Hello and welcome to Friday's Radio 1 All Day Breakfast podcast with me, Greg James, your host.
And today, great, great fun show with Jade, who is performing at Radio 1's Big Weekend in Liverpool at the end of May. She's going to take to that stage on the Sunday. She's headlining the new music stage, which will be a brilliant, brilliant moment for her. So we had her on this morning, and here she is! Jade! Woo!
Morning. Good morning. How are you? I feel great, actually. Good. You look great. Thank you. Callum Leslie's got the first question. Say hi to Callum. Hi, Callum. Hi, Jade. How are you doing? I'm good, thanks. How are you? I'm very well, and I would love, if it's all right, to ask you about something I've been thinking about for two weeks. Oh, go on. Which is your amazing Brits performance, which was fantastic. Thank you. With the big hands and everything. The big hands. Dramatic and camp, and I loved it. It was brilliant. But.
You know right at the start where you had to drop through the trapdoor?
How many times did you practice that? I think all in all, it was about 15 times. Really? And it did not get any easier. Because I don't like heights. I mean, I can't say I don't, but I don't like heights. That's quite scary. Yeah, I didn't really think it through when I came up with that idea. And then I saw it in real life and I was like, oh no, I've got to do it now. And what did you fall on? Into a foam pit. Yeah. Yes. Fun though.
No, not for me. Not fun. I get like, some people love that sort of thing, but I don't like roller coasters. I don't like big drops. Yeah. And doing that before like one of the biggest performances of my life. Yeah, I guess so. A bit crazy, yeah. It was the performance of the night though, I thought. Do you think
Do you think so? 100%. Oh my gosh, thank you. It was amazing. So much so, we were so inspired by the campery around it. I think when you're doing Big Weekend, by the way, you're doing Big Weekend. How good is that going to be? So excited. We're thinking of maybe trying to get as many people in the crowd with massive hands. Yeah, do it. Just waving at you. Yeah, that's quite scary. I'll be side of stage before you go on with a huge hand. Just ominous. Good.
Wave goodbye. Enjoy the show. Oh, no. Do you know what, though? I'm constantly feeling like I'm in a trapdoor. Like, I've got that feeling all the time now of just, like, something's going to happen, trapdoor's going to fall, wherever I am.
There aren't any, although it would have been an amazing thing for me to sort out today, wouldn't it? The chair just goes back and you're in the pit. Oh, no. That's a missed opportunity, Callum, right there. I'll bring it to Big Weekend. Oh, yes, please do. So that is going to be one of your first big shows, right? Solo shows. And it's the one I wanted. It was one of the main gigs that I was after, so I was very happy when I got the call to say I'd be performing. Big Weekend's the one, you know. It's fab, it's great.
and I get to do like a headline slot, which is amazing for me. So good. So I'm very excited to put on a big show. And it's going to be in the tent as well, isn't it? Yes. On the new music stage. Yeah. So you can do like big production in the tent and make it feel like a proper rave. It's going to be great. Yeah, I think the pop girlies love a tent because you can do more of, you know, the lighting and all that stuff. Well, actually, that was...
Me and Callum last year, we had a moment because Charlie XCX did the tent last year. Oh, yes, that's right, yes. And in there, it just gets nice and sweaty. Yes. And you can see. I said yesterday or a couple of days ago that it's going to be so busy trying to get into that tent because everyone's going to want to see that show of yours. Oh, I hope so. Of course it will. I've got to deliver a blooming trapdoor now. What have I done? Well, I'll sort the trapdoor. All right, you do that. I'll put it on my tattoo list. Trapdoor, big hands. Big hands.
I'll bring the vocals. Jobs are good. That's all we need. Come on.
It's great. It's really great, Jade. Thank you. It is F-U-F-N. Forget You For Now. And it is on the Radio Unbreakable show. Jade is with me this morning. You're on one at the minute. Am I? Yeah, I feel like you are. With these songs you're giving us, they're so good. Thank you. In Northern Banter, that's like, when you say you're on one, it's like, are you in a huff or something? So that's what I thought when you first said that. Are you on one? No, I'm all right. You've got a marred on.
That's a different one. A minute ago, a surprise was ruined. Yes, it was. By producer Tom. Because I was like, oh my God, I love this song. I really do love that song a lot. It's a great pop song. Thank you. And producer Tom just went, remember Greg to tell Jade that it's Tune of the Week next week. So that's that, ruined. Well, I appreciate it nonetheless. And let's try and do it as a surprise. Okay. So Jade, I'm going to make that Tune of the Week next week. What?
What? Yeah. Oh, my goodness. I was not expecting that. That's crazy. Don't you worry about that. When you walked in today, you saw a thing on our computer that was just, I think it was a video of Gemma Collins. It was. Have you seen her at the races yesterday? I didn't, no. I've missed this bit of history. It's meme history, I think. We've got someone standing by to actually fix your... Someone was quaffing her hair. Oh.
Oh, we don't want that. No, no, it was a good thing. Oh, it was a good thing? It's a pop star thing. You know before you're about to do an interview, someone will maybe move your hair slightly. And that's a coif. Well, that's what she called it, yeah. Coif me. Yeah, coif me. But why was she there? What do you know about the horses? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. But...
I just think if I hear a name or see a name and get a vibe about it. Yeah, great. Fair enough. She then goes on to say, you know what? The horses is for the women as well as the men. And the interviewer's like, we just had ladies day the other day. It's true. International Women's Day. We love Gemma. Yeah, we do. She's an icon. Yeah. So Jade, new song, album.
Pending, yes. Finished. Announcement coming soon for that. Great. Please let us know. Or just let producer Tom know. Yeah, he'll spill all the beans. He can ruin it for everyone. Do you know when it's out, Tom, when the AM's out?
Okay, fine. Well done. And then Big Weekend. So the set itself, we've only heard, what, three or four songs from you. Yeah. So what's the rest of the set going to be? I think there'll be maybe a couple more songs out by that point. I feel like it would be rude not to include some sort of little mix homage. That's what I was getting at. Yeah, I think we need some sort of medley or something that's going to get the crowd going. You know, bangers only. Okay, bangers only is good.
Some great reaction to that song. Great tune, that says someone. Lovely bit of kit. Oh, don't trigger me, Greg. I think it is a lovely bit of... Hang on a second. Lovely bit of kit. Yeah.
Oh, no. Jordan genuinely got embarrassed by that. He did. Yeah. He did. It was sweet, though. When he came in, he was sitting here a few weeks ago and I played that to him. Lovely bit of kit. And he got quite bashful about it. Well, do you know what? You have to big up your partner, do you know what I mean? Well, he is a lovely bit of kit. He is. Who doesn't love your song, says Mary. Well... I'm not sure it's a... I don't think it's a question you need to answer. No, no. Absolutely adore that, says Danny and Norwich. We've got Carl in Southend who enjoyed that, too. Oh, lovely. Um...
Why isn't the song called F Y F N? Oh yeah, that's actually a good point. And I can't tell you the answer to that. I think the demo always had a U instead of a Y and it's just kind of stuck. I think that person's overthinking it. Maybe. It kind of doesn't look as good.
I don't know. All the cool kids say, like, you instead of why are you. F-U-F-N works, yeah. Yeah. Let's play DJ Seinfeld. And then do you want to do a game called wrong-uns? I'd love to. Are you aware of wrong-uns? It's wrong answers only. Yeah, which I think probably is harder than it sounds. It is quite stressful. We'll do it next on The Breakfast Show. So what we need from you are wrong answers only, please, Jade. Mm-hmm.
And as you predicted, it is quite difficult, this. Yeah. It's a weird one, because I need your brain to be set free. OK. And I know that you've got a funny brain, and I know you've got a mad brain. And I want it to be... We want to get a real insight into your thought processes here. OK. So a load of questions. I just need the wrong answers from you, please. The answers have to be sort of related to the question. Oh, right. So you can't just say random words, basically. Got you. And, um...
No swearing, ideally. I'll try my best. No passing as well, because that's boring. No. So here we go with 60 seconds of wrong-uns with Jade. Question one is this. You won your Brit Award for best what? Costumes. Who is the it girl? My mum, Norma. What noise does a sheep make? What group did you used to be in? All Saints. What group is Jordan in?
Jedward. Name something you can put on a pizza. Oh my gosh, glitter. What does F-U-F-N stand for? Funny...
Ugly, freaky ninjas. Horrible that you remained locked in eye contact as you were going. Ugly, freak. What kind of plug do you sell on your website? Oh, British three-point plug. Lovely. Name me a flavour of yoghurt. Savoy. Who is the Prime Minister? Gwen Stefani. What is your job?
Carpenter. And where is Big Weekend being held this year? South Shields. Oh, yeah. If only. One day. Yeah. One day. It's not been in the North East. Oh, we did Middlesbrough about 2018. Yeah, a while ago. Yeah. Yeah.
It was hard to get relatable answers. It's hard to not be random. Oh, no, it's good. It's very good. You won a Brit Award for... The costumes one is good. That's like a standard. We're warming up. We're warming up. Who's the it girl? Norma, your mum. She is.
You quacked for a sheep. You used to be in All Saints. Yeah. Jordan being in Jedward is a lovely image. He's going to hate me for that. What an image. Yeah. It's a great image. Yeah. Just imagining the hair on there. A lot going on. Glitter on a pizza. Funny, ugly, freaky ninja.
That's what they call me. British three-pin plug on your website. Yeah. Savalor yogurt. Ooh. Who's the Prime Minister, Gwen Stefani? I don't know why that was the first thing that came to my head. Sort of like the Prime Minister of pop, though. Yeah, I guess so, yeah. What's your job? You're a carpenter and self-shields for the next big weekend. Yeah, I'm manifesting that. A lovely array of answers. So, next up is the 10-minute takeover. It's also approaching 9 o'clock.
And I wanted to do something really fun with some of the student radio team that were on yesterday's quiz. And I think you would be the perfect person to get involved with it. I've got a plan. The listeners are loving having you on today, Jade. Oh, that's so sweet. I love being here, to be honest. Alex in Essex. We love having you here. Alex in Essex says, can you get Jade to say rollercoaster again, please? Rollercoaster. Edward says...
Great to hear Jade on this morning. She has made some of the most original music of the last year. Oh, wow. Yeah, we love playing your new songs. It's been a real treat to go, what's Jade going to do? What's next? And then you do this and it's just really great and we love it. Oh, I appreciate that. So this morning, or this week actually, let me inform you and the listeners who don't listen early maybe. Yesterday's quiz happens every single morning and we have a new team every single week. This week has been a bunch of students from the University of Leeds.
which is Leeds Student Radio. Student Radio is an amazing thing. Yes. I did it. That's how I started. Really? And they're doing their show...
Now, they've just started their Friday breakfast show live on LSR. Oh my gosh. And I'm going to give them a call. Let's do it. Because I said, oh, we'll think of something fun to do with you after nine. And they were like, we've got Jade here. So why don't we just get you to be a guest on Lead Student Radio? Oh my gosh, it'll be my pleasure. So I'm going to call them live. They're expecting a call at two minutes past nine, which is now. So I'll just... They might have been listening to that last bit, I'm not sure. Hopefully they pick up. Hello, hello. Is that Amy? Amy?
It absolutely is. Hi, it's Greg and you're live on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show. Am I live on Lead Student Radio? Am I live on LSR? I mean, give us just a second because I'm not in my headphones, but I hope you are. Can you just speak again, please, Greg? Hello, this is Greg James, live on LSR and Radio 1. It's a simulcast. No way. We're so happy to have you here. So we're live now? Is the show on now? You are absolutely live. The show is on right now.
Great. Well, it's so nice to be beamed. And can people listen on the LSR website? People can listen. It's www.thisislsr.com forward slash listen. Great. Okay. So I thought I'd, I wanted to bring something good for you. I didn't want it just to be me because that's boring, but I've arranged an interview for you. Oh my God. In the studio, I've got actual Jade. Hello. Hi everyone. Oh my God.
So you're now interviewing Jade. Go for it. You don't need me in this. Go for it.
Oh my God, Jade, how are you this morning? What did you have for breakfast? Oh, do you know what? I've not had any breakfast yet, but I have had a cup of tea. You've had a cup of tea? That's fine. I've had a cup of coffee and I feel like it's just made the nerves just skyrocket. Who else wants to go next? I feel like you've got a question there. Ask me anything. What is your favourite song to wake up to and get going in the morning? Ooh, great question. I actually have a sort of chill out playlist that I put on. There's a bit of Desiree on there, a bit of James B,
Just like chill, you know, nothing too full on. Nice ease into the morning. Yeah, that's the vibe for me. I've got another one. What is your dream venue to play in? I mean...
I mean, doing big weekends, obviously a big one. Doing Glastonbury as well is going to be amazing. Yeah, so well done for that. Congrats. Thank you so much. Yeah, I can't believe it. But I'd love to do a huge short North. What alarm do you use to wake you up in the morning? It's a boring one, if I'm honest. It's just one of those sort of iPhone, like... That one really stresses me out. That one stresses me out. No, I need to change it. I do need to change it. Because as long as it's not aggressive...
Yeah, real, real. Following on from that, if you were an alarm sound, which one would you be? Yes, me! Ooh, I feel like maybe it's quite nice if there's a nice animal in you. Yeah, like...
I quite like the sci-fi one. It's a bit mystical. It just shocked me in my morning, but it gets me out of bed. Fair enough. Very nice. And what's your favourite style? Who's your favourite style icon at the minute? Style icon. I mean, I love Zoe Kravitz's style. I think she always smashes it.
Who else am I loving at the minute? I think Charli just dresses great. I mean, the list's endless. All the women are smashing it right now in the fashion world. They're great. Can I also say that you're smashing this interview? Yeah. This is great. Did you have one more question? I was going to ask you for a 10-minute takeover request. Do we want to do a request that is on Radio 1 and LSR at the same time?
Wow. Oh, what could we do? What song does, what do people want? I mean, I love a bit of Alt-J. A bit of Alt-J? Let's do a bit of Alt-J. Okay. What song? Breeze Blocks, Matilda? Breeze Blocks? Yeah. Okay. We can get that sorted out. What was your final question?
Oh, final question was, when you go home this evening, what movie are you going to whack on for Friday night? Nice. Oh, what movie am I going to whack on? Have you got a go-to movie? Do you know what I just watched, actually? And it was, in my opinion, it was phenomenal. The Robbie Williams movie, Better Man. Oh, yeah, nice. Oh, yeah.
I can't dispute the tearjerker it blew my mind I can't recommend it enough please watch it whether you're a fan or not I know the monkey thing can be a bit jarring but honestly it's one of the best movies I've seen this year
Yeah. Wow. Amazing. Amazing. The more you know, the more you know. True. Incredible. I feel like Jade would be a really good extra person on your breakfast show. Oh, I'd love that. Yeah, can you come make it at our house? Please, Jade. I'd actually love that. Yeah. Talk to Leeds, honestly. We'll have you in. We'll pick you up from the train station. Get her on a train. Yeah, please. And I love a Leeds night out. There's some good shopping centres there. What's your favourite night out in Leeds?
Oh, don't tell me. If it's just any gay bar, basically. Yeah. In Leeds. Yeah. But I haven't had a night out for a good few years, actually. Probably, like, pre-COVID, so I feel like I'm due a good old nasal. Well, I think... Oh, well, that means number. Number. I know, you know me.
call is nowhere to come Jane night out this weekend let's do it let's do it alright Amy, Lana, Mia and Jodie thank you so much for letting us crash your radio show today I hope that was fun and we're going to play your choice on the 10 minute takeover have a great rest of your show bye thank you bye
Thanks, LSR! It's old Jay, breeze blocks for LSR, the student radio station of Leeds University. And it is... We're already ten minutes late for the ten-minute takeover. What? But that's OK, isn't it? Yeah, it's all fun and games as well. It's Friday. Let her air down. It's a bit of fun. She's having a laugh. Jade, do you want to just stick around for a little bit longer? Actually, yeah, I might as well. I'd like to get a choice from you, actually, for the ten-minute takeover. That'd be nice. But we're going to see what the listeners want.
First, let's see what it lands on when the timer has finished. When it's finished, we'll play whatever's at the top. The ten-minute takeover. Off the screen. Hundreds and thousands of messages coming in, streaming in. Let's see what we're going to start with. Let's stop it. Let's stop it there for a good reason. Why don't we play for Libby in Singapore, your live lounge. Oh, my gosh. Backbone. Backbone. Backbone.
Let's get that loaded up, and I think we should start with that. Libby in Singapore, this is a great shout. Thank you. Jade Backbone from October? Yeah. Oh, from Live Lounge Month? Yes. You're going to hear plenty more Jade through your speaker. Oh, yeah.
What's it like listening back to it? It was weird. I got a bit nervous. Matt the Boxmaker says Jade's Live Lounge is something special. Wow. Finally, Greg. I've been requesting that daily since it happened. Thanks to Jade for finally getting that on the radio again.
Pleasure. Emma says that is why I love the Live Lounge. I think I said that at the time. That is exactly why the Live Lounge is brilliant. Yeah. You've got to try something that's a bit out of your comfort zone. Absolutely. That was very brave for me. I was very nervous on the day. But yeah, I think the beauty of Live Lounge is like reinventing a song to make it sound like your own. Yeah. It was brave of you.
It was very brave of me. Thank you so much. I love, just nice to hear Alan Shearer's name in a song, isn't it? Always, always. Come on, final this weekend at Wembley. Are you going? Absolutely. EFL Cup final against Liverpool. Yeah. Okay.
Could be all right. What do you mean it could be all right? I'm going to need more faith than this in Newcastle. It's going to be great. Jade is here. Still here. Sorry we've kept you so long. No, I'm having a lovely time. Yaz is in Redditch and says, I am also English and Yemeni. This makes me feel so connected to you, Jade. I love you. Oh, shukran. Isn't that sweet? That's very sweet. Loads of lovely messages. And we were just talking about Scissor Sisters who are also doing Glastonbury this year. Yes. You're doing Glastonbury. Yeah. Can't quite believe it still. Yeah.
So you went last year, right? Yeah, I went last year with Jordan. I was watching all the acts thinking, like...
I hope I get to do this one day. In my head, I was thinking, you know, maybe five years' time, I'll have a few records out, I might get that opportunity. And then the call came in to do it this year, and I did shed a tear. Oh. Yeah. Well, it's a huge moment. It is. So you're doing it on that iconic Woodsy's stage. Oh, yeah. Which will be so good. Well, Saturday afternoon. Saturday afternoon, yeah. Perfect. Can't wait. And you get the rest of the weekend off. Yeah, I can chill. I can watch Rod Stewart in peace the next day.
It's going to be great. Jade, let's have a final selection on the 10-minute takeover. Okay. What would you like to hear next? Well, since we were chatting about Robbie Williams, I'd really love to hear his song with Kylie.
Kids, absolute tune. Yeah, this is an underrated Robbie Williams song. I think so. Because the chorus is enormous. Yeah. Okay, well, this is a nice chance to say thanks. You're great, and we'll see you soon. Thank you. Thank you so much. We'll see you at Radio 1's Big Weekend in Liverpool. Yeah, see you there. Thanks for being on today, Jade. So that was really fun today with Jade. And now we welcome a dear friend, a dear colleague, and a dear nonsense merchant.
Phil Stocker, welcome to the Radio 1 All Day Breakfast podcast. Hello, I'm here. Phil Stocker has been a friend of mine for many, many years. He's been a fantastic producer on Radio 1 for even longer than I've known you. And for the last few months, you've been editing this podcast. I have. And I wanted to invite you on today to say thanks for your service. Many thanks. Thanks.
And how's it been editing this podcast? It's been great. It's been lovely to edit and I've sort of, I'm going to be honest, I've got back into the show. Sort of listening around to quite a few other things as well. Oh, have you now? Yeah. Well, you're an audiophile, aren't you? And you love audio. I love audio and radio and you guys at the top of your game and it's never sounded better, I don't think.
You're very kind, Phil. I actually wasn't fishing then, but the reason I wanted to get you on today was to send you off into the future because you're leaving the BBC today. Well, due to an HR error, actually Tuesday, but we're saying today because it feels more final at the end of the week. Yeah, it's the last time I'm editing the Breakfast Show podcast. So we wanted to get you on to co-host. And you're
A proper radio... I mean, we bonded immediately over a love of all things nerdy and radio-y. When did you first listen to Radio 1? What was your earliest memory? Oh, gosh. First memories, probably listening to Joe Wiley and Steve Lamac doing the evening session, Ask Your Dads, and...
And then probably Radio 1 Breakfast Show because it was massive then. It's always been massive. So what was your breakfast show host? My breakfast show host, it was probably Chris Evans. First one, Evans. Yeah. Okay, so from Evans, can you... This is your final test before you leave. This is your exit interview. Sure. Can you give me the order of the next... Who was straight after Evans? So Evans was...
24th of April, 95 to the 31st of January, 1997. So he only did it for a year and 200, nearly two years. Yep. Nearly two years. Then who was next?
I'll give you a clue. Go on. They didn't broadcast it from London. Oh, yeah. Oh, wow. This is such a Radio 1 test. OK, so Mark and Lard. Mark and Lard. Yes. Correct. Then we were back in London with... With Zoe Ball. Zoe Ball. Then what happened? Then Sarah Cox took over. Then Sarah Cox. Then... Then Chris Moyles. Then Chris Moyles. Then... Nick Grimshaw. Then... Your good self. There you go. Yeah. OK.
So, Phil, we wanted to wish you well. And we wanted to get you to host this podcast for your final day. Amazing. Will you be editing yourself? Yeah, it's quite strange that. It will be weird. Well, what do you want to do next? Do a quiz? All the next things? Why don't we do the final of the quiz? Yes, final of the quiz. Today, it was Amy versus Mia. Oh, yeah, I didn't do the OK, let's go kid. I'm sorry about that. Should we do it now for the quiz? Does this work? OK, let's go. Yeah, sort of, it works.
Amy versus Mia on yesterday's quiz, the final. Amy, if you win, we get to play Cheryl, call my name. Mia, if you win, we play Amy Winehouse and Valerie. We could actually play the original Live Lounge version. Would you want that version or would you like the Mark Ronson one? Yeah, of course, either. I love both versions. Either. She's easy breezy.
Also, producer Tom would like me to tell you that he is very excited about also coming to Leeds later. He's having a weekend in Leeds. Have you got a good pub recommendation? Because he loves a good pub. We went to Original Oak last night, so I'd recommend that one. Okay, Original Oak. Great.
Belgrave's good as well. Belgrave. OK, here we go with the final of yesterday's quiz. Let's stop doing... Basically turn into Top Jaw then. Let's... Question number one. Amy, we go with you first because you're in the lead and you are the captain. Well, you're not in the lead, but you are the captain, so you get to go first. Amy, question one. Netflix released the first look at season seven of its dystopian series Black What? Mirror. Yes. Mirror.
It's first to five, remember? Mia, yesterday was National Ken Day. What actor played Ken in the 2023 Barbie movie alongside Margot Robbie?
Um, Ryan Gosling. Correct. Amy, we're back with you. A UK man was fined for keeping an unlicensed alligator in his back garden. But what does an illegal garden alligator sound like? It's a really good performance on that. Really good. If I could give two points, I would. Mia, yesterday was National Elephant Day. Please make a noise like an elephant who was being celebrated nationally. That's one of my favourite questions ever. Was that yours, Susanna? Yeah. That was great. Yeah.
Question three. Man United played Real Sociedad in the Europa League last night, but who won the match? Man U. They did. Mia. The trailer was released for a new Disney live-action movie about a little blue creature who befriends a girl called Lilo. What's the blue creature called? Stitch. Yes. Amy. It was rumoured that Sadie Sink would appear in the sequel to which superhero movie starring Tom Holland? Spider-Man. Yes. Mia. Yes.
Spurs played AZ in the Europa League, but who won? Tottenham. They did. Amy, this for the win and this for Cheryl Cole. Call my name. That's not Cheryl Cole, just Cheryl. Which singer of About Damn Time and Juice revealed new music at her concert in L.A.?
I know it. It's Lizzo. She knows it. It's correct. You've won the quiz, Amy. Great week. A captain's performance this week. Very, very good. You must feel incredibly proud.
I am incredibly proud, but before we get the song on, I feel like I have to make a national apology to all of the Crufts watchers and warriors out there. I feel like I've just done some disjustice to the population. What, was this because on Monday you didn't know what Crufts was? Yes!
Honestly, the outrage has been crazy. Oh, really? What outrage on campus? Yeah. I think it's okay that you didn't know what it was and you thought it was horses. Well, there should be a cross for horses then, shouldn't there, really? Well, there is. It's show jumping or what's the dressage thing? You know, the horse dancing. Oh.
There we go, then. Yeah, they go... Don't worry. I'll retract the apology, then. Yeah, the horses have got their dancing. Crufts... Dogs have got theirs on Crufts as well. Yeah, we've seen horses dancing in the actual Olympics, so they're fine. Great. I feel much better now, don't you? Until he was not in the bloody Olympics. Dogs! I think that's what we need. So, actually, yeah, I'm...
I reject your apology. Anyway. Okay. Okay. Don't apologise for yourself. You don't need to worry about that. But well done on the quiz. So look, the future of radio is in safe hands. There are a lot of 20-year-olds doing a radio show every Friday and they're really excited by it. I think that's brilliant and that's exactly what student radio is. I need to tell you about a funny thing. I've not mentioned this on the radio, but this is maybe podcast only because it's quite a nerdy thing. Go on. But...
At the Radio One Big Weekend launch, where all the DJs were together, there was like a Tom Grennan did a little performance. A load of musicians were invited, a load of sort of influencers and TikTokers and stuff were there to create a buzz, you know? Right. Create a buzz. Good buzz. And I met this guy called Watson, and he is a huge TikToker. He's got like six million followers. Really nice guy.
So anyway, he was talking about radio and he was like, oh, I've listened to Radio 1 for ages. I love listening to Radio 1. I do a show on Represent. He's really good, really interesting guy, really funny. And he said, oh, Greg, I wrote about you in my dissertation. And I got a first. And I said, we got a first.
And then he was talking about it a little bit. And he was like, yeah, I was talking about, you know, how radio is evolving and stuff. And I was like, what was the title of your dissertation? And he said, The Death of Radio. Of course it was. So I'd like to thank Watson for that. But of course, it doesn't mean that radio is dying. He was talking about it evolving. I said evolve, not revolve.
Let's have another bit of The Breakfast Show and we'll get you up to date now with all the latest things. If that's right with you, Phil? Please do. Radio One Breakfast. All the latest things. First up, some big TV news. There's a new season of Black Mirror on the way. The seventh season of Netflix's dystopian sci-fi series. There's a new scary trailer. We'd like to welcome you back. Ready? Yeah. Three, two... And action. It's a great show, Black Mirror, if you've never watched it. And they always have incredible cast.
involved in it. Peter Capaldi, Rashida Jones, Will Poulter, Chris O'Dowd, Emma Corrin and loads more already announced on that. 10th of April, the new series starts. Next up, from the sublime to the ridiculous, we go to the Cheltenham races now, which is happening at the minute and it's the big one today, isn't it?
Gemma Collins was there yesterday. Of course she was. And she had a full glam squad with her. You've got someone standing by to actually fix you. That's incredible. Quaff me. She's just a walking meme, isn't she? Quaff me.
So, why was Gemma Collins there? What do you know about the horses? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. But I just think if I hear a name or see a name and get a vibe about it... Yeah, that's OK. Everyone's welcome. It's like most people at the Grand National, really. Finally, big day in new music. Huge day. Loads of big records out today. Calvin Harris' new song, Smoke the Pain Away, is out. I spark a light sun in June
Roll up and wait for you. We've got brand new music from our Big Weekend Friday headliner, Tom Grennan. His new song's called Boys Don't Cry. What do you expect me to be? What do you want from me? So we're going to play loads of that new music throughout today's breakfast show. And I want to play New Chapel Roan right now. She performed this a few weeks ago on Saturday Night Live in America. She has talked about how much she loves country music and she used to drive to school.
listening to country music radio stations so she thought you know what I'm going to go a bit yee-haw on this one and it's really great it's a good Friday pick-me-up this enjoy producer Phil is my special guest on the Breakfast Show podcast today as he is leaving the good ship this place today
What was the first show you produced here? The first show I produced was Lamac Live with Steve Lamac. And we champion new bands and do brilliant sessions and we play it out on the radio. Great. Then you did that. You did a bit of Joe Wiley. Did Joe Wiley. My first ever, the craziest thing that I ever did on Joe was I was an AP just before I became a producer. And we had Beyonce Day. And it was Beyonce live from Maida Vale. The normal producer was away. Oh.
And it was Beyonce with a 12-piece orchestra, a load of competition winners who were so excited to be there. Wow. And lots of people came down from the BBC and it was all very exciting. But I do remember looking through the studio glass and being like, now would be a bad day to mess up. Yeah, it would be bad. Do you remember those shows that Joy Wiley used to do from her house? Oh, yeah. I used to love those. As a listener, I was like, this is mad. She's got Jay-Z in her kitchen. And she did. Yeah, actually there. Google that because that actually happened. Yeah. You know, she had Jay-Z...
The Hoosiers. Yeah. All in her kitchen. Yeah. Zootons. Next up on the Breakfast Show podcast, we'll give you some more content. How about that? Here are some silly little games that we play in our head when we're on our own. Greg, I've got one for you. When I go for a run in the winter and it's dark and cold, I pretend I'm in an advert for Nike or Adidas or something. Big hoodie looking really cool, running fast, streetlights on, etc. I'm with you on that one. I do the same.
Tom says, even when I'm on my own, near a bed or a sofa, I'll throw myself at it like I'm a WWE wrestler being body slammed. Sometimes I'll even do dramatic commentary. Oh my God, it's a choke slam! When I'm walking, Greg, and when I'm walking anywhere, I imagine I'm in a Crimewatch reconstruction and I have no idea why.
Here's a good one for you, Greg. I pretend to be on a podcast all the time, and if I'm listening to a podcast, I'll pause it and imagine how I would answer the question the guest was just... It's great. It's a really, really good one. James in Salisbury says, I pretend that when I'm walking, I have to beat the car coming behind me to the next lamppost, or it's the end of my world. I love the little games. What about this one? I'm sure a lot of people do this as a builder or in the trades, but you've got to drill...
You think you're part of the SAS. You're hiding round corners, you're backed against the door, you're peering round, you swing out. Of course! You've got to pass the time of day somehow. So my thing is, if I was out on a country walk somewhere and was trying to tackle a particularly steep hill, I would imagine that I was a horse pulling a trailer up the hill. OK.
We're going deep here. I'm driving and I let a car go. I'll pretend that I'm in Star Wars and have the force and go, like, drag them across the road and let them pass in front of me. Joe says, Greg, I've got a car that looks like it could be an undercover police car. So I regularly give people the I'm watching you finger to eye movement.
This whole thing screams Mr Bean in an airport pretending to hide a gun. Yes, it does. Next up on the podcast. I think we're out of content, actually. Fine. So go on, give us a little potted history then. So you've all the people that you've worked with. So you've done Stephen Mack, Joe Wiley, then what? Uh,
And then what? And then did the chart. And then I worked with JK and Joel. Oh, yeah. UK's most listened to chart on my watch. Thanks very much. Yep. Trev Nelson. Yeah, big Trev. Big Trev. Raz Kwame, he was amazing. Annie Mack. Fabio and Groove Ride on the Drum and Bass show. Love doing that show. That's two shout outs in a week from Fabio and Groove Ride. They were on yesterday's Thursday. Oh, yeah, weren't they? Someone was going to see them at the Royal Albert Hall. Yeah.
Who else? Gosh, there's so many shows. I loved working with Grimmy on weekends. I loved working with Fern on the morning show. Won a nice award for that. Oh, yeah, you did. You've done so many shows. I know. Jack of all trades. Phil and Alice. Phil and Alice, 10 till midnight. Dev and Alice.
No, but Dev on Early Breakfast, of course. Dev, yeah. Yes. And then we had a little run on the Early Breakfast show when Neil Sloan was off. We did. You did your MP3 game. Yeah. We used to play...
In the cold light of day in 2025 this sounds mad, this idea. But we had an iPod that we would just shuffle through and someone would say stop and then we'd just play whatever it landed on. Were they cleaned? They were all cleaned. All radio edits. They were cleaned, yeah. Also in that era, on a Friday we did the mini-disc game which really dates it. Mini-disc? So then when I started mini-discs were old.
obviously, but there were still some mini discs lying around in some trays in some cupboard somewhere. And there was still a mini disc player in the studio, so we used to get these old mini discs and shuffle through that. Tell your team about a feature you did called the Wind Tunnel. Do you know about the Wind Tunnel? Yeah, you've said about the Wind Tunnel. Oh, yeah, that was fun.
Yeah, farting into the mic. Tell it again. Well, it was a real game where I'd fart into the microphone before the show, so I'd record it at about half three in the morning. I'd try and squeeze a fart out, and then the listeners had to guess what I'd eaten for dinner the night before. Guys, can we do it now? So bad. So bad. That's really good. Eventually, you know, 12 years later, I've got the breakfast show. LAUGHTER
when I'd refined my act a little bit. Anyway, that's all from the show today. Phil, we just wanted to say thank you to you
Not only for the last few months on this Breakfast Show podcast, but for being an amazing creative force in the building. You were so nice to me when I started. We became really good friends. You're an amazing producer. You're a radio anorak, one of the greatest. And we're going to miss you. But we will, of course, see you soon. And I'm sure we'll work together again at some point. Yes, I hope so. Well, you're all brilliant at what you do and just keep being brilliant. And it's all in good hands.
Guys, should we keep being brilliant for Phil? For Phil. Shall we? Yeah, let's... We're going to keep being brilliant for you, Phil. For everyone. Thanks, Phil. Cheers now.

Hello, I'm Robin Ince. And I'm Brian Cox. And we would like to tell you about the new series of The Infinite Monkey Cage. We're going to have a planet off. Jupiter! Jupiter!
versus Saturn. It was very well done that because in the script it does say wrestling voice. After all of that it's going to kind of chill out a bit and talk about ice. And also in this series we're discussing history of music recording with Brian Eno and looking at nature's shapes. So listen wherever you get your podcasts.
