The Ukrainian language has become a symbol of the Ukrainian people's fight for freedom and independence. It represents national identity and resistance against Russian aggression, especially since the war is often framed by Russia as a defense of Russian-speaking people, despite the fact that Russian-speaking Ukrainians are also being attacked.
On the morning of the invasion, President Zelensky had to quickly make critical decisions to respond to the full-scale invasion. He focused on evacuating people, delivering food to blocked cities, and distributing weapons to civilians to defend the capital. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining digital communication to keep the population informed and united.
Negotiating a ceasefire with Russia is extremely difficult due to the lack of trust and Russia's history of violating agreements. Previous ceasefire attempts, such as the Minsk agreements, failed because Russia continued to support separatists and carry out attacks. Security guarantees for Ukraine are essential to ensure that a ceasefire is not just a temporary pause but a step toward long-term peace.
NATO is seen as a critical security guarantee for Ukraine. Partial NATO membership for Ukraine, even if it excludes occupied territories, could provide a strong deterrent against future Russian aggression. However, Ukraine's full integration into NATO is complicated by ongoing conflicts in regions like Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia, Kherson, and Crimea.
President Zelensky believes that peace negotiations with Putin must be conducted from a position of strength, with strong security guarantees for Ukraine. He expresses hope that Trump can exert pressure on Putin to end the war but emphasizes that Putin is unlikely to willingly stop the conflict without external pressure.
The Budapest Memorandum, signed in 1994, provided security assurances to Ukraine in exchange for giving up its nuclear weapons. However, when Russia violated Ukraine's territorial integrity by annexing Crimea and supporting separatists in Donbas, the signatories, including the U.S., failed to act, undermining the memorandum's credibility.
Martial law in Ukraine has led to restrictions on certain freedoms and rights, as the country focuses on defending itself against Russian aggression. While these restrictions are necessary for national security, they have also created challenges for democracy and everyday life, including the postponement of elections.
President Zelensky acknowledges that corruption remains a challenge in Ukraine but highlights significant progress in combating it. He points to the imprisonment of influential oligarchs like Ihor Kolomoisky and the establishment of independent anti-corruption bodies as evidence of Ukraine's commitment to transparency and reform.
President Zelensky respects Elon Musk as a self-made innovator and leader. He is particularly grateful for Musk's provision of Starlink, which has been crucial in maintaining internet connectivity in Ukraine during the war, both on the front lines and in civilian areas like schools and kindergartens.
President Zelensky envisions a future Ukraine that is economically prosperous, digitally advanced, and culturally aligned with Europe. He emphasizes the importance of digital transformation, tax reform, and foreign investment in sectors like green energy, oil, and gas to rebuild the country and attract Ukrainians back home after the war.
