Hello everybody, and welcome to a new episode of News Bites!

I'm Ryan Drillsma…

And I'm Trevor Tortomasi.

In today's news:

Taiwan's vaccine abroad, orangutan art, and Elton John glasses.

All that and more, coming up next.

高端疫苗 澳洲初步過關 Medigen Passes First Step in Australia

Over the past year, Taiwan has been helping a lot of countries deal with (對付) the effects of the pandemic.

At the start of the pandemic, Taiwan donated (捐獻) millions of face masks to Canada, Brazil, Slovakia (斯洛伐克), and many other places around the world.

It has donated medical equipment (醫療設備) to Japan and Palau.

過去一年,台灣幫助很多國家對付疫情。台灣把數百萬個口罩捐給加拿大、巴西、斯洛伐克等國家,還把醫療設備捐給日本、帛琉等等。

Taiwan may soon be helping out another country in a different way.

In August, Taiwan started giving people here its home-made COVID-19 vaccine, called Medigen (高端).

Now, the vaccine may soon be given to people in Australia.

In different countries, vaccines have to pass different steps (階段) to show they are safe and effective (有效) for people to use.

Australia has five steps.

But it will agree to receive (接受) a vaccine for two years after it passes three steps.

The Medigen vaccine has just passed the first one.

Medigen will now give clinical data (臨床實驗資料) to the Australian government to show the vaccine works.

The company says it is now bringing together (收集) all the documents (文件) it needs to give the Australian government.

Let's hope that Medigen is successful (成功的) in the next step.

And Taiwan can continue helping people fight the pandemic around the world!

高端公司正在收集必要文件交給澳洲政府,希望疫苗可以成功過下一關,讓台灣繼續幫助所有的國家抵抗疫情。

環境變化 會影響紅毛猩猩畫畫 Environment Inspires Orangutan Art

I think I'm going to draw a picture… but what to draw?

My family, friends, robots, monsters… or sunny skies and rainbows?

I like to get inspiration (靈感) from the things around me, or how I'm feeling.

But apparently, it's not just people that look to their thoughts or their environment (環境) to get inspiration when they draw.

Orangutans do it, too!

Orangutans (紅毛猩猩) are great apes (人猿) from Indonesia (印尼) and Malaysia (馬來西亞), with orange fur.

Did you know they could draw?

A zoo in Japan gave some orangutans crayons to draw with.

And their drawings were not random (隨便的).

Different orangutans had different styles (畫法). And they changed with the orangutan's mood.

Researchers at the zoo looked at 790 drawings from orangutans.

The researchers think different things in the orangutans' environment could have influenced (影響) how they draw.

One orangutan at the Zoo, called Molly, really likes drawing.

The researchers said she would often take an hour to finish one picture.

They said in the summer, she would draw more colorful loops (圈), and this could mean she was happy because of nicer weather or more visitors to the zoo.

Her drawings in winter were different.

I guess apes are smarter than we think.

And they like to do things for fun, just like us!
