Hey there, and welcome to News Bites!

I'm Trevor Tortomasi…

And I'm Paz Bueno.

In today's news:

Computex Returns as a hybrid event, Coldplay powers a concert with help from fans, and dogs in Japan ride a special bullet train.

All that and more, coming up next.

Computex Returns as a Hybrid Event

"Hybrid" is a word that means the combination of two different things.

A hybrid plant or animal is one whose parents are different species (種類).

And a hybrid car has a gasoline engine (汽油引擎) and an electric motor (電動馬達).

But what about an event that is hybrid?

Well, because of the pandemic, more and more events have also become hybrid.

That means that you can attend them in person or online.

And this year, one of the biggest technology trade shows (科技貿易展覽會) in the world went hybrid.

Computex is usually held in Taipei every year, from around the end of May to early June. Computex

But in 2020, it was canceled because of COVID-19.

And in 2021, the event was completely online.

The reason they used the hybrid event is because many people can't visit Taiwan yet.

The organizers wanted as many people as possible to join, because it is a very important time for technology companies to announce their plans and products

The in-person event was held for three days, from May 27th to May 30th.

But if you want to visit the virtual event for free, you can visit the Computex Cyberworld website until June 30th.

Coldplay Powers Concerts with Human Energy

People love going to concerts (演唱會)!

Seeing an artist play your favorite song live is a special experience.

And these days, more and more shows have fancy lights, lasers (雷射), and giant TV screens (巨大的電視螢幕).

But, because they use so much energy, these big concerts aren't very environmentally friendly.

However, the band Coldplay wants to use power from their fans, to help reduce energy use (節能) for their shows.

So, for their 2022 world tour, the band had some creative ideas

They installed special dance floors that capture the energy from people moving.

There are competitions before the show to see which fans can make the most energy.

They also have special bikes that can generate electricity (發電).

As the fans ride the bikes, they power parts of the show.

Coldplay's bass guitar player (貝斯吉他手) says that fans will like the changes since it's "a kind of opportunity (機會) to do something fun".

The band wants to reduce the amount of CO2 (減少二氧化碳) they produce by 50% for this tour.

In 2019, they announced that they would stop touring, because it was bad for the environment.

But they changed their mind (改變心意), after they had the idea to make their tours more sustainable.

Dogs Enjoy a Special Ride on a Bullet Train

In Taiwan, people take their pets everywhere.

Some dogs will ride on motorcycles with their owners.

And you can see many people carrying their cats or small dogs in special backpacks (背包) or strollers (嬰兒車).

But, pets aren't usually allowed on trains, unless they are in a cage (籠子).

That's why it was a special day for 21 fur babies (毛小孩)!

In Japan, dogs and their owners were allowed to ride a bullet train together in a special train car.

And the dogs were allowed to sit on the seats, without a cage.

The seats were covered in plastic, to protect them from fur, or in case a dog had an accident.

These lucky dogs and their owners rode the bullet train from Tokyo (東京) to Karuizawa (輕井澤), one hour away.

The trip was part of a trial run (試營運) by the Japan Railways company.

They want to organize more pet-friendly holidays (寵物友好旅行) in the future, to attract pet owners.

So, in today's News Bites:

Computex has returned to Taipei this year.

It was canceled in 2020, and held online in 2021, because of COVID-19.

It was hosted as a hybrid event this year, because many people still can't travel to Taiwan.

And,

The band Coldplay wants to make their tours more sustainable.

So, their shows now have special dance floors, and bikes that make power.

They hope to encourage fans to be more "green", by making it fun.

And,

21 lucky dogs got to ride on the bullet train in Japan.

Normally, dogs must be in a cage to ride on trains.

But the dogs and their owners took a comfortable one-hour trip, from Tokyo to Karuizawa, in a special car.
