D: Hay una hormona producida por el páncreas que se llama insulina. Cada vez que comemos, la insulina ayuda a que el azúcar en la sangre entre en las células para que se use como fuente de energía.  Otro nombre para el azúcar sanguíneo es glucosa. Cuando una persona está subida de peso, sobre todo con grasa alrededor del abdomen, las células del cuerpo pueden volverse resistentes a la insulina, de modo que el páncreas necesita producir más insulina para que el azúcar entre en las células. Si llega al punto en que ya no es suficiente, el azúcar se acumula en la sangre, causando diabetes tipo 2. Con el tiempo, el páncreas puede desgastarse y perder su capacidad de producir insulina, lo cual se parece a lo que ocurre en la diabetes tipo 1.

P: ¿Cuál es la cura? 

D: La diabetes es una enfermedad crónica, pero en las etapas tempranas se puede controlar sin medicamentos, principalmente bajando de peso, comiendo alimentos nutritivos bajos en carbohidratos y haciendo ejercicio regularmente.  Además, voy a recetarle un medicamento que se llama metformina. Este medicamento baja la producción de glucosa del hígado, le ayudará a bajar de peso y reducirá la probabilidad de sufrir complicaciones con la diabetes.

P: ¿Y qué me aconseja comer?

D: Le voy a dar una guĂ­a de alimentos para ayudarle a elegir opciones saludables que no eleven tanto su nivel de glucosa en la sangre.

P: ¿Cuáles son los síntomas de la diabetes? Porque no sabía que la tenía. No he sentido nada.

D: Eso es porque, cuando los niveles de azúcar no están muy altos, generalmente no hay síntomas.

P: Entonces, si no tengo síntomas, ¿por qué necesito controlarla? 

D: Porque la diabetes puede causar mucho daño al cuerpo.  El exceso de azúcar en la sangre, perjudica los riñones, las arterias, el corazón, los ojos y los nervios. Esto puede provocar ataques al corazón, insuficiencia renal, ceguera y adormecimiento en las manos y los pies. 

P: ¡Ay! No me asuste, doctora.
