BBC Radio 1 Radio 1's All Day Breakfast with Greg James.
And we got you up to date with all the latest things. And we tried to give away some tickets to Radio 1's Big Weekend. Let's start with today's showdown. Radio 1's Big Weekend. The showdown. Thank you, Jordan. And good morning. Welcome to The Breakfast Show, live from the city centre here in Liverpool, ahead of Big Weekend, which starts tomorrow. Tate McRae coming up, Georgia Smith and Haim as well.
all performing on Radio 1's Big Weekend across the weekend. Mina, good morning. Good morning, Greg. How are you? Pretty good, thank you. It's been a really fun week. I've loved having you on doing this. And I know that it's sort of emotionally tough at times for you to do because, look, you're great as a traitor, but you've got a heart as well. I have. You want people of Liverpool to come together this weekend, don't you?
I want everyone to get a ticket. So Tuesday was quite rough, knowing that I couldn't give away those tickets. I had to rip them up. And the headteacher stroke mother in me came out and I said, no one's going, no one's going.
Well, Monday, it started off with a steal on Monday with Andrew stealing from Emily. Then we had Teresa and Carly betraying each other and doing a double steal. Then yesterday was a much more friendly affair, wasn't it? On the top of the Liverpool wheel with Cosi and Tom both taking a ticket each. But what will happen today? We've got another pair of tickets for tomorrow, for Saturday and for Sunday. What can you tell us about your location this morning, please, Mina?
As always, Greg, you know, I can't give you too much. I have to be found. But what I will focus on is I am somewhere in and around, around Liverpool. So in and around Liverpool. So we're talking. OK, well, this is good. We've said all week that it's not necessarily in the city centre. That's right. And it wasn't on field on Monday, but...
I think it's very important for us to focus on the in and around Liverpool. All right. So we're thinking... That's all I'll say. So a little bit further out. So I'm right in the middle of the city. Well, pretty much. I'm down by the docks. But it's a stone's throw from the city centre. We're sort of by the Liver building. So you're talking a little bit out of town maybe today. Let's put it this way. I certainly can't see you right now. Okay. Okay.
Yesterday, she was sort of looming over us on the Liverpool wheel. And you're very sneaky. You were just there. You were just there watching us all morning. And then you were there going round and round on your wheel. So today, we think Mina is further afield. But where could that be? So let's play a song. I know what happens here. You're not going to give me a clue now, are you? Not right now. Let's play a song. Yeah.
Classic Mina. And then we'll come back to it. Tate McRae, Georgia Smith and Haim and we'll get our first clue on today's showdown. Please, dear Mina, can we have our first clue? Give us something. Greg, you do them so well. You really do. But before I give you the clue, I just need our listeners to listen to this carefully. If you were going to find me today, I need you to wear closed toe shoes.
Don't turn up in sandals, flip-flops. Please. That feels... That's not the clue. Well, it does feel like a sort of clue. Maybe a little nugget of a clue, but it's not the official clue. I know they're renovating the Maritime Museum. Are you doing some construction? Are you on a building site?
I've just scheduled something in your schedule to drop. So play that voice note for us, Greg, and that's your official clue. I'd love it if you were in the docks, just helping out the cargo and all the rest of it. All right, here we go. Hello, Greg. It's Ben from Mumford & Sons here. So if you want these tickets, you'll need to be brave. It might take all the courage you have left, if you know what I mean.
Take all the courage you have. That's a Mumford, that's a Little Lion Man lyric. Take all the courage. Yeah, it's Little Lion Man. Hello, Greg. It's Ben from Mumford & Sons here. So if you want these tickets, you'll need to be brave. It might take all the courage you have left, if you know what I mean. If you know what I mean. If you know what he means. No.
I don't. But that's a clue. Little Lion Man. Oh, okay. Well, I'm forming some thoughts in my head, but I'll see what the list is. I don't want to lead the witnesses too much, but I've got some ideas in my head. But 03-700-100-100. Where is Mina this morning?
We should have Rachel. Hi, Rachel. Hello. This is a developing life situation. Rachel, where are you? I'm in Liverpool. Okay, tell us your theory. What's going on? So I had thought maybe she's at the Northley Safari Park. Oh, go on. The Northley Safari Park. I was just going to say because it's outside Liverpool, you know, with the whole lion thing. Yeah, that's quite... How far away is that?
I mean, Safari Park was not a bad... The shoes, the shoes thing. The shoes. Mina, the shoes. Rachel, Rachel, Rachel. Oh, okay. I could be, I could not be. How far away is that from the city centre, Rachel? It's quite far. I don't actually know, but we had our Christmas party there a couple of years ago and it was probably about half an hour. Nice.
Rachel, were there any animals, lions at your Christmas party? I'm not involved in the Christmas party, but you could definitely hear some. OK. 41 minutes away from where I am now is Knowsley Safari Park. So it's near Prescott. Prescott, yeah. OK. OK. That's surely... Are you near there now, Rachel? No.
No, no, I'm not. And I don't drive, so I can't even make it out there. Well, you're not bloody used, Rachel. Anyway, look, I'm going to play a song and then actually probably let's, what should we play here? Play a bit of Barry Can't Swim. And look, someone needs to get down there. I think we need to get down to No Seating Safari Park. Rachel, have a great day. Thank you. You too. Bye. I think you've cracked that, you know. Radio One's Big Weekend. The Showdown. What's happening, Mina?
There is an update. There is an update. I have been found, but only by one person.
Okay. So I can't confirm exactly where I am. I have got a second clue for you that might help our listeners because I want to give these tickets away. Okay. So I've just dropped you a clip in your schedule. Have a little look for me and play that out loud, please. Mm-hmm. One second. Bare necessities, the simple bare necessities. Forget about your worries and strife. I mean the bare necessities, that's why I'm there.
I always like that bit because it says titties, doesn't it? That's a side note which we can discuss later. But that's confirmation, isn't it? That is confirmation that you are at the Safari Park. Yes? I'm not confirming it. Oh, come on! I've got more clues to give. So come on, listeners. Get your closed toe shoes on and come and find me. Come on.
Clothes, toes, shoes. You've got to take all the courage you have left. Little lion man, lions at the safari park, bare necessities, all of that. It all points to nosy safari park. So someone's found you. We need another contestant, basically, is what you're saying. Yeah, I need one more listener. If you're nearby, then this is your opportunity. We'd love to send you to Big Weekend. And are we... Should we play the whole thing? I think we should play the whole thing.
Yeah, this is what we need. This is what we need on a grey morning in Liverpool. I'm Burner Boy. It's location. And Mina. Mina. Hello. Yeah. Have you got someone else?
Greg, I've got two lovely listeners with me and we're actually on the move. We are in the back of a safari van. Yes. Going to see some baboons. Off to see some baboons. Oh, yeah. Can you confirm your location, please? Knowsley Safari Park. Yes. Radio One's big weekend. The Showdown. We thought that it was this.
So who have we got today then? So today we've got Maddie and Jade. Yeah. How are you feeling, girls? Nervous. Maddie, what were you on your way to doing or what were you doing? I wasn't really doing anything. I was just driving past and had the radio on three minutes, heard the Little Lion Man reference and...
Pulled in. Loved it. Greg, I have to say, it was very, very fun watching the cars pull up and they dropped the window down. They were obviously like, is Mina here? Jade, what were you doing around here? So my little boy actually goes to nursery in Knowsley Safari Park, so I was doing the nursery drop-off. Greg? Is your child a baboon? I did actually say to producer Susanna and Amy that...
I promise you somebody will be dropping off their child at nursery because there's a nursery in the Safari Park. By the way, that's the coolest nursery in the whole world. Right? Yeah, it's pretty cool. Wow. He must never want to come home. No, he literally doesn't. He sees the animals every day and he just never wants to come home. But this is the perfect situation. More primary schools and nurseries should be on the site of...
If safari parks, then kids would definitely want to just get there as early as possible. Yeah. I love that. Do they all have feeding time together, all the kids and all the monkeys? He eats like a baboon, so I wouldn't be surprised. Do the teachers just throw scraps of banana at them at break time? Yeah, well, I tell them if he misbehaves, then he'll get put in with the lions. It's a great threat. You don't want detention, do you? In the lion enclosure.
Okay, so Maddy and Jade, welcome to the Radio 1 Breakfast Show. Look, things aren't going to be quite as jolly as they have been in the last minute or so because we're about to get tense and we're going to do a little showdown and it's going to be split or steal. Mina, do you want to explain the rules to them, please? Yep. Ladies, I don't know if you've been listening, but all week we've been giving away a pair of tickets to the whole weekend of Radio 1's Big Weekend. So...
Shortly, I will give you a whiteboard and on there you've got to write either split or steal. Now, if you both write split, which is what happened yesterday, you get a ticket each to Friday, Saturday and Sunday. If you both write steal, nobody gets anything and the mother and her teacher and me will come out. And if one of you writes split and the other writes steal, then unfortunately whoever has written steal gets both the tickets and the other one gets nothing.
Tough. And then, Greg, I'm sat in between them both, so then I have to be the awkward person saying, it's going to be fine, we'll get out of the van soon. What I really like is that you decided to do this on the move and have a safari at the same time as doing the game, which is really good. I can hear the... It sounds like you're on a quad bike. Ooh, maybe that's for tomorrow. OK.
Let's play a song and we'll come back and we'll do Split or Steal with our contestants today live at Knowsley Safari Park. Maddy and Jade are standing by. And actually, before we continue, Maddy, tell us about your big weekend plans. Did you have any? No, I didn't have any plans. I actually said to my husband yesterday, we're staring clear of Sefton Park this weekend because it'll be manic. So, yeah, when I pulled up to his work just before and said, I'm going to go.
He was like, let's do it. So now, I guess, hopefully, we'll see. You'll get a ticket? Okay. Let's do it. Let's do it. Let's do it together? Or let's do it? Interesting. Or Jade, hi. So what about you? Were you planning on maybe listening at home, watching at home? Or maybe were you going? Were your friends going? What's the situation? Yeah, some of the other girls will go in. But I was supposed to be at my sister-in-law's baby shower. Yeah.
Oh, bin that. No, the baby won't. It's fine. A big weekend beats a baby shower, doesn't it, I think? Yeah, just don't tell her. You've told her. OK, so just the one ticket for you as well? Yeah. Yeah? All right. I think we're going to have a very interesting showdown. It's happening next. I'm live in the city centre of Liverpool.
Mina is live at Knowsley Safari Park, just out of town. And the scene there is that you're watching baboons while doing the giveaway, right?
Greg, the baboons are magnificent. There's just been this little one. He must be about three years old. He's climbing a tree. And they're all like, some of them have snuggled up with their mums. There is some on the other side of us, the side where Maddie's sat, that look like they're watching The Hunger Games. I don't know what that says for this situation. I mean, they are. They know. These animals are smart. They know what's going on here.
So it's Jade versus Maddie on the showdown today. Yeah. I say versus, it doesn't have to be versus, does it? It could be they could be in cahoots. Greg, I will say this is the first day where I asked them, do you want to discuss sharing? What's the plans? And they both just looked the other direction. So I don't know what that says for where this is going.
I've got to say, it doesn't sound good. It does not sound good. All right, well, there are a lot of theories on text. There's a lot of... Okay. Yeah, there's a lot of theories. I'd say most people think there's going to be some treachery. That's what I think. Well, who knows?
So do you want to explain what's happening next and let's go for it. So it's Maddie and Jade on the showdown Thursday morning, a pair of tickets to Big Weekend tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday. Up for grabs. Mina, what happens now? Right, what we're going to do now is I'm going to first ask Jade to turn a whiteboard and then I'm going to ask Maddie.
If both the girls have put split, then you each get a ticket to the whole weekend of Radio 1's Big Weekend. If one of you has written down steal, then you get both the tickets and whoever's written down split gets nothing. If you've both written down steal, nobody gets anything and I have to rip these tickets up, okay? So Jade, I'm going to come to you first. Please turn your whiteboard around.
Oh, she said split. Okay. Oh, she's put split. That's good. Jade has said split. Maddie. Okay. We've got a split from Jade. I'm going to ask you to turn your whiteboards around, please. Oh, steal. Greg. Greg, so sorry. Monday's madness is repeated on a Thursday. Yeah. Maddie has taken both tickets. I've gone feral like a baboon. Oh, wow. Maddie. I'm so sorry. No, you're not.
- I can't go on my own. - You're not sorry at all. - I might not be that sorry if I'm honest, but. - Greg? - Gotta take the husband. - Do you remember when I said the baboons on Maddie's side where they were watching like the Hunger Games, they could sense the treachery. - I'm so sorry, Jade. - Oh, Jade. - It's okay.
Maddie gave it away, I think, when she said that they were both going, so she needed two tickets. I was honest. I didn't lie. True. The signs were there. No, I knew you were going. I could feel it. I know. I think Jade was trying to be the better person. I just thought we could be girls on tour, but it's fine. Oh, Jade! I didn't even think of it.
It could have been a little mixed reunion. Yeah, it could have been. You're breaking our hearts, Jada. I just wanted to make a new friend. That's not happening. That is not happening. So, Maddie, you're going to go with your husband. What's his name? Oh, Maddie.
With my husband, Jack. Yeah, Jack. Okay, so Jack, if you're listening, you're going to Big Weekend with Maddie. Well played, Maddie. You've been very deceptive. I've been deceitful. You've been deceitful in a very wholesome area. And so now, actually, the other thing we didn't say is that if anyone did steal the tickets, they do have to go and feed the lions.
this morning. So that is grab yourself some lovely tasty steaks. That's a fair punishment. Off you go. And all being well, we'll see you at the big weekend. We'll see how you go.
Maddie and Jade, thank you so much for being on today. Enjoy the Safari Park. Enjoy the rest of your day. And Mina, amazing work this morning. Great hiding place. Really my favourite one. We should get some animal news from the Safari Park if we've got some at some point. Definitely. Definitely. We'll do the 10 minute takeover in a second and let's play Ed Sheeran's Sing and then we'll get your choices next on The Breakfast Show.
The showdown, day four is done. We'll do one more tomorrow. Really good from Mina today. Really good from Maddie. I thought she played a good game. A treacherous game, but a good game. And we go again with the final, final, final, final pair of tickets tomorrow on The Breakfast Show. Next up, let's get you up to date with all the latest things. And let's shine a light on our chaotic king,
Jeremy Vine from BBC Radio 2. Jeremy does loads of brilliantly wacky things on his show and I love him for it. I respect him greatly.
And yesterday, for some reason, he got a professional into the studio to demonstrate something with him. I'm on a piece of tarpaulin and I have a professional cuddler behind me. I saw that video as the first thing when I woke up today and it was quite soothing. It was also confusing, but...
But I liked it. I think you should always, you know, push yourself with these sorts of things. And I don't know why there was a tarpaulin there. I mean, it's probably worth not asking why there was a tarpaulin. But the floor was covered and Jeremy was being hugged from behind by a professional cuddler lady. Oh, blimey.
How does that feel? Well, it just feels like I'm being really nicely enclosed by it. You are really amazing. This is kind of crazy.
This is kind of crazy. Why is he in a rom-com? This is kind of crazy, but I just feel like we have a connection. The crinkling of the tarpaulin, such a strange atmosphere in a live radio studio. I just feel like we don't really even know each other and here we are lying in the same studio. I feel I'm going to have to play a record, but that is so nice. I don't know what's going on, but I love it. I really love it.
Next up, let's go to TikToker EllaIsAnoying, who's done a video of her doing a different kind of 5K run. There's a lot of people doing runs, park runs, marathons at the minute and half marathons, all the rest of it. Ella's got a great idea. Here she is to explain it. We are running 1K, stopping each kilometre at a different bar, having a drink and then running the next day after that. Very into it. This is a funned up run.
A few issues did arise. Hey guys, this is us. I want to say 300 metres in. Two stitches. Can't breathe. First kilometre down, first drink down. Yeah, not going that well. They're just sort of having Aperol spritzes every kilometre. Kilometre four.
Going well, we're holding pace really well. They're like on the scooters. 4Ks down, four drinks. Now that I'm 4Ks in, it really makes me think about the number four and One Direction's fourth album. Yeah, it's a tricky one. Maybe this is the next Breakfast Show versus New Music Show challenge. I'm well up for it. And finally, some new music from Lorde is coming. Man of the Year is a new song of hers. We know that the Lorde has risen.
And there's more new music on the way. That's going to sound amazing and epic and very lordy. And let's play What Was That? And once you've heard it, you're up to date with all the latest things. And now we quiz. Here comes Josh. And let's quiz. This week we're finding some singles. Some singles in the Liverpool area.
Morning Greg, morning.
Yeah, I mean, I've got my hair cut out today, 100%. I think you can do it. I'm feeling good. I'm feeling up for it. I'm feeling excited for the weekend. And you are a Sefton boy born and bred. Well, yeah, close by, close by, mostly always. So only a 20-minute walk from there. Okay, so tell us about Sefton Park. Tell us about that area. Why should we be excited about it? What's good around there?
Well, I think you've had a lot of recommendations from Lark Lane this week as well. So I think they're all good recommendations. But the Sefton Park area is one of the nicest areas of the city, I'd say, especially the park as well. Looking forward to it. People tell us how amazing it is and also how we've disrupted their running routes as well. Loads of lorries and loads of stuff and stages being put up and everything. Josh, tell me about you then. So what do you do?
some metallurgist in a steelworks. Are you? Yeah, so essentially I prepare metal samples and look at them under a microscope. Oh wow, what an interesting job! Yeah, I didn't expect to be doing it, but here I am. What, did someone trick you into it? No, it's just not what I expected to do when I was younger, like, but yeah, it's a good job. Yeah, really interesting. Yeah, it's a good job, I'm enjoying it. Well, we're going to get you on the quiz right now. You're going to Big Weekend, by the way, are you?
Yeah, Friday and Saturday. Great. Well, we'll see you down there at Sefton. And let's do yesterday's quiz. 90 seconds on the clock. 20 is the high score of the week so far. I believe in you, Josh. You're clearly a smart man. I think you're going to do really well. Here we go. It's 90 seconds on the clock. One.
And your time starts when you give me your first answer. Do I have some dingers? Yes, I do. Here we go with question number one. Where was Mina hiding yesterday as part of Radio 1's showdown for the tickets? The Wheel. The Wheel is correct. And off we go. A teaser for Wicked. The Good was released. Who plays Galinda in that film?
Is it Kieran Culkin? No, it's Ariana Grande. Oh, yes. Spurs beat which Manchester team 1-0 yesterday? They beat Man United. They did. Gemini season began. Name me another astrological sign, please. Pisces. Yes. What day was it yesterday? Wednesday. Yes. Who was on the quiz yesterday? Charlie. Yes. Poster for the new Jurassic Park film was released. Which of these is a real dinosaur? Calvin Harrisosaurus or Diplodocus?
Yes. I revealed that KSI will be appearing at which festival in Liverpool this weekend? Yes, alongside Tom Grennan. Kim Kardashian graduated law school. Name one of her other famous family members. Yes. What time was it this time yesterday?
It was 718. It was. Volcanoes. Correct. Cricket. Correct. Cricket.
Ooh. Yeah, two points for that. Timothy Chalamet was spotted watching the New York Knicks, but which sci-fi series does he appear as alongside some sandworms? Oh, I'm not sure. It was the movie series Dune. Yesterday was National Buy and Musical Instrument Day. Name me any musical instrument.
A euphonium. Yeah, wow. Two points for that. Out of nowhere, a euphonium. And yesterday was Novak Djokovic's birthday. But what sport does he play? Tennis. He does. And with that, you're out of time. Some good quiz in there. Big score, hopefully. Good score. It is. Do you know what? Josh, on any other week, that would have got you into the final, no question. You got 16 today.
Oh, well, I'll happily take that. I know a few of your listeners don't like that phrase, but I'll take that. Yeah, they don't. I think we should discuss this. And I'm pleased you brought that up, Josh, because there was a thing that happened ages ago where it was Danny, listener Danny, said she doesn't like it when people say, I'll take that when I give you your score. And then we decided to start docking a point for that. I fell out of love with that idea ages ago, so I don't care. I'm not going to do that, so we're going to...
In fact, I'm going to give you another point. There you go. How about that? Thanks for bringing it up. Thanks for braving that. And we're going to turn that 16 into a 17. So actually, you're the joint lowest score of the week. But that was with Laura for Monday. So 17 points, Josh, that's not a disgrace at all.
Yeah, I'm happy with that. Very happy. Thanks for being on. See you at Sefton over the weekend and have a good day today. Yeah, you too. Have a good weekend. We go again with the final of yesterday's quiz tomorrow. And are we going to do it in person? So we're going to have Charlotte and Callum in the studio with us here in Liverpool tomorrow morning at 7.15. Don't miss it. And now it's Thursday. Do you know what? I think for that amazing victory...
From Spurs last night, first trophy in 17 years, I think we start off with this. Tottenham won the away plea yesterday. Very strong start. Let's go to Rachel in the City. It's payday tomorrow, big weekend on Saturday. Are there a bike holiday on Monday? Charlie! I made an offer on a house yesterday and it got accepted. Wow!
On Thursdays we weigh. Tomorrow is a start. And we're going on holiday. Weigh! That was Olivia, Lola, Alex and the rest of the gang on half term and they are weighing. Weigh!
Sam! I'm finishing work and going fishing today. Woo-hey! Woo-hey! Lovely. Becky's in York. My sister's getting married tomorrow and Spurs won the Europa League. Woo-hey! Good weighing. Very good. I'm excited because tomorrow's my holiday weekend. I haven't got nothing to do. Woo-hey! Woo-hey!
Good one, Kai. Amy. Hey, Greg. I have tomorrow off work, so today is my Friday. Wahey! Ruben's last day in school before nine days off. Wahey! Very good. Some amazing ways today. We've got loads more as well.
Confidence man on that main stage tomorrow at Radio 1's big weekend. We'll be doing live do-do-dos. It's going to be so good. Lynn! My name's Lynn and I'm going to Japan on Monday. Yay! Someone's doing well. George! I've got the dentist on Tuesday, meaning I've got a four-day weekend. We're here! Yay! Taking time off to go to the dentist? Yeah. All right.
Must be a big one. I get married in three days. Way! Kate and Ipswich have an amazing time. We've got... I'm going to Bournemouth this weekend for my 10th birthday. Thursday! Jack, very, very good. Also, he's 10, which means he gets a very special double digits!
Shout out because he's reached double digits, so that's good. Jay. Going to Blackpool, getting married, bank holiday weekend. Sounds like he hasn't got it planned. Married in Blackpool? Going to go to Blackpool, might get married. Rory. I'm taking the Mrs. Kids and me mum to Disneyland Paris tomorrow. Rory!
The kids have got an inset day and we're on our way to Thorpe Park. So busy! Today I get to find out my year six leavers play.
Myself, my wife Samantha and our son Evan are going to Ready One's big weekend and then we're going to watch the Liverpool Parade, even though we're not really Liverpool fans. So we're here! Hooray! Great, a few more. This morning, my husband has agreed to go on a long-haul flight for the first time. So we're off to Mexico in November. Hooray!
I love the level of detail in all of these. It's like real insight into lives. My new car arrives two weeks yesterday. Woo-hoo! Also so precise from Adam. It arrives two weeks yesterday. Just say two weeks, man. At a Rubik's Cube competition at the weekend in the Mega Minx, a 12-sided one, my son won a world record. An actual world record. Woo-hoo! Yay!
Such a great array of mad voice notes today for Thursday. And Callum, we should do a doo-doo, shall we? Yeah. Let's start off. I know we're making you do a lot. We're making you do ways. We need to do doo-doos now. So I'll just start it off slowly. OK. Do-do-do-do-do. Do-do-do-do-do-do-do. Do-do-do-do-do-do-do. Do-do-do-do-do-do-do. Do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do. Do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do.
Do you reckon we can get away with doing that on tomorrow night? Yeah. Let's storm the stage. Why don't you storm the stage and do it? They wouldn't mind. They're fun, aren't they? Confidence man. Thank you for everyone and a big way to you. Woo!
Let's now go back to the Safari Park because we had a very special edition of Animal News. Radio 1 Breakfast Show live from Liverpool. This is Greg James. Callum Leslie's here. Hello. Mina from the Tracys is here. Hello. And we've got Louise who's going to do some Animal News. Louise, good morning. Morning. Thank you so much for joining me. I love Animal News so much. I love animals so much. I'm so jealous of your job. Tell us your job title, please.
Senior Keeper of Ungerlitz. Senior Keeper of Ungerlitz. Can you tell everyone what Ungerlitz is, please? It is hoofstock. Hoofstock. Hoofstock. It's just hoofstock. OK, so how's the hoofstock this morning?
Yes, we're all very good this morning. Everybody's been fed and they're all out for the day. You said we, do you include yourself in hoof stock? Yep, I am one of the animals here, yes. She's hooved. Okay, so Louise, welcome to The Breakfast Show, welcome to Animal News and we're live from Loseley Safari Park. How long have you worked there for? Just over four years now. Okay, and do you have a favourite? Yes, one of the rhinos, one of the old girls, Winnie. Winnie, how old is Winnie?
When he is about 36 years old. 36?! Yep, she's an old girl. Yeah, she's going well. How old do they normally live for? Um, roughly about 40 is a good... Yeah, about 40, 45 is a really good age. Oh. So she's getting on. Don't be walking around saying life begins at 40 because it's not for rhinos. Nope. Let's keep it light though, shall we? Let's keep it positive. And give us some wonderful animal news, please. Louise, what have you got for us?
Our exciting news this morning is that our male rhino, Sharka, has got a new boot. Really? Okay. Tell us about the boot. What do you mean? So Sharka's been made a fancy new boot for his foot. Last year he had his little sore on the base of his foot. So he's got a fancy new foot with some shiny buckles and straps and it's just to protect it when he goes outside. Were you tempted to put a wheelie on him?
A healy? Yeah, I'm not sure that would go down quite well, but yeah, we could maybe give that a go. Yeah, not sure if you could. You know, like when, sadly, when dogs have to have wheels and things, could you do the same for rhinos? I'm not sure. I'm not sure with that one. We'll send our best to Sharka. Is he doing well? Is he adjusting to it? Yeah, we're still training him just now to get it on, but yeah, he's doing really well. He wants to put it on himself.
Not quite, no. He'll come over and we'll get him to lift his foot and we'll put the boot on for him. Bless him. Animals are so smart. They adapt so easily, don't they? Yeah. They just sort of know. You must have such an amazing bond with them because they sort of know sort of what you're doing, but also like what you're up to, but this is sort of helping. So you must have got such a great connection with them. Yeah, it's a lot of trust that we've got both ways. Yeah, they're very good. Well, send our best to Sharka. How old's he?
32. Oh, God. Not long left. Still a while. Still a while. What else have we got? Other animal news, please, Louise. Other animal news is that we have just let our rhinos out for the day and they're running around the paddock right now. Give us a little insight into what you feed them all day, every day. What's on the menu for a rhino?
Just hay. That's all they eat. Just hay. Just hay? Wow. Are you surprised about that? Yep, just hay and some grazing. I thought they'd eat more things. Hmm. Yep. So they eat roughly about approximately one bale of hay a day. Whoa! Oh, wow. Yeah. That's a lot of hay. Yep. I'm sure that I've fed a rhino a banana before. Ooh, it's not very good bananas. No, Greg. No. Oh.
Oh, right. Well, no, I didn't just... I wasn't going rogue, I was told. Maybe as a treat. Maybe as a treat. Yeah, a little treat. What about watermelon? I've seen a rhino crush a watermelon before. I think that was maybe a hippo, Greg. I think you're probably right. LAUGHTER
You and I are probably doing the jobs we're supposed to be doing, aren't we? Yeah. Louise, thanks so much for your time today. And I hope you enjoy the rest of your day at Losey Safari Park. And I've been fascinated to find out that there's a nursery on site. I think that's amazing. The kids must come down. Do they get special access and stuff? Yeah, I think so. I think every now and then they come round and see our animals. Thanks for being on Animal News. Louise, have a great day. And thank you, Mina. I've got to say, Callum. Yeah.
It was a rhino. You still think you're right on this, don't you? It was a rhino. Yeah. I know when I've met a rhino and when I've met a hippo. Yeah. And I've... Yeah. I searched it on my phone. There's a YouTube video of a rhino squishing and eating a watermelon, so you were correct. There's also a video on my phone of me feeding a rhino a banana when I stayed at the rhino lodge for my honeymoon...
At Port Lim for one night only. It would be unexpected if there was a hippo at the Rhino Lodge. Yeah, yeah. Unexpected hippo at the Rhino Lodge. I, yeah, I had a one-day honeymoon. I do remember my honeymoon and I remember that Aled only gave me one day off for it. So that's good, isn't it? What else happened today? Kevin. Kevin.
Kevin Douala. And we welcome a very special guest. Kevin Douala, welcome to the Radio and Breakfast Show. Morning, Greg. Morning, Greg. Great to see you, but I've got to start off. I do have a bone to pick with you. Please. We welcomed you with open arms to BBC Radio Merseyside. I get a message from my friend saying, you know, Greg's in Liverpool. I said, what? And he hasn't invited me. So that's why I'm here. You're here? Wait.
I've been in Merseyside every day, but unfortunately you do the breakfast show, so I've been going in with Jack's show in the evening, and you're not there in the evening. But that's the spiritual home of you and all the radio stuff in the city. And we've been so welcomed by everyone at Merseyside. And can I just say a huge congratulations to you on best season.
speech breakfast show at the Arias gold award what you mean you mean this award you brought it yes of course you gotta bring it it goes everywhere with me Greg it's sturdy that drop it on the desk will you listen
That's proper. It's proper. That is proper. That is richly... Thank you, mate. I appreciate that. Thank you. It was a big, big night and such a competitive category. And for you to get that is a real... That's a real amazing achievement. Well, we've got to do a big shout out to all of the team and our BBC Radio Merseyside listeners as well. It's their award, really. So we're grateful. It's such a huge part of the city. And how are your listeners feeling about Radio 1's Big Weekend descending on the city? Yes. Very, very excited. Yes.
There's a massive, massive buzz. It's a huge weekend anyway in Liverpool in general with the Queen and the Cunard coming here. Liverpool lifting the trophy as well, the big parade. That little smile on your face. He told you once. You're a huge Liverpool fan. Are you part of it on Monday? What are you doing? I'm just going to be watching it. I'm going with my son Joe. He's coming up from London, so we're just going to be there as fans and just watching the team go by. But everybody in Liverpool, we're really, really happy with Big Radio on weekend. Can't wait for it. They reckon about a million people this weekend.
on Monday for the parade? And then some, I think. Mad. Yeah, it's going to be the weekend in Liverpool this weekend. It's going to be bedlam. Nicely timed because of the last match at Goodison on Sunday, big weekend in the middle of it, and then the parade on Monday. This is a pretty happy week or so for everyone, isn't it, really? And are you happy to be in Liverpool? Have you been treating you right? I'm...
having such a great time I think when I was on your show a few months ago I said that we always have this thing where we just throw everything at it we move our lives up here for however long and
And I tend to always fall in love with the place we do Big Weekend. And no disrespect to Luton and Dundee the last few years. And I loved spending time there, really did. But I've had such a great time so far. Everyone's been so welcoming, so funny, so up for it. Just asking a million questions about stuff, begging me for tickets. That's even the general thing. All the things. But it's been really great. Some great recommendations for some bars and some restaurants and stuff. I went for this really nice run last night before we went and watched the Europa Final.
along the docks, along the front here. Yeah, yeah, yeah. As the sun was going down. Stunning. You could be anywhere. What a city. Yeah, you could be anywhere in the world. I love Otterspool as well, just by where I live. Once the sun's setting there, it's just absolutely phenomenal. God, I'll ask you though, how's your scouse? It's boss. It's boss.
It's Lascares. Yeah, all right. All right, lad. Producer Tom was sitting. We were at, what was it called? Beer Keller. Beer Keller. So Tom had booked a little table for the football last night to make sure because he's a Man U fan. Oh, sorry, Tom. And he was there first because he was properly into it. And we were all a little bit, we were straggling a little bit late. And he texted the group just saying, I'm getting pressured here. It's just me on the table and everyone's being, everyone's like taking the mickey out of me because I'm a southerner. And they were like,
What did they say when they came up to you and went, where are your friends, la? And Tom was like, they'll be here in a minute. Words don't look like they're here, boys. Yeah, so he managed to stave off some quite angry Man United fans. Well done, Tom. Well done. So I need a recommendation for where you think Mina could be hiding tomorrow. So we've got one more location. I need an iconic...
Liverpool location. Where hasn't she been yet? She's done Cavern Club, she's done The Wheel, she's done Anfield, she's done the Safari Park today. Where next? Where's your money? I think, can I say it? Yeah, I think Aintree Racecourse. It was suggested this week. Someone said, someone actually went to Aintree to check. Yeah. So maybe a good shout. Yeah. That's a good shout.
That's my shout. Kev, nice to chat to you. And BBC Radio Merseyside all over the festival this weekend. So you're doing shows six o'clock on Saturday, seven o'clock on Sunday night. Yeah. Amazing. So listen to BBC Radio Merseyside for all the latest local information about the big weekend. Let's play one more song because we've got to get out of here, Kev. And nice to see you. We'll see you soon. Yeah. Cheers, Greg. That's the end of the podcast. Any other thoughts, questions, comments, complaints? Stopped raining. It has stopped raining. So that's good. That is good. Yeah.
Should we go for breakfast? Yeah. All right. See you tomorrow.
