台灣黑熊Mulas返抵山林 Mulas Returns to the Wild

A young black bear is taking us on a journey through the wild.

Mulas is a Formosan black bear.

Formosan black bears are black all over, except for a white "V" shape on their chest.

Taiwan is the only place in the world where you can find a Formosan black bear in the wild.

Mulas was found alone in the forests of Taitung when she was just a few months old.

The people who found her waited 10 days to see if her mother would come.

But Mulas' mother never came, and Mulas was all alone.

當時大家發現幼熊落單,花了10天等待看母熊會不會回來,可是到最後熊媽媽並沒有回來帶走Mulas.

So people took care of her.

They gave her the name "Mulas", which means "strong and hardworking" in the indigenous Bunun language (布農語).

And they taught her how to look for food and how to live in the wild.

Then in May last year, they put a GPS tracking collar (衛星追蹤頸圈) on Mulas, and then released (野放) her back into the wild.

It has now been almost a year and a half.

Many people asked what Mulas has been doing. Is she okay?

Now the Forestry Bureau (林務局) has an answer.

They say Mulas' GPS collar has helped them see what she has been doing.

Mulas had the collar on for 405 days.

They say Mulas has traveled more than 314 kilometers.

And she climbed what's equal to (等於) 100 flights of stairs every day!

When she first went back to the wild, Mulas walked around and explored a lot, to get to know her new home.

By wintertime, she found a warm cliff (懸崖) facing south, with water to drink close by.

Then in late June, officials opened her collar, and took it back to look at all the data.

The Forestry Bureau says this is the first time ever that a Formosa black bear has been tracked in the wild for such a long time.

They made a short movie about Mulas and what happened to her.

Officials hope all this information will help people better understand Formosan black bears.

台東林區管理處希望Mulas回家的故事,可以讓大家更了解台灣黑熊。

小男孩散步撿到乳齒象牙齒化石 Boy Finds Rare Fossil on Family Walk

When you go out walking, do you ever pick things up off the ground?

Things like shiny rocks, funny-looking leaves, or sticks?

One young boy in the US found something really special.

6-year-old Julian was taking a walk with his family in Michigan.

Suddenly he felt something on his foot.

He picked it up, and thought it kind of looked like a tooth.

His parents let him take it home.

After they got home, Julian's parents started thinking the rock looked like a tooth too.

They asked paleontologists (古生物學家) to take a closer look.

And the experts say it really is a fossil of a tooth!

The fossil is the tooth of a young mastodon (乳齒象).

Mastodons are like mammoths (長毛象), but a little smaller.

They lived about 12,000 years ago.

Mastodons lived in groups, like elephants do now.

They lived in the forest and ate plants.

Experts say finding a fossil like this is rare (稀有).

Julian and his family are donating the tooth to a museum.

And the museum says it will give Julian and his family a special tour to thank them.

六歲的Julian跟家人散步時意外撿起一顆一萬兩千多年老的乳齒象臼齒化石,讓他開始考慮長大後也許可以當古生物學家。
