Pirate treasure legends are famous, but in reality, pirates were more likely to spend their loot quickly than bury it. One popular tale is the Treasure of Lima, allegedly hidden by Captain William Thompson on Cocos Island. Another involves Captain Kidd, who buried some treasure on Gardiners Island, though stories of a Caribbean cache remain unproven. Blackbeard’s ship, Queen Anne’s Revenge, ran aground in 1718, but little treasure was found, suggesting the crew offloaded their plunder before the wreck. In contrast, the Whydah Galley, discovered off Massachusetts, yielded a significant treasure, making it the only authenticated pirate ship ever found.
