Hello everybody, and welcome to a new episode of News Bites!

I'm Ryan Drillsma…

And I'm Nancy Sun.

In today's news:

Ethiopia smashes the Taipei Marathon, young people snap award-winning pics, and an award show scraps gendered categories. .

All that and more, coming up next.

Ethiopian Runners Top Taiwan Marathon Table

Ready… set… go!

That's the sound you will hear at the start of a marathon (馬拉松)…

…or maybe something like that.

Anyway, the Taipei Marathon took place on Sunday, December 19th.

Over 8,000 people joined the race.

A marathon is a very long race… 42.195 kilometers long to be precise.

Most people will finish a marathon in about four or five hours.

Could you imagine running non-stop (一直不停) for that long?

Any time under four hours is considered fast.

But some athletes (運動員), who are considered elite runners (傑出的跑者), can finish a marathon in under three hours, or even in under two!

Twelve elite runners joined the Taipei marathon this year.

There are usually more, but not too many elite runners joined the race because of the pandemic.

The champions (冠軍) of both the male and female divisions of the race were from Ethiopia.

Demeke Kasaw Biksegn won the men's race in a time of two hours, 11 minutes, 42 seconds.

In the women's division (女子組), Alemtsehay Asefa Kasegn crossed the finish line after two hours, 30 minutes and 44 seconds.

That's super fast!

Taiwan's top runner in the marathon, Chou Ting-yin, crossed the finish line after two hours 23 minutes and 33 seconds.

There was also a half-marathon that day for people that just wanted to run around 21 kilometers.

Still, that's very far, do you think you could do it?

The RSPCA Young Photographer Awards

Hey! Stop taking pictures of me!

There's so much beautiful nature you could be taking pictures of instead.

A lot of kids these days have phones, or at least something they can use to take pictures.

And people love taking pictures.

So a charity (慈善組織) in the U.K. created a photography competition for young people.

The charity is called the Royal Society for the Protection and Care of Animals, or the RSPCA.

The RSPCA created the Young Photographer Awards to not only encourage kids to take more pictures, but also encourage them to appreciate (享受) the nature around them.

The Young Photographer Awards has different categories (類別), such as "small world" for tiny creatures, and "Picture Perfect Pets" for well… pets.

It also has categories for different ages.

The winning pictures from the 2021 awards are now online.

The top prize went to a boy called Ben Hancock-Smith for a creepy close-up of a wasp spider hanging out in a web.

A 16-year-old boy won the "Portfolio" category for his pictures of rats hiding (躲避) in different places.

Another young person submitted a close-up picture of a stingray (魟魚) showing its "face".

The winners got 100 pounds (英鎊) to spend on the website Amazon.

There are so many cool and interesting creatures here in Taiwan.

So why don't you take your camera out into nature next time and snap a few pictures?

Brit Awards Scraps Gendered Prizes

A music award show in the U.K. has scrapped male and female categories in favor of gender-neutral awards.

If an award is gender-neutral it means both men and women can win it.

Some women were concerned mostly male artists would be nominated for Brit Awards.

But more female artists have been nominated than in any year over the past 10 years.

Adele, Dua Lipa and Olivia Rodrigo could all win multiple prizes.

The Brit Awards said it wanted to be more inclusive.

Some people, like the singer Sam Smith, say they are not male or female.

Now such artists don't need to worry about which category they fit in.
