Shownotes Transcript

Hello everybody, and welcome to a new episode of News Bites!

I'm Trevor Tortomasi…

And I'm Nancy Sun.

In today's news:

The Lion King comes to Taiwan, a lost ship is finally found, and a very special lamb is born.

All that and more, coming up next.

Lion King Musical Coming to Taiwan

In 1994, Disney made a movie about a family of lions in Africa.

It was called "The Lion King" (獅子王), and it became very famous.

It's so famous, in fact, that people have been performing the story on stage (這齣戲劇多次搬上舞台), since the year 1997.

And this summer (夏天), it's coming back to Taiwan!

In this version (版本) of The Lion King, there is lots of dancing and singing.

This kind of performance is called a "musical" (音樂劇).

The actors will move around the stage in costume, singing new songs, as well as old songs from the original movie.

The last time The Lion King musical was performed in Taiwan was in the year 2019.

The show was also shown across the world, in at least 21 different countries.

And it was seen by more than 100 million people worldwide!

Then, because of the pandemic (疫情), there weren't many stage productions (舞台劇) for a couple years.

That's because people couldn't gather in large groups, so it was very difficult to plan a show for a live audience.

But now, with big shows like The Lion King returning to Taiwan, it may be the beginning of our recovery (恢復)!

The Lion King musical will run for 25 shows in Taiwan, from June through July.

It will show in the Taipei Arena (小巨蛋), and then later at the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (衛武營國家藝術文化中心).

Don't miss this opportunity to see one of the world's most famous stories on stage!

Ship Lost for 100 Years Finally Found

Our planet Earth has a surface (表面) of around 70% water, and 30% land (陸地).

And for thousands of years, humans were able to explore (探險) much of the land.

But until about one hundred years ago, there was one giant continent (有一塊大陸) that was still unexplored.

It's called Antarctica (南極洲), and on most maps, it's at the bottom of the world!

So, after the first person in history stepped onto Antarctica in the year 1821, many people started planning expeditions (遠征) to see more of it.

Finally, in the year 1915, one expedition ran into trouble.

A group of explorers sailed a ship named "Endurance" (耐力) to Antarctica, but the ship became trapped (困住) in the ice.

The explorers were afraid they would die, but the ship's captain led them all on a long walk to safety.

And every single person survived

The Endurance sank into the ocean, and for 107 years, people thought it was lost forever.

But this month, we've found it again!

It was found over three kilometers under the water's surface (水面).

Scientists say the ship was beautifully preserved (保存), and gives them a lot to study.

Plus, it's proof (證明) of an amazing story of human exploration.

And as long as we have stories, nothing is lost forever!

Lamb Born with Five Legs

Most people have two legs each…

Many animals have four legs, and most bugs (昆蟲) have six or eight…

These are all even numbers, and keep animals balanced.

Well, one exception (例外) to this balance is a baby sheep, also called a lamb, that was born in England last month.

This lamb was born with five legs!

It has four normal legs, just like most sheep, but it also has one coming out its side.

Farmers aren't sure why it happened, but they say they haven't seen something like this in at least 25 years.

They also say the fifth leg might have to be removed (截肢) in the future, but that the lamb will be fine.

Does it sound scary or weird?

Well the lamb seems to be running around and playing just like normal

So if the sheep don't think it's scary, why should we?

So, in today's News Bites:

"The Lion King" musical is returning to Taiwan this summer.

A musical is a performance where the actors sing and dance many parts of the story.

The show will run for 25 shows in Taiwan, from June through July.
