Key Insights

What are the key events happening at the D23 Ultimate Fan Event in August 2024?

The D23 Ultimate Fan Event features events at both the Honda Center and the Anaheim Convention Center. At the Honda Center, Friday includes the Disney Entertainment Showcase, Saturday focuses on Disney Experiences, and Sunday hosts the Disney Legends Award Ceremony. The Anaheim Convention Center offers multiple stages with events like the Music of Marvel Studios, 30 Years of Toy Story, and The Muppets 70th Anniversary. Other highlights include panels on Disney animation, theme parks, and exclusive signings with Disney legends and creators.

What is the documentary 'Not Just a Goof' about, and why is 'A Goofy Movie' significant to its fans?

'Not Just a Goof' is a documentary exploring the creation and cultural impact of 'A Goofy Movie.' The film delves into the challenges of making the movie, its reception, and its lasting influence on fans. Many fans, particularly latchkey kids from the 1990s, found emotional resonance in the film's themes of family and reconciliation. The documentary also features behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with key creatives, including director Kevin Lima and voice actor Bill Farmer.

What were Jeff's dining experiences at Disneyland during the Independence Day weekend?

Jeff sampled various Disneyland eateries, including the Palm Breeze Bar, Carthay Circle, Club 33, and Napa Rose. Highlights included the Silencio Bruno sandwich at Jolly Holiday, Matterhorn-themed Dole Whip with coconut water, and Walt's Chili at Club 33. He also enjoyed the O-O-A drink at Trader Sam's, which comes with a theatrical presentation. Jeff noted that while some dishes were excellent, others, like the pork chop at Carthay Circle, were underwhelming.

Why was the attendance at Disneyland low during the Fourth of July weekend in 2024?

Disneyland experienced lower-than-expected attendance during the Fourth of July weekend in 2024, possibly due to ongoing construction and refurbishments for upcoming attractions like Tiana's Bayou Adventure and Haunted Mansion Holiday. Additionally, the absence of major holiday-specific decorations or celebrations may have contributed to the reduced crowds. Jeff noted that the park felt less busy than usual, with shorter wait times for rides.

What special Matterhorn-themed treats were available at Disneyland for its 65th anniversary?

For the Matterhorn's 65th anniversary, Disneyland offered a special Dole Whip made with coconut water instead of pineapple juice, topped with shredded blue coconut to resemble snow. Additionally, Club 33 featured a tiki bowl shaped like the Yeti's footprint. These limited-time offerings celebrated the iconic attraction's legacy and were part of the park's ongoing Pixar Fest celebrations.

You're listening to Mousetalgia for the week of July 14, which is the week of Disneyland's 69th birthday, 2024. Hang on to them hats and glasses, because this here is the wildest podcast in the wilderness. This is Mousetalgia. Carpe Kingdom, seize the magic.

so

Welcome to Nostalgia, your podcast about Disneyland, Disney history, and living the Disney life. I am Jeff. I'm your host for this week, along with my co-host, Julia. Julia, welcome back to the show. Hi. How are you? I'm good. Always glad to have you on the show. So we got a lot of stuff to talk about this week. I am glad Julia is here to join me because we are going to talk about a very special event we both attended at the Walt Disney Family Museum involving something near and dearer

to way more people than I ever really envisioned. So we'll talk about that in a few minutes. And then, of course, I'm going to talk about Disneyland since it is Disneyland's 69th birthday this week. So we got to comment on that. But first, let's start with our Nostalgia Shock. ♪

The Mousetalgia Charcuterie. And this week we are going to, of course, talk about the just released, like literally like a couple hours ago, dropped onto our doorsteps, the schedule for this month or next month, right? Next month. For this year's Expo. Let's say it that way. It's not an Expo. For this year's D23 Expo.

fan gathering. D23 in August. You can call it an expo if you want because it is an expo, but that has to be now a lowercase expo because it's

just d23 um but that's okay i'm not calling it the expo anymore no no it's d23 a fan fest or something i don't know if i'm ever going to be able to call it anything else yeah it does have a long title but expo is not part of it but that doesn't matter we know exactly what it is so let's talk about first a little bit now i will tell you people listeners um

I don't really plan to do a ton of expo previewing as Mousetagia has done in the past. Primarily, it just is a little bit less...

I don't want to say it's less interesting to me because when I looked at the schedule, I thought, wow, there's a lot of great stuff and it's going to be exciting to report about. But I just I mean, there's a plethora of Disney podcasts that are talking about this stuff, or maybe I'm even thinking more of Disney online communities discussing this stuff. And I just don't feel compelled to kind of get into that zone or into that lane this

This year, but we're going to talk about it right now. And who knows? Maybe maybe some of this conversation will spark something. And I'll just want to do another show all about getting ready for the expo. But I expect expo preparation would be similar to any of the other years that we've talked about it on the show. So you can always go back and listen to our expo preparing for the expo.

episodes of Nostalgia. But having said that, Julia, do you have the magic schedule in front of you? I do. Okay. Let's just quick go through it. Let everyone hear this is what's going to be happening at the D23 fan gathering fest. Whatever we're going to. I should have opened it so I could know the actual name of this thing before we started. Oh, you'll see it on the top of your schedule. It says Ultimate Fan Event. That's it.

It's D23, the ultimate fan event. There. I'm glad you had it open. All right, Julia. So talk to us about the schedule for D23, the ultimate fan event this year. All right. Well, as probably most everybody knows, they have two venues this year. So there is the Honda Center and the traditional near and dear to our hearts Anaheim Convention Center. Yes.

So I think we can get the Honda Center out of the way really quickly because it's just Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Friday is like what is the title? It just it doesn't.

It just says Disney Entertainment Showcase for Friday, Disney Experiences Showcase for Saturday, and Disney Legends Award Ceremony on Sunday. So I think what that means is that Friday will be about the movies and the celebrities and the shows. Saturday will be about the theme parks, the cruise ships, whatever, the hotels. And then Sunday will be the Legends Ceremony. And that's the one you're the most excited for. That is the one. And it happens to be at 5 o'clock p.m. We have to go home that night. I don't know what's going to happen. Oh.

Oh, no. I don't know what's going to happen. They're also simulcasting it at the convention center. I did see that. So who knows if we'll just kind of. I mean, we'll see. The first two nights of trying to get to the Honda Center and back will be informative. So if it's just like a disaster nightmare, then I may just have to watch it on replay. Maybe when we get to Sunday, there might be one that you're interested in then because there's something happening in the morning with the legends.

I kind of expect – I keep talking about this, and who knows? I could be so off base. I am imagining John Williams is going to conduct something sometime in the future.

And I'm thinking it would be the legend ceremony at the Honda Center. Like a song. I mean, he's how many 90s, 92, 93? Like he can't, you know, he can't can can't stand there forever. But I feel like because he's being inducted. John Williams is one of the inductees, I think, this year. So I think so. Yeah. Yeah. So I just the possibility of watching him conduct one more time. I'm I'm hoping anyway. So let's leave Honda Center off the table. Let's talk about. Yes, because I'm not going to that. So.

Yeah. So give us a rundown, Julia, of what's going on at the convention center.

Okay. Do we want to do it by stage? Do you want me to do it by time or just quick? Whatever I'm seeing. I'm curious in what you're interested in. Hopefully you're a little bit curious in what I'm interested in. So why don't you just quick go like on Friday, here's the stage and here are the things that are going to be offered. And then you don't even need, you don't even need to give times or anything. Just kind of run down the title. What's happening. Okay. And then if something is appealing or you want to see it, stop and make a mark of that. And then we'll talk about it. Okay. All right.

Friday. Friday. On the premiere stage. And I do have to say, I don't remember each specific stage and whether they have been renamed this year. I'm presuming this is the big room, the big room, with the big monitors, the premiere stage. Very, very possible because they've got some big stuff in there. But in the premiere stage, they are having music of Marvel Studios, 30 years of Toy Story.

Bringing the worlds of Disney animation to life in Disney Parks and Disney Princess the concert. Okay, music of Marvel is intriguing to me. What are the chances that they have Michael Giacchino in there, like, conducting something? I mean, I don't know if there'll be an orchestra or just... They're just all about the conducting.

Well, they're having a lot of music stuff this year. Like, what if he's there? You're a music guy. Because he writes a lot of music for, but he also wrote and directed Werewolf by Night and wrote the music for it, too. That's what I mean. Wrote the music and directed it. So, like, maybe he'll do something about that. Who knows what's going to happen at the Marvel. But it just seems very promising. What are you looking forward to Friday?

On that stage? On that stage, yeah. If I had to pick, I would say 30 years of Toy Story, but I'm not super intrigued. Not even the princess party? Julia. I went to the Disney Princess, the concert, last time, and I've seen them twice before. And I don't think at this point...

I don't even think Susan Egan is one of the princesses that is singing anymore. No, she got the boot. I think one of them. No, I think she was the last one. Oh, no, it wasn't her. It wasn't her. It was the, was it the one who did Cinderella? Was it Laura Osnes? Yeah. Yes, it was Laura. All right. So, but I agree. We took the girls, I think, two years ago to the Disney Princess Party. And, you know, it was fine. It still has the same, or it had at that time, the same kind of.

leader on the piano. And I believe he still is. I think he's the heart and soul of the Disney Princess Party. At any rate, I will say if you are looking for something to do, it's actually... It's a fun time. Quite an interesting show. It was... I gotta say though, when we could see it in a nightclub with the singer of Jasmine and you know, I mean it was... Meg. Yeah, that was pretty cool. And Meg. That was when it was still small. That was really something. Right now it's...

a little bit more spread out with some Broadway singers and some, a variety, like they rotate in singers that are a little less prominent than the film voices. So, you know, it's still going to be great. So now, now Disney's involved with it before. I don't think they were officially involved. So they were not. And so it was, of course,

Probably better because of that. So that was Friday. What's next? So the next stage is the Walt Disney Archive stage, which don't sleep on the archive stage. They always have great stuff. Yep. And so what they're doing on Friday is so how do you direct animation anyway?

The Muppets 70, a glamorous Miss Piggy retrospective, Walt Disney and El Grupo, a journey through Latin America, and making a goofy movie, The Road to Lake Destiny. I bet you can guess which one of those I'm interested in. I'm going to guess The Muppets 70th Anniversary, whatever. Absolutely. How...

How can you not be excited for Miss Piggy? Yeah. I mean, that's... I could see where it would be interesting. So we'll see who comes out to voice Miss Piggy. I would be shocked if it was Frank Oz. I'm sure it's not. But like you're hoping, John Williams gets up and conducts. I am hoping Frank Oz comes in and does some Miss Piggy. So...

We all have our dreams. I think you're probably right. We're probably about equal in our possibilities of having our expectations met. All right. So there's some good stuff there. Of course, we are going to talk about the last presentation there shortly because we got a sneak preview of that at the Walt Disney Family Museum a couple weeks ago. So we'll talk about that later. I would have been shocked if this was not somewhere on the expo schedule. So, yeah, we'll talk more about that and maybe...

you'll have more information about whether you're interested in that presentation or not. Sure. Okay. Moving on to the next stage, which is the backlogs backlog stage. Um, there are some good ones on here too. So first off they have behind the summer shenanigans with the Phineas and Ferb creators. Uh, then they're going into Disney epic Mickey rebrushed the return of a beloved classic, uh,

All right. Disneyland Foods yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Ooh, I'm going to be talking about Disneyland Foods in a few minutes here. So maybe. Go on. Your favorite Disney Larkana train guard game, past, present, future, presented by Ravensburger. Okay. Hold on. I guess we're talking about these things as we go through them. So if there's anything you want to talk about also, just stop and talk about it. Let me say about Ravensburger. Okay.

Like, first of all, you're going to get free cards. I can confidently predict, although if I'm wrong, sorry, you're going to get some kind of card. Right. So there's that. What will it be? Oh, who knows? Who knows? Will it be the craziness of the last episode?

You know, last time. I doubt it. Although I will say I just don't know. Like, it's kind of weird with trading card games. Like, sometimes people just get super excited and then boom. Like, so I guess it's possible this becomes another rare card. Anything's possible. I mean, it'll be a rare card because it'll only be for the people that go. But whether or not it becomes like worth a thousand dollars like our Mickey Mouse cards are, I don't know. That remains to be seen. All right. So I but I have given up on lore kind of 100 percent. I have to.

It's far too... Like, they should have... Well, look at me. I hate podcasts where they're like, they should have done this. They should have done this. And I hate those podcasts. I'm just about to do it. Like, I kind of wish they had let it become organically what it was going to become and let the cards organically be valued at whatever they're going to be valued at. But I feel like Larkana went overboard on the whole. It's about the game and not about the collecting...

You know what? I never figured out how to play the game. Well, and also, honestly, I don't think trading card...

role-playing type games are really that exciting to me like they do have an audience like you but you see these tournaments in malls and things like they do have an audience right but i think a large part of these games popularity is the trading part of it so and the rarities and stuff so i don't know we'll see i lost interest in lorikana 100 i'm super glad i have my thousand dollar mickey card like hold on to that i'll just hold on to that for probably ever all right so keep going all

All right. And then the last one on Friday on that stage is Walt Disney Treasures, Personal Art and Artifacts from the Walt Disney Family Museum. Oh, okay. Pause again. Are you going to want to see that? I am not. It depends. I am interested in it. And if I'm not doing anything else, yes, I want to go to that. Otherwise, maybe not because we live so close to the Walt Disney Family Museum. They are doing their own stuff. I'm already...

going to be going to something at the museum for this book which probably will be more interesting for me

When is that book event? Do you remember? October. In October. Okay. So the Walt Disney Family Museum is going to be doing, I would guess, a similar presentation or the same in October when the book is released. But the one interesting thing is I presume they'll have some advanced copies at the Expo. Maybe not, but to go over, I mean, this is their chance, so maybe they won't have it ready to go. That's true. But either way. So here's the...

So here's the first nostalgia break in here. So Brie Bertolaccini, who works for the Walt Disney Family Museum, had a big hand to play in kind of facilitating the gathering and reporting.

reporting on all of these items that are pictured in this book because it's one of those treasures books you know what i mean where you i think it is where you have like little envelopes and packages and oh cool yeah you know what i mean i believe that's what it is so um and you know to be honest i'm not a big huge fan of those kind of fake replica type things i mean i kind of get it

And when it was a book about love letters, fiction like that was super cool. The first person that ever did it, the author, it was like little love letters and weird mystery letters and things. And it was fiction. Right. Yeah. But then it became this thing where we do replicas of things all over the place. And it's sort of cool, sort of not. But I am super excited. But I'm super excited to see the Walt Disney Family Museum's version of this because we've seen all this stuff so many times. So to see it a little bit more close to the like.

kind of feel like you're holding it, that could be a big deal, right? Yeah. And even just maybe it might be something that I've seen a trillion times in the museum, but I haven't stopped and looked at. Yeah. And I guess my point was Brie is a friend of the show, right? Yes. She's been on the show before. So good job, Brie. We're excited for your book. All right. Are we on to... What's next? We are on to the Hyperion stage. Okay. And on Friday, they are doing...

The costuming artistry behind Disney experiences, National Geographic's Extreme Adventures, National Geographic's A Real Bug's Life Live, the pioneering women of Disney animation, and from book to screen, how best-selling novels become hit TV series and films. All right. So any one of those could be a...

Interesting. Like, Breakout. Wow, that was so good. Did you go to that? You know what I mean? Women in animation will be super popular. Yes. The television shows. I looked at the description and it looks a little specific to me. Like, the shows that they are featuring are not as interesting to me. Me neither. Yeah. So, whether or not I... Yeah, I wasn't... None of these...

totally spoke to me. Yeah. So I am not certain what I think about that, but like, you know, it's kind of like Christian says about the modern family panel. Like, don't you wish you had gone? Yeah. So who knows? But none of this is about new television. So these are, this is different. I do think the, the women in animation will be interesting. So it's probably my main pick. All

All right. What's next? The next stage is Disney Plus and the entire weekend you can just meet Bluey and Bingo. Yeah, it's Bluey and Bingo all day, all the time. But you still have to have a reservation to meet them. So it sounds to me like you have a pretty good shot if you want a photo with Bluey of getting up there. But you have to choose one of your slots if you want to use it for a photo up there.

There's so many slots. So if that is something that is important to you, I think you have a pretty good chance. Yeah. Moving on to one that we're probably going to have to make some hard choices on, but the Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, which is more of like a pavilion. And they've got just a mixture of giveaways, signings, talks, demos, etc.

There's a lot going on. Yeah. So just rattle them off here. Yeah. So the ever popular Pixar ball giveaway. Disney legend Mark Henn is doing a signing. There's a live demonstration by Disney Animations ink and paint team. Walt Disney Animation Studios exclusive pennant plus special item, which

which usually means a poster of some sort. Signing Disney animation director Ron Clements. Intros and outros, the art of Walt Disney Animation Studios title cards. This one caught my eye. That one sounds cool to me. Yeah, yeah. They're also doing a signing with elemental director Peter Son.

Live demonstration by Disney Animations ink and paint team. Pixar ball giveaway and they're giving away the pennant again. So there's a few that are repeating. Yeah. So these are the things that Kristen and I used to just kind of stand around and wait for. I will say Tina and I.

We didn't have, well, for the last expo when you had to make reservations, we just waited until there was kind of a break and they were like, okay. And they let people in for the giveaway.

Or the signing. We did it for to get the pennant and then also for a signing. So I wouldn't count on that, but it's possible. It's not all totally lost, but it's possible if you want to spend your time just kind of

of hanging around and waiting for them to clearly open the line. Yeah, that's true. Okay, moving on. Moving on to Lucasfilm. They all weekend are doing Experience ILM Stagecraft, which I don't exactly know what it means. I think that... Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't that the name of the...

the way that they handle their backgrounds in their television shows these days. It says, looking at the description more closely, it says Lucasfilm presents the magic file and stagecraft that technology used to bring to life the worlds of The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and more. Okay, so they're probably going to... Yeah, so it sounds like they're going to have... I don't know if it's going to be like a recorded thing or if they're going to have different speakers throughout the weekend, but it's not... It's vague. I would...

If I were going to guess, which is I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is probably right, they'll probably have a small version of it set up and they'll video you. I don't know if it'll be something you can keep, but you can at least look at yourself walking around in the Mandalorian landscape. Because how they film these films now, they don't do green screen anymore. They do actual projected. They take what they would put on the green screen and they project it into the set like it's the background. Right.

And so but the thing about it is it's digitally created. So the camera can follow the actor and the background will track with it as if it's really somewhere. Do you know what I mean? So the camera, like if you the actor moves around and turns and the camera is moving with him, the background will because of the computer and knowing where the camera is will kind of adjust itself accordingly.

To move along as if it was a real place. I believe now that I could have someone from ILM, if anyone of their listening from ILM and I just massacred that I, you know, I'm sorry, but I, I'm thinking that all weekend long, you'll be able to kind of go and put yourself in one of these, you know, one of these backgrounds and kind of see how it works. If you're walking around and like how it looks on the screen with you inside the place, that's, that would be my guess. Is that interesting to you? Somewhat.

Somewhat not for me, but we'll see. We'll see. Maybe it'll be something really cool. Julia, I gave you full permission to not even mention this pavilion for the next two days as we go through. Okay. I wasn't going to. We're not talking about that or Disney Plus again. Okay, good. Talent Central, which also has a lot going on.

um more friends of the show more friends of the show friend eric robison is doing a signing uh actor daniel logan from star wars young boba fett it doesn't say what he's doing i'm guessing i would guess yeah i'm not sure um imagineer greg pro principal concept designer signing fine art prints dan povenmeyer and jeff swampy marsh creators of phineas and ferb are doing i think it's a

Let me see if I open it up. Is it a picture? It just says meet. So maybe it's pictures. Maybe it's signing. They're not totally saying on all of these things. Yeah. But Phineas and Ferb is one of my favorite shows. Yeah. That's exciting. Yeah.

And then Eric Robeson is back. Brian Crosby is back to sign. Robeson, yes. Okay, so Brian Crosby is also a friend of the show. So Brian Crosby, way back when Kristen and I... Actually, the day Kristen met Alice Davis was a day that we did an event at Disneyland Hotel about the Haunted Mansion. And Brian Crosby was there at our table. He sat signing pictures of...

a character he drew from the Haunted Mansion. I don't know if I'm supposed to talk about that very much, but he did that. And I was sitting there just signing Doom Buggy stuff, and we were just hanging out, and Kristen was supposed to be there with us, but she had volunteered herself to be Alice's concierge for the day, and...

Nice.

I think that might be his highest form of honor, to be honest. But he is the creative director of themed entertainment between Marvel and Disney's themed experiences. That's awesome. So he's kind of a big deal. He's kind of a big deal. What else is going on? You can grab a photo with National Geographic's Bertie Gregory and Mariana Van Zeller. Bertie.

Do you know this person? Not personally. Okay. You just like Bertie? Mm-hmm. Okay. Leonard Maltin and Jesse Maltin, film historians and Disney fans, are going to be there to meet and greet. And they have a great podcast. If you've never listened to Maltin on Movies, you should listen to it.

In their archives, they talk to some Disney legends like Tim Burton and Richard Sherman. Go listen. And then Imagineer Greg Pro, principal concept designer, will be signing fine art prints. Legendary Pixar writer-director Andrew Stanton signing Toy Story artwork. That's exciting. That's super cool, yeah.

Walt Disney Animation Studios director Ron Clements, also very cool. Walt Disney Archives Kevin M. Kern and Mike Buckoff book signing. I'm not sure which book this is. Yeah, shoot. What is it? Let me see if it says. Oh, it is. So it is the official Walt Disney quote book, which I think I own. Maybe. So they came up with a book finally to say these are actual...

Like, well, we've heard out of the mouth of Walt Disney, you know, they believe these to be actual quotes from Walt Disney because some Disney books have manufactured quotes that were kind of, you know. But I'm just saying there were words other people made for him, like notably Marty Sklar. And some of those got attributed to him and put into books. And maybe he even literally said that. And put on merchandise. Yeah. Well, but then...

But then Marty Schleyer says, well, no one ever actually said, if you could dream it, you could do it. Anyway, the point is, this book should have none of that. This book should be...

Just the real stuff. Fresh and authentic. Kevin, we spent, Kristen and I and Dave spent, I think, a weekend at the Mouse Meet a few, like, I don't know, 10 years ago. He's a really interesting guy. And he's, you know, knows just about, he knows so much Disney history. So that should be. There's a reason he's working for the archives. Yeah. That should be a worthwhile thing.

Book signing. Book signing. Yeah. All right. Also, Imagineered Jeremy Fulton. Oh, stop. Okay. Jeremy Fulton. Jeremy Fulton sent me a crayon drawing of the Haunted Mansion when he was a kid to DoMuggies.com. Do you still have it? Because you should bring it with you and have him sign it or just take a picture with him.

But no, no, no. He scanned it. And I mean, it wasn't like he sent me. I got. Although I did get a couple. I thought he sent a fan. I got a couple. Which I know you have. Yeah. I got a couple of drawings in the mail. That was not. It was not that. But he did draw a picture. Actually, was it crayon? It was a childhood drawing. Right. I don't know if it was. It might have been markers and colored pencils. But he sent that to do muggies because he was a fan. And now he is a celebrated senior graphic designer for Walt Disney.

I think for Imagineering, but he's a Disney artist at least. And his art is famous because it's the things that have text, right? So, you know, the big posters they sell that are all text and just like intricately drawn hand-drawn text. That's Jeremy Fulton. So I am super excited. I hope I get, I might even waste like a couple of my shots on Jeremy Fulton slots because I really want to get his, like his print because it's a free print.

Which I presume will be textual. Let's see if it says. It just says artwork. It just says complimentary artwork, yeah. So who knows? Whatever it is, it's going to be awesome. So I'm looking forward to saying hello to Jeremy. I think I've met him once before. And I think I told him, do you remember when you wrote to Do Muggies? And he was like, oh, you. I think he was like embarrassed. I don't remember. I'm sure not. Well, you know, most of the art you draw when you're a kid, you are embarrassed by it. So.

Just got to show you how old Do-Money is. It's better than anything I can do now. All right. So what's up next? What is up next is Disney legend Martha Blanding and Tim O'Day signing their new book, former president of Walt Disney Imagineering Bob Weiss signing his new book, and team members from Lurkana signing Opportunity.

Yeah, that'll be another free card. I'm kind of looking forward to Martha Blanding's book. I have like she wouldn't know me or anything, but I've interfaced with her like over the Doom Buggies years over the past 30 years, numerous times about Disneyland events and stuff. And her book is called Groundbreaking Magic, A Black Woman's Journey Through the Happiest Place on Earth. And if you want to get this signed, you'll have to purchase the book in advance. Yes. All right. So what's next?

What is next is the next stage live at World of Disney, the product experience. And there you'll be able to meet the artist Ashley Taylor, meet the artist Stacey Aoyama,

meet the artist Alex Reigert-Waters and a book signing with Pam Brandon. Okay. Book signings are always good possibilities. So that brings us to a close on Friday. You know what? I'm going to say this has taken way too long. So let's just say this is an example of what a day at the Disney Expo is like. There are multitudes of opportunities. It's going to be just...

Who knows how it's going to run? Because every year there's things that go great. There's things that go horribly wrong. So tune in for Jeff's report after the ultimate fan event. I do want to highlight one more thing, though. And I think it's Sunday afternoon at the... Can you go to Sunday and look at the... Yes, I'm looking at it. I think it's Talent Central down near the bottom. It's a book signing with Ashley Eckstein. Do you see that? Because I'm excited about this one specifically because...

Yes. There is a book signing on Sunday, August 11th from 1.45 to 2.45 at Talent Central with Ashley Eckstein and Sunny Channel. And they are signing copies of their new book, Bring the Magic Home, an exploration of design inspired by Disney parks. I am so excited for Sunny. Now I'm not even sure if I've ever actually...

I've always heard it in my head as Sunny Chanel, which maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong. I consider us to be friends, Sunny and I, and I actually don't even know how to say her name. I think Chanel sounds better. But I'm super excited for this book because Sunny, when she first got this gig from Disney, she was so excited and she told me about it and actually asked me to have a couple leads, which I do not think I had. I think she...

had a bunch of better ideas than I ever could have dreamed up, but she is super talented, um, creative person. So this book is going to be super cool. I think it's just kind of living spaces that are designed around Disney theming. You know, it kind of goes right along with our whole living that Disney life. Um,

I am super excited to get able to congratulate Sonny and see her. So I hopefully that's something that I get. Yeah. So anyway. All right. So lots of stuff coming to D23, the ultimate fan experience. Did I get that right? I think so. Ultimate fan event. Event. So much happening. It doesn't all fit on a charcuterie board. It does not. And so, and I'm sure we may bring this up one or two more times before the actual event.

But we're looking forward to that. So thanks for going over that with me, Julia. Moving right along. We are going to briefly talk about an event that we referred to before. We got to see at the Walt Disney Family Museum and that was called, what was it called? Not Just a Goof. Not Just a Goof.

Is that the whole thing? Isn't there a subtitle? Yes. I'm now looking at the ticket. It is called Not Just a Goof 2024 Behind a Goofy Movie 1995 with very special guests. Yes. Okay. So basically what this is, is...

A couple of filmmakers, documentary filmmakers, actually a couple of production type workers that are interested in film and they are filmmakers, at least now they are, came to the director of Goofy Movie. One of them happens to be his nephew. So that's kind of, you know, a little bit of the puzzle piece of the puzzle here. But they decided that the Goofy Movie, and if you've listened to Nostalgia, you might have kind of started to gather this, has an interestingly large fan base. Right.

I am not among those people. I do not hate it. I just don't know it. I think I've kind of seen it over my girl's heads, pieces by pieces, walking through rooms from time to time, because all the parts of it are familiar, but I just don't have a... I was in college during the Goofy movie, and I didn't really...

think much about it. Well, I was the target audience for it. But Julia here was a big time goofy movie consumer, right? Yes. So tell us the names, because I don't have the list of the paper for me. The names of the two creators. The directors are Eric Kimmelton and Chris Ninnis. And Eric Kimmelton is the nephew of Kevin Lima, who's the director. And then, of course, Kevin Lima, who also directed...

And Tarzan, right? So Kevin Lima was there and he basically became the narrator, not the narrator, the MC for the afternoon. And he asked questions of the voice of Goofy, Bill Farmer, who was also a special guest.

We've been able to meet Bill Farmer before, but it was kind of always kind of he's such such a funny, jovial, happy guy. It's kind of cool. And then Kevin Lima has a lot of good story, even though he was the emcee. Somehow he had a lot of good stories in there about just making this movie and kind of some of the challenges they had and some of the because he had to make it overseas. Like it was not a Walt Disney animation thing.

No, it was kind of a film. It was like a TV studio hybrid, right? Yes. So they were trying to make a full length animated feature on the budget of one of their television productions. Yeah. Kind of a pet project of Jeffrey Katzenberg.

Yeah. And which is also kind of crazy when you think about it. Right. So so they had to shop this out. Most of it, I think, was done in. Wait, where were they? Not France. They were in France. France. Right. Yeah. But some of it, I think, was in Canada, if I'm remembering. I think it was in multiple studios around the world, but I think mainly it was in France. Yeah. And so and he would and then Kevin would.

So the documentary turned into it started as well. We're going to talk about the fans of the Goofy movie. But once they realized Kevin said, wait, wait, wait, let me just show you my archives. The two filmmakers kind of got together and said, this is a story that we can turn into the whole the fandom, the making of the movie, the struggle, because there's an arc. There's a definite arc to the story here, which is how would you define like the overall arc of the film?

Well, basically, they said that it changed from them making a movie about the fandom, like you said, to them making a movie for the fandom. So Kevin Lima had tapes and tapes and tapes and tapes upon tapes of kind of behind-the-scenes film of them making this movie. So they watched those tapes over and over and over and kind of constructed the narrative of this film.

Yeah. And I would say, yeah, yeah. And I would say part of the what they uncovered or unearthed when they were making this is that the Goofy movie was like a almost like a substitute.

babysitter or parents figure in some kids lives because this was the era of the latchkey kid goofy movie like coincided with we need two incomes around the house um like a lot of lower income areas where parents just weren't around because they were working and they would put their kids in a room with a dv with the dvr it was also the i'm not dvr with the vcr because it was the year of the vc it was the age of the vcr vcr had like a 20 year

like it was around for quite a long time but like there were 20 years where like

you know, blockbuster video. And like, you know, the VCR was the centerpiece of the home, you know, and this was right in the middle of that. So there are an incredible amount. And this kind of goes to what I sort of realized and sort of didn't like the reason there are so many fans of this movie is because it was about family and they, their families were missing a part or a piece in some way. And they found it.

in the Goofy movie. Yeah, and they just heard a lot of, they heard more than one story say, well, this movie helped fix my relationship with my dad or my estranged parent in some way. So it has a lot of heart. Yeah, so, you know, I'm willing to take another angle on the Goofy movie after this, which is a big deal. It also has really great music.

Sure. Okay. You're like, no. Okay. It's not orchestra level music. Sure it is. I mean, okay. Well, we could go there. So it has its own soundtrack. Well, Goofy, the Goofy music. So you're talking about Powered.

Power line or power line. There's songs throughout the whole movie. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. All right. Now I, now I understand what you're trying to say. I thought you meant the documentary had really great. No, I'm talking about. Well, yeah. Okay. So yeah, the goofy movie does have some, um, you know, very popular. In fact, Bill Farmer is going to be performing one of the songs he sang. I think that on the, the road, the song, like, you know, driving down the road at the big Hollywood bowl, Disney music concert in a,

Is it this month or next month? I think it's this month. Yeah. So the music of the Goofy movie...

I don't know if the music was popular because of the success of the movie or vice versa. It's obviously well done. That power line stuff really sounds like it comes from that moment in early 90s time, right? Something else interesting that they did with this documentary is they also kind of created their own... I don't know the word I'm looking for. Parallel animated film of...

of the making of this movie. And they turned everybody that was involved in making this movie into, like, goofy, like,

Like dogs. Dogs. Yeah. So I would call that interstitial animation. So like throughout the film, there'd be little scenes. And he said, so they also had that. What was the animator, the director of that animation studios? Juan Uribe. Okay. Yeah. So they had Juan there along on the panel. Also, he's kind of a surprise guest. And he even said, sometimes like we didn't have.

you know, video or something to show a moment where we go from here to there. But we had some quotes and we had some information. So maybe we could just put it in the mouths of an animated character, like turn it into a dog character. And so they carried that theme through the whole, the whole film, which was pretty good. It was a very good idea. Any other highlights that you want to share about? I just, I,

thought it was interesting that there was not a single raving review for this movie. In fact, it was mostly pretty negative, which is so sad. But now it's just this whole, it's turned into a thing that I think until they had that panel at the D23 Expo, I also didn't know how beloved this movie was. I knew my sisters and I loved it, but

So they did some... What they did was take Goofy, a very one-dimensional character, and turn him into a role of a father in a movie, which basically redefined Goofy as a character in a way that they somewhat still look at him that way sometimes, but they also, as a studio, still look at him as just a comic one-note, right? So it's kind of...

People, especially animation reviewers, didn't really know if they should honor that, you know, because they didn't know what's the point of this, you know. And also, I think, and I'd have to go back and really watch this movie, I don't know if the father-son relationship works.

is more moving because the nature of that story, no matter who is the characters or the actors would elicit an emotional response or if they really acted it super, super well. Right. I think they did act it super well, but what I'm trying to say is it might've had a built in emotional reaction just because of what's going on. So I don't know that reviewers really knew how to tackle that. Like the reviews since have been much more positive than the reviews as it came out. Um,

And so it's really interesting, right? And it's hard. You can't really dissect the two. You can't say, well, all these kids' lives were changed because of the Goofy movie, but let's ignore that. Right. And anyone, who can say, well, that movie's no good? You know what I mean? So it's kind of hard to... It was review proof for its audience. You know what I mean? So yeah, it's just...

kind of a fascinating story. The way they've decided to tell the story in this documentary really is really well done. And it goes to show kind of the power of animation and the power of storytelling, Disney storytelling, because a lot of times they would come back to like, what is the heart of the story? And what are we trying to say here? And, you know, I know we're changing goofy into a different character, but,

You know, is it part of a good Disney story? So I highly recommend you go try to check out the Goofy panel because they're going to show this documentary with the filmmakers again. And one thing. Yeah. One thing that they mentioned is that Don Hahn is not affiliated with this film.

in any way other than they call him the dog father because he's kind of championing it, which is why they've gotten, probably why they've gotten some screenings on Disney Cruise Lines, probably why they're being included in the D23 Expo. And I'm really hoping that this film makes it onto Disney Plus somewhere, whether it be a special feature for the Goofy movie or gets put on

completely separately on its own. Yeah. We should, it's good. We should say that it's not a finished film. Like it's a work in progress, a work in progress, a whip film. But the thing is, it's gotta be close to done folks. Cause even just from hearing the questions in the audience, everyone thinks their favorite part of a goofy movie needs to be like dissected and highlighted in this movie. And,

And it really doesn't. Like someone said, well, what about the character of... What was that one question that was there? And someone was saying like, well, you really should talk to blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, because they did this one little thing. And then the guy was like, yeah, that's a great idea, but we're not going to do that because it really...

It doesn't fit with our through line. Yeah, it's not what we're trying to say about the movie. Like, we could interview every person that took out the trash while they were making a goofy movie. And they probably do have an interesting story to tell about it. But... So I'm hoping... It's not fitting their narrative. So everyone is giving them... The point I'm trying to make is they kind of alluded to the fact that now everyone that sees it is saying, like, oh, you got to talk to this guy. And, oh, you got to put this and that. And, like, I'm here to tell you, like, this film...

It can't be three hours long. It's finished. Like, it's already a feature-length film. It's done. Like, you want to put in something else, you take something out of there. Yeah, unless they talk to the voice of Powerline. Well, see, so even you have your little angle here. Like, they did say they kind of were trying to track that guy down. What's his name, Kevin? What's his name? Let me see if I wrote it down. He did have a single, didn't he? Or something during the time? Yes.

Yeah. Tevin, but he was on the radio, right? And so they tried to track him down, couldn't quite get him yet. So they're trying to get a few more pieces to put into the puzzle. But at any rate, it was phenomenal. If you're trying to figure out what to do at the expo, maybe go check that out. Consider that, yeah. You're listening to Nostalgia. Carpe Kingdom. Seize the magic. Ha ha ha ha.

All right. So finally, let's talk a little bit about my recent trip to Disneyland. I do have a couple of things to say in conjunction with kind of a piece that came out of Mice Chat a couple of days ago. Did you read that? Did you happen to see that, Julia? Maybe not. I sure didn't. So Mice Chat came out with an article that was actually kind of it was a lot of questions without answers. And they were trying to say, like, why is no one at Disneyland for the Fourth of July weekend? And we were there for the Fourth of July weekend. So did you find that to be true?

It was accurate. Like, it was, you know... Disneyland is always filled with people. Like, you know, it's not filled with people. But you judge it by, like, how long did I wait in line? How busy was it? How long did it take me to walk from Star Tours to... Yeah, or how busy was it to get past pirates in the New Orleans Square crunch? Like, you know, you can judge it by things like that because...

The amount of people that feel like they're in there is always going to be, like, lots of people, right? But, yeah, definitely the wait times were down. Temperatures were actually modest today.

They weren't crazy hot. In fact, we went down to Disneyland to get away from the heat in the Bay Area, which is unusual. I don't think I've ever gone to Disneyland in July to get away from the heat, but that's exactly what we did. And also it was Julia's birthday the weekend before. So we were celebrating her birthday. So at any rate, a couple of things. I don't actually have much to say about that other than to kind of verify that

You know, there's a lot of anticipation for things that are not yet open. That could be kind of part of it. Like Tiana's not quite ready, maybe for the expo. They're crossing their fingers. You know, the Haunted Mansion is not quite ready and the queue won't be done till next year. So they're maybe going to force a queue in there so they can have Haunted Mansion holiday this year. Maybe by the expo. Maybe in time for the expo. I think it's more likely by the time for the Halloween race.

Who knows? But all this stuff is going on that they're trying to kind of get done, but none of it is quite there. So we just decided to go on an eating spree. So we were taking our trip to Disneyland to go eat lots of things, which was kind of convenient. So I'll tell you.

We had the hardest time getting reservations for anything for a party of two. Julia got us a reservation at Trader Sam's so we could go in there, which last time we got to eat inside the building too. So that's kind of two in a row, which is kind of rare because usually we just can't get near the place. But unless you want to wait forever, I guess you can...

I guess you can do is walk up to get into the Trader Sam's maybe, but you'll be probably waiting for if they even take your standby line for quite a while. So at any rate, we started by getting there on the 4th of July because we sold fireworks actually up here in the Bay Area for the 4th of July. And then we finished our time doing that and we rushed down to Disneyland, got there by 7pm.

checked into the Villas at Disneyland Hotel, which is where we have our DVC. And we didn't use DVC points. We just paid for a room and we wanted to try one of the different kind of room. Last time we, of course, stayed in the giant penthouse premier suite and like nothing's going to be like that. So we wanted to see what's it like to just stay in a suite. Right. So was it a suite? No, not even a suite. I don't even know what they called it. No, it was a it was a room that had it wasn't just a room because it had like the kitchenette, like a sink and

A microwave, a fridge, and a cabinet with some dishes. It was very compact. And then it had a queen bed, and then it had a queen pull-out bed. So there was a big sofa. It's really weird how they do the wall pull-out bed. Like, it's decor on the wall, and you pull it down, and it folds the whole sofa underneath it. It's really kind of fascinating and cool. Did you sleep on that, or did you sleep in the regular bed? No, we slept in the regular bed. But it was just kind of interesting.

Right. So four people could sleep. What the heck is this? Like a little family could sleep in there. And we're on the fifth floor. So couldn't really see anything because the villa is a Disneyland hotel. Unless you're on the top penthouse floors, they're behind like Adventureland Tower. So you can't see Disneyland or any Disney parks or anything unless you're up. I don't know how far up you have to be to really see much.

but certainly not from the fifth floor. So we got a pool view. Stupid question. Are the rooms in the villas...

Are they more expensive on par, less expensive than staying in Disneyland Hotel Towers? At the moment, it seems somewhat on par, but our prices for all three days were radically different. Like one day was, I think, $700 or some ridiculous amount. One was $500. And then we added on a last third day at the end, and it was only like $350. So it was just weird. Like, I...

I have no idea what Julia was doing or anything like that to kind of work all this stuff out. But it had nothing to do with our DVC project.

Because we weren't staying with DVC this time. We just booked it through the Disneyland Hotel. All right. So we did try eating at the Palm Breeze Bar. So it's a bar by the pool, but they have quite a bit of seating and they have a very small but competent menu of food. So if you want lunch or something, I had, I think it's called a softlick. That's an interesting way to put that, small but competent. Yeah. Like, because it's useful.

But not like if a ton of people are trying to eat there, you're just not going to be able to get a place to eat or sit or seat. So the Southwest salad is what I had with flat iron steak. It was okay. It was what you would expect. Salad had like a little instead of croutons, it had like a little corn fried corn bowl in the middle. You know what I mean? With your cheese and beans and tomatoes. So you could just smash it into that salad. And then.

The steak was great. So steak was great. And then my iced tea came with two lemons, like Mickey ears. Like even they even Mickey out the ice sheet. Right. So that's kind of awesome. It was just what you'd expect from a poolside bar. Nothing better than that, but certainly competent. Like it was well done. I like it. That's how I'm going to refer to restaurants from now on. It was competent. It was a little bit actually irritating because it was the 4th of July. We got there about 7. So we were sitting down to eat around 8.

And it was so... Like, the entire town of Anaheim was ablaze with fireworks. Like, it sounded literally like what I would imagine a battlefield would sound like, or like a really active thunderstorm, like, in the background. I hate that. I know. But then with the big explosions every...

five or six seconds, like right outside the berm. Because the Disneyland Hotel, especially the villas, here's something to know. The villas are at the back end of the Disneyland Hotel. So you are not 50 yards from the neighbors. So there were fireworks. And their berm is plenty high to completely disguise that fact until the night of 4th of July where there are fireworks shooting everywhere right behind you. So it was kind of exciting to eat dinner with that. It was a little...

But most of the kids and adults running around didn't seem super phased by it. We did then after dinner walk over to the Adventure Lawn at the Disneyland Hotel because they pipe in the fireworks music to the Adventure Lawn every night. So if you want to watch fireworks from the Disneyland Hotel, you can just go to their big lawn, which is where they have wedding receptions and things sometimes. And just watch and hear the actual soundtrack. It is not a great view.

You can mostly see the high fireworks through some palm trees. It is not a great view. But if you're just kind of tired and like, I just still want to do what isn't on fireworks, then that's your moment. They kind of recommend you go to the top of their parking garage and just stand there and watch the fireworks because you see them perfectly from the parking garage of the Disneyland Hotel. There's nothing in between. Do they pipe the music in there, too? No, that's what they do not do. So, you know, if you want to just see beautiful fireworks, you can see right over Galaxy's Edge, which is where they light fireworks.

shoot those things from um and it's beautiful but we wanted to kind of hear it so we because it was the fourth of july and they do a different show it was the it's called the disney's celebrate america a fourth of july concert in the sky and it's mostly just patriotic songs all boom boom boom in a row in a in a montage with beautiful red white blue fireworks so it was super cool um

Have you done 4th of July at Disneyland before? Many, many, many years ago. It might have been even in the 80s, so it doesn't really apply. I will say this about Disneyland and the 4th of July this year.

they didn't really have, so they didn't, I didn't notice they celebrated 4th of July in the park at all. In fact, we went in on July 5th was our first day in the park and Julia wanted the 4th of July commemorative pin because she was sure like every holiday they make a commemorative pin. Like she wanted to find it. And we went to the pin traders at Humphreys, you know, by Soren. No, never heard of that. I don't know. Maybe I haven't, we have this pin that's Mickey and USA or whatever, but it wasn't like, you know, it was just a,

common pin. And she said, no, I mean, do you have anything for this year? And she said, I don't think so. So we were kind of discouraged by that. We did, however, find out on the last day we went into one of the pin traders, I think in Frontierland, actually, and they did have 4th of July specific pins. It might have even been Downtown Disney. I don't remember where we were, but they did have, Disneyland did have 4th of July 2024 pins, so we got one. But like, that's one of the few things they did to sell...

other than their big fireworks show to celebrate the 4th of July at Disneyland. I didn't notice. And maybe, so listen, if I'm wrong, I'm wrong. Cause I wasn't specifically paying attention to this until it hit me the next day, but there was no bunting for the 4th of July, red, white, and blue are a very specific frame of reference for most Americans. And they're right now, red, yellow, and blue at Disneyland for Pixar fan fest. Right. So, um,

everything is red, yellow, and blue. And all down Main Street, the Pixar FanFest banners are up. Like, I get it, but it kind of conflicts with red, white, and blue that you would expect on Main Street USA to have, you know, with all the bunting. In fact, they usually look more Fourth of July just on a normal day than they did this month with FanFest. Don't get me wrong. FanFest was a pretty incredible thing that they're doing. It had some really amazing parts to it, and I'm very excited about that. But, um...

They didn't like it didn't it didn't feel 4th of July. So that was a little bit interesting. But 4th of July is just a day. Like it's just a day. And it went it came it went. We got to see the fireworks. Then we watched the next night the fireworks. The other fireworks show the Pixar Fan Fest fireworks show. Did you see that the fireworks the Pixar fireworks? No. So that's an amazing colorful show. Like all it is is colors everywhere. Yeah.

almost overwhelming, like pinks, purples and greens, like kind of almost so colorful that you, there wasn't, wasn't too thematic. Like the two, the different films would come and go really. The colors didn't shift much. It was just like all color, all the colors, like everywhere, which is still from main street or small world dead center in front of the castle, right in front of the seated area. That's roped off.

Or it's the part before the street. You know what I mean? Just right where the front of the viewing area is in front of you. So that's where I watch the fireworks from.

It was cool. All right. I'm happy for you. Quick, quick rundown here. So like I said, it was an eating trip. So we tried, like I said, the Palm, the Palm, what, Palm Breeze bar? Is that what I said? At the Disneyland Hotel. We ate at Carthay Circle for the first time in many years. Not super thrilled with the service we got. Food was fine. It was okay. I'm not going to write home about it. I had a pork chop and it was like, wasn't super. It was fine.

I feel like you never really like Carthay Circle. You know what? I've had problems with it before.

I would say just check that one off. I would say, well, but I like certain things on the menu, you know. And so the server we had was started out like hilarious, perfectly polite and had a good joke here and there. But you could tell that he had his like stick down and that's what he was going to do. And then he just didn't check on us, just didn't check on us. Like, but he did twice, but they were far too long of intervals for us.

And if he had been a real server, like kind of noticing the table, he would have seen like, oh, they're just sitting there. Let me go see if they need anything. But he came once at like 25 minutes and then once at like 50 minutes. Right. Like his designated check times, which was too late for some stuff we needed. And so, you know, it was fine, but we weren't super much. And he was like a great guy. But who knows how real that greatness was because he didn't come like it was clearly dialed into his mind.

this is what I need to do to get a good tip kind of character. You know what I mean? But it wouldn't be Disneyland if it wasn't a character. Did he get a good tip? We give everyone 20%. It's just, you know, everyone gets 20%. Unless they're

something amazingly special, right? But usually we're tipping on cups and mugs and things, and we just feel like, come on, you know, 20% is plenty with this $40 mug in there. You know what I'm saying? All right. So we did that. Carthy Circle was okay. It was, food was fine. Wasn't it? Like I'm saying, my pork chop was a little thick and a little, I don't want to call it dry. It wasn't dry, but it was

For being so thick, it should have been juicy, in my opinion. And it was certainly not. So, at any rate, Carthy Circle. Then we went to Club 33. Oh, we had Club 33. Oh, I should have said before that. We did get to go to Club 33 Lounge for lunch, which was kind of a super blessing. Like, never can count on that. We never know for sure. That could have been our last time. Every time could be our last time. But we were lucky. And it happened to be the first day of the 10th anniversary of the Les Salons Nouveaux's

existence at the Club 33. So it's 10 years ago last week that it actually was opened, you know, as they built the new club. And so we were there. Yeah. So they had a little display outside in the patio area that you could take a photo with and new little little, you know, street coasters that said 10th anniversary. So it was happy to be there for that day. They are also still celebrating the Matterhorn. So we got our

Mattahorn 65th anniversary. They have like a tiki bowl, kind of a big ceramic bowl. That's the footprint of the Yeti from the front of the Mattahorn. It's really cool. So we got one of those to add to our tiki mug collection from Club 33. So it was fun. We did not eat in the restaurant. We just had lunch in the salon, but they have a pretty good menu. I had, I finally decided I got to break down and try Walt's Chili. Listen,

Their Walt's Chili is this fine china with a little pot of chili with three lumps of cheddar cheese and then three Mickey-oriented sour cream balls and chives dusted on top. Walt Disney would fire someone if they served that to him as his chili. Like, I want it in the can. I think he ate his denizens out of a can, right? So it was not by any means Walt's Chili, but that's what they call it. And also Walt probably paid $2 at the most for his chili, not $2.

Yeah. However, it was Club 33 and I did want to have Walt's Namesake Chili. Yeah. I don't know if I would order that from Club 33. I have had it at the commissary at the Walt Disney Studios. See, that's a little different. That feels like the appropriate place to have it. That's a little different. And almost everywhere associated with Walt. Like the museum used to have Walt's Chili too. So everyone has their version of Walt's Chili. Yep. Which is weird because we know what Walt's Chili was. Like it's not a secret. It was from a can. Yeah. So anyway.

I don't remember what Julie had, but it was much better than... Well, it wasn't bad. Like, it was fine. Is that all you got? You just got chili? Yeah, well, it's chili and a drink. I mean, we were just... Like, we were eating our way through Disneyland. Like, there's more to come. We had Carthay Circle... This was before Carthay Circle. Like, we had Carthay Circle dinner in, like, four hours, so we weren't gonna... Oh, yeah. Oh, okay.

We were and honestly, we were hoping to get an invite there, mostly because we wanted to take a picture by our Mark Davis sketch. We bought that Mark Davis drew. They still have a reproduction in Club 33. So we wanted to take a picture with it. And you have the original. And we have the original. So that was we wanted to put a picture of ourselves together.

Because we have one of Alice Davis in Club 33 with it at any rate. Wanted to get a picture and we did. So that was fine. So then we did also eat at the new DVC member lounge, which is up above Tomorrowland on the big Star Wars... Launch Bay. Launch Bay, yeah. It's not Launch Bay anymore, though, is it? It's taken over by DVC, right? Yeah, it's called Starview Station now. So DVC has this ginormous lounge up in the top area.

Which is – it's actually on a hot day, pretty darn useful. Like, pretty nice. It's weird walking in there. Like, rarely is anyone in the downstairs anymore. So they have this big lobby and there's no one. And you kind of say, are you open? Like, welcome home. You know, it's a DVC mantra. And so then you kind of get a pen if you want or whatever. And then you walk up the stairs.

There's still no one anywhere. You walk into another big welcome lounge. Welcome home. And we're like, are we in the right place? Yeah. And then you walk in and it's usually fairly full of members just kind of lounging because you get free Cheez-Its.

which is, you know, going to not let you starve. If you need something, there's free Cheez-Its. But the best thing is they have free Freestyle. So as much Freestyle Coke as you want. What is that? You know what Freestyle is. Freestyle Coca-Cola. So I got like cream soda with lime or whatever. You know, you can have a hundred different Coca-Cola varieties, right? I don't know if they have one of those over by Humphreys, I think, in DCA, but I don't know.

If they have many freestyles in Disneyland... Is there one in Pimms or am I imagining that? I'm not sure. Both of those places are DCA, right? So I don't know if Disneyland has a freestyle machine anywhere. Not that I can think of. But if you're a DVC member, you can go up there and sit around and drink.

Different varieties of Coca-Cola beverages to your heart's content, which on a hot summer day for me meant four of their little cups with one to go. So I took one full of cream soda and head over right to the Bengal barbecue and had my usual banyan beef skewer with cream soda. An excellent blend. I did not try the cheesy bread by the Matterhorn mashup where you put the meat in the cheesy bread.

I meant to try that, but I did not try that. So maybe next time. Maybe next time I'll try that. After the mango barbecue, we had...

What else do we have? Oh, we stopped also at Jolly Holiday to try the Pixar Fan Fest specialty. So Julia just had the Matterhorn macaroon because we were kind of like, we thought we were going to have kind of a Matterhorn. It's the best thing there anyway. It's pretty good. And we did have like, well, later I'll talk about some more Matterhorn stuff we had. But I had the Silencio Bruno sandwich at Jolly Holiday. Did you try this? No.

No, I haven't been able... I'm not going to make it for Pixar Fest, so tell me all about it. Okay, well, it's just like an Italian toasted roll. But it's just... It's basically like an Italian sandwich you can get at any sub shop. But they diced it all into just chopped up... Like every little bit of the innards is diced, right? So they just stuff it with a stuffing of diced food. And it's...

It doesn't really taste different, but it just is a little bit more easy to eat than a normal sandwich. Yeah, I could see that. Yeah. So it's like chopped ham, chopped salami, chopped pepperoni, chopped pepperoncinis, chopped provolone, chopped onions, chopped lettuce and chopped tomato. Like, and it's all diced into just one smooth, not smooth. It's there. I don't know. Eighth to a quarter inch pieces. Right. But.

it just stuffed into the sandwich and it was so good like it tastes like a normal italian sandwich but you know when you have big pieces of cheese and lettuce and stuff you always get like some of everything in every bite but maybe not everything yeah but this you are almost guaranteed to get every flavor in every bite right so i like that idea that sounds good yeah it was really good super glad we got that um

Where else did we eat? Oh, Napa Rose. You hit all the highlights. Oh, yeah, we did hit the highlights. So we went to Napa Rose for Julia's birthday dinner officially, and it was good. You know, I had the scallop. The scallop changes there often. It was sweet this time, a little savory, but it had marmalade, tangerine marmalade.

and then some other different things on top of the scallop. Do you like scallops, Julia? I'm not a seafood person, so I've never actually tried them. Okay, that's fine. It had tomato and basil, but also tangerine, so a little savory, a little sweet. It's really good because their scallops, diver scallops, are huge. They're huge scallops, and they're always very just the most subtle flavor, so everything that is added to the scallop really makes it or breaks it.

Julia had the frazzoletti pasta with Chad Prosciutto and artichoke hearts. We've been on an artichoke kick lately, so she wanted to try that. It was really good. They have a new kind of bread service, which is sourdough, but it's like in rolls, like a one big bun that you pull apart. And they serve it with like a butter foam instead of just like butter. So the butter just like... Did you say butter foam? Kind of. So it just smears on there and it's instantly in the bread.

Right. So that was tasty. Like whole cloves of garlic fell out when we pulled the bread apart. So it was really good. I had the filet. Their current seasonal filet is a black Angus filet with poblano and it had blackberries on top. It just was kind of sweet, but not really sweet. The blackberries themselves were sweet, but it's more of a glaze. It was really, you know, it's filet. It's going to be really good. Right.

And then they brought Julia a kind of complimentary birthday dessert, which was super fun. So a couple of things I want to say, since this is an eating trip, we also ate it. Like I said, the Trader Sam's inside. We ordered the O-O-A because we didn't have the O-O-A bowl. O-O-A is a drink for two. And there's a whole show with the O-O-A. So if you buy the O-O-A.

Then your waiter or waitress or your waiting person will walk over and they will put it in front of you and they will scream to the whole crowd.

bar um what's going to happen here and most of the time there's enough regulars in that place that everyone knows how to join in the fun and they are all start kind of chanting oh oh oh oh oh oh and then like their storm starts in the picture windows and thunder and lightning happen and she comes over and she lights fire to some sugar cubes on your drink and then there's

bowls of cinnamon on top and you take a little cinnamon and you throw it in the fire and it makes big flashes of fire. And then finally the gods have been

appeased i suppose and she pushes the sugar cubes into the drink to extinguish it and the lights come back on oh and meanwhile the bartenders are shooting water at the crowds with hand spritzers right they're shooting water out at the crowd to simulate the waves in the storm that are going on because the gods have been disturbed by us ordering an oh what so um

That was cool. We got the Aoa bowl to take home, so that was fun. And we had... What do you call tempura? Tempura bean. Green beans. Make the Aoa go down. Last thing I'll mention is...

in terms of eating is that they do have special Dole Whips for the Matterhorn 65th anniversary, maybe still. They had them last week when we were there. And they come with these amazing little plastic tumblers. Like, it's not the most...

sturdy thing. Like it's not maybe going to be stand up to your kids drinking out of it all week long forever. But it's a it's like a take it's take home Tumblr souvenir. It's not just a throwaway plastic cup. Right. So the difference between a normal Dole Whip and the Matterhorn's

specialty Dole Whip is that the Matterhorn Dole Whip uses coconut water instead of pineapple juice. That sounds so good. Was it delicious? Yeah, and it has shredded blue coconut on top to make the snow of the mountain. It's really cool. I highly recommend it. You can get it also with, of course, rum.

If you so desire. That ruins it for me. You don't have to, though. They come both ways. Just coconut water. All right. So that was us eating. That was our eating our way through Disneyland. So I have a question for you. Since you're talking about food and working your way through food, have you tried the chocolate chip cookies yet? No. Are they great?

It's my favorite thing. All right. I should have tried to calculate. Okay. It's my favorite thing behind...

The dark chocolate dipped pineapple spirit, which I possibly will never have again because it's too popular. Okay. Well, so the only actual snacks we bought, I don't consider my Banyan Beef Skura snack. I bought a Big Deal Pickle. I bought a 4th of July themed Mickey Rice Krispie Treat Head because it was red, white, and blue stripes and beautiful.

And we bought some popcorn. Oh, no, no. And we bought in Toontown the little blueberry donuts that they sell inside of the Nothing Can Stop Us Now bird. What's that orange bird? Oh, the chewy bird? Yeah, yeah. Inside of that, you get six donuts. They're more like blueberry muffins with frosting, actually. Did you try these?

I've tried the donuts. I don't remember blueberries. Then maybe this is different because it's distinctly... I think it might be different. It has fruity pebbles on top. Does that sound familiar? Is it like a breakfast version? Well, that's obviously the... No, you have it all day long. But that's obviously the idea here because it was... Or to the flavor profile, right? Yeah. Is blueberry muffins and fruity pebbles. It was...

but a little too sweet. And also I was like, when Julia said, do you want to share this with me? I said, well, okay. I don't really like sweets that much, but I wanted one of the donuts. It doesn't really taste like a donut. It tastes like a blueberry muffin. That's too sweet. Right. So I don't think I've had those. I've had the donuts there, but they're more cinnamony. Yeah. So it wasn't that. It wasn't that. I don't know if these are regular all the time donuts or whatever, but anyway, it was okay, but we, it wasn't for me. And,

Anyway, that wraps up my food tour this time. I have a tummy ache. Yeah, I mean, it was spread out over two and a half days. So, you know, but it was still it was a lot like we didn't kind of expect all those things to fall together as they did, you know, all week long. And so it was kind of extra amazing opportunities to eat in all our favorite places. But it was super cool. So thank you for listening, Julia.

Well, thank you for sharing, Jeff. Oh, you know what? Heck, I'm going to read one letter.

Heck. We got a heck. Why not? Okay. I'm just going to read one email quick. We've gotten a couple. Maybe I'll do an email show again soon. But this is from Brianna. And it just kind of warmed my heart. So I'm going to read it to you. So Brianna wrote. And the reason it warmed my heart, well, you'll find out. She said, Hi, Jeff. Just got done listening to your latest podcast episode about Inside Out. Haven't gotten to see the movie yet, but I'm planning on it soon. I also just want to say...

that I came across your podcast a couple months ago and I love it. Capitals. Capitals love it. I actually started listening from the very beginning. I'm on episode 70, lol, and it's really neat and absolutely crazy to see how much everything has changed since 2009. From the actual parks themselves to downtown Disney to prices of everything back then. Yikes. To old rides that are no longer there to new upcoming rides like The Little Mermaid and Cars Land. Keep up the podcast because they're great, very enjoyable. I'm going to

My personal favorite from all their episodes are the Haunted Mansion moments. Sincerely, a new fan. Right? A new fan, Brianna. So, Brianna, thank you so much for listening. Brianna, in case you don't know, Jeff has another podcast dedicated to Doom Buggies.

And all things Haunted Mansion. So you should go listen to the archives of that, too. I do. And it's called the Doom Buggies podcast. You'll find it wherever wherever your fine podcasts are distributed. And we're going to have another podcast, another episode of Doom Buggies coming out ASAP. Hear that, Julia? ASAP. I mean, I'm on the edge of my seat.

All right. So you can get a hold of me if you're like Brianna and you're a new listener or an old listener or anyone that wants to talk back to me. Want to tell me how bad I did? You don't have to only leave iTunes reviews. You can even write to me. It might not get read on the show. Maybe it will be like you never know what I'm going to do. Constructive criticism is good.

Yeah, I'll take all your thoughts. So, you know, it's also weird. I'm just I know I sound like an old man, like get off my lawn. Only it's kind of the opposite of that. But we have always on my nostalgia from day one said, like, send us your honest reviews. I've never heard another podcast in my life. Say, send us your honest reviews. They all say leave a five star review.

Like, of course I want you to leave a five-star review. But also, if you think I'm worth one star... You want to leave an honest review. Leave a one-star review and tell me why. Like, tell me why. But don't be mean. There's a difference between mean and constructive. I am...

I am speaking for Mousetalgia. I'm OK. I can handle me. I'm speaking as a fan of yours. I appreciate you, Julia. But I can handle mean. Like, I want to know what people think so I can know how to tailor the show. Of course, everyone wants to do better. But we've always said that on Mousetalgia for 17 years. Like, send us your honest...

And feedback. Like, I would love to hear it. Anyway, you can get a hold of me if you have any of that honest feedback at comments at Nostalgia.com. Comments at Nostalgia.com. I would love to hear from you. If you feel so inclined to support Nostalgia and what I do here, go to NostalgiaPlus.com and you can see our Patreon information there.

Love to have you join us there. And I think that's it for now. So I'm hopefully going to get another show out soon. We're going to talk about Kristen just got back from Alani. So she'll have some things to say. I'm sure. And I also have a very good friend who just got back. She was at the first day of the grand opening of the new land at Disney Sea in Tokyo. So very excited to bring your report about that. So lots of good stuff coming up on my nostalgia. So stay tuned.

Find Julia over at the Pal Around podcast and also Sibling Library, right? Yeah. Sibling Library. You got it. Not Sibling Rivalry. Sibling Library. Her two other podcasts. They're both exceptional. Highly recommended. All right. So without any further ado, Carpe Kingdom. Seize the magic. And goodbye, everybody. Take a breath, Jeff. Bye. Bye.
