Yes, hi, Dr. Laura. Thanks for taking my call, long-time listener. I currently live in Florida, recently retired about two years ago, and married for 40 years. Why did you recently retire two years ago?

I am 67. I'm 78. And I have... I'm 78 in a week. Well, I have saved up enough money where I don't need to work. I have made a very comfortable wealth. Can you hear me? I like going back and forth. Yes, I can hear you. Okay, so when you hear me saying something, just listen for a second, and then you can respond to it. You only worked for the money?

I worked for enjoyment. I liked what I did. Then why did you give it up? Why did you give it up? It was a time I felt like I was getting burnt out. You want to go back to it? I thought about it, but I don't need the money. We're not talking about money. Why do you keep going back to money? That's not why we work. Yes, but I don't want to work my entire life. Why not? I want to enjoy...

My fruits are the labor. Well, you're not. You have money and you have time and you're not enjoying it, which is why you're on the phone. So that thinking was misplaced. Well, I would like to travel, but my wife is a homebody and doesn't get out of the house as much as I would like. Then travel by yourself or with a couple of guys. I'll have to suggest that.

No, you don't suggest that. You inform her that you're going to be traveling hither and thither. If she'd like to join you, great. If not, you go by yourself or with some guys because you want to travel at this time in your life. She doesn't get to decide that for you. She doesn't get to decide that for you. All right. I understand now. I have to do what I want to do. She's doing what she wants to do. And she does it. Correct. And she's controlling. No, you've been weak.

Okay. I can understand that. Gun to your head. I accept control. Other than a gun to your head, no, there's no controlling you. Okay. So then when I sort of challenge her, she tells me I get nasty. You don't challenge her. I don't know why you would think of challenging her. That's the life she enjoys. Let her live it. It's not the life you enjoy. Live the one you enjoy. And if you want to travel now and then, go for it.

I inform her, not challenge her. These two weeks in May, I'm going to be traveling. Would you like to come? No. Well, you know, I'll miss you.

People like to blame their lack of backbone to do things by their being controlled to not do them. And no, you're not.

If somebody's not happy with it, if somebody's unkind because of it, that's not controlling. That's their response. It doesn't stop you from having your own desires and activities. And if something becomes abusive, then you have to rethink your situation. I have a long history with this person, but I refuse to be abused. Between now and dead is not as long as between birth and now. So I want to take advantage of the fact that I'm alive.
