The Athletic FC Podcast Network. The only way to score is, of course, to play with a handbrake off. Hello, I'm Ian Stone. This is Handbrake Off, the Arsenal podcast brought to you by The Athletic on Sunday.
The Arsenal beat Ipswich Town 4-0 at Portman Road. To reflect on the game and look at the Crystal Palace at the Emirates on Wednesday, I'm joined by Art de Rocher and Adrian Clarke. Morning or evening, depending on where you are. Hello. Good morning. I'm coming home. I'm coming home after this. Basically, as soon as this is done, I'm on a plane. Good luck with that. Good luck with that. Thank you very much. By the way, right, we'll talk about the Ipswich game, but
Leaf Davis, that tackle on Bukayo Saka, right? I mean, it was awful. Of course it was. But the Ipswich fans spent the rest of the game booing Bukayo.
And all that same old arse and all this cheating nonsense, which really pisses me off. Have you ever been blamed for something that's not your fault? Yeah. Yeah. He said that with certainty, Stoney. Yeah. Yeah, there was a certain bitterness as well there. I quite like that. Well, there's two things. I think if you're the oldest sibling or the oldest child, yeah,
It happens quite regularly in the household anyway, with the youngest getting away with things. But then at school, I remember once it was in maths and the whole class was talking. And it was one of those ones where I said one thing and the teacher singled me out. So, yeah, that's kind of what sprung to mind. I was a decent pupil, decent student, but I did like to have a bit of a laugh. So that kind of went against me.
at certain points. Yeah, no, I get that. I mean, obviously, you know, a career in comedy didn't happen just suddenly. I was talking shit for years, even when I was at school. I mean, and listen, I got thrown out in the end for starting a poker school in the sixth form common room. And that was my fault, to be fair. So, yeah, yeah. Well, also, the headmaster came in just as I had a really good hand.
I was really gutted. It cost me about £10, which was a lot of money in 1842, ladies and gentlemen. What about you, Adrian? Have you been blamed for something that was not your fault? What about on the pitch? It is normally my fault, I have to say. I get blamed for a lot, and often it is my fault. I'm quite clumsy, and I do break a lot of things. But the one thing that really stands out is another school one. It's my only ever fight at school.
Okay, so I was quite good at two shoes. Did you win? Of course I did. But it was good. It was a good story. So basically, we played basketball club. I think it was probably about 12. Basketball club. And...
This kid, Stuart Hamilton, was a bit fiery and he's Scottish. And he comes bursting into the basketball court saying, who broke my Scotland flag? He brought in a Scotland flag to school. Who snapped it in two? And it genuinely wasn't me. But he just had it in his head. It was me. So he came for me. And then the teacher sent him home. Next morning, I said to my mum and dad, I said...
probably going to have a fight today. Just, just to let you know, this kid, this kid's going to be waiting for me and it's going to kick off. So I walked into the playground, put my bag down, crossy comes, bang. So it starts, you know, we have this fight and it's the classic ring around us. And yeah, I managed to, managed to get myself on top and I got him, pinned him down and, and he wasn't very popular and there was Clarky, Clarky. So I waved to the crowd, right? And he bit my ass.
Whoa. And I went for a little bit more and then I sort of just let it go. And it was, yeah, it was, yeah, it was good. It was a good story. It was funny. It was the day where the upper school teachers came to meet you for the first time. So that was a really bad start meeting the people from the new school. But yeah, yeah, I got blamed for that. And I swear I didn't snap his flag. I don't know who did it. Still don't know. Well.
I mean, my story... Well, I've got a special guest to come on and talk about my story. It's a guy called Stuart Hamilton. I don't know if you know him. He's got a broken Scotland flag. He's looking for you, Adrian. Yeah, I mean, I'm like you, Adrian. Most of the things are my fault, you know? I mean, it just happens from time to time. By the way...
I don't... Listen, it's just football fans booing star players. I don't really mind. But I like the way the away end... It was really pleasant to hear the away end. Everyone seemed so happy. Obviously, what happened after Madrid. They adjusted the song from Madrid singing Arsenal at the Bernabeu. Ipswich Town are going down. Oh.
Which was really, really funny. On the Leafs, Dave, on the Interest fans though, do you ever get it when a player is sent off for doing something stupid and then they get clapped off? They get a stand innovation. We've done it ourselves. He's waving to the fact. No, I know, but it's just embarrassing, isn't it? It's really poor. I agree. I agree. I thought he was slightly apologetically waving. He wasn't reveling in it, I felt. No, no. And it was...
We all knew from about two minutes in what the score was going to be and he just made it worse, didn't he? It just meant the game was played even closer to their penalty area.
And by the way, on the potential injury to Bukayo, he had a nice back on his Achilles, but thankfully Mikel Arteta, a lame fear saying he was a bit sore, but it's nothing serious. So that's good. Few is what I think we all say to that. Yeah, 4-0 away at Portman Road. I mean, if we'd have been bothered, we could have been more, wouldn't it really? I mean, I actually thought they defended quite well, to be honest.
Seven point gap to Newcastle in third, Adrian. You know, I mean, in the end, and I wrote to Jay and I said this, all we've got to do is get through the last few league games, pick up enough points to finish second and stay injury free. That's all that matters, right? Absolutely, yeah. We just need to get the bare minimum amount of points needed for second and then we can just put all legs in the...
in the Champions League basket. And we do have a nice cushion now. A few of the teams play each other. So I think teams behind us will drop points. Obviously, Newcastle getting beat was probably good news for us. So yeah, I'm not worried. We're absolutely at least the second best team in the Premier League this season. And I think it will happen. But yeah, it is all about...
Staying injury free, but also keeping the rhythm going. I think that is important. Keeping some kind of momentum and sharpness. And what really impressed me about this game was A, the team selection from Mikel, which said, this is a serious game. We're taking it, you know, we want to win this. And also the attitude right from the word go. Yeah. There was a good energy about the team. We were moving it quickly. There was no laziness, no sloppiness. We did it properly. And, you know, for that reason...
We absolutely wiped the floor with Ipswich Town, didn't we? Some of the stats, I mean, touches inside the opposition box. They had five. We had 70. Shot count 24 to four. You know, passes in the opposition half, 522 we had in their half. They had 92 in ours. I mean, this was as one-sided as it gets in a Premier League game, but that's only because we were at it. If anything below being at it,
And a Premier League game can always be tricky. So well played, everyone. The confidence, I really enjoyed the confidence of the team. They're obviously looking happy and they've got, you know, they've just beaten Real Madrid, absolutely killed Real Madrid over two legs. It's going to help. But the way that they were pinging the ball about, it must be a nightmare to play against us at the moment, but it was great to watch, wasn't it? Yeah, I think that was probably, in terms of Premier League games, fantastic.
the one I've enjoyed the most in a while, just because of how comfortable it was from the start. And I'd say the confidence, you could see it within, I think, the first couple of minutes when Zinchenko pings it over to Saka and you have that first little one-two between him and Erdogan. I think you just saw...
they were flowing and it was really nice to see. I think Trosthard probably should have scored that first chance, but thankfully he got the second one and scored that. Marina got in his way though, didn't he? Yeah, so I don't know. I feel like he could have taken it first time, but maybe I'm being harsh. But it's...
either way it was it was so nice to see see that confidence and also see Ben White back because I thought him, Erdegaard and Saka as a trio were amazing and that was the first time they started together since Chelsea in November. You're nodding Adrian I'm with you as well it's lovely to see that I mean I do think that you're in Timber's probably first choice and when we're playing in the semi-final I think Timber will play but
I have a lot of fondness for those three on the right. And I think they enjoyed playing with each other as well, didn't they? They love it. They absolutely love it. And you can see the fluency was instantly there, wasn't it? Like you say, it's November when we drew with Chelsea. It's a long, long time ago. And even before that, they'd barely played together in the early parts of the season because Odegaard got injured. So, no, it was really fluent. Obviously, Odegaard and White had...
the most touches in the game. So a lot went down the right, but I really enjoyed Urdegaard to Saka. You know, we saw a lot of those little one-twos slipping him in behind the left back and that's what we remember, isn't it, from the last two seasons that they were doing it for fun and White definitely helps facilitate that. Ipswich's set-up kind of helped us because they're outnumbered in midfield so Urdegaard was always a spare man and
sensibly he plonked himself to the right of centre where he could get it and then go and exchange passes with Saka and White it was great to watch just on that I really enjoyed
enjoyed Trossard's performance as well as positioning because he'd at some points push over to that side give a bit of support to Saka and then that allowed Mourinho to actually be a centre forward rather than just a central midfielder so I thought it was really encouraging because it gave Arsenal a few different ways to attack which hopefully they'll build on against Palace ahead of PSG.
I mean, you're saying we had a spare man. We had a spare man before we had a spare man, didn't we, really? That's what I meant. I actually didn't even mean that. No, I know. I've realised, but it just seemed like there were more of our lot on the pitch than them. Do you think that Mourinho and Midfield and Trossard up front is perhaps an indication of what we're going to do against PSG in the first leg, Adrian? It might be, yeah. I do, actually. The more I think about it, I mean, I'd be reticent ordinarily to move...
move Marino from the top because he's he's done so well there and he's laid that platform and I think because he's such a hard-working centre-forward out of possession it's like when we play the top top teams a little bit like what Havertz does having a really industrious striker helps because they can drop back into midfield when we don't have it and we make it really hard for opponents Trussard is hard-working but maybe not quite as effective as as Marino that said I
I think with all the players available with Partey suspended, it is the best move. And because of the reasons Art just outlined, it can still work because Trossard is a roving striker that will pull out wide and that frees up Mourinho to go and join in. Obviously, the sacrifice is Declan Rice. He's going to have to do the Partey role. But as he showed in this game, by the way, he's pretty good at it.
By half-time, he'd made 10 ball recoveries. You know, he basically owned it. And you think about how little of the ball Ipswich had. He still won it back 10 times. So, yeah, I think that is the setup. I do. Well, I mean, what's the alternative, Art? If you stick with Mourinho up front...
What do you do elsewhere? Lewis Skelly? Well... Miles? Yeah, that was my thought ahead of the weekend. And he did finish the game in midfield. But it's too many changes, isn't it? If we do that... And I think the point on Trossard as well. So I watched back the game from October against PSG. And...
What really caused them issues, other than Calafiori kind of roaming everywhere, was Trossard and Havertz were playing as a front two. And Trossard was actually roaming out to the left and he'd always be open. So it was kind of like the reverse image of what was happening against Ipswich yesterday where he was going to the right. And that's where the first goal comes from. He pulls out to the left and is found on the halfway line, drives forward and then crosses for Havertz. So I think...
If, well, Mikel's very smart, obviously. So I think if he chooses to go that way, there's probably going to be gaps that Chausard can exploit. And if he gets a chance, we know his finishing is in good nick. Chausard again! Chausard again! Chausard again!

Also, goals in back-to-back games for Gabriel Martinelli. He's found form at just the right time, hasn't he? I mean, it's really, it's great to watch him. The industry, and then he's finishing as well. He's a handful. Yeah, it was a lovely, lovely goal. I think just as it was happening,
I think everything was perfect. Saka, I thought he was really good to kind of burst past his man. Oh, effortless, wasn't it? Effortless, just ran past him. I don't think we see that like too often where he just picks up the ball and he just runs with it.
a lot of the time we just see him combining with players, but it was nice to see him have that burst of pace, especially after such a tough hamstring injury. Then the touch from Marino is exceptional. Was he trying to score then? I think he was trying to score, wasn't he? No, no, I feel like it was a pass. Do you? Definitely meant it. Definitely meant it, yeah. I think he meant it. The majority says he meant it, and he meant it. He'll take that. And then Martinelli, I think as...
As was the case in the week, it's just nice that he's finally getting rewards for his hard work because I think for most of 2025, a lot of his work has been very selfless, especially when Saka was out with an injury. Playing on the right, playing on the left, doing a lot, but not getting a lot of rewards. So I think for him to be in the right place at the right time on this occasion, I take that because I think he deserves it.
Yeah, Ethan got another goal. I mean, he's clocking them up, isn't he, really? And we know he can come off the bench and do some damage. Also, word for Nathan Butler-Oyedeji as well. I mean, the fans are singing his name. And a decent attempt as well, Adrian, with his only touch of the game. Very, very decent attempt, yeah. No, it was a nice touch, Oyedeji. Look, he's 22, isn't he? So it's...
It's unlikely that he stays long-term because it's hard to get game time. But that kind of moment...
sticks in the memory or in the mind of potential suitors, doesn't it? And I do wonder, you know, whether that little substitute cameo, where he's unlucky not to score, will catch the eye of some people this summer and they'll maybe come in for him. But yeah, it was a nice moment actually for him to get his Premier League debut. It's very unusual to have to wait as long as he has. So yeah, it was really, really good to see. On Ethan's goal, by the way, it was the second...
of two goals from short corners, which I thought was a massive... Not a short corners. Massive feature of the game. Yeah. So what happened? I mean, if you cast your mind back early on in the game, Marino really should probably score. He's a bit unlucky, but... What a ball in. What a ball in. It's a brilliant ball in. He was just stretching slightly, wasn't he? He was just kind of coming down from his jump. Got there slightly too early. But he did his best Gabriel impression, didn't he? From the penalty spot. Absolutely superb. Yeah.
After that, we only did one more long corner. Everything else was short. And it feels like we identified a real weakness in their setup. And the goals in the second half from Trossard and Wan-Eri both come from short corners. So, Nicolas Jovert, have a good day at the office. Just on the short corners. Last week against Brentford, they actually, I think in the first half, they had 10 corners and six of them went short.
And even then it kind of struck me as maybe weird is not the right word, but just different because I sat next to Liam Farm, who's one of our tactics guys. And I asked him how many short corners of Arsenal taken this season. And it was 10.
Throughout the whole season up to Brentford, it was 10 short corners. It was 10 in this game. Yeah, 10 in this game. 10 of 12. And they've already kind of beaten that number in the next two games, which was really interesting. I think against Brentford, I was wondering, oh, is it because of the height that Brentford had and the height that Arsenal had lost out of their starting 11? But for them to do it again in this game shows it's probably more...
As you say, Adrian, Niklas Jover maybe wanting to add something different to what they can do from those situations and probably write about it tomorrow because I'm off today. You should because it is an interesting point. Football is about variety, tactics. You can't just have one tactic.
the whole time because sooner or later people will suss it out. But if you can add another layer, then it just, it gives people two or three things to think about instead of one. And, and, you know, that's where mistakes can, you know, can happen. So yeah, I think it's smart. Yeah. And Declan Rice still got his assist. He did. Yeah, quite. And Kieran McKenna, the associate manager said,
It's the highest standard we've faced all year. We've heard this from quite a few players and managers. Adrian, any regrets about the way the league season's gone? Because we're obviously a really good team, but it just hasn't quite worked out. I have massive regrets, yeah. Because I think this season was a season where we should have won the league. We're definitely good enough to win it. And...
We've been over it. There's obviously the injuries are the main factor. Decisions, you know, a load of decisions have gone against us at key moments. Probably a similar amount have gone for Liverpool. But also, you know, we've made mistakes along the way. Our game management hasn't always been the best. We haven't always been as good in second halves as we should have been. Liverpool, I wrote a piece on them this week in readiness for them lifting the title and
In the second half of games, they've lost two second halves in isolation in the whole of this season. We've lost a lot more than that. If there was just a table for second halves, Liverpool would be 21 points clear of us. So we have to look at that and think, right, that's an area we can improve on. But genuinely, if we had...
our best team and Liverpool had their best team and they stayed fit for the entirety of the season and all decisions were fair and equal I believe we would win the league and I believe we'd have won it with a little bit to spare that's how highly I rate this team Yeah Ian Stone Art de Rocher and Adrian Clarke here on the Athletics Arsenal podcast hand break off Come see the Arsenal Come see the Arsenal Come see
They get a humbric off and you can see that they are more free to play.
This is Handbrake Off, the Athletics Arsenal podcast. Me, Adrian Clark and Art de Rocher here. First leg of the Women's Champions League semi-final against Lyon. We lost 2-1 at home. Art, you were at the game, weren't you? Was this just a bit of European pedigree and experience coming to the fore here? Yeah, I think it was a mix of that and also Arsenal just missed two really, really big chances.
both of them fell to Frieda Marnum at the back post and she kind of just glanced her head as wide instead of like putting her full head on the ball so I think if they capitalised in those moments they may well have won the game but I think you also saw that Lyon are a team who have been to this stage I think 11 times Arsenal is just their second time in three seasons so the experience probably wasn't
there in some moments, especially in midfield. But then also Lyon have players with the X factor up front who make the difference. So Diani for the first goal and Dumourne for the second goal as well. So I think you just saw the levels really. But the big thing is there's still one goal in it. So they can still go to France and make a game of it.
And they came down from 2-0, they came back from 2-0 down the quarter-finals against Real Madrid, Adrian. So, you know, they're going to have some belief, this team. Well, that was at home. So, you know, it's a different kettle of fish going away to Lyon and overturning it. But can the women's team go away from home and get a win? Quite possibly. I think the key difference maybe is Alessia Russo. Obviously, she missed England duty, didn't she, with an injury. And I think she was clearly rushed back for this game, not...
Definitely not 100%. So hopefully by the time next Sunday comes around, she'll be in a better place. And I've got to say, you know, she's not the only top player in that team. You've got, you know, good players all over, Caldente particularly. But when Alessia is on it, you know, the team are on it. So hopefully she's feeling good next weekend. Yeah, they don't have a midweek game yet.
should help Russo and Chloe Kelly as well because she had to come off the bench. She was a bit behind Russo in terms of recovery so I think if she's able to start that would be a massive benefit because she was so dangerous in the quarterfinal against Real Madrid and they definitely missed her on Saturday. Sunday at five for the second leg. Meanwhile the men next
Next up for the men on Wednesday, Crystal Palace at home. Palace in the semi-final of the FA Cup, so one imagines a bit of rotation from them. Drew Norton with Bournemouth this weekend, but got stuffed by Newcastle and Man City before this. I mean...
Adrian, last game, final game before the PSG first leg. We're going to see the PSG team here, do you think? Or maybe a few minor changes? What do you reckon? Yeah, it's interesting. I haven't really thought about it yet. It would kind of make sense to go with that. Yeah, I agree.
And then maybe make some pre-planned changes in the second half, if that's possible. I do think it's a great time to play Palace, who were on a brilliant run, particularly away from home. And now they've got battered by City, got battered by Newcastle. Poor game against Bournemouth at the weekend. And they'll definitely rotate.
three, four, five players for this game. I think they have to. It's not every week you get a chance to get into an FA Cup final. So for me, if I'm Glasner, I don't think Eze plays. I'd probably rest Mateta. So there's your two best players there and then. The two wingbacks, Munoz and Tyrek Mitchell. Is it worth risking them? I'm not quite sure. So I do feel like it's there for us to win the game potentially in the first half and then
and then make changes. I mean, Mikel Arteta said, we have to put 11 players out there and have four or five changes. So let's just see how they recover in the next few days. The good thing is they are willing to play because they like that rhythm. I mean, it is really about rhythm, isn't it, at this point? And that's what I noticed in the Ipswich game. They look so connected and they look so just smooth out there. And we just want to maintain that, don't we?
Yeah, you need it because, I mean, what we've been speaking about all season is the lack of rhythm. And that's just been because of so many...
injuries so I think if they're able to kind of generate some more momentum against Palace it'll only be a good thing because PSG I think they're probably out of the four teams the team that have the most rhythm I'd say they look the most free-flowing their fullbacks getting involved in play in a way that I think Mikel Arteta would have liked his to get involved throughout this season so I think you need to
Make sure you're at a level where you can match them or not, or be better than them. Be better than them would be not. Yeah, definitely be better. Just a little bit better than them. A little bit better. Six days is, I think, about perfect. I do think if you made wholesale changes, then...
to go, what would it turn into? It would turn into more like a nine day, nine or 10 day break. I think that fee was a little bit long and a little bit, you know, you wouldn't go rusty in that time, but as you use the word rhythm, it can be a little bit jolted by that break. So I think he will go strong and hopefully we can get in a position where we then make changes. I also think six days probably is
it's long enough to make you feel excited again for it. You're probably like, oh, come on, can the game hurry up? So I'm looking forward to it. Well, you're going to have six days until the snooker, right, Adrian? That's how it goes, yeah? Stoney, seriously, mate. I've had a lot of messages about this and deservedly so. If you don't know, by the way, if you don't know that at the first leg, right, which is Tuesday week,
Arsenal against PSG. First Champions League semi-final in 16 years. And one of the biggest games the club are ever likely to play. Adrian will be at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. Is that right? Or no, Reading, is it? It is. No, it's in Sheffield. In Sheffield to watch snooker because, you know, there's friendship. Let me explain. Is there an explanation, Adrian? There is. There is.
Look, I turned 50 this year, so did my mate, and we said, look, let's...
let's treat ourselves. Basically. We've always, we've always, we went to the crucible as kids, right? Basically. I said, let's go back, but let's do it properly. Let's go VIP. And trust me, the VIP tickets are not cheap. You know, you get well looked after you're on the front row. You get, you know, you get a lot in the package and my friends has treated me to it. You know, he said, look, it's on me. He's got, you know, he's got a few quid. So, of course it's fallen on the, on the day. And,
I just feel I can't bail on him. You know, I would be, it would be a seriously bad friend to let him down. He doesn't have any other snooker mates to, you know, snooker loving mates to take. So I've just got to take this one on the chin. I think he,
Yeah, it hurts me. Every part of me wants to be there. Obviously, I was going to work on the game. I was going to earn money being at the game as well. It's costing you money. It is costing me money. To miss the Champions League. Oh, my God. Every part of me wants to be there, but I just can't be that kind of friend, really, that just says, look, this is more important. I just can't. How are you going to find out what happens? Are you going to have to wait till afterwards? Well, I've got...
you got those little ear pieces at the snooker haven't you I'm going to try I'm going to try and find a frequency that I mean it might not be possible but it might be a little frequency where I can just just tune in and manage to hear it if I can't then you know obviously phone on silent and I'll be
I'll have it on my lap. Don't worry about that. But yeah, if anyone between seven and eight pre-kickoff, you will be able to see me in the front row at the Crucible Theatre looking quite distracted, I'd imagine. So yeah, it hurts me, but...
I think it's just... It's actually not a hard decision because I just think what a s***bag friend I would be to let down my pal. Don't give us all that emotional noise. I'm not having that. Anyway, well done. Well done. What a good friend you are. I'm not looking for praise. I'm not looking for praise. I just think it's just...
One of those things you've got to take on the chin. I would say that you need to hold this over your friend for the rest of his or her life. All right. I just, until one of you dies, you need to just remind them on a fairly regular basis. I'll never let them forget. Good. Okay. Okay. Cause I mean, nothing short of a funeral would keep me awake.
Particularly after missing the quarterfinal because I was here, even though I had a great time with all the Melbourne Gooners. And thank you for being so hospitable. I said it the other day and we've run into some more guys today who've been saying lovely things and we really appreciate it.

Well done, kids. Nice work. Keep it going. We're going to need you against Palace and against PSG because we'll be missing one, won't we? Anyway, Adrian didn't get that. He didn't realise. I got it. I just ignored it. Thank you. All right. Nice to chat and we'll speak to you after Palace. Ta-ra. Ta-ra.
