Hi, Dr. Laura. I have, I'm recently married and the topic of kids is coming around. My mother-in-law... You mean before you... Woohoo! Woohoo! I mean, you married a man you had not talked about kids before? Seriously? Oh, no. Oh, no. No, no. We talked about it. We absolutely did. Oh, did you both? A few more questions. A few more questions. Okay. I like to ask questions, so stay with me.
Tolerate my idiosyncrasy of asking questions. How old are you? How old is your husband? 25 and 29. Either one of you married, divorced kids before? No. Okay. When you talked about kids, did you talk about, I'd like 30, I'd like four? I talked about maybe two or three, you know, if we could, if we could swing it. Did you talk about raising your own children or sticking them in daycare where they're not loved all day?
Oh, so this is what this is about. I want to be a stay-at-home mom. Ma'am, I asked you a question. Please answer it. Did you also talk about raising the kids or putting them in daycare where they're not loved all day? Before you were married, did you have this discussion? Yes. And what was the conclusion of the discussion between you and your husband? If we can afford it, let's do it. So you didn't say, let's not have kids until we can afford to take care of them.
It was let's have kids and if we don't have enough money, we'll dump the kid in daycare to not be loved all day. Is that correct? No, no, no, no. That's not it at all. I want to be a stay-at-home mom no matter what. Good. Okay. Now tell me your question. So his mother has a problem with it. So what? No, no, no, no, no. No, no, not and. So what? And I mean that. You're 25. You're married to a 29-year-old.
His mommy disagrees because she was not home with her kid. So she doesn't want to watch you do the right thing when she didn't, I'm guessing. And you care about her opinion. Why would you care about her opinion? This is your marriage, your man, your kid. And I'm serious. So what? Thank you.

You just tell her that's what I'm going to do. Period. That's it. Thank you. You don't have to get into a lengthy discussion. That's it. Not putting my kid where he's not going to be loved all day. He's going to be in my arms. That's it. Thank you.
And I suspect you're going to have a lot of trouble with her over the future decades. So you're probably going to have to call me back again several times. She is quite involved, let me tell you. They are very involved in their very nuclear family. I didn't grow up that way, so it's a little bit of an adjustment, to say the least. You may not want to adjust to that. Is he your mama's boy? Mm-hmm.
Yeah, you're going to be calling me a lot. If you had called me before the wedding, I would have, all giggles aside, I would have suggested you not marry him because a lot of young women don't understand what a mama's boy is going to bring when his mother has full reign to make comments about things that are not her business. You better get a big spine and not think you have to acclimate to them. You might need a big spine. Thank you. Hope you have one.
I know in my career, I've talked a lot of women out of marrying such men. Very tight family. Doesn't want to go against the family. No. Okay. My number, 1-800-375-2872.
