugars and starches, you'll feed the body the energy it needs to function. But if you have an overgrowth of yeast,

I don't want somebody to stop eating sugars where they feel so weak they can't function. But you have to reduce sugars to the point where you're not going to feed the sugars into the yeast and the fungus and the bacteria and the infections in the liver and just cause an uproar. You have to start to starve them out essentially. So you can take the supplements, but you need to find out the glycemic index and the sugar level of the food you're eating.

If it's very high, such as fruits like high amounts of sugary apples or pineapple or cherries, bananas, if you have those sugary fruits, they'll feed a lot of infections as well. You need to look at an anti-inflammatory, low-sugar diet and do it at a moderate rate. Go into it slowly. Do not try to do something so heavy that you feel horrible. Some people are like, I want to hit it hard and get fast and just try to get it out of my system. Don't do that. You'll get sick. Be realistic.

You be a real estate and you say, I got a function. I could be there for my family, for my work, for my job. This is a long game. You take those things out of your diet. Take that out of your diet. When you start to take it out of your diet, you'll start craving sugars more. You'll start craving more things because the infections in your body are going to crave it. So when the parasites and the yeast start to come out, you're going to start to notice that, man, I want more sugar. Why? Because those infections are craving it.

They live symbiotically with you. They try to. Your body has gotten so used to them that it actually has created a relationship with them. It's like when I say there's some individuals that they say they came and lived at my house and they would never leave. They just stayed in my extra room and they just – they lived off of what I gave them and they never want to do anything on their own. Well, that's what the infections do. But what do we give them? We give them lots of sugars. So –

You have these infections in the body and they're feeding it and you're going to get hungry for them. So I'm not saying stop all sugars. Sometimes I tell people like start taking the herbs, start cleaning them out, the liver out. You can reduce the sugars and you still have to eat some sugars. You don't want to go into a complete rebellion of the microbes because you feel sick and horrible. They'll start to poop in your body and they'll create a lot of toxins and you feel horrible.

So if you eat moderate, low glycemic index foods, you'll start to function properly and you may give them a little bit of sugar so they stay happy. But at the same time, you start to look at these herbals I just mentioned, start to flush them out. But if you combine that with that eating habit, you'll eventually start to flush them out.

Then you will find out the microbe that is hanging out the most. When you start to do this pattern, I'm telling you, you can start doing extra testing. Find out if there's more parasites in your body, if there's more yeast, if there's more mold.

Check if there's Lyme disease. You'll start to get these symptoms. If you get symptoms in your body, you have to write them down and go, okay, research them. Listen to some of the podcasts we have here. Is that more related to Lyme or to mold or to fungus? And then you start to take the herbals that we suggest on here and start to gently flush those infections out even deeper. You'll get down to the nitty gritty within the liver and the gallbladder. So that's a pattern all the while you're drinking water, right?

Some people say give up coffee. Not everybody has to give up coffee when they do this. Coffee enemas are great. Coffee intake normally is great too if you have good CYP genes in the liver. So don't try to blame coffee. If coffee is not good for you, then don't drink it. But you start to see these patterns that open up and you start to follow these patterns. And then I say patients – I tell patients look into coffee enemas.

I'm not saying do one every week, but one every week is not horrible. It'll start to help with gallbladder flushing and liver flushing. I also like for you to look into and consider castor oil packs. Some people do castor oil suppositories. I always say remember eating the low or anti-inflammatory diet. And I like when individuals do red light therapy, red light therapy or red light sauna to help with liver stagnation and lymph stagnation.

Getting the lymph to move, you could do that with red light, red light sauna, and or you could add in a trampoline or a bounding version, something that helps you bound and move the lymph. But do not do it excessively at the beginning. Do it very gently when it comes to lymph flow.

Some people do ALT, which is an assisted lymph therapy. They do this because it's a small static electrical device that pulls the lymph through the lymph nodes because they can get congested and stagnant and stuck. They're so congested with infections. And this can happen around the liver and the intestines. So you can go find an electric lymph therapy practitioner in your area, usually a good massage therapist with thermography involved. Do some bounding. Start to use these things in your body.

Using red light therapy or sauna. Sweat. Many people can't sweat because they have too much stagnation in their skin. But learn, get your body to start sweating. Using the enemas, starting to make sure that you're pooping every day. You need to at least poop once a day. At least. And you'll start to notice with all this that your hair could start to stay more stable. You may grow some new hair buds. You may start to see fuller, thicker hair.

You're going to let your liver take all the sulfurs and cysteines and the amino acids to create more hair and to have better skin and nails. So we have some of these simple procedures. People think that's a lot too much. No, you can do all these. If you just set up your habits right, you can in my opinion. I've done them. I do them. So I want you guys to look into this, and one of the things I don't want you to forget is that you must look into your emotions.

Probably one of the biggest things I can't stress enough to my patients every single day in the office is that your emotions will put you into fight or flight. And your emotions, whether it's anger, fear, dread, bad memories, if it's anything that is pushing your cortisol levels high will make you go into a fight or flight pattern. And the liver and the gallbladder, the wood element, the green color is associated with anger.

And anger will drive your cortisol levels high. It'll make you get hot-headed. It could give you those furrow lines between your eyebrows. Yes, that's a liver sign for anger. It could literally – anger could change the way you think, and it changes the way your liver functions in your gallbladder because they respond to anger. Your voice could be a little more shouting, a little more angry. Those organs respond to anger. How?

By trying to get stronger to help you metabolize more sugars and fats to be able to handle your problems. That's what they do. They grow in response to your anger. You need to work on EFT, emotional freedom technique tapping, or neuroemotional technique work with practitioners in ET.

neurofeedback, neurofeedback's amazing, brain therapy, brain tap is awesome, look into brain tap, EMDR, therapies that work with the emotions, and you really need to find out those that neurologically can change the way you think.
