Radio One's All Day Breakfast with Greg James. Hello and welcome to Tuesday's Radio One All Day Breakfast podcast live from Liverpool. We are sitting in the glorious BBC Radio Merseyside studios where we did the show this morning just to whip up a bit of excitement about Big Weekend in the City and we hid some tickets.
Well, we hit a person, actually. Here's what happened this morning. It is the Radio 1 Breakfast Show. Good morning, live from Liverpool. It's a very, very big welcome back to the Radio 1 Breakfast Show to Mina from The Traitors. Mina, welcome back. Hi, Greg. You OK? I'm really OK. We're very, very excited to have you back because we are celebrating, obviously, this...
Oh, hang on, that didn't work. We're celebrating this. Radio 1. Liverpool. It was almost seamless. Almost. Mina, I've roped you in to help me out with something fun today. I couldn't come all the way to Liverpool and not do something stupid. So I've given you an iconic Liverpudlian and iconic traitor.
and iconic fun person, the line-up for the Saturday of Big Weekend, and two tickets to the Saturday of the festival. So we're going to do a game today in the city, and if you're in Liverpool right now or nearby, then this should interest you. Your ears should prick up. The first person to find you today...
We'll get to announce who's performing on the Saturday of Big Weekend and get those two tickets. Mina, this is going to be fun, isn't it? This is going to be so much fun. I mean, there's a chance that I might just run off with the tickets now. No, I'm joking. I wouldn't do that to you, Greg. Famously, you might. You could double cross all of us. You could just get out of there. Who knows? Just run. I mean, it would be in keeping with your brand as a traitor.
No one trusts me. But today I am being good. So this is so much fun. I'm so excited for the first person to find me. How's it looking in Liverpool today? So what are we doing? Big coats? Medium coats? What's happening? Because it's quite nice and sunny, isn't it, out there? I've got my big coat on. Big coat. Yeah, it's a massive drop from the weekend where we all thought we were in Spain. I had sunglasses on.
a gin and tonic, and now I've got a tea and a long coat. How's it looking busy-wise? Is there lots of people around? What can you tell us? There are some people walking around. They're probably not too sure what's going on. They need to tune in and find out that they've just walked past me. Okay. So if no one finds you by 8 o'clock today...
Never. Yeah.
Greg, I refuse to rip these tickets up. So someone, please, please, please find me. I refuse to rip these tickets up. Okay, let's do a little, let's make the game interesting. So you're in a location. If they find you, they get the tickets. But can you give me, can you give me some options? Give the listeners some options of where you might be and then where they could find you. Okay. So I'm in one of the following locations.
The Cavern Club, the Liverpool Beatles Museum or Sefton Park's Palm House. Interesting. I don't know if you know, Mina, but it's actually where the Beatles are from, Liverpool. I don't know if that's been made clear to you, but that is Liverpool's actual home. Yeah, it's the home of the Beatles, unbelievably. What? You're joking. Yeah, no one ever mentions it. Look at you telling me a fun fact. Mina is either in the Cavern Club
The Liverpool Beatles Museum or Sefton Park Palm House. The first one to find her gets those two tickets this Saturday at Big Weekend. But as long as it's before eight o'clock this morning, this is fun. This could go quite quickly because I know people are listening in Liverpool and they're very excited by this. So you have to be 18 or over to do this and please get there safely. Don't break any rules. Don't speed. Don't take any dangerous routes. Don't make unnecessary journeys.
For all the terms and conditions, head to Radio and Socials. That is the legal bit done. We can do the fun bit now. So get going and let's see. We're freewheeling now. We're trying to...
find Mina from The Traitors who has got a pair of tickets to the Saturday of Radio 1's big weekend. Carly, good morning. Hi, Greg. Morning. Welcome to The Breakfast Show. Where are you? I'm in Sefton Park Palm House. You're in Sefton Park Palm House. Okay, so about 15 minutes ago, Mina, who is very, very devious, treacherous...
She said she was either in the Cavern Club, the Liverpool Beatles Museum or Sefton Park Palm House. So what can you see, Carly? And by the way, what have you interrupted to go and find these tickets? I was on a run around Sefton Park listening to your wonderful voice and heard about Palm House, so I ran here. So you're on a run this morning and how is Sefton Park looking? Because that's the site of our big weekend. It is gorgeous, gorgeous and sunny as always. And how long have you done on your run?
I've just done 3K, another two to go. Lovely. Lovely little 5K to start the day. You'll feel so good. It's more about what you can say, isn't it? I can say I did 5K. You can say you did 5K. Make sure you post about it. And I'm glad that you're listening to the show while you're running as well. So...
What can you see? Can you, I mean, crucially, can you see a traitor? I can see lots of trees, lots of glass, but sadly, no Mina. No Mina. Let's bring Mina in here. Mina, hi. Hi, Greg. Can you see Carly, who's gone for a run around Sefton Park? She's desperately trying to find you and find these tickets to the Saturday of Radio 1's big weekend. Can you see her or are you going to be able to traitor-sy about this?
Can I see a you tell me? I don't know. No, I'm joking. I'm getting carried away here. No, no, no, it's fine. This is what you do, famously. So are we saying that Carly's not in the right place?
I can confirm that unfortunately Carly you were not in the right place oh Carly but thanks for trying sorry babe no it's this is good because it's process of elimination so it's not Sefton Park Palm House so it's either the Cavern Club or the Liverpool Beatles Museum what's the latest from you Mina have you got any activity around there
I can't confirm. I'm wondering, can Carly run down to either location to try? No? Is that too much? I don't know. How far is it? That's a bit of a trek, isn't it for you? It is. Yeah, sorry.
Yeah, turn that 5k into a 10. Into a half marathon around the city. Okay, so, Meena, you're being very sneaky, which is on brand for you, I'd say, but what's... We've only got five minutes left and I really want someone to get these tickets before we announce the actual line-up at 8 o'clock and I don't want to shred them. Greg, you're just going to have to wait and find out at 8 o'clock.
I'm keeping my cards very, very close to my chest, as I'm known to do. Yeah, this is very sneaky, isn't it, Carly, this? Very sneaky, Mina. Why don't you run to Session Park, Mina? That could be a fun little... Ooh, I like a challenge. OK, so this is unsuccessful for now, but you...
She's plotting something, Carly, isn't she? I can hear it in her voice. Once a traitor, always a traitor, Greg. Oh, don't do that! I did watch The Traitors, yes. Wasn't she an amazing traitor? So good, so, so good.
Thank you so much. We won't get into it now because we haven't got much time, but I think when Charlotte came along, that was the moment that I think you overdid it there, Mina. But anyway, we can talk about this another time. We've got a whole weekend to talk about this. So let's play Lil Nas X and then we'll be close to eight o'clock and maybe...
Maybe there's something going on there. Carly, have a great day. Enjoy the rest of your run. Thanks, Greg. You too. Bye. It is the Radio and Breakfast Show. We are live from Liverpool today at BBC Radio Merseyside. This is Greg James. Seven minutes past eight. Mina from the Traitors has been hiding somewhere in Liverpool this morning. So many of you have tried to detour your routine to go and find her. Greg, my brother lives right next to Sefton Park and I'm messaging him, calling him, but he's not answering, says Gabby in Chester.
You've blown it. Time is up. Lots of you have gone to the locations where you thought Mina was going to be. Sefton Park, Palm House, Liverpool Beatles Museum or the Cavern Club. Let's cross live to Mina again now. Mina, hi. Hi.
Hi Greg, how's it going? It's going okay. You are, look, you are treacherous, famously. So you've been hiding in one spot in Liverpool this morning with a pair of tickets to give away to the Saturday of Radio 1's big weekend. And earlier we told you that Mina was either in Cavern Club, Liverpool Beatles Museum or the Sefton Park Palm House. Can you confirm where you are, Mina?
Can I? No, I'm joking. Sorry, Greg. I'm winding you up. I can. I can confirm that currently I am in the Liverpool Beatles Museum. Classic spot. A classic Liverpool spot. I said that if you weren't found by eight o'clock today, you were to rip up those tickets. Did anyone find you? Greg, I told you I could not rip these tickets up.
So thankfully, yes, yes, someone did find me and she's with me right now. Hello, Amelia. Hello.
Amelia, hi! Hi! Hi Amelia, you're live on the radio. How are you? I'm good, thank you. This is very, very exciting. So you were listening this morning and did you run there? Did you drive down? Tell us, talk us through your morning. I was up early yesterday listening to the announcements yesterday and so I decided to pre-emptively go into the Liverpool City Centre this morning so that I could be as close as possible to wherever it was that...
I was running to. Very, very clever. This is good. You'd make a very good traitor, I think, Amelia. I don't know. I'm not the best at lying, to be honest. Okay, but you've done a very good job here. So you're currently in the Liverpool Beatles Museum and you're there before opening hours, so you're basically sort of night at the museum sort of vibes. And you're with Mina, so that means that you...
have got those tickets. You've got them. Amelia, these are your tickets to the big weekend. You're going on the Saturday. I know, it's crazy. So you're listening yesterday to the line-up being announced on The Breakfast Show and you're now going to help me announce the Saturday line-up. So I think...
I hope that you've got the first name that we can mention for the Saturday. So, Amelia, do you want to go for it? Yeah. So the first act on Saturday is H back to back with AJ Tracy. That is a great booking. That is a great start off to our announcements for the Saturday lineup. We're going to have H with AJ Tracy doing a very special back to back. They have never done that before. That kicks things off. Amelia, will you stick around and do a couple more with me? Yeah.
With a new Big Weekend comes a new opportunity for merchandise. Here's the thing. Last year, sort of begrudgingly, they let us get you to design some of the merchandise for Big Weekend. And I said, guys, you've got to trust the listeners. If you can't trust the listeners, who can you trust? And you really came through. Some of the merchandise ideas for last year's Big Weekend were sensational. And they were, I haven't seen the official numbers, but I'm guessing, the biggest sellers ever.
They were there, weren't they? I mean, I'm sort of half-joking, Producer Tom, but there was... I remember on day one, people were cross at me because the Longboy Duck bucket hat, the Ducket Hat, sold out. Yeah, they were gone. And the Longboy tops. And the Longboy tops. Basically, anything with a duck on it will quite literally fly. Ironically, Longboy couldn't fly. He was a runner duck. But there was a run on them. There was a run on them, yes. Good, very good.
So, last year we got some great ideas for Luton's big weekend. We got Long Boy, The Duck, Bucket Hats, Tops, T-shirts. There were some Live Laugh Luton tops as well. There were some really good... What was the other one that was really nice? It was the... Did we... We had a Live Laugh... Was it a Live Laugh Luton? And we also had I Am The Hottest record as well, which was quite good. There was also...
A Radio 1 presenter tea towel off of primary schools. You know when the teacher gets you to draw? Draw your face, draw your face, and then in the summer, we're going to make that a tea towel for Mummy and Daddy can buy that for you. That was basically what we did. We turned to be weekenders in primary school. We need some ideas for Liverpool. And there's an obvious one staring at us in the face, which is Liverpool laugh love. Live, live up love. Liverpool laugh love. Or li... La...
laugh, love, liver, liver, liver, laugh, liver, love. There's something there, guys. This is a live brainstorm. There's something there. What else can we do? Look at the line-up. You could say things like, anyone got an inhaler? That would be good on the T-shirt. Could be quite good. Useful if you've got asthma. And promotes the line-up. What other slogans could you have? Rachel Chinnery bought Greg a car. That could be another one you could put on.
And on the back of the T-shirt it says, in return for tune of the week. We need some, basically we need some, I haven't got many ideas. We need some Liverpool based ideas for stuff we can make the merch and it will actually be made as well.
So 03-700-100-100. Some stuff, sort of Radio 1 type stuff. Stuff you've heard on various shows on Radio 1. Good slogans or catchphrases or characters or something Liverpool-based. What's a good... Some good puns. You know. Yes, Amber and a few others have mentioned...
The live, laugh, love conundrum is, of course, Liverpool, Laugh-a-Pool, Love-a-Pool. That needs to be made a T-shirt immediately. That's a good one. That's a really good one. Chicken and a can of Coke on a T-shirt. Yes. And Adam the floor cutter says you've got to get the Jack Saunders. It's time to drop a big one.
Oh yeah, maybe that should be a sign next to the toilets. It's time to drop a big one. That should be on the portaloos, shouldn't it? That's good. Yeah, lovely. Samantha, are you there? Hello, I'm here. Hi, welcome to the Radio 1 Breakfast Show. Where are you? Hello. So I'm in my house in Liverpool at the minute. Oh, you're in Liverpool. Are you excited for the summer? Very, very. Tell us your idea for merchandise for the big weekend.
So my idea was Beatles-based, obviously, the home, the birthplace of the Beatles at Liverpool. Still a massive influence here. So my idea was the BBC Beatles, but with the iconic Abbey Road crossing picture, except there's radio, TV, sort of heads covering the original Beatles faces. Yeah, nice. Very, very nice. There's a lot. Yeah, that's good. I think something Beatles-y is definitely good.
I would worry that if we use the images of the actual Beatles, then I feel like I might get sued. Oh, maybe just recreate it. Recreate the classes. Recreate it. Exactly. Copy it, recreate it. Yeah, there's plenty of server classes around. Yeah.
Get a few BBC DJs out and go for a nice little walk across the zebra crossing. Yeah, I think it's a great idea. Have you got a nice zebra crossing near you? A nice picturesque bit? There must be a nice one near Sefton Park, surely? Yeah, there's plenty of zebra crossings near nice parks. Yeah. Yeah, clever idea. I think there's a few around Sefton Park as well. You could probably...
I think it's a nice idea. It's... You don't really... I mean, obviously, you would be proud of the Beatles. Essentially, they, you know, invented popular music. There is so much Beatles stuff around the city. Even in the hotel rooms, there's just pictures of Beatles...
There was a huge yellow submarine hanging from the ceiling in the hotel that I saw this morning. Yeah, it's a massive legacy that they've left behind in Liverpool and it's still massively influential today as well. Yeah, it's very cool. The musical heritage of this city obviously stretches even far beyond the Beatles, but it's so cool to bring the big weekend to a place like this.
This city loves its music, loves its football, loves its culture. We spent a lot of time near the Liver building. That's so beautiful down there by the docks, isn't it? It is picturesque, especially on a day like this when the sun's beaming. It's gorgeous. You can't beat it.
Samantha, thanks for being on and hopefully we see you in Sefton Park in a couple of months' time. Fingers crossed for tickets, yeah, definitely. I'll be there. Are you happy with the line-up? It's a dangerous question to ask live on the air, but do you like the line-up so far? Yes, definitely. Wet Leg, Blossoms, I'm there for them. And Wolf Alice announced today. I'm so excited. So good. Well, Samantha, hopefully we'll see you in a couple of months' time. Yeah, fingers crossed. Thanks, have a good day. We should have Rihanna.
Hi, Rhianna. Where are you? Hi, I'm in Cyprus. Oh, that's miles away from Liverpool. So what's going on in Cyprus? Are you in the military?
I'm not, no, I'm on holiday. Oh, lovely. Oh, just kicking back. Come to be family friends. But still listening to the radio, that's nice. Always, yeah. I set my little automation on at nine here because it's two hours ahead. But it wakes me up with you. That's nice. Oh, a little 9am breakfast show start. Yes, please. That's good. Well, thanks for your loyalty even when you're visiting, do you say family and friends out there? Yeah, yeah. My dad lives out here. So tell us your idea for Big Weekend Merchandise.
So mine is a take on the favourite Friday slogan, but it's going to be, it's the freaking big weekend, baby. Oh, yes. Hang on. Where's that kid? Hang on. There's the kid. Where is it? Let me turn that off. Hang on a second. It's the freaking weekend. Yes, I love that meme. Okay, so it's the freaking big weekend, baby. It's the freaking weekend.
I think that's a great shout. Really, really good shout that, Rihanna. Oh, thanks. Pleasure. So far, we've got a recreation of the Beatles on the Zebra Crossing with some Radio 1 DJs. We've got the... Did you like... I really like Liverpool, Laughapool, Loverpool. Yeah, I feel like... That's a good one.
By Sunday, that's going to be really difficult for people to say after a few drinks. I think that's true. But I like it. I think it's going to work well. Do we bring back another bucket hat? We haven't nailed a bucket hat idea yet. There needs to be a take on the bucket hat. And now we've got your, it's the freaking big weekend, baby. Very good. Rihanna, thank you for your service. And hopefully we'll see you in the summer. You can maybe get some tickets to Big Weekend. Yeah.
Yeah, for sure. Some great ideas there. And one final bit on the podcast today. It was around my lovely tune of the week from Rachel Chinariri, where I managed to make producer Tom panic. And he's not an easy man to make panic. He is. He's a wild card. So that was fun. I really enjoyed this, actually, a little too much. I received a new car from Rachel Chinariri in return for a tune of the week. And let me tell you, let me tell you this.
The all-new Voxel Vectra is quite fantastic. Can you stop, please? No, but the joke is the Voxel Vectra doesn't exist, so it's obviously not true. It's obviously not true. Producer Tom's saying, can you stop? It's been a long morning. I've got a lot of new buttons to deal with. I've been sitting opposite Mina from The Traitors. She's infected me with naughtiness.
And it's all fine. No money has changed hands. It's completely fine. But Rachel Chinneriri is very grateful that I've made her Tune of the Week. Listen. Hello, Greg. I've heard that you've made me Tune of the Week on a very exciting week. I'm currently on tour with the Queen,
Sabrina Carpenter. And I've been having a week. I've had feathers basically going up my nose because I was crying on stage and had too many feathers. I then was standing next to Janet Jackson. I was like, wow, what a week. And then suddenly I get a call saying, Greg James has made you tune of the week. That's nice, Rachel. I was worried. Listen to the start of this. Hello, Greg. I've heard that you've made me tune of the week on a very exciting week. I'm currently on tour with the Queen,
That would be a turn up, wouldn't it? That would be some tour. That really would. What a booking! That's the Sunday headline assorted. That's not true. Do not go to press with that story. That is not happening.
Please stop. I'll announce the full Sunday line-up tomorrow. Anyway, Rachel's got some more to say. I can't believe it. I did the O2 Arena, everyone was screaming it, and that piece of news just made my entire week on this amazing tour. So thank you for making all of my radio dreams come true.
and I hope you've been well and I hope to see you very very very soon after this tour so thank you once again so much for sharing all I ever asked you are welcome sorry Tom
Sorry about that. I'm going to have to send so many emails now. Good. All right. Thanks for listening. I'll be back tomorrow live from London for the final day of announcements. The never-ending announcements continue tomorrow morning from seven or eight or I don't know. Bye.
