Snow Falls on Jade Mountain
What's that white, fluffy stuff falling from the sky?
Oh, it's snow!
If you live in a big city like Taipei, Kaohsiung or Taichung you might have never seen snow before.
It doesn't really snow in Taiwan's cities, because it's too hot!
But it does on Taiwan's mountains.
The tops of mountains are high in the sky.
The higher you get, the thinner the air is.
And when the air is thinner, it cannot absorb (吸收) heat as well, so there is less evaporation (蒸發).
The water in the air turns into snow and it falls on the mountaintop.
Taiwan's tallest mountain, Jade Mountain (玉山), saw its first snow of 2022 on January 7th.
Some people took videos, and in the videos you can see the whole place covered (整地覆蓋) in a blanket of white, fluffy snow.
Jade Mountain is exactly 3,952 meters above sea level, which is why it gets so cold.
But snow fell on another mountain recently that is not as high.
Hehuanshan in Central Taiwan also saw its first snow of 2022 on January 7th.
But there, snow fell for just a few minutes in the morning.
It didn't quite leave a white blanket like on Jade Mountain.
In fact, it melted (融化) very quickly!
If you decide to go to see the snow, you need to remember to wear very warm clothes, it's much colder than it is in the city!

Speaking of snow…
Have you ever done any snow sports? Like skiing (雙版滑雪)… or snowboarding (單板滑雪)?
One snowboarder has broken the internet recently… that means she has become very popular and her videos have been shared a lot online.
What's so special about this snowboarder? She might be the youngest one ever!
Wang Yuji is just 11 months old.
She lives in China.
And she is impressing everybody (令人刮目相看) with her snowboarding skills!
Wang Yuji can't even walk yet. But she can balance (保持平衡) on a snowboard extremely well.
Videos show her spinning around as she boards down snowy mountains.
She first learned to snowboard while she was on vacation.
Her mother said, "At the beginning, we thought we'd just let her try…"
"Once she was on the board she would squat, pat her legs, and start giggling, so we could tell she's not afraid at all."
Wang Yuji
Yuji cannot control the speed (控制速度) she goes at or the direction (方向) she goes in; she's still too young.
Her mom and dad always stand close by to make sure she is safe.
Yuji has been snowboarding at the place the 2022 Winter Olympics will take place.
People online have joked that she should compete in them.
Her parents think it would be great for Yuji to snowboard professionally in the future… if she still wants to.

World number one tennis player Novak Djokovic has been fighting deportation from Australia.
He went to the country to compete in the Australian Open, which is the country's biggest tennis competition.
But he may not compete because he is not vaccinated against COVID-19.
Djokovic said he has a medical exemption from being vaccinated.
But the Australian government said the visa he was on does not allow medical exemptions.
The Australian public was not happy Djokovic was going to compete.
Lots of people thought he should get the COVID vaccine first.
Djokovic said he was "opposed to vaccines" in 2020, before they were available.
But later he said he was "not an expert" and would keep "an open mind".
