Claiming that the U.S. does most of the work in the region, Trump suggests the name change as a symbol of American dominance. However, the Gulf is shared by the U.S., Mexico, and Cuba, complicating the idea. This isn’t the first time the name has been proposed, as a former U.S. Representative once joked about it. Along with the Gulf renaming, Trump has floated ideas like annexing Canada, buying Greenland, and taking control of the Panama Canal, raising expansionist concerns.
