Chen Xue started exploring side hustles because her salary as a media professional in Beijing was low, and she needed additional income to support herself. She sought out side hustles that required minimal time and effort but could still generate significant returns.
Chen Xue overcame the stigma around making money by focusing on three key strategies: ensuring the side hustle was practical and actually profitable, approaching it with a mindset of helping others (利他之心), and making the process fun and engaging to reduce any feelings of embarrassment.
Chen Xue has successfully pursued various side hustles, including reselling sneakers, trading limited-edition collectibles like Pop Mart figures, leveraging Taobao affiliate marketing, and organizing group purchases during events like Double 11. She also engaged in offline promotions, such as offering eggs to attract new users for Pinduoduo's 'cut one price' campaign.
Chen Xue highlights several current opportunities in the side hustle market, including selling time or virtual resources on platforms like Xianyu, leveraging AI for tasks like writing and content creation, and exploring overseas opportunities such as YouTube Shorts and TikTok for platform incentives.
Chen Xue evaluates side hustles based on four dimensions: whether the skill can be accumulated and transferred, whether it allows for team building, whether it builds influence, and whether it generates tangible assets or income. These criteria help her determine the long-term viability and value of a side hustle.
Chen Xue faced several challenges when transitioning to self-employment, including unstable income, a lack of social interaction and support, and the difficulty of setting and maintaining personal growth goals without the structure of a traditional workplace.
Chen Xue emphasizes the importance of having a large network of WeChat contacts because it provides access to a wide range of resources, information, and potential opportunities. A network of over 3,500 contacts ensures that one can quickly find solutions, collaborators, and support when needed, which is crucial for navigating the uncertainties of self-employment.
