Hundreds of New Species Found on Green Island

You may have visited many parts of Taiwan.

But, there is actually a lot more still to discover.

In fact, scientists have just found hundreds of new species (物種) on Green Island.

Starting from 2020, they started looking for and counting wildlife on the island.

They searched for plants, mammals, insects and crustaceans.

They found more than 400 species on the island.

And what's even more amazing, is that over half are new species never seen before on Green Island.

The scientists counted 229 species of insects, and 115 were new discoveries (發現) for the island.

One of the new insects, is Tsada's giant stick insect.

Scientists also found Formosan flying foxes

These bats are the biggest bats found in Taiwan.

Their wings are about 1 meter wide when spread out.

They have brown fur, and eat mostly fruit.

The bats are very important for the environment, because they help fruit seeds get to new places and grow.

Scientists hope learning more about these amazing creatures will encourage everyone to help protect them.

The Most Mispronounced Words of 2021

Sometimes, you see a new English word…

And it just make you want to scratch your head!

Well, this happens to people who speak English all the time!

In fact, a U.S. company has put out a list of the most mispronounced words of 2021.

The company says many people, even news anchors (新聞主播), have a hard time saying these words.

There are 13 words on the list.

Here are some of the trickiest ones.

Cheugy ("CHOO-gee") is a new word, for things that used to be cool, but aren't anymore.

It's most often used by Gen Z (Z世代).

Next, here's one that everyone around the world has been saying, even here in Taiwan: Omicron ("AH-muh-kraan", "OH-mee-kraan").

It's the COVID-19 variant that was first found in November last year.

It is actually the 15th letter of the Greek alphabet.

Then, some of the words on the list aren't actually English.

Dalgona ("tal-goh-NAH") is a candy from South Korea.

It became more famous around the world, after it was in an episode of the Netflix hit show, "Squid Game".

Famous people's names were on the list too.

Singer Billie Eilish ("EYE-lish"), and tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas ("STEH-fuh-nohs TSEE-tsee-pas") were both challenging (有挑戰性) for many people.

And the names of cryptocurrencies (加密貨幣) left people puzzled too.

Dogecoin ("DOHJ-coin") and ethereum ("ih-THEE-ree-umm") were hard for some.

Do you know how to say all of these?

A young boy who is already a hero, got to spend a day with a Marvel superhero.

Last year, 7-year-old Bridger Walker saved his younger sister in a dog attack.

The boy was bitten many times on his face and head, and he was badly hurt.

But he kept his 4-year-old sister safe.

Then this year, the stars of "Spider-Man: No Way Home" invited Bridger to visit the set (片場) of the movie!

Bridger's dad says Tom Holland, Zendaya, and everyone made their family feel like stars.

Bridger got his own Spider-Man mask.

And he got to try out "web-swinging" with Spider-Man.

He held on to Tom, in the full Spider-Man costume (戲服), and the two flew high up into the air.

Bridger's dad says the trip was a "dream-come-true adventure".

Bridger
