The plague, caused by Yersinia pestis bacteria, is primarily transmitted through flea bites from infected rodents. It can manifest in three forms: bubonic, septicemic, and pneumonic plague. When caught early, antibiotics are highly effective in treating the disease, but if left untreated, it can be fatal. While there is no available vaccine for plague in the U.S. at present, several are under development. Efforts to prevent outbreaks focus on reducing rodent habitats and using flea control measures. The disease remains endemic in certain regions worldwide, making the development of a vaccine crucial, especially with the growing concern of antibiotic-resistant strains.
