Al Capone, also known as "Scarface," was one of America's most notorious gangsters during the Prohibition era. Rising to power as the ruthless leader of the Chicago Outfit, he built a criminal empire through bootlegging, gambling, and prostitution, amassing a fortune in the process. While he presented himself to the public as a legitimate businessman and philanthropist, he was feared for his violent tendencies and no-nonsense approach to crime.Capone's most infamous act was the St. Valentine's Day Massacre of 1929, in which seven members of a rival gang were executed in cold blood. Though he was widely suspected of orchestrating the massacre, he was never convicted, and the crime remained an unsolved mystery.Despite his ability to evade conviction for most of his criminal activities, Capone eventually became the target of federal authorities—who focused on his finances rather than his violent acts. In 1931, he was convicted of tax evasion and sentenced to 11 years in prison, marking the downfall of his empire.Imprisoned and suffering from advanced syphilis, Capone's health quickly deteriorated. He was released on parole in 1939 but lived out his remaining years in relative obscurity. Al Capone died in 1947 at his Florida home, a man whose legend would outlive his crimes.
