Many artists reuse canvases in order to control the number of paintings they produce. A vast majority ofVan Gogh’s self-portraits were painted during his stay in Paris. He was short on money, so he reused canvases that he had used for other works in Netherlands. X-rays can also be used to detect traces of minerals and other elements within the paint.
