Yon Machmudi, PhD, born in Jombang, 17 September 1973, received a doctorate from the Faculty of Asian Studies, Australian National University (ANU) Canberra in 2007, with a specialty in the field of Islamic Political History in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Yon Machmudi is an UI Arabic literature alumnus who graduated in 1997. He is married to Soraya Dimyathi and has 5 children, namely Muhammad Hakan Enayata, Hilwa Taqiyya, Tazkia Hammada, Tazhada Hashifa and Hazim Najata.
Currently He is a permanent lecturer in the Arabic Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of Indonesia with the functional position of Associate Professor. Serves as Chair of the Postgraduate Study Program in Eastern and Islamic Studies, UI School of Strategic and Global Studies (2017-Present). Previously he served as Secretary of the FIB UI History Department (2014-2016) and Chair of the FIB UI History Postgraduate Study Program (2016-2017).
Research activities carried out include the Impact of Social Change and Modernization of Islamic Boarding Schools on the Decline of Ulama Authority in Indonesia (2013-2015), Why They Fight the State: Transformation of Darul Islam in Indonesia (2015-2017), Bawean Diaspora in Southeast Asia (2019-2022) . Apart from writing, he is also a resource person in the field of the Middle East and Islam in national and international media, both print and electronic media. Several times he has been a source for international media such as Voice of America, BBC London, Tehran Times, Wall Street Journal, South China Morning Post, The Straits Times Singapore and Asahi Shimbun Japan. He has also been a resource person at several international meetings on Islam and the Middle East, including in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Turkey, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Australia and the United States.
Several government institutions that invited Yon as an expert resource on strategic and cultural issues include the National Resilience Institute (Lemhanas), National Resilience Council (Wantanas), Presidential Staff Office (KSP), Pancasila Ideology Development Agency (BPIP), Staff College and The High Leadership of the National Police (Sempimti) and several related ministries.
