Hello everybody, and welcome to a new episode of News Bites!

I'm Ryan Drillsma…

And I'm Clifford Chu…

In today's news:

Scooter helmet art, a pancake race, and and actress helps out a country in need.

All that and more, coming up next.

Man Turns Scooter Helmets into Art

It's always important to remember that safety comes first when you're out on the road.

Lots of people in Taiwan drive scooters (機車) to get to places.

You may have ridden one with your parents or grandparents.

But what's one thing you should always remember when riding a scooter?

That's right! You need to wear a helmet (安全帽).

Helmets are important because they can protect your head if you have an accident.

They have an important purpose (目的), but… I think they can look pretty cool, too!

You can buy helmets in lots of different colors and designs (款式).

But have you ever thought of them as art?

Well, one man called Lee An in Taichung does.

He makes custom helmets for people using his skills as an artist.

Lee An has his own studio (工作室) where he does lots of custom painting work.

If something is custom-made, it means it is made especially for one person, and they chose how they wanted it to be made.

Lee An paints both motorcycles and helmets.

But neither come cheap!

He painted a picture of Harley Quinn (哈莉·奎茵) from the DC Comic world on a helmet for one customer… and that customer paid 30 thousand NT!

But having Lee paint your motorbike might cost 100 thousand dollars, or even more.

Hmm… maybe in the future… when I have more money… and I can drive.

American Woman wins British Pancake Race

Ready… set… go!

I love a good race.

Competition (比賽) is exciting!

But what are these competitors (參賽者) holding?

Well, they're frying pans (煎鍋). And do you know what's in the frying pans?

Bacon?

Close! It's… pancakes (鬆餅)!

But why?

March 1 this year was a special Christian holiday known as Shrove Tuesday.

It's the day before many Christians sacrifice (犧牲) something in the six weeks before Easter. Usually this means giving up eating something they enjoy…like chocolate.

And on Shrove Tuesday, it's tradition (傳統) to eat pancakes.

But one town in the UK called Olney has a slightly different tradition… they race with the pancakes first!

People must carry pancakes in a frying pan in a 380 meter race - the fastest person wins!

But the contestants must also flip (翻) their pancake in the air at the beginning and end of the race.

This year, the winner was actually a woman from the US.

She won with a time of one minute and seven seconds.

The Olney pancake race has been happening for over 600 years, but it became an international competition in 1950.

Both kids and adults join it!

Hmm… maybe if I'm in England next Shrove Tuesday, I can try, too!

American Actress Mila Kunis Helps Her Home Country

Did you know that American actress Mila Kunis was born in Ukraine?

It should be no surprise then, that she is helping her home country by raising money (募款) to help Ukraine's refugees (難民).

Kunis and her husband Aston Kutcher are trying to raise (募集) $30 million dollars.

They donated (捐獻) 3 million dollars out of their own pocket (自己掏腰包), which is about 10 percent of the total.

When she announced the campaign (活動) to raise money, Kunis said she sees herself as American.

But she said she has never felt more proud to be Ukrainian.

After three days, Kunis raised more than $16 million dollars.
