New Generations sketch! It has been a while because in the first half of the year I was upgrading the MIDI capabilities of the A77 in order to turn it into an autonomous instrument controlled by the MIDI sequencer in my DAW. Although the sequence is a repeatable digital structure, the field recordings are recorded and rerecorded over each other with every pass (at least 20-50 times), each time creating a completely different sonic (not notational) composition. This was made in one take composed with only field recordings with no FX. All sounds are made from the tape recorders. Mono recording.
I really got to thinking about the essence of this instrument, and any instrument for that matter. What makes an instrument an instrument? How do these parameters apply to new instruments made with modern technology? Recently have been researching the mechanical player pianos of the early 20th century and the impact it had on how people thought about performance and composition.
Will experiment with more splicing in the future to add some more texture. The chance of splicing audio backwards. Construction and Deconstruction. Also with microphone placement.
