Many thinkers worth reading wrote in past centuries:

1600s: Bacon, Hobbes, Descartes, Spinoza, Locke, Leibniz 1700s: Berkeley, Hume, Rousseau, Smith, Kant, Burke, Bentham 1800s: Schopenhauer, Mill, Sidgwick
